Sunday Feb. 28th Sunday March 13th Sunday April 17th FIELD DRESSING SESSION A reminder: we will be conducting our first hunting training session which will focus on field dressing and butchering deer. We will be using videos from the internet augmented with comments and suggestions from the assembled group. Warning, the videos are graphic and may offend the sensibilities of some viewers. Most hunters have wrestled through their first field dressing experience and won t forget it try as the might and that experience has likely evolved into a set procedure. These procedures work well with much practice, but every now and again you may encounter a method, approach, or trick the can save time or simplify your procedure. The purpose of this session is to share methods and experiences and if you have never field dressed a deer, to teach how and to avoid some gross errors. If as a hunter you fall into the Dick Riemer or Jim Smith (Smitty) category or if you have butchered as many deer as Wayne Owens or Gilbert Ramey then out of necessity you must be efficient. I expect that there are few situations that they have not experienced. It is this wealth of information I hope to tap into with this session. Bob Walla

Hunting incident reports 2015 The reports below include many where carelessness, lack of training or just bad luck were involved, as well as some that fall into the You can t fix stupid category. Hunting Incident Report 8/25/ :12:12 AM BEDFORD 11/15/ REVOLVER 0-10 YARDS COYOTE While camping on family property, a group of three heard a pack of coyotes nearby. Two of them decided to try to kill the coyotes. The shooter/victim brought a Uberti 1958 Conversion revolver down by his side and it discharged, resulting in a gunshot wound to his right leg. He was transported to the hospital in a personal vehicle. CHARLOTTE 11/24/ SHOTGUN 101+ YARDS DEER The shooter and the 11 year-old victim were participating in a man-drive for deer. The parties were separated by heavy brush. The victim had just harvested a doe and he called to the shooter while the shooter was walking toward him. The shooter jumped a buck and took a shot at it. The victim was struck by a single buckshot pellet in the left calf. Both hunters were wearing a blaze DINWIDDIE 9/1/ SHOTGUN DOVE/PIGEON THE SHOOTER FIRED AT A WOUNDED DOVE, STRIKING THE VICTIM WITH 5 PELLETS IN THE ABDOMEN/CHEST. He immediately loaded his rifle and moved to the rear of his truck. He rested the muzzle of his rifle on his right boot while securing his climbing treestand to his back. He then grabbed the rifle to move into the woods, causing it to discharge into his right boot. The bullet passed through the boot and into the ground, shattering the bone at between the first and second joint of his big toe. The hunter was able to drive himself to the hospital. HALIFAX 12/26/ SHOTGUN 101+ YARDS DEER The victim and shooter were hunting deer in a block of hardwoods with dogs. The victim told the shooter to stand by a tree and he was going to the left of him to a location that was out of sight about 150 yards away. Once the victim got to his location he observed 4 or 5 deer running in front of him. He shot three times, harvesting two does. On his way to the deer he heard the shooter fire twice. At the first shot the victim heard a pellet whistling by and then felt a sharp pain in his left elbow. The victim started yelling, "You shot me." The shooter stated that he saw a deer passing in front of him and he shot the deer. The deer fell and he shot it again. The shooter stated that he did not see the victim move from his location.

Hunting Incident Report HALIFAX 12/27/ SHOTGUN YARDS RABBIT The victim and the 8 year-old shooter were rabbit hunting in a cutover. They were standing 127 feet apart on a bush-hogged path when a rabbit ran between them. The shooter fired one shot, striking the victim, his father, with numberous pellets. HENRICO 11/29/ SHOTGUN DEER Six individuals were hunting deer with dogs. The shooter told five other hunters approximately where to line up in a cutover area. He then released dogs and walked through the cutover toward the stationary hunters. The shooter jumped a doe deer and fired his shotgun twice at the deer. After the second shot, he heard the victim yell out that he was hit. Two 00 buckshot pellets struck the victim, one in the left forearm and one in the lower left leg. The shooter was approximately 86 yards from the victim. The shooter did not think the victim would be in that location. HENRY 12/11/ SHOTGUN 101+ YARDS DEER The hunting party was conducting a deer drive in a field with tall brush. The drivers were directly in front of the shooter at a distance of 190 yards. The two shooters fired at a deer and a single pellet struck the victim in the head above the ear. KING WILLIAM 1/3/ SHOTGUN YARDS DEER The victim was walking through a cutover area at the conclusion of the last hunt of the last day of the general firearms deer season. He was wearing an orange hat. A guest was walking along the cutover on a timber road with two hunt club members and heard the sound of breaking limbs adjacent to his location. He positioned himself in front of the sound, raised his shotgun, saw brown and fired once. He struck the victim in the legs with #1 buckshot pellets. LOUISA 12/27/ SHOTGUN YARDS DEER N N N Two individuals were deer hunting along a woods road and were approximately 50 yards apart, but were unable to see each other. A deer ran between the victim and the shooter. The shooter fired three shots, each in a different direction. The victim was struck with a single pellet from the third shot. The victim was not in the location he had been assigned. MECKLENBURG 1/17/ SHOTGUN 0-10 YARDS RABBIT N Y N Shooter was using a high-powered shotgun shell in an early 1900's shotgun. The shotgun barrell exploded due to increased ORANGE 12/6/ SHOTGUN DEER N N N The victim and his friend were looking for a deer the victim had shot earlier in the morning. Approximately 60 yards away, two other hunters in the victim's party were looking for a deer they had shot earlier that morning as well. Neither party knew the other's location. The shooter observed a deer jump up approximately 20 yards from his position. The shooter, not knowing the otherhunters were beyond the deer, shot at the deer. He missed and hit the victim in the upper right thigh. POWHATAN 1/31/ SHOTGUN UNKNOWN QUAIL N N N Four quail hunters were walking somewhat in a lline, down a grade, in a wooded area. One of the hunters stepped forward of the line and approached the dog on point. He flushed several birds. Several shots were fired from behind him. One of the shots hit him in the legs. All four hunters were wearing blaze orange hats and coats. SCOTT 1/3/ RIFLE 0-10 YARDS TURKEY N N N Shooter was walking approximately ten feet in fron of the victim as they were ascending a rough and steep grade. The shooter was carrying his rifle on his shoulder by a sling, as the shooter's rifle slipped from his shoulder and as he grabbed the rifle to prevent it from falling to the ground, it discharged striking the victim in the lower left side of the abdomen. SPOTSYLVANIA 1/2/ SHOTGUN 101+ YARDS DEER N N N Hunters were lined up along a woods road and two deer were crossing the road when the shooter fired at the second deer. A single pellet struck the victim in the left eyebrow at a distance of 589 feet. The shooter had been drinking alcoholic beverages.

Hunting Incident Report SUFFOLK 11/12/ SHOTGUN 0-10 YARDS DEER Victim took his 13 year-old daughter hunting. They were beside each other, the father to the daughter's left, when a deer walked out to their left. The father shot at the deer and hit it before telling his daughter to shoot. She fired one shot from her double-barrel shotgun. Lowering the shotgun, she accidentally pulled the trigger again, hitting her father in the leg. The father suffered a non-life threatening injury to his ankle area. SUSSEX 11/22/ SHOTGUN 101+ YARDS DEER N N N The victim and the shooter were out of sight of each other on a logging road. They were 243 yards apart. The shooter fired at a deer crossing the road 80 yards away. It was not directly in line with the victim. One pellet hit the victim in the left cheek and embedded about 3 inches under his left eye. SUSSEX 11/29/ SHOTGUN 0-10 YARDS DEER N Y N Victim was on a deer stand with a hunt club. He placed the muzzle of his shotgun on his right foot to keep the barrel out of the mud. The gun discharged causing injury to his foot. He stated that the safety was on and that he had not touched the trigger. TAZEWELL 4/15/ SHOTGUN YARDS TURKEY N N N Two brothers were turkey hunting in Tazewell County. The two separated after hearing a turkey nearby. After taking a position, the shooter saw a turkey about 100 feet away. He shot and missed the turkey, but struck his unseen brother in the left arm, shoulder, and neck. The victim was wearing a blue jacket and neither hunter was wearing blaze orange. GRAYSON 11/13/ MUZZLELOADER 0-10 YARDS DEER Victim was coming out of the woods with his grandfather and cousin. The victim was carrying a muzzleloader over his right shoulder using a parachute cord as a rifle sling. The knot holding the parchute cord to the rifle came untied causing the rifle to strike the ground and discharge. The victim was hit by the.50 caliber bullet through the right bicep just above the elbow and the bullet exited 4 inches above the entrance, causing extensive damage to the bone. The safety of the muzzleloader was in the "off" position with the bolt of the gun resting on the primer. 8/25/ :12:12 AM HALIFAX 12/19/ SHOTGUN DEERThe shooter and the victim were standing approximately 80 yards apart on a farm road leading through a wooded area. A deer ran between the two hunters and the shooter fired two shots with the second shot striking the victim. The 10 year-old shooter was being supervised by his father, the victim, as the licensed adult. T

January 9 th Range Work Party WHAT A DAY! I can t say it enough, WHAT A DAY! On January 9 th we had a work party to begin repairing the Target Butts on the Walkthrough Course. This work needed to be completed prior to the beginning of our Match season in order to maintain our Five Star Range Rating, and to be able to hold VBA sanctioned matches. We had 15 positions of fire to repair in order to get ready for our VBA Inspection. I had asked for volunteers to assist with the task and eight members signed up to assist. On Saturday we had close to 20 members show up, WHAT A DAY! Instead of having to close down the Course for two consecutive Saturdays in order to complete the repairs, we were able to get all 15 points of fire repaired, the range cleaned up of all the old material and the equipment put away in five hours! I can t begin to thank everyone who showed up and helped with the repairs, it was truly a team effort. We were able to split up into several disassembly and rebuild teams after going over the task on Position One. Everyone was working so hard, we had problems keeping up with placing the new rubber sheets and wood for the frames to hold it in place. This was the largest turnout for a work party since I ve held the position of Outdoor Range Captain, WHATA DAY! If you didn t see me at the end of the day to get your work slip, please come to the next CRA monthly meeting held on the first Sunday of the Month (the next meeting will be held on February 7, 2016) I ll be more than happy to provide you a slip for your hours of volunteer work. If you need your slip to turn in for your six hours (in order to get your Range Badge, please shoot me an to christianmrose@verizon.net and I can leave it in an envelope on the CRA clubhouse bulletin Board. If you still need additional hours, please contact me at the same address. Starting sometime in February the IWLA process for completing your six hours (for new members) will be changing. Until that time, we can continue to do business as normal (the new process will be web based, more to follow at the next meeting) Thank you again for supporting your club, without your support, it would be very difficult to keep the range looking good, and functioning properly!

Cub Run Archers Web Site and Facebook Page As many of the members are not aware of the Cub Run Archers web site and face book page, I thought it appropriate to commend and thank Frances Stites (Fran) for all of her hard work to make these a successful and very useful tool for the club. As Bob Walla said the other day, about the only time we see Fran is at the work parties (she is a regular on work parties). Since joining the club she has proven to be a hard working active member of the club. Below is a screen shot of the web site and the chart below shows the activity on the web site. It is clear that it is getting a lot of use, and hopefully help[ing to get the word out about shoots, activities and other goings-on at the club. The January numbers are down because we are only half way through the month. The web site is located at

The Facebook page was conceived and implemented by Fran and she has done a great job with it. Below is a screen shot of the Facebook Page. The face book page is located at Equipment Room Update/Remodel A very big Thank You to Ryan Johnson for the update on the equipment room. The upgrade included a new workbench with target storage, the new Draw Board attachment to the bow press and a new articulating bow vise. This brings the equipment room/shop up to modern standards for maintain and tweaking bows, and the room looks great!

Bowhunting s Big Blunder: Aiming Too Far Back DAVE MAAS 08/10/2015 Archery seasons are getting rolling across North America, and millions of bowhunters are taking to the field in hopes of filling their freezers with the ultimate organic meat wild game. Sadly, however, some of these archers will come home empty-handed because they made bowhunting s biggest blunder: aiming too far back. Let me explain. Related Video: As the Rinehart 3-D Anatomy Deer target below shows, if you aim a few inches behind the front leg, and low on a deer s body, you stand a good chance of hitting the deer s diaphragm, intestines or stomach. Not good. Forget about aiming behind a broadside deer s front leg; instead, aim directly over its leg. Continued on next page

But I ll hit the leg bone! you say. Wrong. Again, check out Rinehart s anatomically correct target. Just above the bellyline, a deer s front leg bone turns at almost a right angle toward the deer s neck, where it then joins the scapula (shoulder bone). Note: To impact the shoulder, your arrow would have to hit very high. On a broadside deer from ground level, aim right over the front leg, about one-third of the way up from the bellyline. Adjust accordingly when aiming at a quartering-away deer, or at a broadside or quartering-away deer from a treestand. Your goal is to send an arrow through both lungs. What about quartering-toward shots? Avoid them, because even if you miss the leg bone, your arrow will probably penetrate only one lung, and while the deer will probably die, it can live for several hours, which can make recovering it extremely difficult. Good luck this deer season. Shoot straight, and just as importantly... aim correctly!
