NASP FINAL REPORT 3 Online Survey Results EXECUTIVE SUMMARY AND RECOMMENDATIONS o The online survey was started by 1734 individuals with 1236 ultimately completing the request. This suggests a response rate of 71.28% regarding those who opened the survey and those who chose to complete it. The additional support and push from both the National Archery in the Schools Program and Foundations to increase the response rate has certainly enhanced the number of surveys completed by participants. 498 individuals started, but did not complete the online survey. If this research program continues in subsequent years, this may suggest that an adjustment to survey content and length is needed. o Of those who completed the survey, 46% (494) were boys and 54% (581) were girls. This equal gender representation of boys and girls is a notable statistic. The remaining survey respondents did not indicate a gender. o A large majority of participants were from: Kentucky (190), Hawaii (139), Michigan (133), Pennsylvania (137), South Carolina (93), Missouri (68), Minnesota (62), Ohio (55), Virginia (39), Iowa (41), Georgia (28), Florida (26), and Oklahoma (26). A complete list of State and Schools can be found on page 7. Further, it is exciting to see that 39 States and 1 Province are represented by this data. It appears that the NASP program has made an impact across the country. o Approximately 40% (483) of the survey respondents participated in an archery competition in the last two years. A list of competitions was provided by the respondents (see page 47). o Survey participants indicated they often participated in archery for FUN (3.69 out of 5.00 on the rating scale) and for COMPETITION (3.47 out of 5.00 on the rating scale). Opportunities for both recreational and competitive archery are valued by these individuals. It is important for NASP to combine the rigor of competitive practice with the fun of recreational shooting to ensure the needs of all archers are met. o Baseball, football, and choir represent direct competition for the participants extracurricular time. These responses were listed for both those who participate in archery and those who do not (see complete list of sports/activities starting on page 52). Depending on feasibility, creating collaborations/partnerships with these sports may enhance retention for these archery participants.

NASP FINAL REPORT 4 o Participants generally see archery in their school (95%) and on television (50%). Interestingly, 63% of the survey respondents had not visited the NASP website for information on archery. Clearly, the NASP program is helping give young students exposure to archery in their schools. Given the connection to archery through television, it may be worthwhile to bridge commercial/sponsorship time with local area channels. The online presence of archery could potentially be an avenue to attract interest from a younger generation that is connected via the internet. At this time, the NASP website does not appear to be an effective communication tool (for young archers). o In the past year, the participants stated they had watched archery never, rarely, or sometimes ; however, it is promising to note that a large number of participants stated they may or intend to watch archery in the future. After participating in NASP, it appears that the intent to watch archery has increased. It is important to follow-up next year with these survey participants to see if that intent has been realized. Providing students with areas for archery programming (i.e., available on television and through live web streaming) may be a useful tool to further interest in the sport. o Approximately 1000 participants indicated that they liked or loved the NASP program. The 46 individuals that did not like the program indicated that archery was boring, archery was expensive, they didn t know where to participate in archery, and that other sports were more attractive as the reasons for not liking the program. o When asked to describe what they did like about the program, the most common responses were: the archery program in their school was fun, it allowed everyone to participate (unlike sports like basketball which exclude players), and can get together with friends. Similar responses were given for why the participants like the sport of archery itself. o When asked what the participants did not like about the sport of archery, the most common comments were: Cost of Participating, Lack of Local Competitions, and Lack of Local Clubs. Finding ways to reduce the initial cost of archery equipment for beginning archers, and the cost of traveling to competitions, may entice participants to stay involved. The Impact of Archery o Of the survey participants, 46% (569) owned archery equipment. Forty-four percent (198) purchased the equipment prior to NASP and 56% (251) purchased the equipment after NASP.

NASP FINAL REPORT 5 Through additional correlational statistics, the results indicate that when an individual participant liked or loved the NASP program they were somewhat more likely to have purchased equipment after the program. o Participants primarily purchased,, and Hoyt products; with the majority of product being s and arrows. It is clear that NASP students who participated in this survey were persuaded to purchase archery equipment as a result of NASP program participation. Companies like,, and Hoyt can capitalize on this through sponsorships or perhaps supplying sample s and arrows for students to try. This is particularly relevant since one comment regarding what students did not like about archery after the program was the cost of the sport. o The propensity to visit their local archery club after the NASP program was lower than their purchase of equipment. Seventy-five percent (75%; 833) of the participants indicated that they had NOT visited their local club. However, of those who had visited their club (25%, 279), 97% indicated that they would go back to the club. Through additional correlational statistics, the results indicate that when an individual participant liked or loved the NASP program they were significantly more likely to have visited their local archery club after the program. Greater connection/linkages between NASP and local area clubs (e.g., JOAD) may help potential archers locate their nearest training facility. Lack of knowledge regarding where they could shoot in their local area was also indicated as reason for not continuing archery post-program participation. It appears that once they have located their local area club, they are content with the facility and intend to go back. o Since participating in NASP, 18% (200) of the participants purchased a hunting license. The largest correlation between archery and hunting was the increased interest in other forms of shooting after having participated in NASP. A follow-up was sent to the 200 individuals that indicated they had purchased hunting licenses since the NASP program. These individuals were asked, Was the NASP program directly responsible for the purchase of your hunting license? Of the 200, only 34 responses were given. Twenty-five (25) indicated that No NASP was not the reason, but rather hunting by family and friends was the impetus for the purchase. The remaining nine (9) individuals indicated that Yes, NASP was the cause for the hunting license purchase. Through additional correlational statistics, the results indicate that when an individual participant liked or loved the NASP program they were somewhat more likely to have purchased a hunting license after the program. o 82% did not know who ran their state s Fish and Wildlife association. o 90% did not know who ran their State Archery Association.

NASP FINAL REPORT 6 These two associations could be promoted through education sessions during the NASP program to heighten awareness of other archery, shooting, and hunting opportunities. Focus Group Summary A focus group is a form of qualitative research where a group of people are asked about their perceptions, opinions, beliefs, and attitudes towards a product, service, concept, advertisement, idea, program, etc. Questions are asked in an interactive group setting where participants freely and openly talk with other group members. For the NASP aspect of the overall grant project, we conducted 4 focus groups to allow for a richer interpretation of the quantitative (i.e., survey) data and to inform the larger understanding of the breadth and depth of NASP. Sample: N = 28 (17 boys; 11 girls) Grade Range: 6 12 Time: minutes each Group Group Composition #1 (NASP Conference) High School (boys / girls) #2 (NASP Conference) Middle School (girls) #3 (NASP Conference) Middle School (boys) #4 (School A) Grade 6 (boys / girls) Questions gauged the relative influence of NASP and knowledge of archery: Overall, participants enjoyed the program, stating that: fun, teamwork, sharing, participation in a non-traditional activity, different forms of competition, and the individual nature of the program were particularly appealing. In terms of improving the program, the groups mentioned that more than 2 weeks should be devoted to archery and the program being after school (or before school in the case of School A) was a possible inhibitor to full student participation in their school. Also, students mentioned that 3-D targets should be made available to the schools. o NASP should not only strive to grow the program by adding new schools but also assist schools, who have been involved in the program, by providing new equipment, instruction, and incentives for continued participation and involvement. o Also, the use of 3-D targets could catalyze interest in hunting and be a viable segue to bolstering an interest transition.

NASP FINAL REPORT 7 When asked if they would continue archery after NASP, overwhelming responses from the KY groups were Yes. However, when the same question was posed to the School A group, the responses were mixed (e.g., availability, expensive, little knowledge of other places to shoot were all notable barriers). Many of the PA respondents felt that a lack of opportunities for continuing archery could be a primary inhibitor. The limitation is that the KY groups consisted of highly skilled, identified, successful, team archers while the PA group was a group student (school-based) participants. o Most of the participants did mention that hunting was a primary catalyst for their continued participation in archery. However, recreational shooting would still be an outlet for continued participation. But, beyond school, continuation was not known. When asked about prior knowledge of archery before NASP, the majority of the responses indicated that some knowledge existed. This knowledge was primarily derived from parents and relatives that hunt. However, NASP was a catalyst that reinforced their interest in archery. Clearly, an advantage could be gained by marketing the program to younger generations of students. In trying to establish a link between NASP and fish and wildlife agencies, it was apparent that (currently) little links exist. The vast majority of responses indicated that NASP coaches simply teach archery basics (and the associated curriculum) and make little effort to help students connect with external agencies. o We suggest that in order to grow archery and better establish this link, guest speakers and programmatic changes to incorporate more information for students should be integrated. When asked how well the students knew their local archery club, responses were again mixed. For the KY group, all the participants knew about the local club but not all of them used the club. For the PA group, several of the respondents knew about the local archery club but only one of the female respondents actually used the local club. o We suggest that coaches and parents be educated about the local clubs (i.e., perhaps through various partnership opportunities) to extend the breadth of archery among populations (beyond just the competitive) to inculcate recreational participant interest. Finally, when asked about family involvement in archery, many respondents noted that family influence was either a primary enabler or deterrent for continued participation. For the enablers, this was indicated by other family members being involved with hunting but

NASP FINAL REPORT 8 not particularly hunting. The deterrent theme manifested because many family members did not hunt or shoot in any other capacities. o We suggest that having a parent s day or some other form of access to NASP would likely help the parents better understand archery and perhaps gain deeper insights into the benefits and long-term participation opportunities available.

NASP FINAL REPORT 9 STUDY BACKGROUND Foundations continue to support archery through a variety of groups. Over the last several years, has provided in excess of $260,000 to various youth programs, youth clubs, and camps. These efforts continue to expand the visibility of archery and help to improve the development of new (and elite) archers across the country. The NASP program, in particular, is designed to teach International Style target archery in physical education classes (i.e., 4 th -12 th grades). The core content of the program covers the history of archery, safety, technique, equipment, mental concentration, core strengthening physical fitness, and self-improvement. Before presenting the 2-week archery course, teachers undergo an 8-hour National Archery in the Schools Program Basic Archery Instructor Training Program. By the end of the program, it is anticipated that each student will gain an appreciation, knowledge and skill in the sport of archery that will spur interest and continued participation in the sport. RESEARCH METHOD The method of data collection was an online questionnaire using an list sent out by the NASP program staff, as well as a link to the questionnaire posted on the NASP website/facebook page. The initial round of data collection was complete during the period between September, 2011-November, 2011, and a follow-up push for surveys was complete from December, 2011-February, Due to lack of control of the list by the researchers, it is unknown how many individuals actually received the link to the questionnaire. However, 1734 questionnaires were opened and viewed, while started and 1236 were completed. A number of individuals included their address for follow-up, which (if granted) will occur each year to track if and how participation changes for these individuals. Further, follow-up focus groups or interviews will be conducted with purposefully selected NASP program participants. STUDY RESULTS The results are organized and reported in the following sections: SECTION 1: Participant Profile SECTION 2: Archery Equipment SECTION 3: Knowledge of Local Archery Club SECTION 4: Archery Participation SECTION 5: Perception of the NASP Program SECTION 6: Knowledge of NASP, Archery Clubs, Archery, Hunting SECTION 7: In-Depth Discussion of NASP Program

NASP is a really cool way to have fun and make new friends while competing on a team. i like that it brings people that don t ever do anything in school like other sports and lets them be able to do something and participate in school I love the competitive atmosphere of the tournaments, especially the big ones like State or Nationals. Playing games while practicing my shooting. Being with friends, challenging myself to improve I liked the competition The Teammates It taught me how to shoot a It's fun, and you meet a lot of new people being with friends

NASP FINAL REPORT 33 The friends that I made. Competition and friendships Let me do something I love competitively. Being on a school team It's fun! It was co-ed. It was exciting and daily practice made for quick results. Helped my hunting skills. It allowed me and other to try Archery and showed us it was safe, fun, and with practice we could all get better The life lessons that were taught and included along with the archery. Our coach/instructor taught students to "aim for success" in all that they do and to be "on target for life." Our child and seems like most others on the team really enjoyed and bought into this. Learning all the equipment and the competition Competition/fun It gave me another option, new sport, to participate in. Getting to use the s Shooting It s fun, and getting to meet new people. Training for leaders and equipment provided until I decided if I enjoyed it enough to buy my own. Learning how to improve my skills in the sport and getting to do it with friends... going to Disney. I love my team. I love the sport. I love that I've found a sport I'm good at. I like that the everything is provided to the schools, so that any student who wants to be part of it can. The convenience of it being attached to the school, it help builds a sense of community. Every kid gets to participate Shooting the s and arrows That it was there, and that I (finally) got to start shooting archery. Breaking arrows It is an individual sport It was great Friends and an interesting sport It's fair That there is archery after school in the winter it is a good to have Being able to shoot and learn about archery, is by far what I enjoyed most. Learning new techniques and meeting new friends Shooting Learning to shoot and be accurate Team environment IT GIVES ALL STUDENTS AN OPPORTUNITY TO PARTICIPATE s It got my whole family involved in archery

NASP FINAL REPORT 34 I like that its for people who don't do sports, anyone can do it. Its a really fun competition FRIENDS FROM OTHER SCHOOLS Shooting Got to hangout with friends and shoot s The competition Shooting the s I liked competition and being with friends. Learning the proper techniques of shooting the. I like being able to participate and be really good at something that you have to use your brian, but yet is physical and competitive. I also love traveling to tournament spending time with my family getting to see different parts of the country. I liked the competition, and my instructors made it fun and relaxing Sport for a segment of the student body that would not usually participate in sports. Shooting the and arrows and trying to improve my score. Shooting my Shooting against other people I like they start to show you in gym what happens The time spent with teammates and coaches in practice Learning how to shoot a To be in it and I like archery a lot to be on the archery team You don't have to be a sports person to do well in NASP Shooting Competing against other schools with my team It was a fun experience to participate in, by starting it in school it became a major talent of mine. COMPARING SCORES Getting all children involved!! Hanging out with friends, shooting well The competition! The people THE COACHES MADE IT FUN, NO PRESSURE TO SHOOT GOOD, NOT WORRING ABOUT WINNING I was THE BEST! Working as an individual for the benefit of the team Shooting It is for any boy or girl regardless of size or weight Going to all the tournaments Fun sport, be with friends in a sport, competition Structure

NASP FINAL REPORT 35 Shooting arrows It helps learn more about archery my son's are 10 and 12 and they have been in Archery over 4 years now. It's Fun I like the fact that its an individual and a team sport and that everyone gets a one on one shooting experience You get to meet new people and compete against them Showing friend archery Something I am good at...fun, not too competitive It's different from other sports that we usually play. It got more kids involved other than basket ball Student involvement It is different than anything else I have ever done Shooting and competing against friends and other teams The Competition with friends and other people around the united states To shoot It helps me with my aim The shooting and the discipline.

NASP FINAL REPORT 36 After participating in the National Archery in the Schools Program, please tell us what you like most about the sport of archery. Text Response Anyone can do it. It is competitive as a team sport and as an individual sport I really like the patterns involved. The slightest change can be the difference between a 10 and a 9. Competitions. Unlike other team sports you aren't having to worry about what your teammates are doing. All you have to worry about it doing the best you can and trying to make each shot better than the last. Also much less likely to be injured in Archery then other sports. I love that its a competitive sport and that everyone that participates has a lot of sportsmanship. I am really good and i never thought I d be that good at it. The feeling after you know you shot your best. I like figuring out how to aim. My family hunts and it has improved my archery skills I just enjoy getting out there shooting The tournaments Doing well at tournaments and seeing my score get better Fun, meet people, friendly, can be individual or team Shooting I love competing. It's so much fun to go to a competition and do well. I also like seeing how my scores improve over the year. It s for everyone. I can shoot with my son be a family sport Let s me do something I love competitively Learning self-discipline Learning how to shoot, good coaches You can use the skill all of your life in different areas. There is no program at my school. I have to participate through my towns High School kids program. I love archery because of the challenge to get better. It is a team sport that I can do that allows me to also compete against myself. If I am having an off day me team can do well because others can step it up and cover and my score may not be needed. One doesn't have to be an athlete of a typical traditional American popular sport e.g. Football, baseball, basketball. Other students can find success and the many rewards that come with participating in archery. I think that the infinite room for improvement is very appealing (dare I say addictive!) as is the immediate feedback that happens when an arrow is let go. One doesn't have to wait for the outcome. It's concrete evidence and it's right there and there's no one else to blame but you. Going against other schools Competition/fun Competitions! Seeing how well I do compared to everyone else. Friends practicing/going to competitions with me

NASP FINAL REPORT 37 Success and shooting Simple, any one can do it, and I just like it. It is an individual sport that I can practice at home and improve whether others work hard or not. Getting to go to all the different archery tournaments. That you're competing against yourself in a way. You're whole goal is to do better than your last shot, & in doing so continue improve every time. The challenge Its a challenge, personal goal setting, meet friends with the same interests, become a role model I like the challenge of improving my scores. EVERYTHING!! Competition I am good at it and excel. Teaches patience and focus Friends and a sport that i can do!! Your score proves who is good, not the opinion of someone else. Self-confidence, enjoyment, spending time with friends and it makes me happy. Competition. Against myself and others. I love when I have a good run as well, because I feel like I've accomplished an awesome goal. It's also, I feel, a stress free environment too. If you make it wonderful, if not try again next time. Shooting the challenge of hitting your target with a Coaches It's fun to compete Achieving goals. SEEING THE CHANGE IN STUDENTS FROM THE BEGINNING TO THE END. It made me a more confident person. s Improving my score so I can win at a tournament Competition; being able to do a good job individually while still be part of a team; exercise/strengthening It's a good way i can let off tension, and i like to compete with others. I get to go to really amazing places and see and watch really amazing things and also it s is the first sport I actually care about THE DISCIPLINE I HAV E LEARNED TO FOCUS AND BLOCK OUT WHAT IS GOING ON AROUND ME. s I like all about it Like everything in general Competitions Spending time with friends and getting a good score. It is a lot of fun to shoot the, and it is an individual as well as a team sport. I don't have to be the most athletic person to be the best in archery. We are all on the same playing field; we

NASP FINAL REPORT 38 have to use our minds to be the best. I like meeting new people, and the level of competition at the National level was very impressive. I enjoyed it enough to by my own and started target shooting and 3d shooting with my stepdad. I usually don't get involved but looked forward to getting up before school and practicing. The whole program gave me a lot of satisfaction. Sport for a segment of the student body that would not usually participate in sports. Learning more about it. I get to shoot with my friends Being skilled with the old and arrow :) I like the excitement it gives you when you release and get a ten. The competitiveness Knowing I can be part of a team that doesn't require me to run, jump or throw a ball. Knowing that I can represent myself and my school and be proud of both. To shoot the target it is a little hobby I like to do a lot Our team becomes a "family" and we become real friends with our team mates and do other things together other than archery Getting to go to world competition Being able to enjoy shooting and competing with my family. It is fun and enjoyable. For me it is a great stress reliever and when i shoot i feel comfortable and without worry. COMPETING Children really enjoy shooting! I have been successful - winning tournaments that were important to me. Iit is a fair, honest sport. I get to do it with my friends. How students of all ages can compete at the same level - this sport does not segregate by age or sex. The mental challenge ITS ME AGAINST ME TRYING TO SHOOT MY PERSONAL BEST EVERY TIME I LIKE IT BECIUSE IT IS THE SO COOL! I make the difference Shooting The friendship with other people The shooting, it's always fun to go to all the tournaments and see everyone shoot. Anyone can do this sport if they practice. Ability to block out distractions Practicing and getting better Competition I like that it allows time out of the day to be focused outside of school and that u can hang out with friends. Its fun and getting to compete against all the other kids Shooting Something I am good at Not too stressful or overly competitive

NASP FINAL REPORT 39 I like the having to concentrate type of attitude that you need to have in archery. It seemed to help kids try to stay on task that could not always do so You don't have to be an expert to have success Anybody can shoot. You don't have to be fast or big to be part of an archery team It gives myself and others the ability to participate in a sport that is truly a lifetime sport. I plan on shooting and hunting with a for the rest of my life. As a girl this has been a great program that puts me on a level playing field with boys. It's unlike other programs and more people are involved in it. I LEARN MORE ABOUT ARCHERY THAN I KNEW EARLIER IN THE YEAR After participating in the National Archery in the Schools program, please write what you like least about the sport of archery. Text Response The equipment is expensive. There aren't that many competitions My fingers hurt on the string. There is not anything that I can think of that I dislike about Archery. I don t dislike anything The lack of physical activity during shooting. Scoring We are from a small school district and don t have enough kids from the same campus (but in the same district) to have enough for a team at the elementary level to compete. Nothing Nothing Sometimes I don't feel like going to practice Nothing Arm being tired after shooting I don't really like having to drive really far to go to tournaments. Adults can t shoot at the same times as the kids, and it can have conflict with other sport and therefore can t shoot at all at a tournament. It is expensive b/c all the tournaments are far away. not enough tournaments locally Way too crowded on the line when you are trying to shoot at the tournaments...especially on the state and national level. There is no information out there about tournaments or what is the next step from NASP. I would like to go to the Olympics. There is no one to talk to!! The amount of practice time, but without practice we cannot improve There is a lack of a fitness component for the most part. Yes, it takes some strength to participate but one doesn't have to be in good physical condition to participate and excel. Writing the paragraphs on wildlife... I hate to write

NASP FINAL REPORT 40 Nothing There's not anything about it that I like the least. The times of some of the competitions - interfering with other activities Time in between being able to shoot The long tournament times until you get to shoot. Most of the kids don't take it very seriously and it gets distracting at our group meetings. Not having a facility to practice in. The feeling of frustration when I can't get my groups together, or not shooting my best when I know I can. Nothing - archery is awesome Cost and location of the NASP World event. I believe many GOOD archers are denied the opportunity to participate in this event due to cost of travel expenses. I also believe hold the event in the Disney Park becomes a distraction and may "interfere" with their ability to concentrate and focus on archery. Sometimes there are too many other shooters. I don't dislike anything about NASP. It's awesome!! Not shooting well Some of the more immature players and bad sportsmanship of other players. Nothing Practice Once you/your team is finished in a tournament, there's not much to do. That my school does not have it in 6th grade. I went to nationals and they can t get me a teacher so I can shoot so now I can t be part of it unless my school will change their mind. My mom got mad because they told her that s and arrows are weapons and the school board will not change their mind and now I can t be on it anymore and I am not happy. Personally I don't have archery equipment, so not being able to practice more, and the school doesn't recognize us as a sport yet, however, either then that I have no complaints about Archery in the Schools. Nothing Nothing Waiting for others to shoot Not sure NEED BETTER COMMUNICATION BETWEEN REGIONAL, STATE AND LOCAL COORDINATORS I wish we could practice more often. The practice rounds (too many) When I miss the bulls eye Too much of the same thing; i.e., shooting/practice Nothing really. Nothing THE CLUB CHECKS GRADES IN ALL MY CLASSES Waiting Maybe when the string would hit your arm occasionally, i really don't know
