The weather was perfect so many cars we have not seen before, or not seen in many years, came out for at least part of the day. Our DJ, Joe Merryfield, kept the atmosphere lively playing vinkids Choice tage and modern tunes, many with an general automotive or, Cadillac specific theme. The variety and quality of cars this year was remarkable. Eldorados were represented though most eras starting at the beginning of 1953 all the way to the end of 2002, this included a very nice '57 Brougham. The LaSalles came in the form of a Series Coupe (Chuck Bonell); Series Coupe (Nick Mastandrea); Series Conv. (Mike Pompeo); and later in the day Don and Goldie Silverman's Series Sedan. Many thanks go out to Brotherton Cadillac for sponsoring our awards. My family (Devree, Linnane & Andrew, Robert) for getting up at 0 dark 30 and setting up the tents and tables. Jerry Leighton for handling the awards and t-shirt procurement. And, Jose and the Triple X crew along with the WA State Hot Rod Hall of Fame group for their efforts to make these shows a success. 2

Host of 'My Classic Car' to shoot episode in Seattle this week Share story By Gene Stout Special to Autos Dennis Gage, the mustachioed host of My Classic Car, is just as engaging on the phone as he is on his popular, longrunning TV series, now in its 21st season. I ve been on TV longer than Gunsmoke, Gage says with a chuckle from his office in Evansville, Ind. Greenwood Car Show The state s largest one-day car show will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday along Greenwood Avenue North from North 67th to North 90th streets. For more details, visit greenwoodcarshow.com. Gage returns to the Northwest June 25 to film an episode at Seattle s sprawling Greenwood Car Show, which boasts more than 800 cars along Greenwood Avenue North. The affable TV host, who says he s always looking for an excuse to come back to the Northwest, has done segments on the annual Snohomish Classic Car & Hot Rod Display and the Triple XXX Root Beer Drive-In in Issaquah. Through the show s website, viewers have encouraged Gage and co-producer Ben Woehler to tape a segment at the Greenwood show. I had never done a show in Seattle proper, he says. And when I reached out to (organizers), I found they were very interested in having us. Gage and Woehler have shot episodes in all 50 states, eight Canadian provinces and five European countries. 6

Gage and Woehler have shot episodes in all 50 states, eight Canadian provinces and five European countries. My Classic Car is almost as much a travel show as it is a car show, Gage says. It s a travel show in the context of the car hobby. So we try to go to a great location a place that in and of itself is a destination. Gage talks to so many people in a weekend of taping that he compares the experience to an assembly-line focus group. We get people who didn t think they were interested in cars to be interested in cars, he says. I try to make this show broadly appealing, and again that s the travel show part. We try to make it fun for everybody, whether they re hardcore car people or not. Though Gage is excited about the Greenwood show, he admits the sheer size of the event could be daunting. This thing is such a crush, Gage says. It s going to be a challenge to do the kind of stuff we do, which is to find certain cars as well as capture the gestalt of the whole event. It s tough to shoot those special cars because of the mass of humanity. Gage says he always looks for the unusual. I ve done this so long that I ve kind of been Cuda/Camaro/Mustanged to death, he says. And while I appreciate those cars and I ve owned them all I m looking for the stuff you don t see at every show. And it s always there. There are always three to five cars where you say, Damn, I didn t know that existed. Or I haven t seen one of those for a long time. That s what I go after. Organizers are promoting Gage s appearance on the show s web page. That really drives attendance, he says. It s never a small show, but it could be an even bigger show this year. Gage and Woehler expect to be very busy. The pace of their work may explain why Gage seems a bit hyper on the show. We ve been on the road together for like 12 years. And it takes every minute, every second that exists, to get enough footage to put together the show, he says. In the field, it s about an hour per finished minute (of the show). So we ll be slammin and jammin the whole time. Gage describes himself as an excitable boy. I m a naturally fascinated person. I ve often said I could find something interesting in every car I see. I m still looking for it in the Yugo, but it s got to be there. 7

I m a naturally fascinated person. I ve often said I could find something interesting in every car I see. I m still looking for it in the Yugo, but it s got to be there. Gage was 15 and living on the family farm when he bought his first car, a 1959 Ford Thunderbird, for $100. It was dusk, and the car looked white. The next morning he discovered the car was actually light pink. They had this color called Flamingo, he says with a chuckle. It was this really, really light pink. But it looked white at dusk. So there I was, this Illinois farm boy driving a pink Thunderbird. It wasn t pink for long. Today, he owns nine cars (from a 1956 Lincoln Premiere to a late-model Mercedes CLS) and eight motorcycles (most of them BMWs). I used to have a lot more, but I really had just too much stuff, he says. The worst thing you can do is let these things sit. They go to hell just sitting. So I ve tried to get it down to a more manageable number. With a mustache nearly as wide as the handlebars on the Honda 50 motorcycle he rode as a teenager, Gage has had a surprisingly varied career, working as a musician, chemist and TV host. After studying chemistry and physics in college, Gage began playing pedal steel guitar and working in local bands. He later opened for Charlie Daniels, Waylon Jennings and Dr. Hook before deciding to hang it up in order to attend the University of Idaho, where he received a PhD in chemistry. This led to a position as a product development scientist at Proctor & Gamble where he helped develop products including Pringles potato chips. Later, at Bristol-Myers-Squibb, he led the development of Boost, the nutritional energy drink. But the old-car bug kept biting. In 1995, he produced a pilot for My Classic Car that became a series in Today, the show airs on Velocity, NBC Sports Network, MAVTV and Rev n TV, reaching 100 million households. Gage has also produced several motorcycle shows: Trippin on Two Wheels, Corbin s Ride On and Texas Hardtails. In 2010, Gage became sole owner of the TV production company that originally produced My Classic Car. He renamed the company Madstache Inc. 8

So, at what point did he start wearing a mustache? I was born with it, he quips. You should see the baby pictures. In truth, the mustache dates to his days as a traveling musician in the mid- 70s, when a full, ZZ Top-style beard was later reduced to a longhorn tache. Gage grew up in the muscle-car era and loves vintage cars. But there s plenty to like about today s automotive technology, from safety to fuel efficiency. Muscle cars went like a bat out of hell in a straight line, but couldn t stop, couldn t turn, he says. Today, technology gets you 1,000 horsepower out of a five-liter engine. Cars are way safer than they ever were. But I don t think there s much to get excited about today stylistically. That s why cars like the (Mercedes) CLS stand out to me. It s a really unique design. Gage is optimistic the hobby will survive, despite a generation of millennials who grew up with video games instead of toolboxes. Everybody worries the kids are just into technology and transportation that gets them from point A to point B, he says. I think that s true. But they re still going to have toys as they grow older and have disposable income. These cars are art forms. They will remain art forms. I think this hobby will increasingly grow cottage industries to maintain these pieces of rolling art for people who want the cool without the greasy fingernails. 10 NEWS FROM THE CHIEF JUDGE Penske s Unfair Advantage - CLC Judging 2017 by: William C. Bill Anderson, P.E. My brief foray in SCCA sports car racing in 1969 to 1972 coincided with the hey-day of the Trans-Am Series that saw all the major car manufacturers competing hammer and tong to be top dog and the unlimited cars of the Can-Am series. It was during this time period that the label unfair advantage was affixed to Roger Penske and the cars he fielded; developed and driven for the most part by Mark Donohue. In 1968, the Penske/Donohue combo won most every Trans-Am race with a Camaro. The team won the series championship again in 1972, this time with an AMC Javelin. In 1972, with unlimited Porsche money, their Porsche 917 devastated the Can-Am competition. If that was not enough, Penske/Donohue also won the 1972 Indy 500. All that success had many in each series complaining about Penske s unfair advantage. I had a chance to see the unfair advantage in person and up close. While Penske had access to resources, back then he was not the billionaire he is today, and many of his competitors spent more money. Penske s unfair advantage was really simple and available to all. It combined comprehensive research, thorough preparation, across the board professional appearance cars, personnel, and equipment, and attention-to-detail; all of which required hard work. What does Penske s Unfair Advantage have to do with CLC judging in 2017? Penske was a careful reader of the rules in every type of race in which he competed and kept up-to-date with the many changes as they occurred. There are many changes in CLC Judging Rules that will first apply at the 2017 Grand National in Washington. Highlights of these changes follow. There will be no Senior Division or Senior Classes in Cars that have received a Senior or higher award in prior events will be judged with the cars in the Primary Division using the Primary Division Classes. But, there will be Senior, Senior Wreath, and Senior Crown awards. The Primary Division remains for cars 20 years old or manufactured in 1999 and before. The Classes used in the Touring Division will be the same as the Primary Division Classes; the current Touring Divisions Classes have been abolished for Cars 10 years old and older (2007 in 2017) can be entered in competition for Touring Prizes. The Judging Form has been increased in the number of items scored. This will permit more accurate judging. One Judging Form will be used cars 1903 to 1966 and another for cars manufactured and assembled after The new forms have about 560 points compared with the 200-point form now in use. Although there are many more points, the scores used to award prizes will remain based on the current hundred point scale. Currently, the final score is determined by dividing the points deducted by 2 and subtracting that number from 100. With the new form, the final score will be divided by about 5.6 and subtracting that number from 100. The current score requirements for first, second and third place trophies in the Touring Division remain the same as existing. However, any car meeting the score requirements will be awarded the prize earned, even if multiple cars earn the same award. 10

The prizes and associated scores in the Primary Division are: Senior Crown 99 to 100 points; Senior Wreath 97 to points; Senior 95 to points; First Place 90 to points; Second Place 80 to points; Third Place 70 to points. A car achieving any of the Senior prizes can do so on its first showing. And, like the Touring Division, any car meeting the score requirements will be awarded the prize earned, even if multiple cars earn the same award. A new Division, Special & Unique Cars, has been created for cars like the 1953 Cadillac Elegante and other specialty cars. I will provide a complete list of the Classes and cars included in this Division later. The important point for this Division is that the car owner/entrant must supply a complete list and description of all the unique features of the car as part of the car s entry. The ownersupplied information will supplement that contained in CLC records. These features will be used when assessing authenticity of the car s components during judging. Modified cars will be judged. There are four classes: Hot Rod, Restomod, Mild Custom and Radical Custom. I will supply more details on the procedures used to enter, judge, and award prizes to such cars in a later column. There is no change to Preservation Division Rules. Cars may be entered in one of the other Divisions and the Preservation Division. All cars entered in a Grand National or other CLC judged event, either judged or display only must meet the four following rules * CLC Membership The car owner must be a current CLC member. * Confirmation of Entry This document, issued by the car registrar, must be presented at registration. * Proof of Insurance A currently valid insurance certificate or similar document establishing that the car to be shown is insured must be presented at registration. * Fire Extinguisher A UL approved fire extinguisher, at least 2.5 pound, must be placed alongside the left front wheel. This standardized position assures that it can be readily retrieved in an emergency. The Judging Committee is working to complete preparation of a new CLC Judging Manual. It is planned to have this document completed and published by the late fall of 2016 so that all potential entrants can have time to prepare for the 2017 GN and Fall Festival. If you have any questions about any of the new judging rules before the new Judging Manual is published, you 11
