Lee Coulson has paid 1 st Aid from the Keith Carter Road Race. 6. Website (Chris Brown report by ) Some real progress has been achieved on the redevelopment of the new-look website. WordPress Core Installation The site now has the latest version of the WordPress platform installed on our hosting server which means we can take advantage of security upgrades, enhanced tools and functionality and improvements to plugins meaning that the user experience will, in turn, be richer and more positive. 'X' Theme Purchased and Installed The installation of the new theme was not without its issues, but a few hours trawling user groups, forums and WordPress knowledge bases meant that the new 'X' Theme (voted 2017's best theme) is now installed and ready to configure. It is not a simple process as the theme is radically different to the 'Graphene' theme first installed by Ryan McLachlan some years ago. The development of the new site means a steep learning curve for me, but I have years of WP experience under my belt with the HTRC site, and friends at work who use the theme on their own commercial sites and have more in-depth customising skills than I do, which I can take advantage of. The new theme is responsive (works on mobile devices) and has a multitude of modern features for us to make use of. Page 3 of 20
Club Scene June 2017 'X' Child Theme Installed To protect the core 'X' Theme files from being altered during customisation, a child theme has been downloaded and installed. This means that the core theme can be reinstalled at any time to fix any issues, or upgraded when needed without losing any custom development work. The customisation is kept separate. Unfortunately the existing 'Graphene' theme was altered at core file level when being built by my predecessor which meant that the required reinstall (to combat spammers who had gained access) reverted to the original install files, effectively deleting the customised areas of the site. Photography I have made a request to purchase HTRC digital photographs from Craig Zad. These are high quality images mainly of our riders competing in EYRRL and TT Series events and will be used to decorate the site where 'hero' images are required. These are the large sumptuous photographs seen on modern responsive websites, and especially prevalent on sites using 'X' Theme. A smallish budget has been requested from HTRC coffers to purchase 40 or so ( each) such images which will mean we can freshen up the site regularly and keep members interested without resorting to generic Google images. Mike McAllister has also kindly consented to my use of his photo library and video collection (cycling only!) to represent the social and non-competitive side of the club. I am looking forward to working on the site and hope to make some good progress over the summer when circumstances allow. The intention is to create a site the club can be proud of, engaging with current members and attracting new ones at the same time. The committee agreed to Chris request for the purchase of photos 7. 6 Social Scene June 2017 Gerries Away Day 17 th May 2017: John Ulyatt I always do a blog for Facebook and it's always musically themed. Geriatric Jaunts UP UP AND AWAY - 5TH DIMENSION PK (Pete Kitching) organised a couple of days cycling across in The Trough of Bowland stopping a night in the (SONIC) YOUTH Hostel at Ingleton. 10 of us in total. We had a few MAMA MIA''S on the Tuesday night. BAD MANNERS not to! The night passed in a BLUR! THE ALARM went off early Wednesday - was going to have the FULL MONTY but the hangover won! The DOCTER FEELGOOD factor was evident as we set off - our rear pockets stuffed with BANANARAMA. 'Sure you know the route Pete?' ' Have ADAM FAITH in me' he retorted. 'It's a BIG COUNTRY don't get us lost' we said. Well in less than 1/2 mile we did get lost and Dick disappeared too!! A (JACK) GOOD start. Dick eventually re-joined and after a quick butchers at the map we were UP UP AND AWAY. We passed a policeman 'ELO ELO ELO' he said as we sped past. We hit the 1st of many many climbs more or less straight away. It went on and on for 5 miles mostly at 8% but ramping up regularly to 13/14%. The views were magnificent. After a regrouping at the top we plunged DOWN DOWN DEEPER AND DOWN the 5 mile descent through Gisburn woods and reservoir. Bit SCARY SPICE at times. We continued along the rolling (VINCE) HILLs to our lunch stop - The Puddleduck cafe in Dunsop Bridge. Pea and Ham soup with a ROCK AND ROLL and cuppa = MONEY well spent. Lovely cafe surrounded by mountains so we knew would be a hard climb out. Another cyclist in the cafe saw we were from Hull and asked if we knew Barry Trotter. He was over the moon when we said YES and a regular rider with us. His name was Bob Erkshew (or something like that) and worked at Aerospace when Barry did. Sends his regards Bazza. Page 6 of 20
Social Scene June 2017 Boy what an epic climb out of there summiting with fabulous views of the Lancashire coast. 'Are we there yet Dad?' we asked Pete. LEGS were certainly aching. 'about another 15' replied Pete. Apparently Wiggins used these hills to train for The Tour De France. THE LONG AND WINDING ROAD along the valley was spectacular with quite a few 15%'s thrown in for FUN FUN FUN before we finally reached Ingleton. We finished off with scone/tea on the climbing cafe before we all left for home. A FAB 50 mile ride full of grunts, swearing, laughing and speed wobbles! Hardest days ride I've done since Mount Ventoux Tour De France etape in 2008! A Big thanks to PK (AKA Jonty) for a truly magnificent 2 days away and just to let people know that Terry Jackson has a new nickname - 2nd Left - Don't Ask!! WHEN THE NAME OF THE BEER SUMS UP THE DAY! 8 th June 2017: John Ulyatt After a week in The Lakes and a week darn in THE BEAUTIFUL SOUTH it was time to GET BACK in the (SIDE) SADDLE. THE SUN HAD GOT ITS HAT ON TODAY,HIP HIP HIP HORRAY after 2 days of RAIN, although there was a MIGHTY BOOSH of a (MICHELLE) GAYLE force wind from the west. We met at The Humber Bridge for a ride across the bridge however there were only 3 of us in the autobus, renamed THE APOSTLES for the day - Mark, Paul and John. However to be frank we could not be bothered with the south bank today so we headed for The Cheese Cafe in Howden. The Peleton did go over the bridge. We made our way through North Ferriby, (DUKE) ELLOUGHTON, ELLERKER (FITZGERALD) up COMMON (PEOPLE) Lane to Newport and then onto Blacktoft and Laxton. We were REELIN AND ROCKIN into the wind as we eventually arrived at Howden. Leek and Potato soup and a BREAD roll/scone and a pot of PETERS AND LEE = A B+M Bargain!! 'Right lads let's head back and enjoy that back HAWKWIND'. We were literally blown back via Eastrington (Home of Pantomime Dames - private joke!) Sandholme/Newport/Melton/ Welton/Great Gutter Lane/(JIM) DALE Rd/Swanland to the KAY STARR Inn at Willerby for 3pm and a couple of pints of Drophead which did what it said on the tin! Only 57 miles today but very enjoyable. We left the pub at 4.45 and still no sign of The Peleton? - Blown off the Bridge?? Page 7 of 20
Social Scene June 2017 SPIRIT IN THE SKY - NORMAN GREENBAUM 14 th June 2017: John Ulyatt The ride was in memory of Barry McCollin who passed away last December whilst out riding his bike. The Gerries met at PAPAS (DON'T PREACH) in Ganstead for a ride to CARNABY for lunch. What a turnout! 30 of us split evenly between The Peleton and The Autobus. Our route took us via LILAC SWINE/(P. P.) ARNOLD, Skirlaugh, Warley Cross, N. Frodingham, Foston, Kelk to Burton Agnes. Someone gave me a SHOUT that Brian G and John W had taken the low route to the cafe. 'BRIAN - ENOs the way to the cafe so no problem' I said. The rest of us took the hill that ROSE (TATTOO) up to Woldgate and the (ZZ) TOP of The Wolds where we met some of the Peleton and OH BOY did we ZOOM down to the Caff. Cheese and Tomato toastie and a pot of BOOKER T. (Pity no GREEN ONIONS soup!) = 6.00 Our route back was Burton Agnes again HARPham, Lowthorpe, Wansford, SKERNE, Cranswick, (DONT GO) BRACKEN (MY HEART), up The Poggio, BEVERLEY (KNIGHT), Long Lane to The Ship in Dunswell for a couple of BRITNEY SPEARS. Good to have JASPAR CARROT out with us today. Lovely to see Catherine Mccollin in the pub and we all raised our glasses to Barry. 83 miles on a HOT HOT HOT beautiful day. Barry was the SPIRIT IN THE SKY who shone down on us all day - Marvellous Xx See Blast from the Past photo of Barry and friends - final page Page 8 of 20

Racing Scene June 2017 Vic Sutton Memorial Road Race 28 th May 2017: Neil Dean After last year s successful event, how could I make it better? Answer - by getting hold of the HQ key holder s address, home phone number and mobile number to ensure that he wasn t 75 minutes late opening up the HQ! He didn t sleep in this year and arrived on time. We were using the same Walkington circuit as last year and the same HQ on Walkington playing fields. The HQ is really too small for an LVRC event, but as long as the sun shone and the grass was dry we d be OK. My agreement with the East Yorkshire Safety Advisory Group (who oversee all road based events in the county) limited me to 40 riders in each of the 3 races. I d been turning riders away in the age group as that race filled up very quickly, but I still had 42 on the start sheet before 2 others arrived unannounced to enter on the day. Thankfully 4 didn t turn up so we were bang on the limit. The age group had 35 starters and 31 riders started the 60+ race. In total there were 22 more entries than in Representing the club were Richard Dean and Rob Stones. Other local riders included Barry Warren, Andy Faichney, Nick Nettleton, Pete Fielding Smith and Tim Tharratt in the race; Richard Moore in the race; Mark Robinson and Nicola Moore in the 60+ race (women don t race against men their own age). Each race featured a two man break, the occasional chaser and a bunch sprint. There was quite a breeze blowing from WSW which meant there was a headwind on the climb and a tailwind at the finish. Thank goodness Neil Prendergast brought his ipad to record the finish, as even voice recording was too slow to get all the numbers when each bunch came in. The race was won by James Sharp (Feather Cycles) who finished 4 minutes ahead of Craig Battersby (Team Chronomaster) even though they were together at the bell. The race (left) saw Richard Moore (Squadra RT) and Steve Gibson (Peak RC) get away on the second lap, and then work together until sprinting for the win with Richard taking the honours. Page 10 of 20
Racing Scene June 2017 In the 60+ race, Mark Robinson (CP Cycles) and Dave Robinson (Flex-Tech Ettridge RT) worked together for most of the race until Mark romped away towards the end. At the presentations afterwards, as Dave collected his prize, Mandy told him he needed to work on his sprint! Thankfully we ve known Dave for some years and he took Mandy s training advice in good humour. Richard Moore 1 st in race Mark Robinson 1 st in 60+ race Page 11 of 20
Racing Scene June 2017 Rob Stones finished 3 rd in his age group while Richard Dean gave a masterclass in perseverance. Shirley Sutton came to the event and kindly provided, and presented, plaques for the winners in each age group. Kim Prewer and Beryl Forester manning the kitchen. These events can t be run without volunteers to work at the HQ, marshal, drive, judge, etc. In all there were 24 people helping out at the event. Thanks to all of you. 13 Racing Scene June 2017 East Yorkshire Road Race League Little Weighton: Andy Abbott After a beautiful day of summer-like weather in a week of rain, many riders were eager to race and 67 riders signed on (a few too close to the race start time) for the very popular circuit at Little Weighton. During signing on the sky had filled with clouds. Group 1, a large group with a lot of new riders were given a lead of 3.5 minutes. Group 2, similar in size to G1 with a few riders promoted from G1 Sproatley's results. The hope was for the group to make a catch on G1 without the assistance of G3 Group 3 started at 5.25 from G1, a healthy sized group with some up and coming young lads. Group 4 the smallest group with 10 riders set off 7 minutes after G1. During the first lap dark rain clouds had moved in from the south and it started to rain. At the end of lap 1 G1 had clocked 18:55, G2 21:25, G3 22:02 and G4 23:35. This meant that Group 3 had ridden at the same speed as G4. The rain got heavier by the end of lap 2. G1 cross the line fragmented into 3 groups at 37:45. The next group was G3 at 38:52, they had managed to catch and drop most of G2 38:58. G4 s time of 40:29 showed that G3 had ridden the lap faster. During the third lap the wind picked up and changed direction by 90 deg. within the space of 10 minutes with the rain still heavy. A lone rider with no one in sight crossed the line to start the last lap, how had 14 year old Fin Pickering dropped the fast G3? AMAZING and BRILLIANT!! G3 and G2 crossed the line at 56:48 and 57.00; G4 crossed at 57:54. The hope of Group 4 being able to contest the finish was in serious doubt. The wait to see which riders would enter the finishing straight first was tense. Would Fin Pickering be able to ride more than a full lap alone against G3? As the lead car cleared the last bend a small bunch of riders had already started their sprint. A line of riders headed for the line, it was the young lads. Josh Ravn took the win, second was Max Poole another 14 year old showing his talent. Junior Joe Faichney taking third, a year since his great solo win. Eleven riders finished in the first bunch. Group 4 arrived at the finish led by John Brearley at just over a minute down in 16th place. Unfortunately Fin Pickering had gone too early, got caught and rolled in at a leisurely pace. I'm sure Fin or Max will be winning one of the remaining events. 1st Josh Ravn 2nd Max Poole 3rd Joe Faichney 4th Scott Hamilton 5th George Leighton 6th Ben Warner 7th Gary Trees 8th Ady Hill 9th Robert Beecroft 10th Phil McCormick A BIG THANK YOU to the members of City RC and Cliff Pratt Racing for providing the vast number of marshals, who stood in the rain. 14 TT Scene June 2017 Facebook Lucky Dip TT Reports: Amanda Dean Having not received any TT feedback I trawled Hull Thursday Facebook posts and copied the ones I could find. The times though proved to be pretty fast at the top of the leaderboard of the 150 rider field with Philip Graves (Nopinz) taking the win in an outstanding 51:35. Fastest Lady in the womens event was Kirsty Smith (Team Swift) in 1:03:20. Neil bettered his 57:30 set in the same event last season by 1:28 to stop the clock with a 55:02 and take 13th Place overall. Rich clocked 1:03:02. Page 14 of 20
TT Scene June 2017 Hull Thursday Club TT Etton 23 rd May Paul Kilvington Despite the blustery wind the old course record of 28:56 was broken by 1 minute and 28 seconds by Adam Duggleby. Some other very fast times set by Steven Guymer (who broke his own course record), John Brearley and Finlay Pickering. Charlotte Dalton also set a new ladies course record for 3 laps as previously the ladies have usually (not always) ridden 2 laps. In total we had a field of 33 riders for the event which is the best we have seen for a few years (might have been something to do with the summer like weather). Thank you to all the marshals and especially to Dave Watson for bringing Trigger's broom and sweeping the corners of piles of grit. Neil Cleminshaw, Andy Carroll, Hermione Pickering and Rob Stones Page 15 of 20
Muddy Scene June 2017 Singletrack 7 May 2017: Dave Millson I am always up for a challenge and when I heard about a new seven hour mountain bike endurance event connected to Singletrack magazine I sent out an to a few mountain bikers I know to see if they fancied pairing up with me. The event could be ridden solo or as a pair but I thought it might be a good introduction to endurance racing and more fun to team up. My good friend and ex Hull Thursday member Richie Ralph was hooked. Now living in deepest Derbyshire it was fairly close to him and sounded fun, Team Thursday Bandits was formed. The course was a 6km loop on the Catton Hall estate near Burton upon Trent in the middle of May. Not renowned as a mountain bike hot spot nevertheless the course offered short climbs, descents and woodland single track, enough to keep it interesting for seven hours. We re off. We pitched camp the night before within a stone s throw of the course and start/finish area so we could gauge when either of us was coming to the hand over. As only one of the pair can be on the course at a time a baton system is used so getting to the exchange pits easily was important. Our camp looked the part as we had borrowed the HTRC gazebo to give us a sheltered area to refuel when not riding. We had decided to start out doing two laps each before swapping as this was around an hours riding and it worked out pretty well so we stuck with it until the end with myself squeezing one lap before the seven hours was up. The course had a few optional extras such as a short cut in the start/finish area that required you to drink a small cup of beer and a selection of jump obstacles that gave you a faster line. Dave at the beer tent: Page 16 of 20
Muddy Scene June 2017 For a few laps riders had to go through a foamy Fenwick bike cleaner until complaints of disc brakes not working put a stop to it, cleaned your bike and body nicely though! It was a brilliant event and I thoroughly enjoyed myself and recommend it to anyone who likes a challenge on a mountain bike. We completed seventeen laps, five behind the winners in 28 th out of 51 in the male pairs. I will particularly remember battling it out for two of my laps with a guy in an British Forces jersey quite pleased with myself when I overtook him on a climb only to realise he only had one leg! Respect. Hero Richie corner Page 17 of 20
Odds & Sods Scene June 2017 Here is my winter project. A de Gribaldy Vitus 979: Richard Dean 1984 Sean Kelly, Paris Roubaix winning cobble classic replica. I bought the frame in a Sheffield cycle jumble back in October last year. It was an impulse buy. I wanted a winter project and something to ride Eroica After my Sid Mottram I fancied something more modern. It has cost a fortune and fought me all the way. And it would have been far cheaper to go the Campagnolo route. But Mavic it had to be. I have learnt that NOS means - new stock that was faulty or put back in the wrong box to be sold 30 years later for 4X the original price. Usually bent, stripped or French thread. I was going down the KAS route but changed to what Kelly rode in 1984 (No 185) - a De Gribaldy - very-rare badged Vitus. I wonder what happened to his original? At his home probably. The inspiration was my Eroica friend Darren and listening to Sean Kelly commentate on the Giro - as I sanded away! It is French, but made by a lad in Yorkshire. Enjoy...(except if your name is Mark Robinson - who thinks they are only fit for hanging on walls) Page 18 of 20
