5 Notes from the Summerlin Parade Well, once again we are in the throws of summer, and the 4th of July Summerlin Parade is upon us. This year I spoke with the powers that be from Summerlin about our concerns of being put farther back in the parade, and our concerns of overheating our 85/86 year old cars. What a shocker, they listened and moved us up front to the escort division of the parade. For those that do not know what the escort division is, I will tell you. Basically this is the parade before the parade. This is where the dignitaries, ( you know, the politicians, the miss whatever queen, and other people address the crowd). Well, we are assigned the position of E-15, which put us way up front. (note: only 23 E positions and we are #15) However, and this is where the buts come in. We are only allowed 16 Model A's in the parade. In the past that would not have been a problem as only a few Model A's actually made it to the parade, but we were holding our own and more and more Model A's were making it due to all the hard work Model Ayers were doing to their cars. We will start the parade at 8:30 am and be finished by 9:00 am which made us all very happy. However this year was different for some reason. There was controversy from the start. Where to have breakfast following the Summerlin 4th of July Parade. What was the menu going to be, where were we going, and the cost. All minor compared to the now nervous stomach that I now have. Who was going to be in the parade due to the numbers of Model A's that we were allowed. After being the Summerlin 4th of July Parade chairperson for the thirteenth year it should not have been a surprise to me. But these Model Ayers can and will surprise even the most seasoned veteran like me, in this regard. For the fist time I now have a new problem. You see before it was hard work to get enough people with their Model A's to make a showing. This year we had so many Model A's that wanted to be in the parade that I have to make a decision of who goes and who doesn't. What a predicament. Whoa is me, whoa is me, what to do. Well, Tony and Jan Gardner open their beautiful home up to the Model Ayers that were going to be in the parade and we graciously accepted. Problem #1 solved. Since this was going to be a club event the members of our wonderful Model A club would help defray the cost. Problem # 2 solved. What about the menu you ask? Well after careful deliberations, Jan Gardner and Pat White decided to have breakfast burito's, but ( here's are those buts again) it would be to costly to order in what we felt was needed. So problem #3 looked like. what do we do now. Well a recipe was obtained and the two women decided they needed to make a dry run, sorta. Well they hatched a scheme and found some military type volunteers. You know, I need a volunteer, you, you, and you. A date was set and the judging began. Not bad for the first time. Needs a little of this, a little of that, etc. Now problem # 3 solved. Whoa is me, still have to decide who goes to the parade and who doesn't. Well as I said earlier, I should have known. You see the Summerlin July 4th parade is always hot. and through the fault of no one, things start to happen. This Model A won't stay running. This Model A won't start. This Model A is overheating, never done that before. But, ( here are those buts again) I am not worried this time because I have so many Model Ayers that wanted to go that it would not be a problem. The 4th came and we all met at our meeting location. We caravan'd to our #E-15 spot and signed in. We decorated our Model A's with the 4th of July scheme and waited for the start of the parade. After the parade we went to Tony & Jan Gardners home and what a spread Jan, Pat, Linda and Jan's daughter Becky put on. Not only did they make delicious burito's, but scrambled eggs, sausages, muffins (mini & full size) assorted, orange juice, coffee ( regular & decafe ) plus many other items to much to remember. What a job they did, my hat goes off to them for making this breakfast better than any you could buy. In summary we made of great showing and all the Model A's were beautiful. We were notified that we had won 3rd place for the best car club. I was more than a little disappointed as the Cadillac club and the Military club came in 1st & 2nd respectfully. But ( there's that but again) That's the way it goes sometimes. Can't win them all. All in all we had a great day, great showing. great breakfast, and great conversations with club members. Like all great days and events, there comes a time when we must say so long for now. So, one by one or two by two the members left and rode off into the sunset, ( okay the afternoon, well more like late morning ) with Their beautiful Model A's. WHAT A GREAT CLUB WE HAVE. Hal White 5
