He was educated in England and went to Sandhurst, and as an officer he joined the Cheshire Regiment and returned to India in around As a Major he went on to serve with the 5th, the 4th and the 2nd Prince of Wales' Own Gurkhas. He shot his first tiger in In 1948 he went to live in Cornwall, having married Evelyn Caroline, and as a hunter with a real compassion with animals and their surroundings he joined the RSPCA as an Inspector.
