3 Message from the President The arena at Jim and Margy Hamilton s was put up over the 4th of July weekend. My heartfelt thanks go to Kathi Ferguson, Kelli Lyon, Amy Ferguson, Nancy Davis, Jim and Linda Mulkey for all their hard work during the hot weekend, putting up the arena. Also, thanks go to Ricky and Mike Bailey and Claudia McIntosh for their work in mapping and staking out the arena. One other thing - many compliments have been received on the new format of the newsletter. Keep up the good work, Linda! Margy Definitions... 4 Mid-Summer Horse Show July 9, 2005 The Open Horse Show at Jim and Margy Hamilton s new arena was fun for all who attended. Jill Andrews was the judge and Erin Andrews was the ring steward. Mark King was the announcer. He was assisted by Nancy Cuccato. Kathy Peterson and Luanne King did registrations. Marie McIntyre sold raffle tickets for the 50/50 raffle (which was won by Margy Hamilton). Kelli Lyon and her sons Jared and Jake handed out the ribbons and 1st place awards. Kathi Ferguson, Marie McIntyre, and Ricky Bailey filled in where necessary. The obstacles for the driving classes were set up by Margy Hamilton, Kelli Lyon and Linda Mulkey. 6 First human case of West Nile in 2005 diagnosed in northern Nevada KRNV-TV The Nevada State Health Division announced that the first human case of West Nile has been diagnosed in Lyon County. Health officials say the victim, identified only as a male under the age of 50, has the more severe form of the disease, West Nile encephalitis or meningitis. Officials say only one person out of every 150 who contract the disease will develop the more severe form. Symptoms of the more severe form include severe headaches, high fever, neck stiffness, stupor, disorientation, coma, tremors, convulsions, muscle weakness and paralysis. Infected mosquitoes have been found in Washoe County as well. The Washoe District Health Department plans to spray the Spanish Springs area after finding mosquitoes infected with the virus in a trap at the Lazy Five Ranch off Pyramid Highway. Cases of the disease have also appeared in a small bird in Elko County and a horse in Lyon County. Agriculture Department staff veterinarian Dan Crowell of Elko found the body of a finch in Spring Creek. It was confirmed to have died of the disease. And a quarter horse in Silver Springs, east of Carson City, also was infected. Officials say it's not time for panic, but it is time for caution. They say long pants, long sleeves and insect repellant are good ideas along with screens that will keep mosquitoes out. Until last year, Nevada was among the last few states to be hit by the virus since it was first discovered in New York in 1999 and began spreading across the nation. Nevada had 44 confirmed cases last year, four in Washoe County, one in Lyon County, 14 in Churchill County, one in Carson City, one in Douglas County and 23 in Clark County. No deaths were reported. A buffalo who has been wandering around Fort Churchill Park for the past year, caused a lot of excitement. Three riders were bucked off when their horses spied the buffalo. Luckily, no one was injured. Park personnel have assured us it will be permanently removed by the 9th of August. The usual crew worked at this event as at the others: Margy Hamilton, Marie McIntyre, Kathi Ferguson, Jill Andrews, and Linda Mulkey. Luanne King did the registrations. ******** Congratulations to Marie McIntyre who has a new horse. Rocket is nothing like her name she is a very easy going palomino. Marie has stated that her trot is so smooth, that these days she d rather trot than walk! Page 6 HD Hoofprints

7 Horse Show Harold Roy Miller There was a gaited horse show at Carson s Fuji Park. I brought my Tiger Horse down, just for a lark. I wasn't sure he was the one that I should bring because he had never set foot into a show ring. But winning first place rolled off the tongue real nice, and I figured it would increase the horse s sale price. I had contrived a plan that I wanted to succeed in helping me to promote the Tiger Horse breed. I found a jumping class I could enter him in, which I was sure he was destined to win; not because at jumping we were both highly skilled, but it was the only class left that wasn't filled. Nevada Panels & Gates, Inc Reno Hwy Fallon, Nevada In fact, I was the only one entered in this class at all, and I knew we'd both come out standing tall. Winning a blue ribbon would sure make me proud, and we might get a standing ovation from the crowd. Jumping those poles was just a minor thing, I thought as I rode slowly into the show ring. Even if the horse knocked over every blessed one, we d still get a blue ribbon for it when we were done. I spurred my horse in the flanks as we bore down toward those round poles stacked a foot above the ground. I expected him to sail gracefully right over the top but I became the soarer when he decided to stop! I brushed myself off and we finished the course and I went to collect my ribbon for my new show horse. The judge laughed heartily as he shook his head, and he handed me a ribbon that was crimson red. I stood there, embarrassed, as the crowd started to roar. The ring steward said she had never witnessed this before. I could feel the blush spreading all over my face. I was the only one in the class, but I still came in second place! Reminder: High Desert Horsemen is signed up at Office Depot in their Advantage program.
