(AABA) as we celebrate our associations 10th anniversary on May 19, AABA was formed in 2006 by seven like-minded individuals wanting an association that was: focused on members needs a place where breeders of any herd size are welcome and can share ideas and give assistance in the spirit of cooperation made up of members helping each other and working towards the same goals affordable, friendly and inclusive. Though a lot has changed in the Australian Alpaca Industry over the past 10 years, AABA s core values remain unchanged and AABA continues to be a not for profit association, volunteer based, and run by the members for the members. AABA chose to inaugurate our association on May 19, 2006 as this was the 101st anniversary of Charles Ledger s death. Charles Ledger was the first person to import alpacas into Australia in 1859 and was a trailblazer and a pioneer of the Australian Alpaca Industry. Charles Ledger represents a forward thinking, flexible and proactive industry which AABA fosters in all our dealings. the australasian alpaca register (aar) The AAR is an innovative database and alpaca register which commenced mid The AAR is a foundation register and any alpaca is eligible to be registered, including alpacas of unknown parentage. AAR Benefits: Record genetically-based coat patterns like Appaloosa, True Black, Bay and Tuxedo. WORLD FIRST! Record the colours of eyes, eyelashes, toenails, nose and footpads. WORLD FIRST! No special requirements for stud males Individual logins for security (for all members, voting and associate alike) Enter data online yourself, or ask the AAR Registrar to do it, it s your choice. New members can register or transfer alpacas on the AAR for only $5 per animal during the first 12 months of membership. Existing members only pay $5 each for wethers and $10 each for females and entire males for registrations or transfers. AABA also offers a bulk discount when registering or transferring 10 or more animals in the one transaction, only $5 per animal! AABA s Vision We at AABA have a vision that says that as long as AABA remains level-headed, committed to measurable results, focussed on the needs of members, and basically being receptive, AABA will succeed, to firstly a viable, and then a thriving industry. AABA s Objectives The objectives of AABA are to: Promote and advance the breeding, husbandry and fleece potential of alpacas. Provide assistance to members owning and breeding alpacas. Establish and maintain an international standard stud register. AABA s GOALS AABA is dedicated to: bringing together people interested in alpacas and all other camelids (including vicuña, guanaco, llama and camel), for the purposes of education, breeding, fleece production and uses of camelid fleece fostering and promoting a viable alpaca and camelid industry around the world and promoting public awareness and appreciation of the alpaca and camelid liaising with government, statutory and allied industry bodies on matters affecting alpaca and camelid welfare and other related activities encouraging husbandry and breeding practices based upon, but not limited to, herd health, overall soundness and fleece production encouraging manufacture, marketing and innovation in the use of alpaca and camelid fleece by industry and those with a craft interest conducting (alone or in co-operation with other companies, agricultural societies or associations) field days, shows, exhibitions, competitions, sales and seminars dealing with alpacas and alpaca products maintaining a world standard Register via an online electronic database CONTACT US WHY JOIN AABA? The Capertee is the world s widest enclosed canyon with all its rugged beauty and is a whole kilometre wider than the Grand Canyon, but not as deep. The towering cliffs of the Capertee led to the property name of Kandara meaning Great Cliffs in Hindi. We are relatively new to the industry only since 2008, but during this time we have learnt from the very best the industry has to offer, now calling them friends. We are committed to breeding the world s best blue black suri alpaca for their exquisite luxurious silken fleece, sometimes referred to as the Fibre of the Gods. Lorraine s management philosophy is once you know how an alpaca thinks you can work with them much easier with less stress both for them and yourself. We have animals for sale, we offer alpaca agistment, and produce yarn and beautiful handmade knitted and crocheted garments from our prized fleeces. That makes three alpacas! The herd count in 2014 was approximately 150. After line breeding a white suri alpaca herd, we branched into coloured alpacas along the way. These days we are concentrating on black and that s blue black the blackest natural fibre on the planet. The blue black gene is very hard to get but the rewards are well worth the effort. Suri alpacas have long silken type dreadlock fleece just exquisite blowing in the wind. Today, Karri Heights is striving for a golden bale (70kg) of fine dense lustrous blue black silken fleece. The blue black golden bale will be offered to designers who will process the raw fleece into beautifully draped exquisite high fashion garments. Breeding for excellence, along the way Karri Heights has bred many West Australian show champions, won several national show ribbons and we are very proud of our five World Alpaca Fleece Show ribbons.
