8 UNDERSTANDING VARIOUS TRAITS With genomic mapping, more information is available to dairy producers when making genetic selections. We use a variety of labels in our catalog. While the information below is not comprehensive, we provide here basic information on a variety of traits included in this catalog. WELLNESS TRAITS & DWP$ CLARIFIDE Plus provides genomic predictions for wellness traits. It provides reliable assessments of genetic risk factors for economically relevant diseases in Holstein cattle. Six wellness traits are included in individual sire information. They include: Dairy Wellness Traits Label Average Score* Minimum* Maximum* Mastitis MAST Lameness LAME Metritis MET Retained Placenta RP Ketosis KET Displaced Abomasum DA * Information provided by CLARIFIDE Plus The Dairy Wellness Profit Index TM (DWP$ ) is based on traits that affect health, performance and profit. It includes production, type, health, longevity and the dairy wellness traits, including an economic value for Polled test results. By combining the Wellness Traits with traits used to calculate Net Merit (NM$), DWP$ estimates the potential profit contribution generated for an individual animal. The database used to derive CLARIFIDE Plus predictions used primarily large commercial U.S. dairy operations from across the nation and included more than 4 million mastitis and retained fetal membrance cases each; 3 million cases each of metritis, displaced abomasum and lameness; and more than 2 million ketosis cases. Additional records are continuously added to this database on a monthly basis from producer-supplied farm records. WHEN POLLED IS DOMINANT Polled trait or naturally hornless is dominant. When a heterozygous polled bull (PC) is bred to a horned female, 50% of the offspring are Polled. When a homozygous Polled bull (PP) is bred to a horned female, 100% of the offspring are Polled. Only one parent must have the Polled gene for offspring to be Polled. The Holstein Association USA distinguishes between heterozygous and homozygous polled bulls. Homozygous bulls are indicated as PP. Heterozygous bulls are indicated as PC or PO. HCD CHOLESTEROL At the 2015 Interbull Annual Meeting, German researchers reported they had discovered a new Holstein genetic defect. The defect, Haplotype for Cholesterol Deficiency (HCD), causes young calves to die if HCD homozygous. It traces back to the Canadian-bred bull Maughlin Storm. Animals that have been determined to have the haplotype and are from Storm bloodlines are labeled as carriers. HHH & JH RECESSIVES USDA researchers and international collaborators identified nine haplotypes that cause embryo loss or stillbirths when homozygous. These genetic conditions have not been directly observed and the exact genetic or biological cause of why the embryos or fetuses are not viable is unknown. They ve been given simple names of Holstein Haplotype 1 (HH1), Holstein Haplotype 2 (HH2), Holstein Haplotype 3 (HH3), Holstein Haplotype 4 (HH4), Holstein Haplotype 5 (HH5), Jersey Haplotype 1 (JH1) and Jersey Haplotype 2 (JH2). Recessive haplotypes appear to be normal. Those with two haplotype copies are lost as embryos or are stillborn. Their negative impact is accounted for in sire conception rate (SCR) and daughter pregnancy rate (DPR) genomic evaluations. Most calves born to Haplotype carriers will not be affected. Only when both parents are Haplotype carriers may offspring be affected INTERNATIONAL PROTEIN SIRES Sales Manager Ben Jakschik Mobile: ben.j@geneticchoice.co.nz PO BOX Dominion Road, Auckland 1446
