2 Redaksioneel/Editorial On a recent road trip from Kimberley to Saint Francis Bay to attend a CHASA Board meeting, Koot du Toit and I marveled at the splendor and diversity of the natural environment on route. I recently heard a foreigner say that South Africa was the most beautiful country he had ever visited and referring to the diversity he added that there is a surprise around every corner. We are truly blessed in that nature has been generous to us in providing the best possible ingredients for our enjoyment as well as our survival. I feel it is time to celebrate her generosity. By this I don t mean continue the plunder party but rather awaken to the fact that it is time for all of us to start acting as responsible citizens and honor her. We need to commit. The key here is hard-assed-no-favors bio-diversity conservation. This attitude together with proven sustainable utilization practices must surely contribute to ensuring long term environmental survival, economic stability and social elevation. I for one am fed-up with the world-wide wa-wa attitude of most and their total disconnect from what really matters. Let us not be drawn into this fold but rather stand strong and fight like knights for her. Our survival depends on it! My pledge to her for this year is therefore to educate the youth, for that is where the root of real change in attitude lies. What will your pledge be? Dus, kyk gerus op bladsy 22 na die Jaarprogram vir 2016 en teken sommer nou die datums aan. Baie belangrik op bladsy 4 is die prosedure van bespreking vir die twee gewilde springbokjagte. Enige navrae in hierdie verband kan gerig word aan Wilma by die kantoor. Die vele baan skietdae wat ons aanbied gee u die geleentheid om in samesyn u skietvernuf op te knap. Verder word die tellings ook deur James Haddad gebruik om n ranglys op te stel vir spanne wat gekies sal word om namens NKJV die jaarlikse CHASA Nasionale Skietdag by te woon. Ander buitemuurse skietdae wat ook in ag geneem sal word vir die ranglys is op bladsy 18 uiteengesit. Soos vir 2015, is geen wysigings aangebring met betrekking tot die Noord-Kaap Jagproklamasie nie en gevolglok bly die 2013 dokumente van krag. Dit is uiteengesit op bladsye van die Februarie 2015 Hartie (Nr.033) indien u dit wil naslaan. Graag wil ek van die geleenheid gebruik maak om aan al die deelnemers aan 2015 se AJV, jaareindfunksie en trofee/fotografiese kompetisie baie dankie te sê vir julle getroue ondersteuning. Geluk aan al die wenners, veral Piet Joubert wat n NKJV rekord verower het met sy 26 Rooibok. Verder wil ek vir almal in kennis stel dat ons besig is om lootjies namens CHASA te verkoop. NKJV verdien 50% (R50) vir elke kaartjie wat deur ons verkoop word. Ondersteun asseblief hierdie initiatief. Die trekking vind plaas op 17 April om 15h00 by die Huntex skou. 18 A day in the life of a Field Guide At the time we were managing a tented camp on the banks of the Nharalumi River in the Timbavati Nature Reserve. Now the camp only had elephant wire, two electric wires about jumbo head height that pulsed between 6000 and volts, around it. Thus, anything shorter than an elephant could pass through camp quite comfortably. At night old Dagga Boys, lion and leopard would enter and laze around camp. The latter marking their territory against a giant Apple-leaf tree. My quarters lacked a bathroom and this made for interesting times when nature called at night. On many such occasions I would hastily open the door to go and relieve myself only to walk into a stare down with a grumpy Dagga Boy conveniently positioned on my doorstep...nice! Early one morning I awoke from my slumber to what sounded like the screaming of a baby. What followed next was the whooping chatter of spotted hyenas outside my quarters. I could hear them tearing apart whatever they had caught, their massive jaws crushing the bones of the prey as if they were mere toothpicks. Puzzling it all together I realized they had just killed and devoured a Duiker. A little later as dawn broke against a gun- metal- blue sky I ventured out to the scene of the crime. The only remaining evidence being a few pieces of entrails on the blood soaked earth and the tracks of the culprits. Enough talk on the camp antics! On the same day, I had arranged a walking safari for a group of tourists, the mission being to view lion. Recently the cats had been lazing around a specific water hole and so while the guests enjoyed their breakfast I headed out to the area with the aim of locating the lion and then to plan the foot approach which would take place later. Two males and one female were asleep in some short grass not far from the water. The wind was favorable and we would be able to approach from the opposite side of the hole where a giant Njala tree was rooted in an enormous termite mound on the water s edge. This strategy would safely place us approximately 150m from the resting cats, with open ground between us and them. Back at camp I briefed the guests on the do s and don ts of the walk and then we headed out towards the three lion. I quietly drove to about 300m from the water hole and after checking that the wind was still in our favor, started our single file approach to the Njala tree. After a short while of viewing the sleeping cats, a male lazily lifted his heavy head and looked straight at us. Startled, he sprang up and ran away a short distance before stopping. His brother followed suite. Together they stood frozen, 18

their eyes fixed on us, waiting for their lady to join. Clearly disinterested in the whole affair and after casting a sleepy eye in our direction, she simply went back to slumber.

Clearly the brothers were perplexed and had to decide between either moving off or to impress the lady. One male opted for the latter, flicked his tail and charged us with lightning fast speed. The sequence of events which followed happened in mere seconds. I shouted instructions to the clients to stand still and then chambered and shouldered my 458 CZ. I kept the sights on the tennis ball sized brain that was moving towards us at 90 km/h and drew an imaginary 10m line in front of us which if crossed, would result in his trip switch falling. Luckily he came to a stop 15m in front of us, growling and pawing the ground and covering us in soil and powdered dust. As quickly as he had stopped he turned and ran off to the female and his more passive brother. Shaken, we did not waste any time in retreating back to the Land Rover for a debriefing session. 20 NCHA Handgun Shooting To point your hand and smite at a distance has always filled me with fascination. Shooting a handgun to good effect, is a skill well worth mastering, although as most things worth doing well, this takes time and effort. We as Hunter s are well aware that shooting is a perishable skill and only regular practice enables you to maintain some sort of skill level. There has been a surge of interest in the practical application of handguns outside the, hunting, coup de grace setting. Sport Shooting as an offshoot of target shooting has grown in leaps and bounds. Sport Shooting entails the employment of suitable firearms in a non-hunting scenario way, although with practical application. To this end the Sport Shooter may use a Hunting Rifle on the range and shoot at known distances at known targets. This is not Hunting but Sport Shooting. When it comes to Handgun Sport Shooting, CHASA has foreseen the need to accommodate those in the Hunting Associations that also want to shoot and develop skill with their handguns, be they pistol or revolver in whatever caliber. To formalize this new Sport Shooting discipline, a task team was appointed by the CHASA Exco, and the result was that the NRA Action Pistol shooting format was chosen. This Sport has multiple shooting exercises, some making use of a barricade as a rest or cover, as the shooter sees fit. Safety is of cardinal importance and is stressed throughout the Course of Fire. There is no shooter movement from one shooting position to another in a string of fire. Targets are of generous dimension and the scoring system painless to administer. Times are all par times with generous limits. Shooting distances vary from 10m out to 50m.Modifications allowed to the Firearms are also generous but off the shelf guns are just as competitive. Exercises are usually completed with 30 shots fired. The Vaalharts branch has a small but dedicated band of handgun shooters, and they have started the new Sport Shooting with handguns. This has grown to where even the ladies and youngsters can try their skill. Some shoot with 38Spl revolvers and others.22lr pistols. The main aim is to learn, have fun and enjoy the shoot. Northern Cape Hunter s Association has applied to CHASA, to be able to confer Dedicated Sport Shooter status to people, who comply with the criteria, enabling firearm license applications to be more easily motivated. These will be communicated forthwith. We look forward to the growth of this fledgling sport and to see it contribute to the skill at arms of our members. Chris Fauré 20
