"When I heard about the Parelli Celebration Savvy Spotlight, I could not wait to sign up! I knew I wanted to bring Ice to the Franklin, Tennessee Celebration. I was so excited when I was chosen! We got to Franklin, and got Ice settled in his stall. He ate and drank, and seemed happy. The arena was not open until later, and we were pretty tired from our long drive, so we did not get to practice. The next day was The Celebration! We waited for our turn, and then lined up in the alley to go into the building. Ice took one look at the crowd, and all the stuff inside the building, and lay down to roll. At that moment, I relaxed. 4 QUESTION I have been re-watching the Liberty and Horse Behavior series. At one point, at the end of a classroom session when Linda is sending the participants out to different workshops, she talks about specific techniques that can make a horse comfortable with a bit in as little as one session. (Especially horses that chomp on the bit.) What are the techniques? Is it combing the reins? The words are really meaningful and the melody's great. It's called: Ready for a Change. if you want this wonderful theme song in your personal collection go to and As you know, I was trying to just leave the bridle on Troop so he could just get use to it. However, Trooper, aka Houdini left it on the first day, got it off in about 3 hours the next day, 1 hour the third day, and by the 4th day go it off in about 15 minutes. Nothing broken anywhere, just off. Could be his friend Raider helped him, but no matter, that strategy won't work. He is slowly getting better, but her comments on the video made me wonder if there was something else I could do. He is very emotional about the bit when I put any pressure on it. I have gone back to only combing the reins and stopping when he is relaxed. It just doesn't feel like I'm making much progress. Pat ANSWER 1. It's usually pent-up playful or nervous, anxious energy. It's hard to realize how much is going on in their mind or emotions until they have something in their mouth, much like giving a quiet person chewing gum or a pen. All of a sudden you notice that they are chewing like a maniac or playing incessantly with the pen! So this should alert you to the fact that the horse is not calm. Now It's either fear or defiance / dominance. This is where knowing the Horsenality will help you the Left-Brain horse will fuss with the bit because he's having aggravated thoughts (Left-Brain Introvert) or he needs to play and engage his mind (Left-Brain Extrovert). The Right-Brain horse will fuss with the bit because he is nervous and unsettled. So it's not about the bit! It's about what's going on inside the horse. The technique I was alluding to in the Liberty & Horse Behavior course is simply a matter of causing the undesirable thing to be difficult: For example, when you are standing with the horse and he's chomping on the bit, you jiggle the bit until he goes quiet. Then you stop. When he starts, you start and when he stops, you stop. This is not a matter of making him uncomfortable, it is capturing his attention and focusing his mind. So when that happens, his mouth goes quiet. Usually they'll end up letting out a big sigh and relaxing and some horses will take longer than others. It tends to work more quickly with Right-Brain horses but 4 of 10 2/12/09 5:22 PM

Left-Brain horses are inclined to keep doing it almost every time because their mind is always working! It sounds like your Houdini is one of them. So the real solution is to play with him more, because when you fulfill him mentally, emotionally and phsyically he will become emotionally calm and more willing rather than defiant. The bit fussing will be good feedback for you! You'll know when he's feeling centered and when he's pent up. PS Please note that some horses are also physically uncomfortable with the bit, especially Left-Brain horses who tend to need a bit with tongue release... and this is amplified when riding with contact. Here's some amazing news, however: Because Pat, Linda and the HSUS have stood up to highlight the plight of these horses, they have already inspired action by others! "I am on the Board of Directors of the Indiana Horse Council Foundation. About 3 weeks before the Franklin Celebration, I was telling Dave Howell, President of Indiana Horse Council, what Parelli was doing with HSUS in spotlighting a rescue horse at each venue. And I asked why couldn't we do something similar at the Indiana Horse Fair in April. So Dave got on the phone with others and they started working the phones and the response has been overwhelming. Thoroughbred, Standardbred, Saddlebred and various other rescues are going to be spotlighting rescue horses and some clinicians at our Horse Fair are going to work with them. It gets better - our Horse Council president then contacted several other state Horse Councils and they are going to do the same thing at their horse fairs. So far I believe Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota are on board but I will verify. The rescues here in Indiana jumped on this opportunity right away. 7 Atwood Ranch Horses Now Available on Both Coasts: Ocala, Florida and California A truly WINTER workshop in the UK This pass Thursday saw the UK with a few inches of snow. A small group of us were still able to attend our winter workshop and we spent the day chatting about everything but the weather, looking at 'Building Confidence for us & our horses.' Thank you to those smiling faces who managed to get through safely to spend the day with us. Atwood Ranch is pleased to announce that Atwood bred horses of varying ages, all with natural foundations, are now available in five different locations. At the Parelli Center in Florida, a lovely group of three-year-olds are continuing their education with the participants of the Parelli Apprenticeship Program. These young horses began in the Pre-School Program in CA, went on to the University Colt Start class in CO, then progressed into the Apprenticeship Program in FL. Contact Atwood Ranch for details on the horses and to make an appointment to see them in Florida. A select group of two-year-olds are being started under saddle by Parelli Professionals with a special interest in colt starting and foundations.
