4 HIKITORI -A FULL DRAW In most kyudo schools, the word for the fifth coordination is Hikiwake and it s defined as the draw or drawing apart. In our particular Chikurin training we use the word Hikitori for the fifth coordination, and it s defined as pulling. Pulling seems to be a narrow definition since there is primarily pushing in the draw. In our first shot training we are instructed to begin the coordination first by pushing out without pulling and at a particular point we harmonize the two actions. In practicing and studying this coordination we need to ask why we emphasize pushing first before pulling as well as what other areas of coordination are needed. There are five basic challenges of coordination in Hikitori : 1. Relaxing and harmonizing the left and right sides of our limbs and upper body (left side is Yunde and right side is Mete.) The action of the left shoulder needs to form the correct relaxed tension as well as harmonizing with the right shoulder. 2. The coordinated action of the yumi hand and wrist along with the action of tenouchi. 3. The coordination of kake hand tension with the power of the draw in the elbow of the right arm. 4. Daisan and the Rainbow Draw. (Daisan means mostly pushing two thirds strength and pulling with one third strength.) 5. o pull the arrow length completely. The challenges of coordination in Hikitori is how we learn to place, feel, harmonize, and move our attention to various contributing areas of the draw. Proper attention to the body is the key. In Kyudo when our mind is mechanically in itself and not connected to attending to sensations in parts of our body or our body as a whole we tend to be excessively tense. For example, when there is no attention placed on the shoulders in raising a yumi or when we first push from the left shoulder in the draw we most often have excessive tension in those areas with raised or hunched up shoulders. But when our mind s attention is placed there our body can respond to that mind body connection with the result of relaxation to a measured tension of what is needed for the action involved. In the first challenge to fulfilling a full draw we re instructed to harmonize the tension between left and right, and in doing so relax your general shooting form throughout the body. Because we are pushing out from our left shoulder focused attention to the shoulder from the time of raising your yumi is necessary.1 It s necessary to remember that the relaxation we are speaking of here is not dropping or slumping our energy to zero but rather means that with attention to an area of our body excessive energy or tension can naturally be moderated to a useable level to use our strength effectively. This is the relaxation we are speaking of. With the other challenges in Hikitori; the coordination of yumi hand and tenouchi or the kake tension with the right arm elbow, or the amount of pushing relative to pulling, all these areas need harmonized attention to fulfill the wholeness of the draw. Realizing all five challenges are necessary for a full draw. I prefer to begin our learning by first focusing on the presence of attention to maintaining relaxed feeling in the shoulders before and during the draw. Arrival for the Instructors Program -> Tuesday evening August 29 th -> supper included for Residence and Villa occupancy; 3. Instructor s program: Start -> Aug. 30 th at 7h15 am // End -> Aug. 31 th at 11h00 am. 4. Regular program: Start -> Aug. 31 th at 1h00 pm // End -> Sept. 3 th at 1h00 pm. 5. Foreign participants from the USA can pay their program fees in $USD. We ve established the exchange rate at 0.75 which is the rate at the present time. Fees are per person and include the program, accommodation as selected, meals and the chiefinstructor s thank you gift; 9.
