1 Rockbridge Hunt NewsHound May 14, Annual Meeting. The 2013 Annual meeting of the Rockbridge Hunt, Inc. was held on Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at the Tex Tilson Lodge. Some highlights of the meeting included: President Jay Moore reported that this past year was a very good year for the Hunt. He said that looking at our hunting activities this year, we had good sport all season -- from early fall through the Sedgefield Cup in March. Jay acknowledged Huntsman David Conner and thanked him for the great job he did hunting the hounds this season. President Jay Moore also discussed the non-hunting activities of the Hunt. He stated that we are fiscally sound and managed our budget well all year. He said that we lived within our means and provided the sport and social activities that we intended to provide. Our fundraisers were successful and he thanked the members for their contributions to those efforts. Treasurer Louise Golian has reinjured her collarbone and could not be present at the meeting. President Jay Moore gave the Treasurer s report. First he acknowledged the outstanding job that Louise Golian does in managing the budget and funds keeping our feet to the fire. Jay presented the current budget and stated that it looks like our income projections are right on target and we have not spent all we intended to spend. Cindy Morton, MFH reported that we had a really good year. She was not able to hunt a great deal herself due to an injury last year. She acknowledged and thanked Joe Conner, Gary Ponder, Pete Holladay, and Jim Holladay for their extra efforts this year to clear trails and keep the property looking so good. Cindy noted that we have had a number of workdays this year some have had good turnout, others not. She asked that Hunt members please try to help out on these important days. Cindy Morton also reported that Janet Wynot donated her property in The Hunt, Inc. to the Rockbridge Hunt this year. The deed has been recorded and the land transfer is now complete. Janet Wynot has been an honorary member for many years. This gift will increase our property taxes and landowner fees in The Hunt, Inc., but all in all, this is a good thing for the Hunt. A letter of thanks to Janet was mailed following the meeting. Cindy Morton acknowledged the very generous support that non-member Carol Lueder has provided the Hunt this year. She donated many items to our silent auctions at the Kick-off Party and the Rockbridge Hunt Ball. She has made many other donations of time, food, and hard work throughout the year. The members in attendance at the meeting thanked Carol as well. Cindy Morton mentioned long-time member Judy Mundy who has been struggling with illness for some time. Cindy stated that Judy has been a super member over the years and asked the members to keep her in our thoughts and prayers.

2 Cindy Morton also thanked Jay Moore and Carol Atwood for their many years of dedicated service to the Executive Committee and the Rockbridge Hunt. She stated that she hoped we could still rely on them for help and advice. She acknowledged that Jay Moore has already agreed to continue to do the Hunt s taxes. The members joined Cindy in thanking Jay and Carol for their outstanding service to the Hunt. Finally, Cindy Morton thanked Huntsman David Conner and the staff for their hard work this year and the members joined her in expressing their appreciation. Huntsman David Conner reported: We got dogs! He stated that we currently have 32 adult or young adult hounds in the kennels and that seven puppies were born this week. They are the progeny of Rockbridge Cinder 2007 and Rockbridge Omelet 2011 (sponsored by Wendy Kagey and Carol Atwood respectively). David mentioned that he is a big fan of Cinder. He stated that we had a good season and ran a lot of foxes this year. David Conner also reported on the Sedgefield Cup (Carolina Foxhound Performance Trial). Our entries were Rockbridge Lead 2008 (sponsored by Carol Lueder), Rockbridge Timber 2009 (sponsored by Laura Arnold), Rockbridge Legend 2010 (sponsored by Kathy Munsey), Rockbridge Locksley 2010 (sponsored by Janet Wynot) and Rockbridge Whisper 2011 (sponsored by Lu Dooley). All of our hounds scored points and did well both days of the trial. At the end of the two days of hunting, the Rockbridge Hunt was awarded the trophy for the Best Pack of the Trials. David reported that on the first day of the trials, the pack chased a coyote for five miles in a straight line. At the end of the chase, our hounds were there with only a few other hounds. The only field members to make it to end were our own Rebecca Tilson, Lora Richardson, and Susan Conner and they received awards that evening for their skill and stamina. The Sedgefield Cup trophy and the ribbons the hounds won at the event are on display in the Tex Tilson Lodge. The Rockbridge Hunt has now won the trophy three of the past five years (2009, 2011, and 2013). President Jay Moore acknowledged and thanked the members of this year s nominating committee - Lu Dooley, Louise Golian, and Terry Whitmore for their hard work in putting together the following proposed slate of candidates for positions on the Executive Committee for : President Lauren Keating Treasurer - Louise Golian Hon. Secretary - Hugh Brown Master of Foxhounds - Cindy Morton Steward 13 Kathy Eichelberger Steward 13 Rebecca Tilson The new officers were elected unanimously. Outgoing President Jay Moore presented the proposed budget for He stated that the new budget does include a slight increase in dues to $940 for single, $1,180 for family, and $470 for social & student members. He discussed the necessity of slight yearly increases in the budget to prevent a sudden spike in several years time. The proposed budget was approved by unanimous vote. Rebecca Tilson announced that on May 25, the FFA will be hosting a Poker Ride at Broadview to help raise money for the FFA. She said that an announcement would be going out soon to members and friends of the Hunt.

Important Reminders! Summer Trail Riding at The Hunt, Inc. Rockbridge Hunt members have permission from many generous landowners to hunt on their property. This does not entitle any individuals to trail ride on private property. Rockbridge Hunt members can ride on much of the property at The Hunt, Inc. but you must know where the boundaries are and respect them. Many of our landowners do allow trail riding but not all of them do. When individuals ride on private property without permission, landowners are (justifiably) displeased. These situations are one of the main causes of permission to hunt being withdrawn. If you don't absolutely know for certain where you can ride and where you can't, please make arrangements to ride with someone who knows the territory. Most of the Executive Committee and the Hunt Staff know the property and will be happy to meet you and ride with you. Also, when trail riding at The Hunt, Inc., please be very certain that any dogs you have with you are under your control at all times. There have been reports of riders dogs attacking landowners pets and this is clearly unacceptable. Insurance, waivers, and helmets! The new year has started for us so that means new waivers are needed for everyone. For insurance purposes, it is critical that any member or guest riding at The Hunt, Inc. have a signed waiver on file with the Secretary. There is a box with waivers on the mounting block in The Hunt, Inc. parking lot. We will also have new waiver forms available at summer events and work days. If you are not sure if your guest has a current waiver, you may check with the Secretary, Hugh Brown, or just sign a new one. We also strongly encourage everyone to wear approved helmets when riding. Thank you! 5. Got Scraps? Please continue to save and freeze your food scraps and bring them to the freezer at the hunt barn. We ll take meat, vegetables, whatever and the smellier, the better. We will put the scraps out in the fox feeders throughout our hunt country. Thank you! 6. Trail Clearing. If you ve done any trail riding at The Hunt, Inc. then you know that the winter and spring storms have brought down a lot of trees and encouraged an explosion of growth. We are going to need everyone s help to get the trails cleared for hunting this fall. Please mark your calendars for Saturdays in August to help with the jungle-taming efforts. If our scheduled days don t work for you, please contact Cindy Morton for details about how, when, and where you can help independently. Thank you!

Educational Bits courtesy of the Education Committee. Hunting terminology. Check When scent has temporarily disappeared. Excerpt from Fox-Hunting by the Duke of Beaufort Hounds check, or stop, when they are unable to own the line -- in other words when they lose the scent. A check is the time when hounds are checked, and sometimes provides a welcome breathing space. Excerpt from Red Coats Galloping by John Welcome Fence after fence they put behind them and still hounds raced on. There was only one semblance of a check -- at a place where three little roadways met, and here a shout from a boy on a horse and cart up the road enabled Jimmy to hold his hounds on. They had it again in an instant. The fox had run the road for a short way and had then taken to the grass again. 9.
