Second Generation Stars Hope To Add To Family Legacy The latest generation from two of open-wheel racing s most familiar families comes to Belle Isle in hopes of adding to the family legacy. Marco Andretti the grandson of racing legend Mario Andretti and son of two-time Detroit winner Michael Andretti -- hopes to give his father s team its second win at Belle Isle. Another son hoping to return family name to Victory Lane is Graham Rahal. The son inaugural Belle Isle winner Bobby Rahal returns to the Service Central Chip Ganassi Racing Honda hoping to win the race s return to Belle Isle. Race Notes: The Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix will be the third IZOD IndyCar Series event conducted at The Raceway at Belle Isle Park. Previous Detroit winners entered include Dario Franchitti (1999), Helio Castroneves ( ), Tony Kanaan (2007) and Justin Wilson (2008). Thirteen drivers entered in the Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix competed in the last IndyCar Series event at the circuit in Five of those drivers led laps at the track (Helio Castroneves 79, Tony Kanaan 20, Scott Dixon 18, Oriol Servia 1 and Justin Wilson 15.) The Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix will be the fifth race on a road/street course in The first four races were won by Helio Castroneves (St. Pete) and Will Power (Barber, Long Beach and Sao Paulo). Team Penske has dominated the Firestone Fast Six qualifying, sweeping the pole position for each of the first four races. At least 12 drivers will compete in their first Indy car race at Belle Isle: Rubens Barrichello, Sebastien Bourdais, Mike Conway, Simona de Silvestro, JR Hildebrand, James Hinchcliffe, James Jakes, Charlie Kimball, Katherine Legge, Josef Newgarden Simon Pagenaud and Takuma Sato. 9 Season to Date: Dario Franchitti won the 96 th Indianapolis 500 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Will Power won back-to-back-to-back races at Barber Motorsports Park and the streets of Long Beach, Calif., and Sao Paulo, Brazil. Helio Castroneves won the season opening Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. Helio Castroneves, Will Power and Ryan Briscoe have won poles this season. Power won the pole at St. Petersburg and Sao Paulo, Castroneves won the pole at Barber and Briscoe won the pole at Long Beach and Indianapolis Three drivers (Rubens Barrichello, Katherine Legge and Josef Newgarden) started their first career IZOD IndyCar Series race at St. Petersburg. James Hinchcliffe has finished in the top-10 in each event. Drivers from six different teams are in the top-10 in points entering Indianapolis. There were seven race leaders and nine lead changes in the season opening race at St. Petersburg and in the third race of the season at Long Beach. There were also nine lead changes at Barber Motorsports Park. There were a season-best 10 race leaders and 34 lead changes at the Indianapolis 500. Milestones & Records: Should Dario Franchitti win the 2012 IZOD IndyCar Series championship, he will join Sebastien Bourdais as the only drivers to win four consecutive Indy car titles. Bourdais won four-straight Champ Car titles from Should Dario Franchitti win the 2012 IZOD IndyCar Series championship, he will join A.J. Foyt as the only drivers to win five Indy car titles in his career. Franchitti, who won the title in 2007 and again from Foyt won seven championships in his career. With his next victory, Dario Franchitti will pass Paul Tracy and Sebastien Bourdais for sole possession of seventh (7 th ) on the all-time wins list if neither Bourdais nor Tracy wins before he does.. The trio are tried with 31 wins. With a victory in 2012, Scott Dixon will extend his streak of consecutive seasons with a win to eight. 13 Road/street qualifying procedures divided into three segments Segment 1 All cars shall participate in one of the two groups for 15 minutes per group inclusive of fullcourse yellow conditions, with six cars posting best lap times from each group advancing to Segment 2. Cars not advancing to Segment 2 will fill positions 13 through the end of the starting field to be ranked in order of best lap time as follows: Group 1 shall occupy the odd-numbered positions beginning with 13 and Group 2 will occupy the even-numbered positions beginning with 14. Notes: Cars are assigned to Group 1 or 2. ars to one set of tires for each qualifying segment. Segment 2 Shall consist of one 10-minute, 12-car qualifying group inclusive of full-course yellow conditions, with all times from Segment 1 having been voided. Six cars posting best lap times advance to Segment 3 (the Firestone Fast Six). Cars not advancing to Segment 3 will fill positions 7-12 to be ranked in order of time. Segment 3 (Firestone Fast Six) Consists of one 10-minute, six-car qualifying group, of which five minutes is guaranteed green condition time, with all times from Segment 2 voided. Session shall begin 10 minutes after checkered flag of Segment 2. Firestone Fast Six shall determine the PEAK Pole Award winner and the cars starting 2-6 on the grid based on fastest lap time.

30 2012 IZOD IndyCar Series Race Recaps Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg Sunday, March 25 at Streets of St. Petersburg, Fla. Helio Castroneves ended a winless drought of more than a year by winning the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg for the third time on March 25. Castroneves, driving the No. 3 Shell V-Power/Pennzoil Ultra Team Penske Chevrolet, passed Target Chip Ganassi Racing's Scott Dixon for second place with a pass on the outside of Turn 1 on Lap 73 and went on to score the 26th win of his Indy car career. Dixon finished second in his Honda-powered car, followed by Ryan Hunter-Reay of Andretti Autosport in a Chevrolet-powered car. James Hinchcliffe and Ryan Briscoe rounded out the top-five. It was an emotional day for Castroneves, who dedicated his win to the late Dan Wheldon. After taking the checkered flag, Castroneves stopped his car at Turn 10 and honored Wheldon, who called St. Petersburg home, by climbing the fence and patting the "Dan Wheldon Way" sign located there. Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama Sunday, April 1 at Barber Motorsports Park Will Power held off Scott Dixon on a restart with 16 laps left to win the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama for the second year in a row. Dixon, who was seconds behind in the No. 9 Target Chip Ganassi Racing car, has the distinction of being the race runner-up all three years (twice to Power and in the inaugural race to Helio Castroneves). He broke a tie with teammate Dario Franchitti with 27 second-place finishes on the all-time list and is one behind Castroneves. Castroneves, the pole sitter, finished third to maintain the points lead in the young season and continue his resurgence after a disappointing 2011 season. He held off Graham Rahal in the No. 38 Service Chip Ganassi Racing car by of a second. Simon Pagenaud finished fifth and James Hinchcliffe was sixth after starting on the front row for the first time in his IZOD IndyCar Series career. Mike Conway, who provided A.J. Foyt Racing its best non-oval starting position (fourth) since 2007, finished seventh. Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach Sunday, April 15 at Streets of Long Beach, Calif. Will Power, who started the 38th Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach in Row 6 because of a penalty assessed on all 11 Chevrolet-powered cars for unapproved engine changes, overcame the deficit by stretching 18.5 gallons of E85 the last 21 laps on the mile, 11-turn street circuit, all the while being chased down by Simon Pagenaud. It was Team Penske's first Indy car victory at Long Beach since 2001 (Helio Castroneves), while Power won the Champ Car finale on the course in 2008 with KV Racing Technology. Pagenaud, who pitted the No. 77 Honda-powered car for the final time on Lap 70 of 85, finished of a second back. Over the final three laps, he ran lap times seconds quicker than Power (1: to 1: for instance on Lap 84). Pagenaud, who led laps for the first time since 2007 in Belgium, also gave Schmidt Hamilton HP Motorsports its highest finish since Jaques Lazier at Nashville in 2001 (as Sam Schmidt Motorsports). Seven different teams were represented in the top 10. James Hinchcliffe, driving the No. 27 GoDaddy.com car for Andretti Autosport, finished third as teammate Ryan Hunter-Reay incurred a 30-second penalty on the final lap for avoidable contact with the No. 15 Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing car. 31 Itaipava Sao Paulo Indy 300 presented by Nestle Sunday, April 29 at Streets of Sao Paulo, Brazil Will Power hopes a shower of April victories can lead to a quart of milk in May. The Team Penske driver won the Itaipava Sao Paulo Indy 300 presented by Nestle to score his third consecutive victory of the season and the third in a row at the Anhembi circuit. Power, driving the No. 12 Verizon Team Penske car, held off Hunter-Reay on a Lap 71 restart and won by of a second. Takuma Sato, who started 25th because of an unapproved Honda engine change and overcame a Lap 12 pit lane speed violation penalty, earned his first IZOD IndyCar Series podium finish. Power is the first driver since Scott Dixon in 2007 to win three consecutive races (Watkins Glen, Nashville, Mid-Ohio). Power inherited the point when Dixon pitted under caution on Lap 64, held off Hunter-Reay on the Lap 67 restart, which quickly turned into a Turn 1 parking lot that collected, among others, Dixon. Recognizing possibly his final opportunity to overtake Power, Hunter-Reay moved to the outside in Turn 1 of the Lap 71 green flag. Helio Castroneves overtook front-row starter Dario Franchitti on that restart to finish fourth. Franchitti's No. 10 Lexar Media car for Target Chip Ganassi Racing was bumped from behind on a Lap 26 restart in Turn 1 to drop to 22nd. Viso in ninth and Barrichello in 10th. 96 th Indianapolis 500 Mile Race Sunday, May 27, 2012 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway Reigning IZOD IndyCar Series champion Dario Franchitti became the 10th driver with three or more Indianapolis 500 wins, holding off charges from Target Chip Ganassi Racing teammate Scott Dixon, Takuma Sato and Tony Kanaan over the final five laps to win the 96 th Indianapolis 500. Franchitti won under caution as Sato's No. 15 Rahal Letterman Racing car made slight contact with the left side Franchitti's No. 50 Target Chip Ganassi Racing car while running side-by-side for the lead on the white flag lap. The contact shot Sato's car up the track and into the Turn 1 SAFER Barrier, bringing out the yellow flag. Franchitti led teammate Scott Dixon and Kanaan under the twin checkered flags to cap a wild race featuring the new car-engine package. There were a record 34 lead changes among 10 drivers. A few minutes later, in Victory Circle, Franchitti looked to the sky as a salute to Dan Wheldon. A few minutes afterward, he and wife Ashley Judd were joined on the victory lap by Susie Wheldon, who earlier in the weekend accepted the Champion of Champions ring and "Baby Borg" trophy on behalf of her husband. Kanaan, seeking his first victory in his 11th 500 Mile Race and driving the No. 11 car ("my favorite number") for KV Racing Technology, had taken the lead on a Lap 184 restart. Oriol Servia jumped from the 27th starting spot to finish fourth and pole sitter Ryan Briscoe was fifth. 93 Firestone Indy Lights To Debut New Car In 2014 Firestone Indy Lights announced May 25 its intentions to debut a new race car for the 2014 season. A request for proposal was distributed to potential manufacturers and development firms earlier this month for both engine and chassis, and series officials will begin reviewing and evaluating the submitted applications after the due date of June 30. "As we look to the future for Firestone Indy Lights, we believe it's important that we do everything we can to attract new drivers, teams, partners and manufacturers to our series to continue to improve our formal system of driver development," said Tony George Jr., director, Firestone Indy Lights. "The debut of the new car in 2014 will be a key step in this process while allowing our teams to operate as a true business through improved value proposition." The desired attributes of the 2014 Firestone Indy Lights car include: New chassis is to reflect current contemporary race car design with a forward-thinking, sophisticated and exciting formula. Chassis must be adaptable to compete on road, street and oval circuits with a minimum of facility-specific parts. New chassis to surpass all current FIA static and impact regulations while having the flexibility to accommodate a broad spectrum of drivers and seating positions. Improved aerodynamic performance that must also allow for enhanced sponsor placement opportunities on the car. Improved technological package to include but not limited to: paddle shifting, data systems and sensors. Potential to integrate an alternative fuel source. "With our premium on safety, our goal is to develop a car that is technology relevant to the new IZOD IndyCar Series car," said Vince Kremer, technical director, Firestone Indy Lights. "It is our intent to remain a spec series, as it creates the right platform to identify driver talent and contain costs. While it is important for us to gain a manufacturer badge for the engine and receive the endorsement of the auto industry, we want to make sure it is done in the right economic structure for our teams." The project will be under the supervision of INDYCAR vice president of technology Will Phillips and Kremer. Firestone Indy Lights is the official stepping stone to drivers and teams striving to reach the IZOD IndyCar Series and the Indianapolis 500, and is the third rung on the Mazda Road to Indy driver development ladder system. 106 2012 Firestone Indy Lights Race Recaps St. Petersburg 100 Saturday, March 24 at Streets of St. Petersburg, Fla. Tristan Vautier avoided on-track issues with other competitors, handled three restarts flawlessly and went on to a second victory over Sam Schmidt Motorsports teammate Esteban Guerrieri in the season-opening St. Petersburg 100. Vautier became the 10th driver to win his debut race in the series and the sixth who has won his debut at St. Petersburg (Marco Andretti, Raphael Matos, Junior Strous, J.K. Vernay and Josef Newgarden). Sebastian Saavedra moved up one position to claim third place in the No. 27 Team AFS car and Oliver Webb was fourth in his series debut in the No. 7 Lucas Oil Sam Schmidt Motorsports car. Victor Carbone was fifth. Grand Prix of Alabama Sunday, April 1 at Barber Motorsports Park Sebastian Saavedra outpaced the 15-car field in efficient manner in the 40-lap Grand Prix of Alabama. It was the fourth victory in the series for Saavedra, driving the No. 27 Team AFS car, and first this season. Tristan Vautier, driving the No. 77 Mazda Road to Indy/Sam Schmidt Motorsports car and the race winner at St. Pete, retained the series championship points lead by finishing second. Saavedra is eight points behind heading to the street course race at Long Beach on April 15. Esteban Guerrieri, who started fourth in the No. 11 Pistas Argentinas/Sam Schmidt Motorsports car, advanced to claim a podium finish. Grand Prix of Long Beach Sunday, April 15 at Streets of Long Beach Esteban Guerrieri overtook Sunoco Pole Award winner Sebastian Saavedra in Turn 1 of Lap 1 on the mile, 11-turn street circuit and went on to his first Firestone Indy Lights victory of the season by seconds. It was the fourth career victory (11th top-five finish in 17 races) for the 27-year-old Argentinian. Picking up two bonus points for leading the most laps, Guerrieri heads to the Freedom 100 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway three points behind Saavedra (130) in the championship standings. Tristan Vautier, the points leader entering the race, was credited with third place and has 128 points. Vautier joined the duo in Victory Circle because of a 30-second penalty assessed the No. 2 TMR- Tuvacol-Xtreme Coil Drilling car driven by Gustavo Yacaman for ignoring the instructions of Race Control. The car lost one of its mirrors with about 15 laps left in the 45-lap race, and the driver was called to pit lane to replace it (a rule). However, the team didn't have a replacement mirror and he continued. Firestone Freedom 100 Friday, May 25 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway Esteban Guerrieri overtook race leader Tristan Vautier and Gustavo Yacaman in Turn 1 on Lap 38 and went on to win the Firestone Freedom 100. A close final two laps were expected, but the No. 4 Belardi Auto Racing car driven by Jorge Goncalvez made moderate contact with the Turn 2 wall on the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Lap 39, bringing out the yellow flag. He was checked at the infield care center and cleared. Guerrieri, winning for the second time this season, pumped his fist as the No. 11 Pistas Argentinas/Sam Schmidt Motorsports with Curb-Agajanian car crossed under the checkered flag. It was the fourth consecutive year that a Sam Schmidt Motorsports driver won the race. Carlos Munoz, who got around Vautier and Yacaman before the caution finished second with Vautier settling for third place.
