3 THE PREZ SEZ BY PRESIDENT BOB TAYLOR The club members were treated to a 30s and 40s fashion show power point presentation by Chris Ringenbach featuring the clothing styles for both men and women. I especially noted the wearing of hats by both sexes, which accounts for the greater headroom in the cars. Dave has suggested that each of us consider submitting an article for the newsletter with a brief history of your Model A. You might refer to the article by Dave in this newsletter on his car for what you might include in your article as to content and length. In addition, be sure to read Dan's article regarding upcoming tours and be sure to let him know that you're interested in arranging a breakfast for the club. Next meeting, we will discuss this year's budget proposal. In the meantime, happy honking, Bob I m planning to use this column to feature club members and their stories about their cars and how they came to appreciate Model A s. I will add a short questionnaire in the next newsletter to gain information for future columns. VICE PRESIDENT BY DAVE RINGENBACH I ll start by sharing my own story about my Model A, which is a 1930 Deluxe Coupe. My grandfather got the car in 1963 in lieu of a $55 rent payment from one of his tenants. My mom knew my dad wanted the car, so as a surprise, she gave it to my dad on his birthday, with the understanding that Pappy Ernie would get his $55.00 back if Dad ever sold the car. Some of my favorite memories from childhood are riding in the rumble seat with my two sisters to go for ice cream on summer Sunday afternoons. The Model A was a big hit with the kids in our Little League baseball team. Dad brought the car to Vegas in 1985 and we began restoring the car with help of many club members. Now our kids have their own memories about riding in the rumble seat and before too long our grandchildren will be going for ice cream with us. SUNSHINE BY CHARLOTTE KESSLER The Sunshine report is a happy one, as I have no illnesses to report. 4 MEETING MINUTES BY LIZ PREHM Our February meeting was called to order by our President at 7:30 pm. Our Vice-President led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. There were 38 members present and one member (Jerry) braved the cold and drove his car. Frank brought guests Dave & Margit from Washington state. Welcome all! Mark made a motion to accept the January minutes and was seconded by Kat. President Bob announced the February birthdays and we wish you all a very happy birthday! Vice President Dave wants to change up his column in the news letter with personal stories of members and how they acquired their Model A s. Great idea, can t wait to read them! Treasurer Judy said funds are good. She would like all members to know the cost of joining MAFCA is $50.00 per family. For new members this fee is waved for the first year. Also, the club has a few magnetic car signs at $30.00 each. If you know of anyone who would like to advertise in our newsletter please let her know. Auction items are always welcome to help boost the club funds. Workshop Tony handed his workshop over to Chris and her presentation of 20 s & 30 s fashions. She had so many wonderful ideas for both men and women. Please read her article in the newsletter! Tour director Dan shared the Boulder City tour with the club. Please read his article on the tour for more information. Kat reminded the club about the Chloride trip in March. She has added an update in the newsletter. Sunshine Charlotte had a short and sweet report this month, that is to say everyone is healthy! New business was the club budget for Copies were available for members review and will be voted on at the next meeting. Our lucky dark horse winner was Rob Waroway! Motion was made by Kat and seconded by Tony to close the meeting at 8:26pm. Thanks for joining us and hope to see you at our next event or meeting! Thanks to Ray, Kat, Dan, Jan and Chris for newsletter photos! FASHIONS OF THE 1930 s By: Chris Ringenbach We first took a look at the fashions of the previous decade. When we think of the 20 s, an image of a Flapper comes to mind, a young independent woman experimenting with her newfound freedoms. Corsets and elaborate layers of clothing were discarded in favor of the garconne masculine look of short bobbed hair, flat bound chests and a low, loose waistline. They wore bright colors and used beads, boas and scarves for accessories, often carrying long cigarette holders. And then came the Depression. While the long tubular silhouette of the 20 s carried over into the 30 s, there was a greater emphasis on femininity. Waistlines gradually returned to their normal position and accentuated a women s natural curves. Details designed to carry the eye to a woman s face, included pretty collars, button detailing and fluffy sleeves. Many dresses were adorned with great big bows at the shoulder and neckline areas. As the stock market dropped, so did hemlines to just above the ankle. Skirts were fitted at the hips and then flared slightly at the hem with pleats and topstitched seamed detailing for visual interest. Skirts often featured fitted hip yokes of varying shapes and topstitched for emphasis. Blouses which required less fabric and could be mixed and matched with one skirt came into popularity. 4 Continued on next page

5 1930 s tea dresses were frequently made from rayon, a synthetic, affordable version of silk. No well-dressed woman left home without a hat. The cloche hat, a holdover from the 20 s was still popular. The Eugenie style hat, worn at an angle on the head and adorned with ribbons, bows or feathers came into favor along with hats designed by Elsa Schiaparelli. Even during the Depression when money was tight, people went to the movies a lot. So it s no surprise that the movie industry had a big influence on the fashion of the time. The ready-made clothing industry widely copied the famous dress worn by Joan Crawford in Letty Lynton. Marlene Dietrich shocked the world by wearing pants to a movie opening and women were inspired by Katherine Hepburn to start wearing pants, at least for a casual, sporty daytime look. Pants of the 30 s were loose fitting with a high waist and fit like a skirt with a low crotch. Men s fashions also underwent a change from previous decades. Men s suit jackets sported a more fitted look, with higher waistlines, broad shoulders and shorter, wider lapels for a socalled Superman look. The double-breasted suit seen here is a classic and carries down through the decades even into today s styling. Men s pants were loose fitting with a high waist and cuffed hems. No well-dressed man left home without garters to hold up his socks and a kerchief in his breast pocket. And of course, a hat such as the fedora or the Homburg. Photo s During Presentation Thank you Hal for providing the screen! Thank you Dave for taking the part of the projectionist! 5

6 Boulder City Tour February began very well with a 9 car tour to Boulder City, via Lake Mead scenic drive. We started out with 22 people having breakfast at the Omelette House in Henderson. After breakfast we caravanned in our Model A s to a couple of Lake Mead overlooks. Took a while to find one with water in the background! We stopped at the Lake Mead Visitors Center for an interesting movie (no popcorn!!) and a lot of interesting information about the area. Ray and Pam White then led us into Old Town Boulder City for a great walking tour of some of the cities historic sites and original buildings. Ray did a great job researching the history of the area and shared his knowledge with us along the tour. It was a fun and interesting day and the weather was just perfect! We all broke up after that and headed home. Liz and I stopped at A&W and had an old fashion root beer float! Thank you, Ray, for a great day! Alabam is on the left. Around his neck is a string of toilet paper! Our tour guide telling stories of the men who worked on the Dam! (right) The Mac McComb Golden Piston Award was presented to Tony Gardner at the January kickoff breakfast. I forgot to put his picture in the newsletter. He has done a great job helping our members! Thanks Tony! Congratulations Tony! St. Patrick s Day Update Hello Everyone, Due to a cancellation we have one room available at Shep Miner's Inn for the St. Patrick's weekend and parade in Chloride, AZ. Rooms are $50 a night and must be paid for in cash. They don't take credit cards. We will be staying two nights. So get to the ATM before heading to AZ. For those going we will meet at 8:30am on the 16th of March at the Golf Course in Boulder City for breakfast before going on to Chloride. (Here you can use CC) The parade is on the 17th of March at noon. Thought it would be fun if we wore period clothes for the parade. We will have a party that night in Yesterday's (they have a new chef who is getting rave reviews) We will be coming back to Las Vegas after breakfast on the 18th. Please contact Kat McMahon or Mike Kessler , if you would like to join us. 6
