Cases of equine neglect often occur simply from owners lack of knowledge, not from intentional mistreatment. CHR strives to eliminate this type of equine abuse and neglect through educational programs and events. By educating the general public on proper horse care and financial commitments, CHR hopes to reduce the number of starvation cases seen each year. To help meet this goal, CHR is proud to present a new sponsorship program geared toward schools and students of all ages. CHR has partnered with Cindy Lee of the Wags and Menace Foundation to bring equine learning directly into the classroom! Students are immersed into the basics of proper horse care: grooming, vet needs, and (of course) how they can support the horses. A working knowledge of horse basics is a great tool to help decrease the number of neglected horses! Why Sp onsor a Hor se? 2 From the Executive Director BOARD OF DIRECTORS: Deanna Lyn Jim Rea Erica Churgin Steve Gardner Chris Pacocha Stacy Bluhm Tonya Gray STAFF: Judy B. Smetana Jenny Logan Carol Brice Rachel Prentice Debra Thomas Jose Catano CONTACT: N. 65th St. Longmont, CO CHRonicle Editor: Carol Brice CHRonicle Graphic Design: Roxanne Capaul ON THE COVER: COWBOY-10 year old Quarter Horse. Available for adoption! (Companion) Greetings! Thank you, thank you, thank you and thank you again for all your support in 2011! Thanks to all of our supporters, Colorado Horse Rescue ended the year with a record number of donations. We exceeded 2010 by 20%. What a stellar performance in this economy! We couldn t do it without you and I hope you realize how much your support is appreciated by me, the staff, the volunteers, and by our horses! If you aren t sure, give me a call (ext. 2201) and I ll tell you personally. What is planned for 2012? Lots! We have several clinics planned through March and are already working on April and May. Check out our website for listings. Thanks to a very generous donation we now have the money to build our much awaited hay barn. We have a few more hoops to jump through with Boulder County, but once that is done we should start building in the Spring/Summer. We are also planning to offer a program called Healing with Horses which will work to help individuals become empowered, build core confidence, and set boundaries. We are very excited that some of our companion horses will have a true purpose. Our next open house is scheduled for Saturday, April 7th so plan on coming out and visiting our horses adopters and sponsors welcome. We are planning a fun event for June 2nd at the Haystack Golf Course as well. Stay tuned to our website for more information. Our annual Summer Open House is set for June 23rd. Spring Fling Appeal! In order to be pro-active this year, we decided to focus on fundraising early in the year so we don t experience the summer dry spell we had in With this Spring Fling campaign, I am appealing to our donors to send in a donation of either $35 or $70 to cover two months of operating costs. CHR needs around $35,000 a month for operating expenses and if we get 2,000 people to donate $35 we ll have two months paid! If we get 1,000 donors to donate $70 we ll have two months paid. Either way our horses win! Survey results! Thanks to all who sent in a survey. What we learned: The majority said they learned about CHR from a friend or family member We can count on their support of CHR in the future Most important issue = Rescue and Horse Care The majority income range was less than $50,000 I hope this finds you all doing well. I look forward to your continued commitment of the Colorado Horse Rescue mission. Your support is always greatly appreciated. Fondly with the horses, Judy Smetana, Ph.D. PAGE 2 A Message from our Ambassador... Winter greetings everyone! As you can see, some of us are up to our armpits in snow out here. We just love winter time at the rescue! Our volunteers take such good care of everybody and I want to thank you all for coming out here each week. I notice that some of our horses get blankets (I don t need one), some of them get lunch (I don t get one), and some of them get extra hay when it s cold (I don t get any extra food...what s up with that?) Anyway, thanks again for braving the cold weather and snowy roads to come and help. And... awesome job by all of you who worked the Stock Show booth. I hear it was a record year for CHR! Warm hugs, Boomer CHRONICLE

3 C H R T R A I N I N G S U C C E S S Training Program Helps CHR Adopt Out 30 Horses by Carol E. Brice Programs Coordinator CHR is proud to announce that we reached our goal of adopting out 30 horses in A big reason we were able to reach this important goal was due to our training program. We currently have two accomplished trainers working with 12 horses. All of our trainers are required to go through an intensive evaluation process that consists of an interview with several members of the staff, a written test and a riding test. The horses that come through our doors have usually had difficult backgrounds and their levels of training can vary greatly: from very experienced under saddle, to never started, to completely feral. Once the horse settles in and completes its physical rehabilitation our trainers do a comprehensive evaluation. The focus of our training program is to build a solid foundation from the ground up and to determine what each horse might naturally be suited for. Many horse owners are happy to have a horse that will just mosey down the trail while others are looking for a horse to compete in the show arena. Cate Lamm and Sarah Morgan spend many hours out here each week. They develop an individualized training regimen for each horse depending on its specific needs. Whether it s a horse that has never been around humans or a horse that needs a little tune-up, our trainers are committed to bringing out the best in each one. By collaborating with our trainers we can find a forever home where each horse can be happy, healthy and loved. Colorado Horse Rescue thanks Cindy A. Lee of the Wags n Menace Foundation (wagsandmenace.org) for starting an incredible Medical Fund with a very generous donation of $3,000! Apollo and Hope have already benefited, as will others to come. 6 S U C C E S S S T O R Y HORSE RESCUE Colorado Horse Rescue (CHR) is a 501 (C) (3) non-profit organization dedicated to providing emergency relief, shelter, care, rehabilitation and adoption services for abused, neglected. abandoned and unwanted horses. CHR provides community resources through equine education, counseling, information and referral services. CHR is funded through individual donations, grants, bequests and corporate sponsorships. By Debra Thomas, Barn Manager and Adoption Coordinator and Brooke Danner, Bentley s New Owner Bentley came to the rescue known as Bam Bam. He arrived with 6 other horses that had no previous handling. They were friendly but not even halter broke. Because they all had such sweet personalities, they came along very quickly. Bentley is very smart and willing to connect. He is now living with his first human family and is deeply loved and well cared for. Below is his picture with his young owner Brooke. We love finding these worthy horses such wonderful forever homes. Thanks to the Danner family, Bentley is learning multiple riding disciplines and will have a long and happy life! I adopted Bentley, aka Bam Bam, almost a year ago, yet it feels like decades. He has become the jewel in my life, with his emotional and flashy character. Because I home-school, I am able to give Bentley my undivided attention, seeing him almost every day. When I first got him he was a complete green bean, not even knowing how to pick up his hooves (that was an event). He has proven to be a very willing partner, and with determination we were able to overcome some hurdles. My goal is to start him in dressage, but we ve still got a long way to go with two lessons a week, and two natural horsemanship clinics a month. Right now he lives in a stall with a run and is turned out every day to play and frolic with dozens of his companions at Heart and Soul. I am very blessed to have Bentley as a part of my family. Mane Event Sponsorships Needed! This year we are advertising for Mane Event corporate or business sponsorships to help fund our annual fundraiser! 7 Colorado HAY CRISIS By Jenny Logan, Equine Facilities Director We are receiving more and more calls from desperate folks worried about being able to feed their horses this winter due to the high price of hay. Many of these horse owners are searching for rescues to take their animals and while we assist as many people as possible, the sad fact is that many horses will suffer this year. So how did this hay crisis happen? Colorado hay producers experienced less than suitable growing conditions in 2011 which lead to lower than normal hay production in many parts of the state. Combine this along with the devastating drought conditions in Texas and New Mexico, and it is easy to see how horse owners across the West have been affected by sky rocketing hay prices and reduced availability of good quality forage for their animals. Many hay growers in Colorado have shipped substantial quantities of their harvest to drought stricken areas outside of the state which has left many local horse owners without access to affordable hay. Fortunately for our horses, we were able to stock up on hay near the end of the growing season when prices were relatively stable. Our hay suppliers were generous enough to make sure that we were able to get the hay we needed before prices went up. We d like to thank our generous donors for your financial contributions that we put towards hay last year--it was a real help. Hay is a major expenditure for the rescue each year and we are grateful for your continued support. SPONSOR ME! FRED I m a super mellow guy who came to CHR the victim of divorce. My former owner loved me very much, but unfortunately he was losing his property and couldn t keep me any longer. I was trained to ride and drive, and I did so for years. I love to just hang out and connect with people. Grooming is one of my favorite things! Due to my older age, my teeth aren t so good anymore. I get to eat a special diet of senior grain, soaked beet pulp, and hay pellets. It looks like soup, but I think it s delicious. I m a great kids horse, and I would love to meet some new sponsors! MOON I m a very special guy. I bond strongly with other horses, and I m an absolute love with people of all ages. I do best in a consistent environment; otherwise I can be stressed and worried. I have an incredibly sweet, mellow personality, and I love to be loved. I m always up for a good grooming or hand-walking (my back is a little weak these days, which is why I m no longer a riding horse). I m a fantastic companion, and right now I m just waiting for the right person to come along and give me a wonderful forever home! DIAMOND Don t you just love all my spots? I m a very cute leopard-bay Appaloosa who is a little shy but very sweet. The majority of the time I am quiet and willing, but sometimes when I m taken out of my environment I can become very nervous and fearful. I respond well to calm and quiet groundwork and I enjoy attention from humans including grooming and just hanging out. I am fairly submissive in the mare s herd at CHR, but still have a couple close friends that I spend all of my time with. The nice folks here at CHR did try working with me under saddle, but I communicated pretty clearly that the whole experience is just too much for me. I can t tell them if it s just from harsh handling in my past or some other reason, but either way we ve all decided that the best thing is for me to retire and live out a contented life as a pasture pal. If you have experience helping horses like me to become more confident and if you are looking for a loving, colorful companion to brighten your days, we may be a good match. Fred Moon Please Adopt By Jenny Logan, Equine Facilities Director Diamond CHR has seen an increase this year in the number of inquiries from horse owners looking to give up their equine friends. Most folks looking to re-home their horses are experiencing serious financial difficulties that can be attributed to the fall-out from our slow economy (such as lack of employment and home foreclosure). Also on the rise are horses left behind when their elderly owners pass away, horses with owners in poor health, and horses with owners who have become full time caretakers for ill family members. While it is difficult to hear these stories, they are the reason we are here--to help as many horse owners as possible. A large number of these horses come from loving homes, are in good condition and are highly adoptable. We can only take in as many horses as we can properly care for and re-home for so please consider adopting a CHR horse. This kind act will ensure that we can continue our mission of placing horses into new forever homes. CHRONICLE PAGE 7

8 10386 North 65th Street Longmont, CO Healing with Horses by Debra Thomas Barn Manager and Adoption Coordinator CHR is extremely proud to be launching a new program this spring! This is an amazing program being offered to woman of domestic violence. CHR is teaming up with the L.E.V.I. program out of Longmont to offer woman continued support and healing from past traumas. This is state of the art training. It is an 8 hour program that will be covering the ABC s of empowerment. A stands for Awareness B stands for Boundaries C stands for Core Confidence Each segment goes through a journey of learning skills and gaining tools to live life with more confidence. This is an empowerment program that will change many lives. It is a healing process for both women and horses. Many of our rescue horses have also experienced abuse, abandonment and neglect. These powerful creatures are very willing to participate in this process and have so much to offer. The horses are the teachers of this program and they are the true healers. This is just the beginning. We will be offering other programs to teens as well as men s and women s groups. Keep an eye out for times and dates on our website, chr.org.
