Figure 1: Gyros NOTE: These instructions also apply to the TracPhone V7 3-axis antenna. Gyros are sensitive to shock. Handle the gyro carefully to avoid damage. Tools Required This procedure requires the following tools: Phillips screwdrivers Flush cutters Heat gun or electrical tape Step 1 - Remove the Radome Follow the steps below to remove the radome. a. Power off and unplug the modem and CommBox-ACU to disconnect power from the antenna. Figure 2: Remove the Radome CAUTION For your own safety, be sure to disconnect power from all wired components before performing this procedure. #10-32 Screw (x6) b. Remove and discard the six #10-32 screws securing the radome to the baseplate (see Figure 2). Carefully lift the radome straight up until clear of the antenna assembly and set it aside in a safe place. 2 If you keep the radome topside, secure it with a lanyard to prevent it from falling overboard. Do not place the radome on a hot steel deck the heat may warp the radome. Avoid causing sharp bends in cables when securing or routing cables in the following procedure. Sharp bends or kinks in wires can degrade antenna performance. Step 2 - Replace the Gyro To replace the gyro, advance to the relevant page: Gyro Page Azimuth 3 Elevation 5 Skew 7 2

3 Replacing the Azimuth Gyro Follow the steps below to replace the azimuth gyro. a. Identify the location of the azimuth gyro (see Figure 3). b. To access the azimuth gyro screws, disconnect the skew limit switch by removing the two screws and washers holding the limit switch in place (see Figure 3). let the switch hang down, away from the c. Locate the set of azimuth gyro wires indicated by a white sleeve under the heat shrink on the set of wires, and carefully trip back the heat shrink covering the in-line connector (see Figure 4). e. Disconnect the gyro wires in-line connector. f. Cut and remove the tie-wrap securing the three sets of gyro wires to the mounting bracket (see Figure 5). g. Remove the gray protective tape surrounding the sets of wires (see Figure 5). h. Remove and discard the two M2.5 screws securing the azimuth gyro to the bracket (see Figure 4). 4 Do not overtighten the M2.5 screws when you attach the replacement gyro. Overtightening will strip the threads inside the gyro. j. Attach the replacement azimuth gyro to the bracket with two new M2.5 screws and four shoulder washers (supplied in the kit). Be sure to orient the azimuth gyro so that the wires are routed forward and downward in the direction of the front-facing skew gyro (see dotted lines in Figure 5 on page 3). k. Connect the azimuth gyro wires to the in-line connector. Protect the connection with heat shrink tubing or electrical tape. l. Wrap the three sets of gyro wires with the supplied protective tape (once around), then use a new tie-wrap to secure the wires to the bracket (see Figure 5 on page 3). m. Reconnect the elevation gyro to the mounting bracket using two new M2.5 screws and four shoulder washers (supplied in the kit). Be sure to orient the gyro so that the wires are routed downwards. n. Reconnect the skew limit switch to the mounting bracket using the two new screws and washers (supplied in the kit). o. Inspect the inside of the antenna to make sure you have not left any tools or debris inside. p. Reinstall the radome onto the antenna securing it with the six new #10-32 screws (supplied in the kit). q. Reconnect power to the antenna, then continue to Step 3 on page 9. 4

5 Replacing the Elevation Gyro Follow the steps below to replace the elevation gyro. a. Identify the location of the elevation gyro (see Figure 6). b. To access the elevation gyro screws, disconnect the skew limit switch by removing the two screws and washers holding the limit switch in place (see Figure 7). let the switch hang down, away from the c. Locate the set of elevation wires indicated by a green sleeve under the heat shrink on the set of wires (see Figure 6). d. Carefully strip back the heat shrink covering the in-line connector for the green-sleeved set of gyro wires (see Figure 6). e. Disconnect the gyro wires in-line connector. f. Cut and remove the tie-wrap securing the three sets of gyro wires to the mounting bracket (see Figure 6). g. Remove the gray protective tape surrounding the sets of wires (see Figure 6). h. Remove and discard the two M2.5 screws securing the elevation gyro to the bracket (see Figure 7). Remove the four shoulder washers (one on each side) and set aside. i. Discard the old gyro. 6 l. Wrap the three sets of gyro wires with the supplied protective tape (once around), then use a new tie-wrap to secure the cables to the bracket (see Figure 6 on page 5). m. Reconnect the skew limit switch to the mounting bracket using the two new screws and washers (supplied in the kit). n. Inspect the inside of the antenna to make sure you have not left any tools or debris inside. o. Reinstall the radome onto the antenna securing it with the new #10-32 screws (supplied in the kit). p. Reconnect power to the antenna. q. Continue to Step 3 on page 9. 6

7 Replacing the Skew Gyro Follow the steps below to replace the skew gyro. a. Identify the location of the skew gyro (see Figure 8). b. To access the skew gyro screws, disconnect the skew limit switch by removing the two screws and washers holding the limit switch in place (see Figure 9). let the switch hang down, away from the c. In addition, to access the skew gyro screws, disconnect the elevation gyro from the gyro mounting bracket by removing the two M2.5 screws and four shoulder washers securing the elevation gyro to the bracket (see Figure 9). Locate the set of skew wires indicated by a black sleeve under the heat shrink on the set of wires (see Figure 8). e. Carefully strip back the heat shrink covering the in-line connector for the black-sleeved set of gyro wires (see Figure 8). f. Disconnect the gyro wires in-line connector. g. Cut and remove the tie-wrap securing the three sets of gyro wires to the mounting bracket (see Figure 8). h. Remove the gray protective tape surrounding the sets of wires (see Figure 8). i. Remove and discard the two M2.5 screws securing the skew gyro to the bracket (see Figure 10). Remove the four shoulder washers (one on each side) and set aside. j. Discard the old gyro. 8 Do not overtighten the M2.5 screws when you attach the replacement gyro. Overtightening will strip the inside threads of the gyro. k. Attach the replacement skew gyro to the bracket with two new M2.5 screws and four shoulder washers (supplied in the kit). Be sure to orient the skew gyro so that the wires are routed downwards. l. Connect the skew gyro wires to the in-line connector. Protect the connection with heat shrink tubing or electrical tape. m. Wrap the three sets of gyro wires with the supplied protective tape (once around), then use a new tie-wrap to secure the cables to the bracket (see Figure 8 on page 7). n. Reconnect the elevation gyro to the mounting bracket using the two new M2.5 screws and four shoulder washers (supplied in the kit). Be sure to orient the gyro so that the wires are routed downwards. o. Reconnect the skew limit switch to the mounting bracket using the two new screws and washers (supplied in the kit). p. Inspect the inside of the antenna to make sure you have not left any tools or debris inside. q. Reinstall the radome onto the antenna securing it with the six new #10-32 screws (supplied in the kit). r. Reconnect power to the antenna. s. Continue to the next page. 8

9 Step 3 - Calibrate the Gyros Figure 11: Calibrating the Gyros Calibrate the gyros only while the vessel is stationary at dock in calm seas. Press MENUS until DIAGNOSTIC TOOLS is displayed. a. Turn on the CommBox-ACU and modem and wait five minutes for system startup. b. At the CommBox-ACU s front panel, press MENUS until the display shows DIAGNOSTIC TOOLS (see Figure 11). c. Press ACCEPT. d. At KVH SUPPORT IP, press NEXT. e. At CALIBRATE GYROS, press ACCEPT. f. At PROCEED WITH CAL?, press ACCEPT. g. Verify that the azimuth (AZ), elevation (EL), and skew gyros all pass (P). h. Test the system for normal operation. If the problem persists, contact KVH Technical Support.
