The Class of 1967 has always been one of our strongest supporters and they have now created a boat fund to keep a Class of 1967 Memorial shell in the boathouse forever. It s an amazing gift and we thank them for their generosity and commitment to Navy Crew. This boat christening will kick off the Class of 1967 s 50th Reunion weekend here at the Naval Academy. During their tenure as oarsmen at Navy, they were part of the 1965 Clean Sweep of the IRA Championships, where the Varsity, Junior Varsity and Plebe crews all won the National Championship. In their graduating year, the Junior Varsity crew won another IRA Championship. After graduation, many went off to fight the War in Vietnam and represented our country with distinction. Their legacy keep vibrant one of the greatest eras in the history of Navy Crew. The Navy Crew coaches, athletes and alumni are excited to welcome the Class of 1967 back to Hubbard Hall to dedicate their new racing shell on October 20th at 10 AM. Go Navy Crew Treubert Earns Silver at U23s From Navysports.com - Over the weekend, rising senior Austin Treubert and his United States lightweight men s four crew raced its way onto the podium with a second-place finish at the 2017 World Rowing U-23 Championships. Taking on an international field in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, Treubert s team was one of five American crews to medal at the event and one of two to tally a silver medal. Racing with a four-man crew of Holy Cross Vincent LaMonte, Wisconsin s Kyle James and Marietta College s Jack Gleim, the United States lightweight men s four clocked in with a time of 6:07.89 to come in behind Italy, but hold off a very game Story cont d on Page 7... Annual Alumni Event a Success The 2017 Alumni Banquet proved to be another success, with over 200 alumni and alumnae toasting the start of the spring season and the achievements of the soonto-be commissioned Firsties of This year, however, the Banquet and the address by special guest VADM Robert Harward 79, capped off a full day of Alumni activities on the Yard and at Hubbard. The day started as any fair-weather Saturday should, with the crews rising early to tackle some hard strokes on the Severn, and many alums stopped by to greet the crews as they returned home. The morning s work continued over on the Halsey turf, where VADM Harward had offered to work out with the teams. The Admiral s workout was a two-hour frogman extravaganza for the upper body, featuring over 400 push-ups and liberal use of the Halsey pull-up bars. The Mids, fresh from 9-10 good Severn miles that morning, attacked the workout with gusto, as did LWT Coach Shawn Bagnall and several alums. ENS Jack Ogden 16, still attached as TAD with the team, got right into it with the Mids, while 2nd Lt s Evan Kolodziejczak 15, Nick Connelly 15, and A. J. Karras 16 represented the N150 VADM Robert Harward 79, USN ret. ranks, with the latter using the workout as a final tune-up before reporting to 29 Palms. To those who had seen the Admiral run this workout with Navy Crew on previous visits, it was no surprise that the Admiral was the strong man of the morning, and he impressed every Mid who got DOWWWWWN with his energy and enthusiasm...and his push-up technique. 2 Navy Lightweight 4+Wins IRA Championship Spring 2017 was a successful and positive season for the N150 Program both on the race course and in the classroom. When looking back this summer, the team knows that another strong layer has been added to the foundation that will allow the team to achieve both its long term and immediate team goals. Following a strong indoor winter training season where the team welcomed the challenges and training put forward by the coaching staff, the Navy Lights once again saw strong acrossthe-board personal records on the ergometers and welcomed the Class of 2020 to the world of collegiate rowing. That spring rowing induction for the entire team began after reform in January and saw six eights of athletes put in tremendous effort and mileage in Oak Ridge in March, thus officially kicking-off the spring racing season. With the support of the families and hosts of Hubbard Hall South in Tennessee, the Midshipmen were able to ready themselves for the always challenging cup racing season that was jump-started with an intense set of scrimmaging at the end of Spring Break against UVA, Bucknell, and Hobart College in Charlottesville. Following the scrimmaging, the team knew it was faster than the previous year but would have to test itself against one of the deepest teams in the league, Princeton, on their Navy Lightweight 4+ with Coach Sands and IRA Championship Trophy home course. Kicking off the season, the young 1st Varsity 8+ for the Navy Lights was able to defeat Princeton to win the Murtaugh Cup for the first time since 2008 with an aggressive start and gutsy middle thousand. The team had close results across all 5 boats, and also defeated Princeton in the 5th Varsity 8+. Yale loomed the following week and the 1st Varsity was unable to sustain the speed needed to stay in contact with the defending EARC champions. However, the following two weeks would prove to be two of the best in recent memory, with clean sweeps of both defending IRA champions Columbia (WIT Cup) and Mid-Atlantic rivals Georgetown (Forster Cup). The team also dedicated its newest hull for former Navy Lightweight coach Robert Kasper ( ) at home following the Columbia race, which was an awesome way to conclude a great day on the Severn. The next two weeks proved to be challenging for the Lights, but the challenge revealed that when one eight of men stumbles, the depth and character of the entire program lifts the team. The 1st Varsity 8+ dropped close races to both Harvard in Boston, and Penn on the Severn, but the team brought home both overall points Story cont d on Page 8... Navy Crew Newsletter Page 2

3 Navy Women s Crew Patriot League Champions With a challenging spring race schedule on the horizon, the women s team came out of winter training with the purpose of developing the speed of this very young team. The team once again traveled to High Point, NC for their spring training trip. There they battled the conditions and wet-launched in temperatures that teetered around the freezing mark. As a reward for the efforts of the week, the Mids got to lineup and scrimmage the Women from Army. The Mids displayed their dominance, sweeping all of the races. The women then officially started their spring schedule by heading to Philadelphia for the Murphy Cup. Against a field growing in strength, the Mids had a good showing. In the Varsity 8, Navy finished 3rd in the grand final to NCAA Championship regular Northeastern and resurgent Penn. In the 2nd Varsity 8 event, Navy had two entries. Both Navy A and Navy B pushed into the grand final, with Navy B beating out strong A boats in their heat. Navy A finished second to Penn and Navy B rounded out the final finishing in 6th overall. In the varsity 4 and 2nd varsity 4, Navy fought through some close racing with Penn, but could not overtake them placing second in both races. The next weekend, Navy entered a 10 team field in the Doc Hosea Invitational that included Syracuse, Northeastern, Navy Women with the Patriot League Trophy in Camden, NJ Penn, Dartmouth, Minnesota, Rhode Island, Boston U, Rutgers and UMass. All three varsity 4 s and the 3rd Varsity 8 did exceptionally well, helping to show the depth that the team is developing. The Varsity 4 and 3rd Varsity 4 claimed grand final wins. The 2nd four finished 4th, but put together two solid races. The 3rd Varsity 8 put in a powerful second place performance against a historically strong Syracuse 3V8. The V8 and 2V8 showed some good moments of racing but struggled to handle the conditions. The 2V8 dealt with collisions and managed to finish second in the petite final (8th overall) while the V8 tried to close the margins on Northeastern and Penn but could not finishing 5th overall. On the day, Navy finished 4th as a team behind Syracuse, Northeastern and Penn. Week three of the season was met with 12 week exams and a short turnaround for the team which sent one group to D.C. for the GW Invitational as the lower boats traveled to Philadelphia to race Drexel. With blazing tailwind & tail current conditions, the Mids were tested in D.C. The V4 won its lone race handily, scorching all varsity 4 times for the day. The 3v8 also won its lone race handily over St. Joes and Rhode Island. The 2V8 closed the gap on Rhode Island from the previous week from 20 seconds to 2 seconds to finish second in race 1. However, they could not find a rhythm for race 2, finishing behind Drexel. The Varsity 8 also struggled on the day. They managed to win their first race over Story cont d on Page 8... 4 Hwts: Young Team Earns Three Medals at Sprints During what most people thought would be a rebuilding year, the Navy Heavyweight Crew turned some heads by wining three medals at the Eastern Sprints and sweeping the Goes Trophy races for the first time in 20 years. Traveling to Ithaca for their annual Cornell/Syracuse race, Navy was the clear underdog for the first time in many years. But after winning the first four races of the day (5V, 4V, 3V, and 2V) on the Cayuga Inlet, the Navy 1V had the confidence to finish Navy Heavyweight 4th Varsity won Silver Medal in the Carl Ullrich the sweep and break the course record by 0.9 seconds, which was previously held by Harvard from Each of the races up at Cornell were won in similar fashion: Navy got out to a strong lead, held a steady base for the first 1000 meters and then attacked the first turn and pushed the rating in the second half of the race. It was a great Navy Day! said Head Coach Rob Friedrich. A lot of credit has to go to our coxswains. They steered the course well and executed our race plan perfectly. We were very proud of all our boats. It was a great team effort. By sweeping the event, Navy took home both the Goes Trophy and Stagg Cup for team points (photo pictured on page 7). While the 1V and 2V had an inconsistent season, the 5th Varsity was undefeated and the 4th Varsity had only two losses against Princeton and Harvard. We had a young team this year, explained Coach Friedrich. While the inexperience showed in our Varsity at times, the depth and competition between the 2V through 6V were very exciting to watch develop. Each week our younger athletes were getting faster and creating the depth of our future speed. Many oarsmen from the undefeated 5V earned their way into the 4V for the Eastern Sprints and they did not disappoint. In the 4V Grand Final, Navy was in a fourboat fight for the lead in the first 1000 meters. After hitting a patch of rough water, Navy dropped to fourth, but then made a huge push to pass Princeton and BU in the third 500. In the last 300 meters, Navy was closing on the leader, Harvard, but ran out of room. After being ranked fifth coming into the regatta, Navy took home a welldeserved silver medal. In the 5th Varsity Grand Final, Navy could not keep their unbeaten streak alive, finishing second in a close race with Wisconsin after leading much of the way. Navy s 6th Varsity, also entered in the 5V event, raced above all expectations, finishing ahead of Harvard, Princeton and Brown to win the bronze medal in the same event. Story cont d on Page 7... 5 Lightweights: Robert Kasper Shell Dedication On a beautiful, albeit windy day in March, the United States Naval Academy Lightweight Crew was pleased to dedicate its newest shell in honor of a truly inspirational Navy coach, Coach Robert J. Kasper Jr. As luck would have it, Coach Kasper was able to be joined by his entire family on the water for the WIT Cup racing against Columbia. They were able to witness the first official race of the Robert J. Kasper as the Navy athletes pressed away from the defending national champions, Columbia University, for the first cup win against Columbia since Delivering the congratulations from the Naval Academy Athletic Association was Senior Associate Athletic Director Dave Davis, who marveled at the influence that Coach Kasper had as a coach to have mentored two future Admirals on the same team, VADM Terry Benedict and current Chief of Naval Operations, ADM John Richardson. Before the traditional christening of the shell and pictures with family and friends, VADM Benedict spoke to the entire Lightweight Team and those who were gathered on the Hubbard Hall apron about the influence that Coach Kasper had on him as both a Naval Officer and as a man. Reading a passage from Boys in the Boat, VADM Benedict addressed the crowd before Coach Kasper took the podium to humbly accept the honor of the dedication, and implore the current Navy Lightweights to attack every practice and race in the shell. A final reminder was given by Coach Kasper to the young Midshipmen that he used to give his own daughters when they were young competitors: Show no mercy to your opponents! Navy Crew Commemorative Locker Program The Hubbard Hall commemorative locker program is off to a great start, with 21 lockers already purchased ($52,500) and several more pending, according to Rusty Yeiser 74 from the USNA Foundation. Dirk Mosis 73, had the honor of purchasing the first locker (pictured on the right) and his locker plate is now installed in the men s locker room on locker #73 for his class year. Plebe Rower Andrew Knoll 20 was the proud athlete housed in the Dirk Mosis Locker for the season. For those just learning about the program, here is the information provided in the last newsletter: Given the rich history of Navy Crew that Hubbard Hall represents, it is fitting to provide an opportunity for former Navy rowers and other alumni, family, and friends of Navy Crew to both honor past glory and provide for the success of future midshipman crews. The Navy Crew Excellence Fund provides critical private support for capital and supplemental program support for all three Navy crew programs: heavyweights, lightweights, and women. With a $2,500 charitable contribution, you may customize a tribute to the people, history, and traditions that will continue to inspire midshipmen who pull an oar for Navy. Your personalized plate will be affixed to the front of a locker in the men s or women s locker room on the second deck of the boathouse where it will remind future Navy rowers of the legacy of excellence they have inherited. This 2017 Alumni Day also featured the inaugural Plebe 500 Meter Challenge. As many of you know, the Plebes of Hubbard Hall are 500 meter enthusiasts, who start perfecting the art of the all-out 50 stroke sprint when they first come to the Boathouse during Plebe Summer. This year, the combination of Plebe Power in the Class of 2020 and the wide-open, ice-free creek, allowed the Plebes to issue a challenge to the alums: Join the 20s for a Creek-shot (or two) and see if you still have what it takes to Pull for Navy. Answering the call were the HWTs of 2004 Era (the last HWTs to take a Sprints medal in the 1V), the LWTs from the 2007 era, the young HWTs from the Classes of 12-16, and the veteran crew of 80-82, stroked by Navy Olympian (and IRA Champ) Dan Lyons 80, with team Faculty Rep Robert Niewoehner 81 in the bow. The racing was intense, and the showmanship started with the HWTs showing up early to practice their race starts on the slider ergs on the 2nd Deck. Out on the water, the N150s and Women s team put out a crew each, while the 20 HWTs fielded a 1F and a 2F. What ensued proved to all that you never really forget how to pull hard for 500 meters in the back creek, so the Plebes had their hands full. Most of the racing was round-robin, but what shaped up to be the fastest matchup of the day, after the HWT Plebes narrowly defeated the alums, was the showdown between the HWTs, with 4 alumni from that 2004 Varsity, and the HWT 1F. The Plebes made the rookie mistake of settling after strokes, which gave the 04s the edge they needed to show the young bulls how it is done. The Plebe 500 Meter Challenge proved to be a huge success, giving both the alums a chance to get on the water and the Plebes a chance to spend some time racing the kind of 1F line-up that is no longer featured on the race schedule anymore. Plan Navy Women: Midn and Alumnae with Patriot League Trophy on seeing the Challenge return next year, and you better start training soon--the 2021 s are already hard at work! After all the excitement on the Yard, it was time to eat and enjoy the company of the over 200 alums from across the spectrum of Navy crew history. Classes from 1960 to 2016 were represented, with junior officers, senior officers, and the occasional flag officer rubbing elbows at the bar--and 3rd and 4th boaters sitting side by side with Olympians and IRA Champions. VADM Harward spoke from his experience, both as a Navy LWT oarsman and graduate of Hubbard Hall, as well as from his time in the Special Warfare community. Perhaps his most poignant message was especially for the 2017 Firsties, as he spoke about the importance of knowing and respecting the lives of the sailors and marines they would soon be leading. The Alumni Banquet will return next year, so start contacting your classmates and filling your table. It is always a special evening, and a chance to relive and remember what it means to Pull for Navy. 7 Treubert Story cont d... Indonesian team. France and Germany rounded out the field in the gold medal final. I had a great experience, remarked Treubert. Being able to represent the USA on that level of competition is an honor. We brought together a small camp of lightweight towers in New Jersey and the Princeton National Rowing Association and did some seat racing to ultimately end up with the lineup we took to Worlds. I was the two-seat so I was in charge of giving commands and updates throughout the race and telling the crew when to makes moves. In the championship final, the Italians were at the front of the pack for the majority of the race as the American boat sat in fifth place at the halfway, 1000-meter mark. After overtaking France and Germany over the next 500-meters, Treubert and his teammates set their sights on Indonesia down the stretch. Down 1.66 seconds with 500 meters to go, the Americans closed out the race with split of 1:31.60 well surpassing the 1:34.78 set down by Indonesia. The final times for the medalists were a 6: for Team Italy, 6: for Team USA and a 6: for Team Indonesia. It s outstanding for Austin to have earned a spot on the 2017 United States U23 Rowing Team this summer and we could not be more proud of his hard work and dedication, remarked Navy lightweight head coach Shawn Bagnall. All and all we were very pleased with the outcome. While ideally we wanted Heavyweight Recap cont d... This year, Navy traveled back to the West Coast for the IRA Championships in Sacramento, CA. It was a weekend of near misses, said Coach Friedrich. Our Varsity just missed upsetting Dartmouth to win the Rep on the first day, while our Varsity 4 almost fought their way into a deep grand final. Each boat raced their fastest 2k of the season here, and with the exception of our 3V, it was just not quite enough to reach our goals. The 3rd Varsity was the story of the regatta for Navy s Heavyweights. With many oarsman from the silver-medal 4V on board, Navy s 3V shocked the spectators by going right with Washington in the heat on the first day of racing. Navy and Washington pulled away from the field for the two spots that qualified directly to the semifinals. In the Semis, Navy went toe-to-toe with Harvard and Yale all the way down the course, finishing in the third qualifying position for the grand final, over five seconds ahead of Northeastern, Dartmouth and Cornell. In the grand final, Navy had a great start and found themselves ahead of Princeton and holding right with Yale and California at the half-way mark. Unfortunately, a strong Princeton crew managed to nip the Mids at the line, where Navy finished in 6th place. We are very proud of our 3rd Varsity and how they competed against the top crews in the nation, said Friedrich. Even in this race, many of the other boats are full of foreigners, so to have our boat of Plebes and Youngsters fight right with them down the course bodes well for the future of our squad. first place, it was amazing to earn the USA its first medal in the Lightweight Four since 2010, which was actually the last time a Navy rower, Ed Mix King, was in the boat during his time at USNA. Treubert will return to Annapolis to begin his senior year in August. A threeyear member of the Mids lightweight varsity eight crew, he will look to continue the growth of the program that saw the varsity eight collect cup victories over Columbia, Princeton and Georgetown this past spring. I couldn t be more thankful to the Naval Academy and the long list of staff and personnel that supported me and helped make this happen. I look forward to bringing back and sharing this experience with my teammates back in Hubbard Hall. Even though the Varsity and 2V did not make the top ten at the IRA, the 1V had a great semi-final row to beat Stanford and a very strong George Washington crew. Navy s 2V reached their top speed on the last day of the regatta, where they sprinted through Stanford, Columbia and then Syracuse to finish right behind Wisconsin in the third level final. In keeping with their academic tradition, Navy s Heavyweights placed 10 athletes on the IRA All-Academic Team. Team Captain Scott Gibson led the way for his third selection, joined by graduates Julia Foust and Michael Pentaleri; rising seniors Jack Gainer, Chuck Linder, Caleb Robertson, Zach Scholz, Nick Street, Eli Wood; and rising junior Michael Palaski. 8 Women s Recap cont d... GW and Rhode Island but got caught in bad water to finish 3rd behind a Drexel and Georgetown team that they handily beat two weeks prior. Meanwhile the Navy eights that traveled to Philadelphia beat up on Drexel s lower boats. Tremendous open water wins were a great cap on the day. The Mids finally had two weeks to reset and train before heading down to a loaded 22-team Clemson Invitational which featured the then # 4, 5, 10, 11, 14, 15, 18, 20, 21, 22 & 24 ranked teams in the country. The 2V4 was able to put solid races together. They were able to finish up second in their C final (15th overall). The V4 got faster throughout the weekend but just missed out on a second place finish in the C final, finishing third to Central Florida by 2 tenths of a second (17th overall.) The 2nd 8 had some great moments but suffered from an interference call during the Saturday afternoon race, placing them in the C Final. There the 2V finished third (17th overall,) closing the gap on Penn to 1.3 seconds. The Varsity 8 also had some great moments (including finishing 1 second off of 18th ranked Louisville.) The V8 eventually finished second in the C Final (17th overall,) 3.5 seconds behind Gonzaga. With three hard races through the weekend, Navy was able to learn and grow tremendously with exposure to this speed and finished 17th as a team. The women s team wrapped up their regular season in Philadelphia racing against Temple and Delaware. Navy swept all 12 races in their final tune-up before the Patriot League Championships. Then, following Final Exams, the Midshipmen traveled up to Camden, NJ for the 2017 Patriot League Championship. Easily qualifying all three boats for the grand finals, Navy was looking to three-peat. The Varsity 4 and 2nd Varsity 8 had absolutely dominating performances in the finals. The Varsity 4 had a 14 second win over the field while the 2nd Eight powered to a 15.3 second win. Once they had the lead, neither crew relented. The Varsity 8 lined up against a Boston U. 8 that had 4 seniors and 3 juniors. A young Navy boat could not withstand the seasoned BU 8 and finished second, 2.7 seconds back. The team effort won Navy their 3rd straight Patriot League Title and 5th title overall. With their 4th bid to the NCAA Championship secured, the Mids got even younger as the 1/C were commissioned during the same weekend and the team needed to fill some major holes. The Spring schedule had allotted an opportunity for the Mids to see 11 out of the 22 team field prior to the championship but NCAA racing hits a whole other level. With 9 freshmen and 8 sophomores amongst the 25 women representing Navy, the group had some work to do. The 4 got faster throughout the week and was able to win the D final (19th overall.) The 2nd 8 was aggressive throughout but didn t have the power to match the other crews finishing second in the D Final (20th overall). The Varsity 8 was competitive throughout but again, didn t have the power to match the other crews finishing third in the D Final (21st overall). This young team finished 20th overall, matching the second best team finish ever. With the experience that this young women s team is garnering, the expectations will be higher and the future looks bright. Lightweight Recap cont d... trophies (Navy/Harvard Team Points Trophy and 1919 Cup) for the total number of wins over those two opponents. Following the cup season, the team remained laser-focused through spring academic finals in preparation for a strong showing at the Eastern Sprints in Worcester. As anyone who has raced at the Eastern Sprints knows, it is a special thing to medal at The Sprints, and an even more rewarding experience to win their event. For 4 of the 6 Navy Lightweight 8+ s that traveled to Lake Quinsigamond, the dedication and hard work paid-off with trips to the medals dock. The Navy Lights raced to gold in the 4th Varsity, 5th Varsity, and 6th Varsity races (The 6th Varsity raced in the 5th Varsity race and almost finished 1-2 behind their 5V counterparts), as well as earning a silver-medal in the 2nd Varsity 8+ event. The team was able to build upon the strong results at Sprints, and had a very competitive and productive IRA Camp at the end of May. In Sacramento at the IRA Regatta, the 1st Varsity 8+ ran into an extremely competitive heat, and ended up finishing the regatta 7th overall.
