1 Vol. 37 Issue 9 A Monthly Publication of The Indy Chapter of The Studebaker Drivers Club September SDC International Meet - Our Trip Rounding the turn at the Proving Grounds Words and pictures by Lanny and Barb Bertram Like everyone else we have talked to, our trip to the SDC 2012 South Bend International Meet was wonderful. We arrived Wednesday afternoon with our 63 Lark in tow. We picked up our registration paperwork and headed to the St Joseph County Fairgrounds to join the action. After unloading the car and finding a spot to park amongst the many other Studes in attendance we headed for the swap meet which was crowded enough to make moving around and seeing everything in one pass almost impossible. Being exhausted from the trip, the heat and being too excited to sleep the night before, we headed to our hotel for a cool shower a nap and something to eat. We found an Irish pub (Fiddlers Hearth) in downtown South Bend that served the best fish and chips I have ever had. And Barb loved the Welsh rarebit. Thursday was Concours day so we were up early and at the Fairgrounds shortly after the gates opened to detail and position the Lark for judging. This was only our second time showing a car. Last year was our first time in Springfield Missouri where we won a first place finish. More on that later. As we got there early we were the second car to be judged in Class 8. Once that formality was done we thanked our judges, as they deserve much thanks for what they do, and we headed out to see the rest of the cars there for the Concours. With the Antique Studebaker Club and the Avanti Owners Club sharing the meet with the SDC there were a hundreds of cars to see! We tried to see every row of cars on display and I think we did but the heat was brutal again so in the afternoon we headed for the swap area again for some air conditioned relief. 1

2 Here comes the really good part. In the swap meet building we ran into fellow Indy Chapter members Wayne and Gwen Remaly. We chatted for a while and I casually remarked that Barb had always wanted a bullet nose convertible. There just happens to be one of those in the car corral piped Wayne. We ll have to stop and see it I replied. So upon leaving the building we steered to the car corral that we had bypassed in our quest for cool air. And after all we had NO intention of buying another Stude at this point. When we found the convertible she was a beauty. A 1950 Champion in Comanche Red (we think). She was a very solid car from Colorado and though her paint and interior hinted at her true age the fact that she had been driven to South Bend from Cincinnati told a story in itself. We spoke with the owner and tried not to let on that we were both falling in love with his car but did tell him we would talk about it. Thursday ended with a Police and Fire escorted Parade of Studebakers from the Fairgrounds to the host hotel. What a hoot! The parade route was lined with many Studebaker fans cheering us on in the heat. We enjoyed it immensely. That evening was dinner at Das Dutch Essenhaus in Middlebury In. We talked and talked about the Champion. Late the next morning we contacted the seller and we came very close to making a deal. Then while standing at the display counter at the South Bend Chocolate Company contemplating which chocolates to take home I asked Barb if we were making a mistake and passing up an opportunity. She gave the correct answer and I excused myself from the task at hand and stepped outside to call the seller. I am proud to say we are now a two Studebaker family! Newest addition to our family The awards dinner on Friday was huge with the other clubs joining the SDC. The room was beautiful and the food was good. We had fixed all of the imperfections pointed out by the judges last year in Springfield but a new set of judges found a whole new list of items for us to address. One item that was not really our fault made the difference between a First and Second place finish. Somewhere between home and the show field unknown to us our brake light switch failed causing us not to have any brake lights. And opening the brake lines in a grass field to repair it was not going to happen. Barb and I gave up trying to be perfect a long time ago and try to enjoy life with all its imperfections. So we were glad to accept our Second Place showing. Saturday brought us the chance to drive our Lark around the old Studebaker Proving Grounds track. All I can say is Wow, what a thrill that was! The group was paced until everyone got onto the track, then just like the races, the pace car pulled out and left us to circle the track 5 or 6 times on our own. There were so many cars one dare not get too rowdy but let s just say we had enough room to stretch out a bit and as Barb said We don t need no stinkin brake lights. Here is a picture taken by Craig Parslow as we rounded one of the banked turns at the proving grounds. The Lark had 104 miles on the odometer after a 7 year frame off restoration. What a great opportunity for a shakedown cruise! Can t wait for the next one! 2

3 SECRETARY S REPORT Submitted by John Kern Meeting minutes Aug. 1, 2012 held at South Bend International 12:00pm President Charles Kern presiding President Kern brought up that Bob Henning, previous Zone Director, wants our Indy chapter to host the 2013 Crossroads Zone meet. There has been discussion between Chuck and Editor, Richard Poe, about having the meeting during the "Studebaker Nationals". As a reminder, Joe and Nancy Bacon hosted the last Crossroads Zone Meet that was sponsored by the Chapter. Joe Bacon commenting on the last meeting spoke about how busy the meet can be. With a car show, judging and banquet everyone will be too busy to actually enjoy the meet. He suggested that we host the meet during the Hoosier Auto Show in September, close to I-465 with plenty of parking and it would be a cooler time of year. Nancy Bacon brought up that motel/hotel prices will be higher during the Memorial Day weekend. Pres. Kern asked who would be responsible for the judging and are there any guidelines available through SDC having a Zone meet. Judging may be done by anyone who attends the meet. The Club needs to check into guidelines. Joe Bacon suggested that judging could be by best engine, best paint, best interior and other components. Scott Jones suggested that we should have a top 10 category. Joe Bacon thought that a Zone Meet should try to generate an income for the Club. Last Zone Meet made about $5,000 for the Club. Sooner or later the Club could run short on funds. He then made a motion that the Club should host the Zone Meet, the motion was seconded. The members voted and the vote was split. Pres Kern tabled the motion until the next meeting when more members would be in attendance to revote. Diane Elmore suggested that we have one person step up and be in charge of the Zone Meet if the Club decides to go ahead and sponsor it. The Club was reminded that the next International Studebaker Meet will be June 30 to July 6, This should be considered for scheduling purposes. Those states included in the Crossroad Zone are IN, KY, MI, OH, Ontario, Canada. Of course, the thoughts presented here are in no way the ONLY ideas that can be implemented but perhaps these articles will help get the ball rolling. What do I mean by "reach out to the next generations"? The simple fact is we are not as young as we used to be and while we remember with fondness those days before 1966 when one could go to a Studebaker dealer and drive a new one home, most cannot. Unfortunately, few, if any of today's young people have ANY memory or knowledge of Studebaker most know nothing about the vehicles or company. It is true that we are what we grew up with and that certainly includes automobiles. Today's future classic car enthusiasts didn't grow up with Studebakers. They grew up with Camaros, Mustangs, Mopars, Hondas, Toyotas and the myriad of makes that are still in production today. As they mature, these are the cars of THEIR youth that they are drawn to. So, how do we get them interested in Studebakers? I submit that a good way to start is to take the first step and show interest in them! Here's how. Take the first step. When you are at a car show, especially at a club event displaying your pride and joy, try to make a point of greeting EVERYONE who walks by, especially young people. If they stop to look at your car, be proactive and ask them if they have any questions, are they having a good time, nice weather, anything to show your interest in them. Too many times we see car owners (any make) sitting behind the car in a comfy lawn chair or in a group of buddies ignoring the folks looking at the car or truck. I'll be the first to defend the comfort of a good lawn chair but don't be a shrinking violet! Meeting and talking with new people is one of the neatest things about a car show. If you are at a non-chapter sponsored mixed make show, have a few "Studebaker Story" and SDC brochures (and chapter info/membership form) to hand out. Both of these are available through your chapter. You never know who will be the next Studebaker owner. We've seen time and again, die-hard Chevy or Ford guys "discover" Studebakers and form an attachment to them, just like you. There is no reason to think that a young person driving a tricked out Toyota today can't become a Lark lover down the road. Be a Champion for your marquee and the club by putting your best foot forward with proactive and friendly encounters with all you meet. People WILL appreciate and remember that first good impression. And maybe, just maybe, that encounter with you could become the catalyst for that person to decide that their first or next classic car will be a Studebaker. Next time in Be a Champion: "Thicken The Skin!" 10
