You can save money by buying the fur clasps and keychains in our craft supply section and doing the work yourself. Assembled in the USA using keychains made in China Code Description KEYCHAIN-G Gold Tone Keychain attached to tail $5.00 $3.25 KEYCHAIN-S Silver Tone Keychain attached to tail $5.00 $3.25 WHAT S GOING ON IN THE TAIL MARKET? The price of tails from fur-bearing animals has shot up in the past few years. There are a number of reasons for this. First of all, the demand for fur in general has been very strong, with heavy buying particularly from China and Russia. An auction room in Toronto that used to have just a few oldsters buying 15 or 20 years ago became so full with overseas buyers that the auction house had to expand the size of the auction room dramatically. There are now up to 700 buyers bidding on the same furs that 50 to 100 buyers bid on in the past. While we rarely see much more than fur trim on hoods on winter coats in North America, the Chinese and Russians use fur everywhere. The airport in Beijing in winter is full of people wearing fur. I was in a small town south of Beijing and saw a young woman in a small store with scrap fur glued to her boots. I could never figure out where all of this tiny scrap was going until I saw that. Even a 1 by 3 scrap of fur glued to a pair of boots makes it classy. In Scandinavia there are many fur farms raising beautiful ranch-raised foxes and mink. These farms were located there because the animals could eat the scraps from the fishing industry. Like most factory farms everywhere, people look for ways to reduce costs. As with other animals, the farmers discovered that if they bob or cut off the tails when the animals are young, the animals do not waste food and energy growing tails. Many of the skins coming from Scandinavia these days no longer have tails on them to begin with. Along with the cost cutting at the ranches, the tanneries have discovered that it is cheaper to tan a fox or coyote if it does not have the tail on it. To complicate matters, most of the fur fashion industry in North America has disappeared. The tails were often a by-product of firms here cutting skins to make fur coats, hats, or other items. Most of this business has dried up and the work is now being done in China. The tails are not here anymore. The simple answer is that prices have shot up because the supply has gone down and the demand has gone up.
