1 Volume 7 Issue 2 Newsletter of the Yoshukan Karate Association September 2004 Yoshukan Summer Camp has record attendance! Sensei Rebecca Khoury introduces Yoshukan s new logo to Yoshukan Camp Attendees while Hanshi Masaru Inomoto looks on Guest Instructors Hanshi Inomoto and Kyoshi Dometrich taught Ryu San kata, Hen Shu Ho and Bo Waza to the Brown-Black Belts (33 participating) during the day and then taught the White-Blue belt students Friday evening. Saturday morning began with a Dynoboxe session with Shihan Louise Provencher and then saw Yoshukan and Guest Instructors (Kancho Earl Robertson, Sensei Betty Gormley; Sensei Rebecca Khoury; Sensei Jonathon Marsh; Sensei Sean Donohue and Sempai Stephen Dreschel) teach skills in round-robin format. Students also learned Tameshiwari (Breaking - Testing of the Spirit) from Sensei Peter Bakomihalis. Kancho Robertson ended up signing dozens of boards for the first-time breakers. Saturday evening was time for the adult dinner and kids theatre, followed by the Yoshukan camp fire and fireworks. Special thank you to Lisa and Andrew Johnson for coordinating the fireworks show and, of course, camp Director, Sensei Betty Gormley. Sensei Gormley spends months planning and organizing to ensure each camp is progressively better. Sunday morning began with a well-attended Mokusou (Meditation) session and then went into additional training and review of the skills taught over the weekend. Thanks to all that attended and helped make the camp our best yet! Yoshukan Association Officially Launched The Yoshukan Karate Association was officially launched at this year s annual summer camp in Picton, Ontario. The camp hit record attendance with 92 participants attending from: Japan; Kentucky; Florida; Wales; Montreal; Ottawa and Mississauga. Guest instructors included: Hanshi Masaru Inomoto, 9th Dan; Kyoshi Devorah Dometrich, 8th Dan; Hanshi Kenzo Dozono, 8th Dan; Sensei Sebastian Pirrone, 6th Dan; Shihan Peter Giffen, 5th Dan and Yoshukai instructor, Sean Donohue, 3rd Dan. Camp participants had an active 2 days (3 for Brown-Black Belts) learning: Advanced Kata; Bunkai; Kobudo; Tameshiwari; Meditation and Kumite techniques. The theme for the camp was Kumite with many workshops lead by our systems top competitors. 2 Page 2 Zanshin INOMOTO- DOMETRICH TEACH AT ACADEMY Academy students were thrilled to learn from two of the world s top instructors recently when they visited the Academy on August 17, Hanshi Masaru Inomoto, 9th Dan and Kyoshi Devorah Dometrich, 8th Dan taught Academy students and guests after teaching at the Yoshukan summer camp the previous weekend. Hanshi Inomoto also held a private session for senior Chito Ryu practitioners on advanced kata and bunkai at the same session. Kyoshi Dometrich instructed the class in Shushi-no-kon-sho kata and the core bo waza from the Akamine system. Kyoshi Dometrich is the Chief Instructor for the Ryu Kyu Kobudo Hozon Shinkokai in North America. Both Dometrich and Inomoto-Sensei are students of the late Kobudo Grandmaster, Eisuke Akamine, 10th Dan of Okinawa. Academy students also had the occasion to ask Inomoto-Sensei about the roots of Chito Ryu and bunkai applications to many of the Yoshukan kata. As a direct student of the late Dr. Tsuyoshi Chitose, 10th Dan Sensei Inomoto s knowledge of Chito Ryu is second to none in the world today. Toronto Open Championships Academy Competitors, Adrian Pouris and Renée Robertson competed at the recent Toronto Open Championships. This tournament was the first of its kind in Ontario where open style karate competitors were invited to compete with Karate Ontario s best. Hanshi Masaru Inomoto - 9th Dan and Kyoshi Devorah Dometrich - 8th Dan teaching Academy Students in August, 2004 In the words of one open-style competitor who sent a letter to KO President, Sensei Sebastian Pirrone post-tournament, I thought I was an above-average competitor until I attended the Toronto Open. World champions from the Pan Am Games and World Karate Federation (WKF) were invited to attend and compete. The KO spectators had a fantastic opportunity to see the world s best display their fighting skills. The Academy also had a chance to display its own future world champions when its two competitors came home with fighting medals. Adrian Pouris won Silver in Kumite in the 6-7 year old novice division and Renée Robertson continue her win streak with Bronze in Kumite in the year old Black Belt division. This is Renée s 10th straight tournament placing or winning in either kata or Kumite. Of special note is that she has been competing in the year old division since she was 12 years old! Both Adrian and Renée have many more years of winning ahead of them!

NDG Dojo was started in 1968 by Sensei Mike Litwinczuk and eventually taken over by Kancho Robertson. There has been a long list of Yoshukan instructors over the past 3 decades including: Bobby Wilber; Peter Bakomihalis; Peter Berg; Jonathon Marsh; Thierry Debeur; Louise Provencher; James Ashley; and now Jacques Chaurette, Raymond Tempier, David Francis, James Ashley and Rebecca Khoury. Sensei Peter Bakomihalis and Yoshukan Students Montreal Dojo was started one year ago and is up and running successfully. The program is led by Shihan Louise Provencher and supported by Sensei Peter Bakomihalis and Sempai Robert Kalinowicz. Montreal dojo has firmly established itself on the competition circuit with many wins at Karaté Québec tournaments. No surprise with fierce competitor Provencher leading the dojo. Congratulations to Sempai Malcolm Mazumdar who has begun his first dojo in a local area high school. Sempai Mazumdar presented his case to school officials who were impressed and have allowed Malcolm to prove what the rest of the martial arts community already knows - martial arts training contributes to better academic scores. NDG Instructors, Sempai Raymond Tempier and Sempai Malcolm Mazumdar Yoshukan Québec is also well-represented on the Provincial governing body, Karaté Québec with both Sensei Rebecca Khoury serving as Vice President and Shihan Provencher serving as Secretary of the association. Both Yoshukan teachers also serve as coaches of the successful Karaté Québec team and Sensei Khoury also serves as Athlete Representative for the National Karate Association (NKA) executive. Lots of new teachers and students developing in Québec as well. Mazzen Faran, Baki, Bache Pande, Nicholas Thanapoulos, Costa Thanapoulos, Raluca Stanescu and the Kalinowicz boys, Max & Ty. The roots of Yoshukan are in Montreal. Our organization was strongly influenced by the kumite focus of the Hull, Québec region and the vibrant martial arts scene in Montréal. History will show how one small dojo in the NDG YMCA has produced so many great leaders and champions..the Tradition continues. Montreal Juniors: Ty & Max Kalinowicz; Sebastian Calistru; Henri Ng-Mercier
