Social Scene May 2018 ON THE BEACH - CHRIS REA - The Gerries Ride ( ): John Ulyatt What happened to DONNA SUMMER Eh?! 3 days of HEATWAVE and then back to WET WET WET!!! YESTERDAY, The Gerries met at Greenwood Ave for a ride to the (OH I DO LIKE TO BE BESIDE THE) SEASIDE. Our destination was The Cow SHED (SEVEN) at Fraisthorpe. 22 of us evenly split between The Peleton and The Autobus. It was my ride today and as we headed off, I said to KENNY, 'YOU'RE THE ONE THAT I WANT up front with me today'. As we headed over Sutton Road bridge, Pete D punctured so we waited, however within another mile he punctured again and told us to CARRY ON as he would go home after sorting the puncture. Hope you didn't get a 3rd on the way home Pete?! The weather was fine (shorts for me) but RAIN was forecast for later as we headed via Wawne, ARNOLD LAYNE, Skirlaugh, Seaton, Bewholme, Skipsea, Ulrome and a right turn at Lissett onto the main road for 3 miles before the turn off to Fraisthorpe. HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY (TALK) memories of this beach when younger playing on the (EMILI) SANDÉ. Lots of people ON THE BEACH. The cafe is a new building, similar to Berts at Brandesburton, with wonderful views of Flamborough Head and THE BYRDS soaring overhead. Many people walking their (WHO LET THE) DOGS (OUT). Mushroom soup with BREAD and a pot of KIKI DEE = surprisingly good value. Well worth a visit for those who haven't been. 'RIGHT' SAID FRED, 'LETS GET TOGETHER and head home'. As we mounted our bikes the HEAVEN 17 opened and we caped up. It didn't last very (JANICE) LONG and we de-caped at LISSET (DO YOU WANT TO KNOW A SECRET). We were battling into a head HAWKWIND as we rode through Gransmoor, Kelk, Foston, North Frodingham, Brandesburton. Terry G punctured here so gave us chance for a WEE (WILLIE HARRIS)!! Problem sorted, onto the bike path to Tickton, WEEL.I.AM, Beverley, (WOODY) WOODMANSEY to The Ship at Dunswell. The wonderful MICHELLE serving 2 wonderful pints of Worthington Creamflow. Usual good craic in the pub discussing the day. Home for a long soak listening to TuneIn radio 181.Fm - THE BEATLES. 69 (I'm saying nowt, but I'm sure ROY WOOD) very enjoyable miles. RUMER has it that the photo was taken at Fraisthorpe!! I think not!!!! Page 5 of 16

Social Scene May 2018 HERE COMES THE SUN - THE BEATLES. (9.5.18): John Ulyatt The Gerries met at Skidby WINDMILL (IN OLD AMSTERDAM) for a ride to a new cafe at Pool Bridge Farm, past Wheldrake, just (JOE) SOUTH of York. 28 of us split evenly between The Peleton and The Autobus. Nice to see John SAVAGE (GARDEN) join us. Dick was our LEADER (OF THE BROKEN HEARTS) and a (ARIANA) GRANDE job he did too. The sun had its hat on again as we set off via LITTLE BY LITTLE Weighton, HIGH (FLYING BIRDS) Hunsley, down Trundlegate, CLIFFE (BENNET AND THE REBEL ROUSERS) - Just for you John!, Harswell, Everingham and a left turn at (I'VE GOT) RYTHAM gate (Spelt like that and a gorgeous house with immaculately manicured lawns). Into East Collingworth, Storwood, Sutton on Derwent, Elvington, Wheldrake and onto the cafe - A FISH farm and lakes. The (DELTA) LADY, who served, took the MONEY, made the tea and cooked did a (LINDSEY) STIRLING job. A lovely cafe, well worth a visit, albeit off the beaten TRACK (OF MY TEARS). Double egg and chips (ATHLETE!) and a mug of DAVE DEE = 3.40 (No sign of DOZY, BEAKY, MICK AND TICH though! Great value at that (ALAN) PRICE. Now a question for you - What's the correct way to hold your STIFF LITTLE FINGERS when drinking Tea?...Your little finger, do you BEND IT?...HOLD TIGHT as I'm sure Pete Yates knows the answer? STONE THE CROWS if he doesn't. (I did promise you Pete!!) All finished, Dick shouted 'Let's GO NOW. The sun was still emitting BAND OF GOLD rays as we left. Our return JOURNEY was similar but via Thornton, Allerthorpe (ROY) WOOD and Melbourne. The (HALE AND) PACE was quite fast and we were soon passing through Hotham when everyone was asking 'Which hill out of Newbald Dick?' 'PLAN B up Burgate' came the response. GREAT BALLS OF FIRE!, that's the hardest climb of the 3 options and with 69 miles in our legs, it was hard! However we were soon up and a swift ZOOM down to Little Weighton, up the hill and a (TAYLOR) SWIFT descent to Skidby for a pint of BLACK (BETTY) SHEEP in the Half (BAD) MOON (RISING). Well deserved too and usual laughing/banter. Home for a quick shower and a walk to Tranby Lane to babysit! 82 Miles in total on a Hot/DUSTY/breezy day. See page 15 for the coming Geriatric Jaunts Page 6 of 16

Racing Scene May 2018 Keith Carter Road Race 29th April 2018 A huge Thank You again from me to all the team who helped out with the race. Another successful event. From road sweeping, door to door pre-race notices, driving, photography, catering, race signage, marshalling, sponsorship by Cliff Pratts and Jo Carter, race reporting, and flag designing. Well over 20 people should feel very pleased with themselves that they allowed the 60+ field of riders do battle once again on the slopes of North Newbald. You helped show our wonderful old club can put on a good show. You ll all be remembered in our Rewards Scheme with thanks. So here s to you all and to next year. Lee Coulson Race Organiser & Road/Track Secretary Links to finish videos: Winner and first group Second group Race Report: Jim Sampson Britain has talent and the latest talented young bike rider in the area dominated our Keith Carter Road Race on the testing Newbald circuit. Jenson Young, a junior in the Giant Halifax Race Team took control early with four others, Matthew Lock (Cliff Pratt Racing), Shaun Dolby (Geared Up and CN Cycles RT), Tom Davison (J's Cycle Shack) and Glen Hale (Holmfirth Cycling Club), when they broke away on the first of six climbs up the hill out of North Newbald. The brisk north wind kept the break and peloton compact throughout and it was attrition that formed the general pattern of the race. Young displayed his climbing prowess on the first three primes at the top of the hill, and his wisdom in not leaving the group to try on his own. Hale and Davison took primes four and five respectively (was this a present from Young?). Setting the pace even on lap one: Page 7 of 16

Racing Scene May 2018 He made no mistake at the finish outsprinting Lock and Hale who crossed the line virtually together. Davison and Dolby were close behind. Lovely clear gap to his chasers! Wonderful to see our new flags flapping brightly at the end. The main bunch was ably outsprinted by Jack Moore over a minute in arrears. Unfortunately our lone participant, Ben Warner, crashed out along the back road to Newbald sustaining some nasty abrasions to his arm and having some pain to his wrist. Unfortunately his wrist was later found to be badly broken. Lap times were very consistent over the 7½ mile circuit: 20:28, 20:32, 20:42, 21:06, 21:28, and 20:54. The break, at one time was showing a gap of around 2 minutes but it closed up towards the end. It was a good race over a testing course and maybe the distance or climbing was too much for some but it would have been nice to see a bit more aggression on the climbs. There was a good crowd at the finish to applaud the very worthy finishers. 9 Racing Scene May 2018 Cliff Pratt Ennerdale Crit1 Report ( ): Amanda Dean (on First Aid duty) First of the Ennerdale Crits tonight. Lovely evening for it. I was first aid cover for both races - all remained safe - even the guy whose tyre exploded - sounded like a gunshot! Hull Thursday in force in the 4th cat race: Neil Dean, Doug Jaram, Phil McHull, Elliot Jackoby and Lee Walton on the start line. There was a break which Phil got into and Neil amazingly bridged achieving his highest heart rate in some time. After recovering he got stuck in helping keep the break of 6 ahead and finally leading the sprint to help Phil win. Neil finished in 4th. Meanwhile back in the peloton Elliot took 2nd place giving him 8th overall with Doug hot on his wheel taking 9 th place. Fantastic for Hull Thursday, four riders finishing in top 10. Well done to Lee who battled once dropped finishing the race. We also had good club support from Cally, Paul Campbell, Dave Jacketts, George Leighton and Richard Guymer. Great night for Hull Thursday. Phil: Some great HTRC team work with Neil Dean leading me out in the sprint - thanks! Lee Walton Well, my first ever race at the age of 49 was an eye opener. Enjoyed the experience, and I hope to improve! I started off on the line but quickly ended up at the back of the bunch, not realising how the bunch would slow for the corners and surge out. Then, when the wheel I was following dropped off the bunch round the chicane, I couldn't close the gap back onto the bunch because they were still flying at early lap speed. Page 9 of 16

Racing Scene May 2018 The rest of the race felt more like a TT for me, trying to edge closer to the chap behind me to see if I could lap him. At the end, he was less than 1/4 of a lap in front of me. Tantalisingly close! Anyway, I achieved my goal for my first ever race, which was not to come last! :-) I think I've learnt a few things from the 1st race, so hopefully will manage to keep with the bunch next time! Thanks to HTRC for letting me wear your colours! How the series works: 10 races intertwining with the EYRRL. Clubs take a turn at organising a race. Hull Thursday s turn on Thursday 24 th May. Come and help or support if you can. There are two races: 4 th cat race at 6:30pm for 40mins whilst 2 nd -3 rd cats race at 7:20pm for 45mins. Both races have a 10 lap count down at the end. As with all BC crit races, points are awarded 10 for the winner down to 1 for the 10 th place. These points also count towards the series point tally. You can race when it is your club s turn to organise and should you be in the top 10 you would be awarded BC points but they would not be included in the series points. If you ve not entered the series you can book in for an individual race 15 on the night or 12 if you book in advance online. Beverley Criterium Going, going, gone VeloUK talks to the organisers of two events that used to feature in the racing calendar but sadly are now no longer part of the fabric of the British racing scene. This year, the number of races for Elite men continues to dwindle and after the East Yorkshire Classic Road Race was shelved a few years ago now, the same organisers, Martin Cockerill and Andy Cawley have pulled away from a crit which was part of the Elite Circuit Series fabric, many people s favourite event in Beverley. And the reasons for these two races being lost to the calendar is not because of the usual reasons such as budgets or traffic on the roads but because of decisions at British Cycling making it untenable for the organisers to continue with the events. Full details of just how difficult it became can be found here from an interview with Martin Cockerill: Velo UK Interview Page 10 of 16

Racing Scene May 2018 East Yorkshire Road Race League: Andy Abbott Thank you all for a great start to this year s EYRRL. All 90 places have been filled for the full series so there should be 10 marshalling and 80 racing at each event. Thursday s signing on was a bit stressful with extra people turning up to race and no spaces available until standard signing on time was up at 6:30; luckily about 15 riders hadn't turned up so everyone got to race. The start was delayed by about 10 minutes so everyone could get to the start. The race had 5 start groups and all group were sizeable. Gaps between groups were - G1 >G2 = 3mins.30secs G2 >G3 = 2mins.00secs G3 >G4 = 1mins.30secs G4 >G5 = 1mins.20secs From the first couple of laps only a few riders were dropped and were evidently in the wrong start groups (Slight amendments required). All groups working well and advancing. By halfway point groups 3/4/5 were merging and soon to consume 1 and 2 on lap 5 after which the race fragmented from the pace set by the scratch riders. Alex Dalton took the win with a long line of riders behind him. 1st 67 Alex Dalton 2nd 26 Giles Pidcock 3rd 55 Dave Shackleton 4th 62 Billy Robinson 5th 34 Tom Ramsey 6th 49 David Norris 7th 65 Mark Rogers 8th 52 Ben Harmer 9th 40 Ady Hill 10th 1 Chris Hoggard 11th 90 Joe Spivey 12th 32 Richard Gibbins 13th 13 Bob Blake 14th 24 Ben Williams 15th 63 Stewart Fraser Page 11 of 16

TT Scene May 2018 Bill Spencer Memorial 25 Mile Time Trial ( ): Neil Cleminshaw The conditions were good, hot and bright. Unfortunately due to Roadworks on the A50 a revised version of the A25/11 was utilised. Great that an alternative was used however the additional turns meant progress was hindered negotiating slip roads over, and underpasses, with 11 roundabouts along the 25 mile route! Riders approximated it's circa 1 minute slower than the standard version that stretches to Uttoxeter!! Official result: 6 th Fastest: Neil Cleminshaw, Hull Thursday C.C and gave me claim to the Hull Thursday Veterans 25 Record. Just need to find another 6 seconds to beat the outright Hull Thursday RC Record of 50:53 set by Joel Wainman! Richard Walker also represented Hull Thursday RC and he was just 20 seconds outside his 25 PB, and was happy with his 57 performance. To the future: Got a few 25s lined up but not on notably fast courses. However I'll give them my best shot and strive to improve on my individual course bests and place as high as possible :-) Hull Thursday TT Series: Gilberdyke 8 ( ): Paul Kilvington Thank you to all those riders that turned up and rode and to those that advised of their nonappearance. I have not docked points to those that didn't turn up on this occasion but ideally it is better if you let me know even if the weather is poor so I can arrange the start sheet early and get everyone sorted. Another wet and miserable event but at least we got an event in. The course was a little short as if Gil and I had parked at the correct spot we would still be there now trying to get out of the mud. Great rides by Alex, John and Neil and everyone else for braving the conditions - hope you were not delayed too long by the car on its roof on the A63 on the way home. Hull Thursday TT Series: Little Weighton 12 ( ): Paul Kilvington Well after 5 glorious summer days we nearly got wet again. Fantastic result for Finn tonight with a time just 6 seconds off the course record on a standard road bike, with Neil in second and Mark Walker in third. Well done to everyone for braving the suddenly cold and windy weather. Thanks also for all the helpers and marshals. Page 12 of 16
