The 2011 CWA National is history and was it ever an event for the history books! Truly national actually INTERnational! in scope, with dogs representing every active CWA region (ten states and one Canadian province), the meets and the match were a veritable showcase of the best and brightest dual purpose whippets competing today. I said in this space in the last issue that I wasn t going to attend, but at the very last minute I relented and bought a plane ticket. I just couldn t miss it and boy was I glad I went. It was a dream come true to be able to visit Arthur s Acres and I know I would have always regretted it if I hadn t made the trip. Thanks to everyone both on the scene and behind the scenes who contributed to making it such an incredible weekend. While this issue ran a bit late, I hope you ll understand when you take a peek inside. It is absolutely jam-packed with reports, critiques, photos and memories of the event. Thank you to everyone for so generously sharing this material. I know everyone who couldn t make it will almost feel like they were there, and those of us who were there, will enjoy reliving the good times as if they happened just yesterday just without the awful heat and humidity and of course the bugs (phew!). Special and grateful thanks to Lisa Ochoa, who deserves assistant editor credit for her help with proof-reading some of the material herein. Speaking of the next issue We have one more issue to close out this year of Line and Lure. The November issue will be our Versatility issue, featuring our CWA whippets achievements in conformation, agility, obedience, coursing, tracking, therapy, dock diving, flyball, or any other activity in which whippets can participate and excel. Of course regular advertising is always welcome too! All meet reports and results since the national will be included as well. The next deadline will be NOVEMBER 30th and I will make every effort to get the issue out on time! Beth Levine Editor, Line and Lure From the Editor CWA is online at Check it out for race results, grading guides, rules, top 10 (current and historical), Line and Lure and much more!

RACING FOR FUN Abbotsford, BC August 20/21, 2011 S aturday morning started with clear skies and very warm temperatures. Luckily there was a nice breeze that helped keep the temperature feeling a little cooler. In the morning we set up pools and hoses to help keep the dogs cool after running. This meet was one of RFF s largest yet with 40 adult starters, four of whom were FTEs. A big thank you goes to Linda J. for jumping in her car and coming over with Hugo last minute to help make 40. The meet started a little later than expected but we soon got back on track once racing began. Marshall and Daltrey battled it out for the top spot with Merlin hot on their heels. The brothers traded wins and once again tied for the meet win, splitting the top points of five NARX points each. With these two it all comes down to the box break. well and running strong in traffic. The battle for the lower two sets of ARX points continued, with Pete taking the middle set of four ARX points and Portia taking the bottom set of two for her first ARX points. Today s most improved racer was Finnegan. His box break and running style down the track improved greatly since the last meet, he may be another contender for ARX points, finishing just outside of them today. Between the third and fourth program we broke for lunch and some much needed time in the shade. Once again there was a great assortment of food to choose from. Today s potluck winner was Annette with her cold slaw with grapes and sunflower seeds. Thanks to everyone who brought something to share, as always it was the highlight of the day. It was very hard to get back to racing after eating so much food but somehow we managed to finish the last program. Merlin also had a good day of racing and looked like he was back to form running hard and finishing third in the meet, picking up two NARX points and the top set of six ARX points to finish his ARX. The racing was very tough throughout the grades with many of the dogs finishing the day tied in points. It was great to see last meet s FTE racers continue to run well and improve their running form. Today s FTEs also did very well for their first time out, breaking

RACING FOR FUN Abbotsford, BC August 20/21, 2011 Saturday match line-up: judge Catherine O Brien with #1 Kai, #2 Hokum, #3 Murphy, #4 Lovey Saturday s match judge Catherine O Brien (Curas) had a very large entry to work with. Her match winner was Kai followed by Hokum, Murphy, and Lovey. It was a long day of racing but we were all looking forward to another good of racing on Sunday. Sunday started much cooler with low clouds and a breeze, which was a big relief after the previous day s weather. Unfortunately the clouds did not last the day and the temperature soon rose by lunchtime. Pools and hoses were once again set up under the trees. We had a slightly smaller meet with 36 dogs and one puppy to start the day. It was great to see such a large turn out both days. This made for some very close and tight racing, with very few points separating the placements. All the new dogs continued to challenge the experienced racers, which made for some exciting racing. Marshall was having a good day of racing with Merlin pushing him hard for the meet win. Daltrey was having an off day and unfortunately came up sore after the meet. Pete had a very strong day of racing taking home the top set of five ARX points and one NARX point and finished the day only needing a handful of points to finish. The bottom sets of ARX points were very much up for grabs in the last program, with Portia, Seven and Lexy all in position to take home points depending on how the last few races finished. Portia and Seven went head to head in the semi race and Lexy needed a win in her lower race to take points. Lexy wasn t able to get the win with a close finish at the line, so

RACING FOR FUN Abbotsford, BC August 20/21, 2011 Sunday match line-up: judge Jeanette Dorsey with #1 Kai, #2 Murphy, #3 Seven, #4 Logan So now it was up to Seven and Portia to sort it out. Seven had a very good race and finished just ahead of Portia to split the bottom set of ARX points with her, each adding two points to their tallies. It was a very exciting finish to the day, and it looks like we will have many more close finishes to come with these girls. We had another lovely assortment of food to choose from with turkey burgers, salads, appetizers and two variations of peaches and cream cake. The potluck winner was Maria who brought multiple dishes that she made early that morning! There is some serious competition in the food department. Sunday s match judge was Jeanette Dorsey, and once again we had a very large entry in the match for her to choose from. Her match winner was Kai followed by Murphy, Seven, and Logan. Finally a big thank you to everyone who came out and supported the meet with all your entries and helping hands. It was great to have such a large meet and I hope this will continue in the future. So thank you to our lure operator Peter, box men Randy and Steve. Big thanks also all those who helped line judge: Nancy, Linda, Beth, Karen Jessica, Margaret, Janet and I know there was more so thank you as well. Last but not least thanks to those who helped load/catch dogs for those who needed help. Great job everyone and can t wait for the next one. - Jennifer Szabo, RFF Race Secretary See more great photos from RFF s meets online! Dean Williams Albums: Saturday & Sunday

9TH ANNUAL CWA NATIONAL Host Club: Dairyland Whippet Club September 2/3/4, 2011 Milwaukee, WI 18th Annual CWA Fun Match Friday, September 2, th Annual CWA National Saturday, September 3, 2011 Dairyland Whippet Club Sunday, September 4, 2011

18TH ANNUAL CWA FUN MATCH Judge: Patience Renzulli, Warburton Whippets, Paducah, KY September 2, 2011 A t the beginning of every judge s critique, the judge always says what an honor it was to be chosen/allowed/asked to judge. It has become cliché. Was I honored to be asked to judge the Annual Fun Match? Yes I was. But even more. This was a homecoming of sorts for me. My heart was full. As the good folks and dogs started to gather ringside before the match began, I looked around. I was struck by two thoughts: (1) Oh, there are a lot of beautiful whippets here, and (2) Uh-oh this is not going to be easy! PUPPIES Judge Patience Renzulli (Photo: James) DOGS 3-6 months 1. Diablesse Punting on the Cam at Surrey Hill A very nice masculine puppy with a pleasing topline and a promising future. 6-9 months 1. Marial Shamasan I Walk The Line Oh this was a nice puppy, as was his classmate/ littermate. Both smooth, with excellent free sidegait and correct movement coming and going. On this day, the other pup was a bit happy with his tail at times, making my impossible choice possible months 1. Debmar s First Mate at Lanruvi A quality dog with striking markings, and a nice head and neck. Lovely sidegait. Beautiful match awards (Photo: James) Happy spectators (Photo: James) BITCHES 3-6 months 1. Silkrock Surrey Hill Teenage Crime Spree at Mariner This was a tough class, which speaks well for all of the entrants, because this winner was a nice, nice puppy. All of her parts fit together perfectly, and she used them to her considerable advantage. Best puppy line-up (Photo: James)

18TH ANNUAL CWA FUN MATCH Judge: Patience Renzulli, Warburton Whippets, Paducah, KY September 2, months 1. Debmar s First Impression at Liberty A feminine bitch with a good front assembly and a beautiful head and neck. BEST PUPPY Silkrock Surrey Hill Teenage Crime Spree at Mariner I never saw this puppy put a toe wrong. (More on that later.) She held herself in beautiful balance, with proper angles throughout, smooth curves and outline, a feminine head and she moved with a power, grace, and correctness that belied her youth. Bred By Exhibitor Dog (Photo: Levine) BEST OF OPPOSITE SEX PUPPY Marial Shamasan I Walk The Line I would love to take this boy home! On this day he showed his age in a bit of leggy-ness, but when he is done and filled in, oooh, he s a good un! Smooth, masculine, and all whippet. ADULTS Open Dog (Photo: Levine) DOGS Bred By Exhibitor 1. Marial s Mequon, ARX, TRP A strikingly handsome dog. Nice head, good rear assembly. Open 1. Tru-Luv s Enjoy The Moment I liked this young dog very much. He had good, flat bone. Strong smooth musculature, and was nicely balanced. He showed smooth flowing sidegait and was correct on the down and back. This was a deep class. Champion Dog (Photo: Levine) Champion (When I first saw the line up for this class, I was dismayed. This was a lovely group of whippets. Lord help me!) 1. Willabe Cowpoke Caleb FCh, CGC This dog was all whippet. He had a wonderful, ARX Dog (Photo: Levine)

18TH ANNUAL CWA FUN MATCH Judge: Patience Renzulli, Warburton Whippets, Paducah, KY September 2, 2011 masculine whippet-y head, which was atop a nicely arched, unexaggerated neck. That neck flowed smoothly into his withers and there were those correct S-curves, top and bottom. He had a lovely front and a low set hock, without exaggeration and in perfect balance. He exhibited correct low, effortless sidegait and a proper down and back. (Have I used the words proper and correct enough in describing this dog?) ARX 1. CH Windflight s I Wanna Be Your Man, DPCX This whippet won another very competitive class. His nice balance, good outline, and efficient movement put him in front of some impressive dogs. Neutered Dog (Photo: Levine) Neutered 1. CH Surrey Hill s White Vienna FCH, DPC, SC (Unfortunately this nice dog had already been defeated in the Champion class, so he could not be considered for Best Adult.) BITCHES Novice Bitch (Photo: Levine) Novice 1. Mallyfield Lady Jane What a cutie! Lovely head and expression, and curves galore. She was a bit high in the rear, most likely due to her age. I would love to see her when she s mature. Bred By Exhibitor (Another hard decision two nice bitches) 1. Windflight s One Sweet Dream, TRP, DPC, OA, AXJ This bitch had a lovely shape including an enviable topline, beautiful type, and was nicely balanced. Bred By Exhibitor Bitch (Photo: Levine) Open 1. Diablesse Sweet Spot Says Masters A nice young bitch with great depth of brisket and a good strong loin. Champion 1. Can CH Whimsy s Swiftsure Kilo Kai, TRP, DPC A beautiful bitch who moved with that effortless, Open Bitch (Photo: Levine)

18TH ANNUAL CWA FUN MATCH Judge: Patience Renzulli, Warburton Whippets, Paducah, KY September 2, 2011 ground covering sidegait that the standard calls for. Also clean coming and going. Nice shoulder, well let down hocks. ARX 1. Cogshall s Spider Lily of Coswin, ARX, SRA2, DPCX, PRXIV, CRX A typey girl with a very athletic build, though feminine through and through. I was very pleased with this class lovely bitches of classic type. None overdone, no masculinity or coarseness. Champion Bitch (Photo: Levine) Altered 1. Can CH Swiftsure Sierra Leone, FCH, TRP, DPC, PR2, OTR, SR Oh, I loved this bitch. I m getting redundant, but by now you know what I was looking for! Type, proper shape, balance, and the clean effortless ground covering movement. BEST ADULT Willabe Cowpoke Caleb FCh, CGC I had showed against this dog a couple of times in the past, but since I was busy showing my own dog, I hadn t paid him much attention. When I saw him in my line up, I thought, Well, looky there. This dog, standing, is close to my ideal whippet. (I fear especially with males we are teetering dangerously on the edge of losing type in this country. I see bone these days that would look great on a foxhound, but our standard calls for moderate bone throughout. I see heads that would be great on a greyhound. And I lament the loss of S curves but I digress.) He moved as well as he stood and he was my Best Adult. ARX Bitch (Photo: Levine) Altered Bitch (Photo: Levine) BEST OF OPPOSITE SEX ADULT Can CH Whimsy s Swiftsure Kilo Kai, TRP, DPC An elegant bitch of whom any breeder should be very proud! VETERANS They were all perfect. That s all I have to say about Best Veteran (Photo: Levine)

18TH ANNUAL CWA FUN MATCH Judge: Patience Renzulli, Warburton Whippets, Paducah, KY September 2, 2011 that! As Forrest Gump s mama said, Perfect is as perfect does, and they were all absolutely perfect. BEST VETERAN was a gate entry, but I was able to look her up, since she won the Turtle Award. CH Whippoorwill Mystic, SC, RE, CD, CGC. I had no clue who she was and I loved her. Her handler presented her beautifully, but she was quite the little vision. I loved her. Oh I said that. BEST IN MATCH The Cutest (Photo: Levine) I loved my Best Puppy. I loved my Best Adult. I loved my Best Veteran. What was I to do? I went over them again. I moved them again. I examined them coming and going again. Flawless. Arrgh!!! So I used the tie breaker: the Arthurs Acres Hill. Yes, I did. I moved them down and back, perpendicular to the direction of the track, so they had to come back at me down the hill. Tssk!! But what else could I do? The Border Collie who (not sure which one) (Photo: James) And lo and behold, who came at me without so much as a pastern flip or an elbow wing? The PUPPY!!! Good merciful heavens that was that. Best in Match was Silkrock Surrey Hill Teenage Crime Spree at Mariner and congratulations to all of her connections! Thank you all for showing your beautiful dogs. The Best Household Pet That Could Not Be Left At Home was a three-way tie. There was (1) the Cutest, (1) The Border Collie Who Thought His Owner Was Lost, and (1)The Border Collie Who Thought His Owner Should Be at an Agility Trial. They all won. It was so very good to see you all. Best in Match (she is a puppy after all!) (Photo: James) -Patience Renzulli Warburton Whippets Paducah, KY Best in Match (Photo: James)

18TH ANNUAL CWA FUN MATCH Judge: Patience Renzulli, Warburton Whippets, Paducah, KY September 2, 2011 T he Dairyland Whippet Club hosted the 18th Annual CWA Fun Match and 9th Annual CWA National Race Meet at Arthur s Acres, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, September 2-4, This was the third time we have hosted the CWA National, the previous two being the inaugural in 2003 and again in In spite of the poor economy this year, the entry was spectacular and included the top Whippets from coast to coast. Whippets competed from ten States (California, Illinois, Louisiana, Maryland, Minnesota, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin) and the Canadian Province of British Columbia. The catalog was a well done and professional looking publication. It had complete information on each dog pre-entered in the weekend events plus many ads. Lisa Ochoa put a lot of hard work into information gathering. Thank you to Lisa for doing the catalog. Worker Bee Extraordinaire Mary Beth Arthur (Photo: James) Despite the rains and softening of the parking/walking areas, they healed quickly after the event was over. Thank you to everyone who kept their areas tidy and clean. We really appreciate it. The weather began with brutal heat and humidity. It was 90 degrees for the Fun Match on Friday, followed by all-day rain and drizzle for the National events on Saturday and then much cooler and pleasant conditions for the Dairyland events on Sunday. But Whippeteers are a hardy bunch and everyone survived the less than ideal weather. Special thank you to the grounds crew, Doug Arthur and Peggy Berg. They put in countless hours preparing the grounds, cutting grass, cleaning/organizing the garage and setting up the track and show ring. The lush, green track (Photo: James) Whippeteers are a hardy bunch... (Photo: James)

9TH ANNUAL CWA NATIONAL Milwaukee, WI September 3, 2011 Thursday, September 1 Festivities began with a cook-out on Thursday evening for all the early out-of-town arrivals. Lisa Ochoa and Pat Reynolds brought sweet corn and cooked it on the grill along with marinated zucchini and squash. Doug, the Master Griller, made hamburgers and bratwurst. Thank you to Jennifer Smith for her CWA National Design featuring the state of Wisconsin and Whippets. T-shirts distribution began Thursday for those who arrived and had ordered one. Friday, September 2 By the time everyone arrived Friday morning, there were eight RVs and trailers (four from Camp Canada (Photo: James) British Columbia) parked throughout Arthur s Acres, together with the many vans that typically attend. Friday s Fun Match entry drew 54 dogs (including three non-whippets that could not be left at home). Thank you to Basenji owner and our Ring Steward, Susan Cook for a job well done. Judge Patience Renzulli selected the Best Puppy bitch Silkrock Surrey Hill Teenage Crime Spree at Mariner, owned by Karen Lee & Kristen Fredericks, as Best in Match. Best Adult in Match was Ch. Willabe Cowpoke Caleb. Best Veteran was Ch. Whippoorwill Last year s National winner will he repeat? (Photo: James) Mystic. Just prior to Best in Match judging, President Ule James announced the parade of nine Legends who came into the ring individually. Ule read a brief write up of each one: Banjo, Bongo, Coalby, Daisy, Gus, Lily, Jessie, Joey and Winston. It was wonderful to honor these Whippets for their accomplishments in the CWA Whippet race and show world. Thank you to Trophy Chair Lisa Costello for the ceramic prizes that went to all the class winners and placers, as well as to the major Incredible awards table (Photo: James)

9TH ANNUAL CWA NATIONAL Milwaukee, WI September 3, 2011 A little rain never hurt anyone... (Photo: James) The group then relaxed and got ready for the next day s activities, except the Canadians who had the stamina to stay up and partee! Although we don t know for sure what they were, it is likely the extremely hot weather brought out a crop of teeny tiny biting insects that were not noticeable until after they bit. A number of people ended up with red itchy bumps on their legs. The culprits could have been either or both chiggers or midges (noseeums). awards. There were many generous people who sponsored the awards and Lisa chose to donate that money to Sharon Couzin to help her in her battle with ovarian cancer. Lisa ended up donating all the prizes and rosettes for the CWA National and Friday Fun Match. Thank you Lisa for your generosity. Thank you to our Masters of The Food, Janet Siehndel and Peggy Berg. The Friday evening meal included Subway sub sandwiches from Menomonee Falls plus side dishes (including Connie s tuna pasta salad). Leftovers were put out for Saturday s lunch break. Following the meal the first day s raffle winners were drawn and distributed to the winners. Thank you to Krista Siehndel for gathering items and selling tickets for the raffle extravaganza lasting three days. It was truly fantastic to have three days of separate raffles, with at least 60 items each day. Saturday, September 3 It rained and drizzled pretty steady most of Saturday (.5 inch of rain), but we never had lightning, so the group voted to run all four programs rather than an abbreviated three. The final high point: Kazi, Joey, Bolt, Marshall, Rafa, Beau (Photo: James) Saturday s entry was 53 adults and 7 puppies. Winning three of four hi-point races and placing first in the National for the second consecutive year was the California dog The Mighty Bolt of Wyndsor, ARX, ORC, (Bolt) who was timed in 11:68, 11:66 and 11:70 for the three races he won. Placing second and earning 6 ARX points was FTE Lookout Nonstopp Kamikaze (Kazi), who won the last hi-point race. Happy legends (Photo: James) Third in the meet was Can. Ch. Fireworks Eminence Front, ARX, NARX2, DPCX, TRP, PR3, SR, ADC, SGDC (Marshall) followed by Tru-Luv s Enjoy The Moment (Joey) who placed 4th and earned the 4 ARX points.

9TH ANNUAL CWA NATIONAL Milwaukee, WI September 3, 2011 The final ARX point was shared by Fireworks Thunderstruck, FCh (Pete) and Debmar s Sparks Will Fly at Liberty, CGC (Flynn) who tied for 13th in the meet. Two puppies tied for first place, Debmar s First Mate at Lanruvi (Billy Budd) and UCH Debmar First Fling of Lanruvi (Fling). Dean Wegner, foul judge extraordinaire (Photo: James) Close, competitive puppy races (Photo: James) Thank you to timers Jeff Ollswang and Doug. Thank you to our exceptional box operator on Saturday, Fred Luehrs. Watch out for Noogies when Fred is nearby. Rhonda Gold judged Saturday s conformation match of 25 beautiful Whippets and selected 1st Ch. Willabe Cowpoke Caleb (Caleb), 2nd Windflight s I ve Just Seen A Face (Shasta), 3rd Can Ch. Whimsy s Swiftsure Kilo Kai, TRP, DPC (Kai) and 4th Surrey Hill s U Sunk My Battleship! ARX CR (Bomber). Following the match, there was a pig and chicken roast along with lots of delicious side dishes, which were devoured by the participants. Thank you to Lynn and Jeff Ollswang for the delicious cakes, which were decorated by Jeff. One cake was the CWA National cake and the second one recognized our 45th Wedding Anniversary (September 3rd). That was very kind of you, Lynn and Jeff. President Ule James announced and presented the CWA Title Certificates to Whippets that earned titles this year. After this presentation, the Awards ceremony was held and it was very special. A beautiful display of gorgeous rosettes and ceramic prizes made by Lisa Costello was set up. There were many generous people who sponsored the awards and Lisa chose to donate that money to Sharon Couzin to help her in her battle with ovarian cancer. Thank you Lisa for your generosity and hard work to make and set up the special prize display. This was followed by the second day s raffle and the winners were drawn. It was a long but exhilarating day and everyone went off to rest and get ready for the next full day and to dry out and tend to their red itchy bumps. Sunday, September 4 The weather improved for Sunday s Dairyland Whippet Club events, with temperatures dropping into the 70 s with no rain. The ground in front of the starting boxes was torn up and slick due to the previous day s rain, so the boxes were moved six feet forward shortening the running distance. This was so dogs would once again be breaking into grass ra- Zombie apocalypse? (Photo: James)

Tieing for fifth was Lookout Nonstopp Leapin Lizard (Lizzie), who earned 2 ARX points, and her sire, Nonstopp Nadal of Wyndsor, ARX, NARX, CRX, FCh, CGC (Rafa). Earning the 1 ARX point was Serendipity Hark the Lark (Seven). Fling was High Point Puppy. Dashing Hells Belles (Max) was 2nd and Diablesse Sweet Spot Says Masters (Aria) was third. Awards were presented and then the third and final raffle prizes were drawn. The spectacular Silent Auction ended at Noon Sunday. The CWA website listed items that were donated for a silent auction to benefit the CWA, WRAP, WHF and Sharon Couzin. The items were on display during the CWA National events and bids could continue to be made until closing the next day. Thank you to Lisa Ochoa for posting the many great items and keeping track of the bids.

9TH ANNUAL CWA NATIONAL Milwaukee, WI September 3, 2011 In the end, the silent auction made a total of $ 1,515 ($305 of this goes directly to Sharon Couzin leaving $1210 to divide) and the raffle $2,085. Of that money the CWA will get 10%, WRAP 17%, WHF 18% and Sharon Couzin 55%. Thank you to everyone who bid in the silent auction and to those who bought raffle tickets. A BIG thanks to all the donors of items. They are listed in the CWA National catalog. We would like to thank everyone that generously donated raffle and silent auction items. The raffle tables were full each day. A special thank you goes to Trophy Chair, Lisa Costello. She made almost all the trophies for the Annual Fun Match and CWA National. 53 9TH ANNUAL CWA NATIONAL Milwaukee, WI September 3, CWA National Race Meet Match Critique National match line-up: judge Rhonda Gold with #1 Caleb, #2 Shasta, #3 Kai, #4 Bomber (Photo: James) I want to thank the CWA for inviting me to Wisconsin to judge the National Race Meet Match. It was wonderful to see old friends and to meet new folks enjoying the combined sport of racing and conformation. What an amazing event from the excitement of the blanketed whippet racers dashing up the fast track to the eats and raffles! I am pleased to report that only one mosquito ate me for dessert! If you have never attended a CWA National now is the time to mark your calendar. I appreciated that the conformation entries have all run full race programs in heavy competition to qualify to step into the ring for the CWA National Race Meet Match. I strongly support the multi-purpose whippet and I enjoyed judging our breed with an eye towards elegance, fitness, denoting great speed, power and balance without coarseness, as called for in our breed standard. The complete final line-up in the ring prior to selecting the four place winners included lovely athletic dogs and bitches that possessed smooth defined muscles as well as sound movement from every view. I have included all of the final contenders below. I regret that the match took place in the rain as I feel that some of the whippets that did not make the final line -up were hindered by the weather and did not display their best movement and showwhippetship during the rainy afternoon match. Final four placements follow: FIRST: CH WILLABE COWPOKE CALEB FCH, CGC A moderate balanced fawn dog with a beautiful expression, large dark round eye, and long graceful neck into well laid back shoulders. He was fit and athletic with a smooth topline and natural gentle sloping arch. He showed great flexibility and did not flatten on the move. The first place dog showed powerful correct gait neither turning inward or outward and possessed ease of movement from all views. SECOND: WINDFLIGHT S I VE SEEN A FACE An elegant shapely moderate white bitch with red markings that possessed a deep brisket and nice front fill. She had a long elegant neck that flowed smoothly into the shoulders with adequate topline and natural arch beginning over the loin and carried over the croup which she

9TH ANNUAL CWA NATIONAL Milwaukee, WI September 3, CWA National Race Meet Match Critique held correctly on the move. Flexible pasterns and short low hocks suited her lovely S curves. THIRD: CAN CH WHIMSY S SWIFTSURE KILO KAI TRP, DPC A striking fawn brindle and white bitch with a beautiful head and large eye. She was able to maintain her topline and body carriage on the move and effortlessly cover ground even after four race programs. Athletic and muscled bitch yet balanced without coarseness, she was not exaggerated in any way. FOURTH: SURREY HILL S U SUNK MY BATTLESHIP ARX, CR A blue fawn brindle male with a smooth luxurious coat. He was well angulated front and rear. Lovely head and expression, long neck flowing gently into the shoulders with adequate shape and topline carriage. Consistent reach and drive on every go around moving with ease on the down and back with nicely muscled second thigh. Seemed to appreciate the rainy day! The final line-up, in no particular order, in addition to the dogs aforementioned, included: AFFINITY ORANGE BLOSSOM SPECIAL ARX, TRP, FCH, PR2 FC MARINER S CHUBBY HUBBY ARX, TRP, DPCX, FCH SERENDIPITY HARK THE LARK FC LICKETYSPLIT CATCH A TAIL WIND MC, OTR, TRP Thank you again for this wonderful opportunity to lay hands on such fine athletes. 62 EASTWARD BOUND: The Journey to the 2011 CWA National By Jennifer, Emily, and Nancy Szabo T his is the story of how four crazy Canadians (Nancy, Peter, Jennifer, and Emily) and their three whippets (Austin, Cleo, and Marshall) all piled into a truck and drove 2000 miles to the CWA Nationals. August 25, 2011 Day One (Across the Border ) The long-awaited day finally arrived! It was finally time to pack the trailer and hit the open road. Our tradition of not leaving for a trip without having to return home for a forgotten item continues. At least we only had to go back once this time, to retrieve our snack/dinner of roast beef sandwiches....mom was almost left on the side of the road for excessive nattering. We found a radio station playing songs she could sing along with, and then turned up the volume, which helped a lot. Our plan for the first day was to make it as far as we could across Washington state. We had little traffic on our march to the border, and then lucked out when we met the nicest border guard ever! We heard all about his pet cow Mocha and experienced one of the easiest border crossings in our history. but Mom was almost left on the side of the road for excessive nattering. We found a radio station playing songs she could sing along with, and then turned up the volume, which helped a lot. We finally arrived in Spokane, Washington, but the GPS directed us to a dollar store instead of Wal-Mart, so our stop for the night was delayed until we finally found the Wal- Mart around 1:00am. August 26, 2011 Day 2 (Spokane, WA to Deer Lodge, MT) We were awakened at an unreasonably early hour by a combination of street sweeper and nearby construction. Happily, Starbucks was only a short walk away (and little did we know that it was the last Starbucks we would see for many miles). We drove through the upper tip of Idaho very quickly it came and went before we knew it. The weather was very hot with temps in the upper 90s, so we stopped at the KOA in Deer We made very good time through Seattle (always a plus), but unfortunately were delayed by rock blasting on the Snoqualmie pass for an hour and a half. We were all very happy that we had stopped for dinner before we hit this snag. We eventually got moving around 10:00pm,

EASTWARD BOUND: The Journey to the 2011 CWA National By Jennifer, Emily, and Nancy Szabo Lodge, Montana. We knew that the KOA would have full hookups, and air conditioning was a must-have. The location was very pretty, and our camping spot was enhanced by the stream running behind it. We struck up a conversation with the KOA owners and, amazingly, discovered that we had mutual friends. What a small world! August 27, Day 3 (Deer Lodge, MT to Yellowstone, WY) We woke early and left the campsite at the record time (for us) of 8:00am. We were all excited to get to Yellowstone. We missed the first turnoff to Yellowstone, as the GPS and the map were not in agreement, and ended up on a scenic route down the 191 through the Gallatin National Forest. We wanted to stop for lunch, and finally found a spot to pull over beside a beautiful river that had many...just as we were finishing our meal, a couple of strangers came walking into camp who could it be? Why, Linda and Steve and their whole whippet crew! fly fishermen trying their luck with the fish. We went down to the river to see the water, which was shallow, and very cold and fastflowing. We arrived at the campground, and discovered that the campsites were very small. It was tricky getting the trailer and the truck into the space, but we managed somehow. We pulled out our massive steaks and started the barbecue. Dinner was interrupted for a space when the skies opened up with thunder, lightning, and RAIN. Just as we were finishing our meal, a couple of strangers came walking into camp who could it be? Why, Linda and Steve and their whole whippet crew! They had figured out We eventually arrived in West Yellowstone. We did some shopping and then headed into the park. We didn t have to look hard to see the wildlife. The appearance of bison, elk, and deer caused traffic jams at every occurrence. We had our own wildlife encounter when we came through a herd of bison. Some of them were swimming across the Yellowstone River, which was an amazing sight, considering their size.

EASTWARD BOUND: The Journey to the 2011 CWA National By Jennifer, Emily, and Nancy Szabo what section we were in and stopped by for a visit. August 28, Day 4 (South Loop around Yellowstone) Time to go explore Yellowstone! We decided to take the south loop first as we all wanted to see Old Faithful. We stopped at West Thumb and took a walk around the hot springs and paint pots, then made our way to Old Faithful s location. We had to wait about 40 minutes to see it go off, but it erupted right on time. We were amazed to see so much water go so high in the air. After that excitement, it was time for a snack. We got some ice cream and enjoyed some shade with the dogs. farther off into the distance. August 29, Day 5 (North Loop Around Yellowstone) We found plenty to see on the north loop around the part. Our first stop was the Mud Volcanoes and the Sulphur Cauldron. There were bison all around the geysers at the Mud Volcanoes, with some coming very close to the boardwalk. The next stop was The Grand Canyon of Yellowstone. There were amazing waterfalls and rock formations all around this area of the park. Jen and Peter were crazy and took the Uncle Tom Trail - over 300 steps straight down, and the same back up again. (Emily and Nancy opted to decline this opportunity.) We stopped at Canyon Village and got some well-deserved ice cream, to beat the heat, and then we took the drive up Mount Wash- We continued our explorations with stops at Black Sand Basin, which had a lot of active springs and geysers, and at Midway Geyser, which was very beautiful. We took turns between seeing the sights and staying with the dogs. As the day died down, we headed back to camp. As we returned, we got a close-up view of herds of elk, but the bison moved

EASTWARD BOUND: The Journey to the 2011 CWA National By Jennifer, Emily, and Nancy Szabo were between the Undine Falls and Mammoth. We weren t sure if it was or not, until we saw it in the binoculars. We lucked out and got a picture of it walking through the scrub brush. burn, where the wind almost blew us off the mountain and the temperature dropped to 65 degrees. Our last stop for the day was the Mammoth Hot Springs; they were very large and impressive to see. Then we headed back to camp for a great dinner and a good night s sleep. As we reached our campsite it looked like we might have to wait for a large herd of Bison to cross the bridge, but luckily we passed over before they blocked the way. On the way back down, we stopped at a pullout and sat in the truck to see if any bears would come by. Marshall started barking out the other window, and we all turned around just in time to see a coyote slip over the crest of the hill. We had to apologize to Marshall for telling him to shush. An afternoon thunderstorm came up fast as we were looking at the petrified tree, so we piled back into the truck and headed out. We took an accidental detour, but it wasn t a wasted side trip because we saw a large mule deer. Just as we made it back to the main road, the sun came out and it was again clear and bright. We weren t done with wildlife sightings for the day, as a wolf showed itself while we August 30, Day 6 (Yellowstone to Custer, SD, just outside of Mount Rushmore) It was time to say goodbye to the bison and head back to the eastbound freeway. We bought our souvenir cups and shirts at the general store and headed out. The journey out of Yellowstone was made down a very twisty and steep road. We then drove through the city of Cody which bills itself as the world s largest rodeo town. The main street was lined with hundreds of American flags, and everyone seemed very happy. We took Highway 16 through Greybull. It was very hot and flat; little did we know it was only the beginning. Mom soon realized that the pronghorn antelopes were not a rare sight, and are in fact about as abundant as

EASTWARD BOUND: The Journey to the 2011 CWA National By Jennifer, Emily, and Nancy Szabo the great blue herons in Maple Ridge....The lady would not stop talking and asking questions until we finally lost the signal. And Nancy was no longer allowed to talk to anyone we met on the trip. It was a day for conversing with strangers. We stopped in New Castle for groceries and there was a man with a story who wouldn t let us go until he was finished. Then, in Gilette, we stopped at a Wal-Mart and the cashier wouldn t give us our change until she finished telling us about The Young and the Restless. It was late by the time we got away from her, and we needed air conditioning, so Nancy called ahead to the KOA in Custer to make reservations. The lady would not stop talking and asking questions until we finally lost the signal. And Nancy was no longer allowed to talk to anyone we met on the trip. August 31, Day 7 (Custer, SD to Adrien, MN) We started the day in Custer with a shopping trip to a great store that sold foxtails and all sorts of animal parts. We picked up some new lures for the next meet. We drove past Crazy Horse Mountain. It was very big and really amazing to see. Next we made a stop at Mount Rushmore. It was very interesting to see in person, but unfortunately it was so hot that we couldn t stay too long. On the way back to the car we saw a monarch butterfly. Back on the road, we saw a hundred signs for Wall Drug. The signs kept us rather entertained, considering they were just about the only thing to see other than corn and windmills. We couldn t help ourselves and had to make a stop at Wall Drug to see what it was all about. Unfortunately, we were a little disappointed when we actually stopped, because the people working there were very crabby. But we found a snake cup a la Craig Ferguson for Peter and had some ice cream, so the stop wasn t a total loss. The rest of the day s drive was very flat and very HOT with temperatures hitting 99 degrees. There was also a very strong cross wind which caused our gas mileage go down considerably. With not much to see, we

EASTWARD BOUND: The Journey to the 2011 CWA National By Jennifer, Emily, and Nancy Szabo passed the time by listening to the Arrogant Worms and reading. Just as we crossed into Minnesota, we found a beautiful municipal campground that was a sight for sore eyes. There were very loud cicada bugs, but happily, they quieted down once the sun set. September 1, Day 8 (Adrien, MN to Milwaukee, WI) Yes, we arrived! By this time, we were having a hard time remembering which state or what day it was, but we knew there wasn t far to go. We were just outside of Wisconsin when Linda and Steve called, and they were only a few hours ahead of us. We crossed the then headed in to try and get some sleep. Our generator stopped working at 2:00am and the trailer quickly started to heat up. September 2, Day 9 (Fun Match and Lightning) It was another very warm humid day, with the Canadians melting in the heat. The last of the west coasters Kate and Hugh Clarke and Beth Levine arrived safely, and then it was a matter of waiting for the show to start. While waiting, several of us made a trip to the local grocery store to enjoy some air conditioning and restock our food and drink supply. mighty Mississippi to leave Minnesota and enter Wisconsin, which was a most impressive sight. Wisconsin was lovely and green but quite hot and humid. By late afternoon we arrived at the beautiful Arthur s Acres. We were all looking forward to being off the road and in one place for the next three days. Linda and Steve had started on the Canadian Pavilion with some flags waving in the breeze. The breeze felt more like a steam bath from all the humidity (West coasters are really not familiar with humidity) and we soon started to melt. Once the match started, we stayed under the shelters around the show ring in hopes of keeping cool while the show was going on, but alas, the hot and sticky weather prevailed. The show drew great entry, with many very nice dogs making their way into the ring. Once the show was over, everyone enjoyed the sub sandwiches and drinks, and then it That night we had a wonderful BBQ dinner provided by the Arthurs. I think we all went back for seconds as it was just all so good. After dinner we all relaxed around the camp,

EASTWARD BOUND: The Journey to the 2011 CWA National By Jennifer, Emily, and Nancy Szabo was time to party at Camp Canada. The bugs were out in force but things improved greatly once the citronella candles and bug spray came out. Unfortunately the bug spray and such didn t help Linda very much. She was nearly eaten alive. Eventually, we all retired to bed. It was a very warm night, and we still had no air conditioning, so no one slept much. Naturally, once we had all settled in and dozed off, a big thunderstorm made its way through. There was a big thunderstorm. The rain was hammering down and the wind was howling, so we all scrambled up to close windows and bring canopies down. So much for sleeping that night! September 3, Day 10 (National Race Meet) I won t go into much detail about the racing since all that has been recorded elsewhere. Plus, we were having too much fun all day to make many notes on the day s results. The day started out with temperatures in the 80s, but it started to rain shortly after the first program. What a relief! It was still fairly warm, so the rain was refreshing without chilling the people or the dogs. It was almost like racing at home except that we usually get cold rain. The racing was most exciting, with many close races throughout the programs. Congratulations to all the racers who came and ran so well, and big congrats to Jean and Vince on their two-time national meet winner Bolt. We are so glad they were able to make the long journey east, since everyone always has a good time when they are around....then we all headed back to Camp Canada, where we allowed some foreign visitors to enter without passports. By the time the meet ended, the rain was pouring down, and we had a very wet fun match. The weather did nothing to reduce the entries however, and there was a large number of dogs competing for placements. Once the racing and showing were done, it was time to eat! Yeah! We were all looking forward to the pulled pork with great expectation, and we weren t disappointed. There was lots of yummy food and drink for everyone to enjoy. Then it was raffle time! We were quite lucky and won a lot of prizes, so this activity was definitely a big success. The evening of Day 10 was much cooler, so all the dogs and humans slept very well

EASTWARD BOUND: The Journey to the 2011 CWA National By Jennifer, Emily, and Nancy Szabo (definitely a plus). September 4, Day 11 (Dairyland Race Meet) The morning started off nice and sunny and noticeably cooler that the previous day. The racing was tight and very close all day, and most exciting to watch. Thanks to the improved weather, Jen got to play with her camera and took some excellent photos, both on and off the track. Congrats again to all the racers who ran and showed so well! It was a great finish to the national meet weekend. We all enjoyed a wonderful dinner of pizza We loved seeing Jean and Vince, they are such an amazing couple. The stories we will remember for years to come (every time we see a squirrel we will think of Mary Huff and smile). It was fun to have Beth Levine join our Canadian contingent, even though she stayed in the hotel at night. Linda and Steve kept us focused. And Barb and Howard, who were the real travelers - they didn t even have air conditioning! There were a lot of great times and some fantastic memories that would take too long to mention. It was an unforgettable trip to say the least. plus leftovers from the night before. Once the prizes were handed out, it was raffle time! Nancy and Linda both did very well. They won so much loot that the rest of us were wondering where we were going to put it all for the trip home. Then we all headed back to Camp Canada, where we allowed some foreign visitors to enter without passports. We all spent the night yakking and sharing our favorite unforgettable stories. Thanks to everyone who welcomed us to the Nationals! We will never forget all the wonderful and interesting people we met on our journey, or especially the outstanding hospitality of Mary Beth and Doug Arthur, who let us set up camp on their beautiful property.
