DAYS 7/8~SATURDAY/SUNDAY~NOVEMBER 4/5 AMBOSELI NATIONAL PARK/ MOUNT KILIMANJARO Your journey continues as you drive to Amboseli National Park, located at the foot of Africa's highest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro. The snow-capped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro rises 19,344 feet through a saucer of clouds and dominates every aspect of Amboseli. This park covers only 150 square miles but despite its small size and its fragile ecosystem it supports a wide range of mammals (well over 50 of the larger species) and birds (over 400 species). Years ago this was the locale around which such famous writers as Ernest Hemingway and Robert Ruark spun their stories of big-game hunting in the wilds of Africa. This too, is part of Maasailand, and it s not unusual to see the proud Maasai warrior or small children tending their cattle as you traverse their territory. In this land, animal and man have learned to coexist and thrive together, despite the harsh conditions. This is also the park that has been made famous by Cynthia Moss, the noted American naturalist and author who has one of the longest-running studies on elephants. You might even see some of the elephants that Cynthia has immortalized in her many books and award-winning film Echo of the Elephants.

3 Kibo Safari Camp is a luxury tented camp based in Amboseli National Park, set at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. Its 73 tents offer complete tranquility and privacy with rustic African furniture, mosquito nets, writing desk, flush toilet, shower and wash basin. The camp chef will pamper you with fine cuisine and fresh food picked from their own farm as you dine al fresco under acacia trees overlooking the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro. The camp also has a swimming pool, gift shop and art gallery. Overnights at KIBO SAFARI CAMP. (B,L,D Daily) kibosafaricamp.com/ Approximate driving time from Salama to Amboseli: 2-3 hours. DAYS 9/10~MONDAY/TUESDAY~NOVEMBER 6/7 SWEETWATERS Continue your exploration of this magnificent country with its diverse landscapes and hospitable people, and drive north to the equator and Sweetwaters Tented Camp, which lies in the heart of the privately owned 22,000-acre Reserve, enjoying magnificent views across the bush to the snow-capped peaks of Mt. Kenya. Overlooking a floodlit waterhole, the camp offers visitors an unforgettable opportunity to watch and photograph wildlife in its natural habitat. During your stay here, you will also visit the 200-acre Chimpanzee sanctuary that has been set up here. Although chimps are not indigenous to Kenya, the aim of the project, initiated by Kenya Wildlife Services and the Jane Goodall Institute, was to set up a colony where chimps could be introduced, rehabilitated and taught to fend for themselves in an area similar to their natural living conditions. Priority is given to orphaned and abused chimps. The Sanctuary currently has 41 chimps, including two babies born in the Sanctuary. While here, you can enjoy a guided optional walking safari, as well as camel safaris, and horse-back riding. In the evening, you can enjoy an optional night drive (currently $100 per person) where you may see nocturnal animals such as aardvark, aardwolf, genet, caracal, porcupine, spring hare and galagos. During your drive, stop and feast your eyes on the brilliant star-studded sky, also take a moment to absorb the wondrous African night. This is definitely what Mother Nature intended. Exquisitely appointed tents under thatched roof have en-suite facilities and private verandahs. Relax at the Waterhole Bar for uninterrupted views of visiting wildlife or cozy up to a blazing log fire in the Kashoggi Bar and Lounge. In the heat of the day, take a refreshing dip in the pool. Sundowner cocktails, excellent cuisine, safari luncheons, bush dinners and campfire suppers create a truly unforgettable safari. While here, you will have the option of a night wildlife drive to see those creatures that do their prowling by moonlight. Overnights at SWEETWATERS TENTED CAMP. (B,L,D Daily) Approximate driving time from Amboseli to Sweetwaters: 8-9 hours

4 DAYS 11/12/13/14~WEDNESDAY/THURSDAY/FRIDAY/SATURDAY~NOVEMBER 8/9/10/11 MEIBAE Spend the next four days with Mary Wykstra and the Samburu field officers visiting the local communities with which she has been working for the last several years. Maibae means liked in Samburu, yet until recently the area hasn t had many positive aspects to offer wildlife, tourists or, indeed, its own communities. Its history is plagued with high levels of poaching, cattle rustling and habitat degradation due to poor management. The insecurity affected the neighboring community conservancies of West Gate and Namunak, as well, who encouraged the communities in Meibae to start looking for solutions. As a critical wildlife corridor and prime habitat for the cheetah and the endangered Grevy s zebra, increasing the security in Meibae was also of high importance to the Kenya Wildlife Service who strongly backed their 2009 bid to join NRT, Northern Rangelands Trust, which was established in NRT s mission is to develop resilient community conservancies which transform people s lives, secure peace and conserve natural resources through raising funds, training and oversight. You will have your vehicle and driver at your disposal. During your time here you will see first-hand the results of Action for Cheetahs and various community projects. You will participate in research of the environment that supports the cheetah and the dynamic people living with wildlife in this region. Overnights at MEIBAE arranged through MARY WYKSTRA. (Meals with ACK) Approximate driving time from Samburu to Meibae: 2 hours DAYS 15/16~SUNDAY/MONDAY~NOVEMBER 12/13 SAMBURU RESERVE Continue your drive north through rich farm land, en route to Samburu Reserve, which lies 200 miles north of Nairobi on the hot and arid fringes of the vast northern region of Kenya. The reserve is within the lands of the colorful Samburu people, close relatives of the Maasai, and home to a number of wildlife species rarely found elsewhere in Kenya: Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, and Beisa oryx, all found only north of the equator. The graceful gerenuk, an antelope with its characteristic long neck, spends much of its time in a bipedal stance seeking relaxation in the sparse scrub that grows in this harsh terrain. This dramatic landscape is blanketed by the hot equatorial sun for most of the year. Relief comes from the cool waters of the Uaso Nyiro ("Brown") River, which rises to the west on the foothills of the Aberdares and which vanishes beyond Samburu in the soggy expanse known as the Lorian swamp. The scenery in Samburu is magnificent and the birdlife awesome. Your accommodations are in a luxury tented camp built on the banks of the Uaso Nyiro River. If you re an elephant lover, you ll truly understand the name of camp when you see the abundance of these magnificent animals in this location. Enjoy the comfort of your en suite tent, the friendly service and delicious food, prepared fresh for you daily. Overnights at the ELEPHANT BEDROOM CAMP. (B,L,D Daily) Approximate driving time from Sweetwaters to Samburu: 3-4 hours

6 7-DAY OPTIONAL EXTENSION TO LEWA DOWNS, NAKURU & THE MAASAI MARA DAYS 17/18~TUESDAY/WEDNESDAY~NOVEMBER 14/15 MEIBAE/LEWA WILDLIFE CONSERVANCY Say farewell to your fellow travelers as they depart on their drive to Nairobi for their homeward flight as you drive to Lewa Downs, a private wildlife sanctuary in the Northern district of Kenya. This is an area of open plains, long, waving yellowy-gray grasses and gently rolling hills, rising in the distance. As one of Kenya's major private conservation successes located at the foot of Mt. Kenya, Lewa Downs has been the Craig family home since 1924 when the Craig grandparents came from England and began raising cattle here. "Leave room for the wildlife" has been the Craig ethic, as the area is committed to the conservation of wildlife and diverse habitats found on the northern slopes of Mt Kenya. Endangered species abound in the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, most famous around the world for their rhino conservation. While you are here, you may see everything from elephant and rhino, to dik dik, reticulated giraffe, eland, hartebeest, gerenuk, warthog, impala, Grant's gazelle, Cape buffalo and bushbuck. Also two species of zebra graze the plains: Burchell's and Grevy's. Lion, leopard and cheetah may be sighted plus, the elusive and magnificent greater kudu. You will be able to explore the ranch by foot, horseback or with a special four-wheel drive vehicle. Your hosts accompany you as you journey through the ranch, and point out the unique relationships of the animals and the plants in the area, from the tiny dung beetle to the mighty lion. Wildlife viewing here can be excellent, especially for black or white rhino as well as gerenuk, Beysa oryx and Somali ostrich. The Lewa swamp hosts a small population of sitatunga where a small elevated blind has been built to offer visitors opportunities to view this rarely seen semi-aquatic antelope.

7 A night drive is another unique experience; you may see nocturnal animals such as aardvark, aardwolf, genet, caracal, porcupine, spring hare and galagos. During your drive, stop and feast your eyes on the brilliant star-studded sky, also take a moment to absorb the wondrous African night. This is definitely what Mother Nature intended. Tonight, you will stay the Lewa Safari Camp, which features large tented bedrooms with verandahs and full en-suite bathrooms. Offering 65,000 acres of private protected wilderness, this camp will give you comfort and adventure all in one. The eleven en-suite tents, can be laid out for double or twin occupancy, accommodating triples for children under 16. For a more spacious suite, you can have the opportunity to upgrade at an extra fee and stay in a family suite, which offers a main bedroom, an en-suite bathroom and a spacious verandah. Overnights at LEWA SAFARI CAMP. (B,L,D Daily) DAY 19~THURSDAY~NOVEMBER 16 LAKE NAKURU NATIONAL PARK Today you explore the Great Rift Valley, a huge geological fault-line that stretches round one-sixth of the Earth s circumference and is visible from far out in space. At 2,000 feet, deep and 30 miles wide, it runs as far as the eye can see. Its walls are sheer and high and along its length, there are many volcanoes, most now dormant. With bubbling springs and geysers, the landscape is spectacular. Lake Nakuru National Park is a shallow alkaline lake that is world-renowned for its huge concentration of flamingos, although these days the flamingos have diminished in numbers and at times are not frequenting the lake. The park boasts a huge variety of animals, including leopard which is often found snoozing on the branches of the magnificent yellow-barked acacias, lion, buffalo, hippo, waterbuck, warthog, baboon, the endangered Rothschild s giraffe only found in this park in Kenya, white rhino and the rare black rhino which is protected and guarded here. For the bird-watching enthusiast there are 450 species found in the park vicinity, with a vast concentration of water birds including Marabou Stork, and pelican. Your home for tonight is Flamingo Hill Camp. Its 25 understated luxury tents are decorated in calming safari tones, natural woods, wrought iron, four poster beds with mosquito nets, ensuite bathroom with shower, WC and flush toilets, a writing desk and private verandah overlooking the plains. Amenities include a swimming pool, Jacuzzi, and massage services. Overnight at FLAMINGO HILL CAMP. (B,L,D)

8 DAYS 20/21/22~FRIDAY/SATURDAY/SUNDAY~NOVEMBER 17/18/19 MAASAI MARA / NORTHERN SERENGETI Today drive to the Maasai Mara, Kenya s most famous wildlife reserve. Here you will have the chance to meet Dr. Elena Chelysheva who is a partner with ACK working in the Mara. She will tell you about cheetah social structure and their challenges in the Mara ecosystem. Known as the Jewel of Africa and setting for the film Out of Africa, it covers an area of 700 square miles and forms part of the Serengeti ecosystem. The reserve is a classic savannah landscape of rolling grasslands with free roaming animals and spectacular vista. Wildlife shares the land with minimal conflict with local, cattle tending Maasai tribes. Spend two days of exciting wildlife-viewing in the Maasai Mara, site of one of the world s largest and the most spectacular animal migrations. Up to two million wildebeest and thousands of zebra move from the Serengeti plains, surrounded by an escort of carnivores, following the rains and subsequent presence of succulent new grass. It is a costly trek. Many of the lame, laggard and sick animals fall prey to ravening packs of predators while many more die in the swirling flood waters of the Mara River which crosses the reserve from north to south. The Mara has its own resident herds and shelters many of Africa's most popular wild animals including lion, elephant, leopard, black rhino and hippo. The Mara has one of Africa s highest concentrations of cheetahs, as well as magnificent black-maned lions. Over 500 species of birds live in the park including ostrich, larks, sunbirds and the lovely Lilacbreasted Roller. Recommended optional activities abound and include a sunrise balloon safari for an exhilarating experience over the savannah when the animals are most active (at additional cost). If you wish, for a nominal fee ($25 per person) you can visit a Maasai Village to learn about their colorful culture and experience a nomadic tribe s way of life. Ashnil Mara Camp is a luxury tented camp perfectly positioned near the Mara River. Its 30 tents sit along the riverbank, are spacious yet intimate and are individually decorated in vibrant bush colors. They feature large en-suite facilities, walk-in closets and a sun deck for relaxation while watching game. The restaurant serves buffet meals, while the open-air bar offers a wide selection of beers and spirits. The modern lounge is decorated with special African touches. Overnights at the ASHNIL MARA CAMP (B, L, D) Approximate driving time Lake Nakuru to Maasai Mara: 6 hours

Here you will connect to your return flight home, arriving the next morning. As your journey comes to a close, you say a fond farewell to your driver/guides and promise to come back in the not too distant future. (B) Approximate driving time from Maasai Mara Reserve to Nairobi is 8 hours.

We work with many airlines that offer the best level of service, routings and value for our programs. While there may indeed be more direct routings available with another airline, the cost of these flights may not be within the budget that allows us to give you the best value possible. If you prefer to purchase your own international air, please feel free to choose the land only rate for this program. The start and end city for this program is Nairobi, Kenya. Upon registration, you must provide your full legal name as it appears on your passport. In the event an airline ticket is issued with incorrect information you have provided, you will be responsible for charges associated with reissuing the ticket.

13 B RING-A-BOOK F OUNDATION Your safari will include a visit to a local school. We encourage you to bring colorful books and magazines, as well as schools supplies such as pens, paper, crayons, soccer balls, etc., which you can present to the children during your visit. Many of these children have never owned a book in their life and the connection you ll make with them is invaluable. You ll find that children in the schools are eager to meet with visitors, practice their English, learn about your culture and proudly share their own. You are often welcomed with a local song or dance. ACK supports a local women s group in Salama where we will frequently deliver sweaters to assist the group in making kyondo (pronounced che-yan-doe). The kyondo is a large purse-like bag used locally to carry items to and from the market, made from new or recycled wool. Sweater donations assist the ladies in making the kyondo if they are of wool yarn. Sweaters of other materials are sold in the local market or given to underprivileged families with funds used to purchase yarn. The women use a portion of their kyondo sales to support local orphans and underprivileged students with school fees, books and uniforms. After seeing schools first hand, meeting the dedicated teachers working under the most difficult conditions and children hungry for knowledge, many travelers have wanted to help the schools they visited or continue to support a child s learning opportunities after they return to their homes. Bring-A-Book is an innovative effort adopted by Classic Escapes to expand education opportunities for school children. The Bring-A-Book Foundation is a registered Kenyan Charitable Trust that was created as a way to facilitate travelers wishes to help the schools and is used to get books into the hands of children as quickly and economically as possible. With compassionate ground operators such as Rangers Safaris, Wilderness Safaris and &Beyond, Classic Escapes has expanded the reach of BAB to Tanzania, South Africa and Zambia, and plans to expand to other countries as well. Information will be given to you with your final documents, but if you wish to help further, feel free to call Classic Escapes at for details. C LASSIC E SCAPES C ONSERVATION F UND In keeping with our mission to provide exciting, educational, and fun-filled experiences that nurture and directly support the diverse wildlife and cultures we visit around the world, Classic Escapes has established the Classic Escapes Conservation Fund to ensure that a percentage of all profits go to support conservation and wildlife researchers performing their critical work in the field. Project support has included wild dog, elephant, rhino and cheetah conservation in Botswana, Kenya, Tanzania and Namibia, penguins in Punta San Juan Peru, tiger preservation in India, and sponsoring school children in Kenya, among many other projects around the world.
