Club Website - Club Calendar for upcoming events - Inside This Issue President s Message Summer is almost here (if the sun ever comes out!) and that means the annual Hamilton Wenham Rod and Gun Club s famous Lobster Lunch, Clam Bake and Steak Fest is fast approaching! Watch your mailbox for the announcement. Mail the completed form with appropriate check to Bob Young so you can come enjoy the day. Prices remain the same, 15 bucks each for members and family for steamers, fried turkey, corn on the cob, burgers, dogs, salad, watermelon and a lobster or steak ($25 for other than immediate family guests). Don t forget to sell your raffle tickets to help defray the cost of this great meal. Call or Bob Young (don t text) when you need more raffle tickets! The Club continues to offer recycling services. You may drop off your old dryers, stoves refrigerators, or other metal items at the Club during any scheduled work party. If it is made of metal you can drop it off. This includes old wall unit air conditioners. We will also take old computers, monitors, and televisions. Drop off is ONLY DURING REGULAR WORK PARTIES! We do not want drop offs at any other time and we do not want to create a junk pile. Do not bring hazardous waste, such as old paint or solvents, and expect to leave them at the Club. We need help at the work parties! Several big projects are in the wings. Work will continue on the berms, our road needs work and we hope to build some floats for the pond to increase fishing opportunities. If you have a boat at the pond please remove it, same as anything else: If you bring it in -

2 bring it home. It is a pain to mow around them and a liability for the Club. As I write this I have recently learned that the chain and lock to our front gate has been removed. If you have any information as to the whereabouts of these items which are Club property notify an Executive Committee member. A piece of chain and lock would not appear to cost much but if we have to replace them it will cost the Club thousands to purchase a new proprietary Medco lock and new keys. Motion made and accepted to approve meeting minutes from previous meeting. NRA and Goal renewal information has been sent in. Treasurer s Report Treasurer s report was read and accepted. General Membership Meeting Minutes May 21, 2013 No shooting allowed on Memorial Day. As always!! Anyone organizing a shoot is asked to notify members via at least one week in advance. Brass collection: The club leadership asks that you clean up after you shoot in the pistol and rifle houses. There is a barrel there to deposit spent brass. Those interested in brass for reloading purposes are to see Bob Young to make arrangements to sort through it. At the 5-Stand Range: Members are reminded to place hulls only in the trash cans near the warming house. Clay target boxes are to be burned in the barrels located in the parking lot. It s that simple. Meeting came to order at 7:30 PM. In accordance with custom, the meeting began with the Pledge of Allegiance followed by a moment of silence to honor all our deceased members and for all our men and women serving in the armed services that have lost their lives or are still fighting for our freedom. Board members present were Bob Young, Jim Maccarone, Ronayne Schild, and Paul Rullo. Attendance was logged in as 23. Please remember to sign in prior to the meeting. Meeting adjourned at 8:30 pm. Range Construction Officer A big project to improve the berm at the pistol house was completed. Thanks to all who participated, particularly to John Mscisz who donated the heavy equipment used to regrade the area. Upcoming projects include brush removal and to install a physical height restriction to force shots to be fired low. Next Work Party: Saturday June 22nd. Come on down and get your WHIP hours in early! Secretary Report Current membership stands at 298 plus 9 new members tonight for a total of 307 members.

3 Chief Instructor The Next Class with Mike is Sunday June 16 th 9 AM to 2 PM. This is a one day Firearms Safety course & will be held at the Rod & Gun Club. Students should bring food and drink as there is nothing available at the club. Course content includes: Identification of the parts of Revolvers and Semi Auto Pistols, Loading/Unloading of Firearms, the storage and function of ammunition, Class A, B, C Restricted Licenses, Concealed Carry and transportation of firearms In Massachusetts, Concealed Carry and transportation of firearms outside of Massachusetts, Pepper Spray; use and legal requirements, Case Law will be reviewed, Live Fire with Pistol and Revolver. Eye and ear protection is mandatory Students may bring their own or purchase them from the club for an additional $ Students will receive their Massachusetts State Police Certificate at the end of the day. Class size is limited and pre-registration is required. Remember, there is no fee for family members to take the safety class. Non-Members - $ with a $50.00 deposit which is refundable up to 48 hours before class date. approved by general vote. Please remember that this is "catch & release only" and "only artificial lures" are allowed. No bait of any type is allowed. "Hooks must be barbless" and if you are using a lure with a treble hook cut two of the hooks off of the treble and have fun! New/Old Business Pete Martin discussed the idea of building a float or two to improve access to the pond. The idea was well received by the membership. Lanyards have been issued for all members to wear at the Club. Members must display their membership cards. Good of the Order Here is link for sign-up or call Mike P. = Call for New Members. Nine applications for membership were received, reviewed, and unanimously The Club is seeking a volunteer to maintain the small equipment. WHIP hours will be issued for the work performed. GOAL has sponsored a Bill in the Senate to investigate and correct abuse in the issuance of a LTC. Range should be kept clean.

4 A member who owns a canoe that is chained to a tree will be asked to remove it. A military shoot will be posted shortly. Any rifle that you wish to shoot will be allowed. See Brian Loebelenz. The annual cookout will occur on Saturday August 10 th. It is important to always lock both gates when entering and leaving the Club. Newsletter Deadline: The Tuesday 7 days before the monthly membership meeting. News from the Hollow / 5 - Stand Sunday & Wednesday Morning Shoots at 10 AM are ongoing. The cost is $4.00 for a round of 25 clays thrown from the 6 station course. Come on down and break some clays! Long Term Planning Committee Action Targets at the Pistol House / the Brass Factory & Metal Target Raffle No report. Watch your for upcoming Shoots. GOAL Report No report Environmental Stewardship PH sampling continues. Please set targets so the bullet lands into a berm, not the ground. The club rakes out the spent lead from the berms. Essex County League Report The size limit on cod was raised to 19 inches, 9 per day; haddock is 21 inches no daily limit. They will refile a bill to reduce archery shots from 500 feet to 250 feet from a dwelling provided the shot is taken from a tree stand. GOAL filed a bill to allow crossbows to be used during archery season. The League is continuing to discourage the development of bicycle paths in hunting areas. This seems to be a continuous issue... Correspondence None reported Newsletter Showoff a little and share a short write up or photo with a brief description of upcoming or past club shoots, events, work parties or your days afield to newsletter@hwrgclub.org Rifle House The Scrambled Egg Challenge / Water Jug Knockout Rifle Shoot will be held this Saturday June 9:30 am. Eggs & Water 100 yards. Any currently allowed caliber is invited. The fee is five bucks. I have not received feedback as to how many shooters so... maybe stick a dozen eggs in a cooler and bring them with you so we have stuff to scramble. If we need them, the cost will be deducted your shoot fee. If you can, please arrive early and help fill the water jugs at the Pond. IF... your action will NOT lock open on its own...chamber FLAGS ARE REQUIRED (or similar suitable device... a J-shaped, bent, six inch section of 14 gauge Romex wire might do in a pinch or a super HEAVY duty zip tie with a second one passed halfway through in a T fashion so that it cannot inadvertently slip into the barrel and cause an obstruction, or a heavy plastic block that fits in the space but won't break a piece off) IF your action locks open on its own, then it's all puppies and rainbows. Big Boy rules here, if you cannot get a real chamber flag, YOU are responsible for making certain that it is BOTH appropriate and SAFE to use and that it will

5 neither damage your gun, nor cause a barrel obstruction and thus be a hazard to others. The bottom line is that everybody must be able to see for certain that the gun is unloaded and in a safe condition at a glance. Please just go buy a real chamber flag. Chamber flags are available at North Shore Firearms for $1.50. If you know you need one... just go and get it. There really is no excuse at this point...fair warning. Remember, safety first. Please keep the muzzle of your cased guns pointed in a safe direction while in the parking lot. When you arrive, if the range is in a cease fire condition... PLEASE do not lay your cased rifle down on the bench pointing downrange while there are personnel down range. Don't do anything with your cased, unloaded rifle that you would not do if it was loaded. Keep the muzzle up and when in doubt ask the shoot coordinator how to proceed. The Coordinator will be Mark S. He is covering this shoot.
