1 Line and Lure The official publication of the ontinental Whippet Alliance Photo by Allen argen Volume 27 Number 4, October 2017 Versatility Issue

2 Line and Lure is published in February, May, July, October and December. For more information or to purchase ads via paypal, visit: WA and Line and Lure take no responsibiity for statements or claims made in advertisements that appear in this publication. The ontinental Whippet Alliance was formed to achieve the following objectives: 1. to unite Whippet fanciers with the common goal of promoting, protecting and preserving purebred Whippet racing 2. to encourage and promote quality in the breeding and racing of Whippets and to do all that is possible to bring their natural instincts to perfection 3. to urge members and breeders to accept the Whippet Standard of the reed as approved by the American Kennel lub as the only standard of excellence for Whippets 4. to do all in its power to protect and advance the interests of the Whippet by encouraging sportsmanlike competition at race meets and conformation competitions and by providing a friendly and enjoyable environment 5. to provide a testing ground for Whippets to demonstrate they still have the instinct, desire and physical ability to do the athletic activity they were bred for, helping to maintain the Whippet as a healthy breed From the Editor I do believe turnaround on this issue might be a new world record! I appreciate that nearly everyone was able to get their material in on time, which allowed me to keep on schedule. To the few people who weren't able to meet the short extended deadline, I apologize that I couldn't wait any longer. I'll be happy to include your material in the next issue, so please do send it along. Speaking of the next issue, it will be the always eagerly awaited Annual Top Ten issue... that's right, the issue with all the FREE ADS! Yes, you heard me right, FREE ADS for all the whippets lucky enough to land a spot in the racing, high combined, and conformation Top Tens, and FREE PHOTOS of all the honorable mention dogs (#11-20) in each set of standings! And if your dog was both fast and beautiful enough to finish in multiple sets of standings, then they are entitled to a free ad and/or photo for each accomplishment, or you can combine into one ad if that is easier! You're only limited by your creativity and your ability to meet the deadline, so if you've got a contender, get that deadline on your calendars now and start planning your ads. The only requirement for the ads is that they must reference somewhere the appropriate Top Ten and placement, e.g. High ombined #1. The Honorable Mention photos can be any photo stacked, running or candid of your choice. As this issue goes to press, there is still one last meet left on the calendar, so the final standings are not yet available. ut keep an eye on the WA website for updates, and I'll be contacting the lucky owners in person as soon as the year-end standings are finalized. I hope that everyone whose dogs earned top honors in 2017 will participate in this important historic issue. Please don't make me beg (or at least not repeatedly)! I would like to be able to get this issue out before the end of January, but I can only do it with your help and cooperation in meeting the deadline. NEXT DEADLINE January 15, 2018 Of course, regular advertising is always welcome at the regular rate of $15 for a full page. The deadline for ads and other submissions will be January 15th. As 2017 comes to a close, I want to wish everyone in the WA family Happy Holidays, whatever that holiday may be, and all the best in the 2018.

29 GRR Georgia Rag Racing September 23/24, 2017 Hull, GA report by hris Durance-Watkins, photos by Jennifer Kempey What an awesome weekend of racing! The fire ants put a little damper on it for some of us, but we managed. Lesson learned not to let the field grow during the summer between meets so the farmer can get more cuttings off our property. The weather was in the upper 80s during the day and in the 60s at night, perfect for camping and indeed we had several people camping out of their vehicles this weekend. Thank you Dawn McDonald for bringing everyone s breakfast favorite, pigs in a blanket. The made-fromscratch biscuits my husband, Dave, made were out of this world. We decided to not break for lunch but to instead throw sandwich fixins out and let people come and eat as they could. Thanks to Deana McNamer and Mary Pick from bringing the meat and bread, and to Lisa Saunders for bringing salads to go with them. Saturday we had 36 adults and one puppy. Our top NARX points went to meet winner Skywalker, second set of points to Jedi, and last set to Mudbug, all owned by Maurice and Deborah ahm. Top ARX points (5) went to FTE Stella, who was sixth in the meet! ongrats to Nancy Therese, Dan Mcarel and breeder/co-owner Donna Miner on Stella s most AWESOME weekend from proofing on Friday, to FTE on Saturday, to leaving with 10 ARX points on Sunday! I imagine Nancy flew home and made it an easy trip for travelling partner, Liz. The second set of ARX points was awarded to Khaleesi, and third set to Josephine, both owned by Maurice and Deborah ahm.

30 GRR Georgia Rag Racing September 23/24, 2017 Hull, GA report by hris Durance-Watkins, photos by Jennifer Kempey Saturday match judge Nubby Errickson and #1 Elliott, #2 Weston, #3 Dora, #4 arolina Our match was judged by longtime whippet breeder/ judge Nubby Errickson of Amigo whippets. What an honor! We had a match entry of 21 of our 36 running whippets. Makes me smile when we have over half our entry participating in the match. Star. This little girl is HOT! She went from an FTE on Saturday to leaving with 10 ARX points on Sunday! The second set of ARX points went to one of GRR s own, Match placements were awarded as follows: first Elliott, second Weston, third Dora, and fourth aroline. Three of these dog have some pretty nice AW Specialty wins under their belts. There was no DP leg available today. Our High ombined was Weston! Sunday held steady at 36 dogs and one pup. The weather was still perfect! Mudbug was our meet winner taking home 5 NARX points, followed by Skywalker and Jedi. All three are owned by Maurice and Deborah ahm. Huge congrats! I think Mudbug is going to be a dog to watch in the future. Top ARX points again went to Stella, Domino Ottawa Saturday High ombined Weston

31 GRR Georgia Rag Racing September 23/24, 2017 Hull, GA report by hris Durance-Watkins, photos by Jennifer Kempey Sunday match judge Kellee Livinston and #1 rooks, #2 Weston, #3 Dora, #4 Herkules rooks, Rhine s Thunder Rolls at Raybar. ongrats indy and Angela on his first 3 ARX points! The last ARX point went to Remington owned by the ahms. Thanks for everyone s help! See you in December! Our match judge was Kellee Livingstone, who was a race secretary for WA in alifornia before she moved to North arolina! I was so excited that she accepted to come judge as I had been trying to get her to come to a WA meet here on the East oast since she moved. She judged 14 dogs and her placements were as follows: first rooks, second Weston, third Dora, and fourth Herkules. The DP leg went to rooks and he was also our High ombined winner! What an awesome day for rooks, who placed 9th in a 36 dog meet for 3 ARX points, and went on to win the match and earn the coveted High ombined award! People that s what it s all about! As always we have a lot of fun! We look forward to several new people competing at our December meet. Sunday match winner and high combined rooks

39 NWFA Northern report by Jean alint A Whippet Fanciers Assn September 23/24, 2017 Suisun, A We had great weather and a great entry of 43 whippets for our Saturday race meet. 48 PDQ/WA Pretty report and photos by Kristy Thomas Darn Quick Whippet lub adgerland Whippet lub October 7/8, 2017 Milwaukee, WI Pretty Darn Quick and adgerland's October 7th and 8th race meets in Milwaukee were the only club events for 2017 due to the big PGA tour in the area earlier in the year. However, we made the best of our one and only race meet. As a bonus, it was PDQ's 10th anniversary! We had whippet cookies for all made by Kristy's mom and Jen, small gifts for every entry and lots of extra special prizes for all, including an incredible wooden whippet planter made from marine grade wood donated by Rick and Gail Strack, won by Levi's mom, Kathy! While the forecast called for rain all day Saturday, it held off till late in the afternoon when all that was left to do was to eat dessert. The food was wonderful, thanks to all that brought the tasty goods! Jen and Rick were the grill masters, serving up fresh hamburgers, brats and veggie burgers both days. We had 20 adults racing both days, with no puppies, although to say no puppies were there would be silly, as we had a plethora of puppies in attendance! We had many new faces and Whippets there to watch and enjoy the festivities. There was time made for everyone who wanted to practice both days. We are hoping they all come back next spring to Arthurs' Acres to train. We had a large gallery both days to watch racing, but we can't have a meet without all those wonderful people that line judge, box, catch, set up and take down. We had one FTE on Saturday Niles who completed all four programs beautifully. We are happy for Georgia and Fred!

49 PDQ/WA Pretty report and photos by Kristy Thomas Darn Quick Whippet lub adgerland Whippet lub October 7/8, 2017 Milwaukee, WI Saturday match judge Scot Northern with #1 Leni, #2 Jackson, #3 Venus, #4 Marky Deuce won the meet to take 4 NARX back home to Minnesota, while Fender took second and earned 2 NARX points. The top set of 4 ARX points went to Levi, and the bottom set hinged on the results of the last race, in which olty turned it up and took his first 2 ARX points. In the show ring we had Scot Northern judging. Leni didn't put a foot down wrong and took a first place with Jackson, Venus, and Marky rounding out the top four. Venus was High ombined and got the DP leg. ongrats to Mary eth and Doug! Our bad news for the weekend was Pogue going out with a toe dislocation in the second program on Saturday. Hoping to see him back on the track next year, if not before! Sunday was a lovely day for racing. We couldn't have asked for better weather in October. In fact many folks had shorts on. Deuce swept the weekend picking up another 4 NARX

50 PDQ/WA Pretty report and photos by Kristy Thomas Darn Quick Whippet lub adgerland Whippet lub October 7/8, 2017 Milwaukee, WI Sunday match judge Kris enoit with #1 Leni, #2 Jackson, #3 olt, #4 Venus on Sunday, Story grabbed second place in the meet and with that earned 4 ARX and 2 NARX points! Way to go Story! The bottom set of 2 ARX went to Levi. He had a very good weekend! In the show ring, we had Kris enoit as our judge. Leni again took the blue ribbon home, followed by Jackson, olty, and Venus. Venus was once again High ombined, and olty got his third DP leg. We look forward to 2018 being even a better year for our clubs here in WI. We're hopeful that with many new people and whippets, we can continue to grow!

56 MAWRA Mid-Atlantic report and photos by Liz Aiello Whippet Racing Assn October 7/8, 2017 Pennsville, NJ Saturday began as a very warm and humid day for New Jersey in October. We started with 49 dogs (there was miscount on the race secretary s part, that would be me, and we originally thought we had 50), one puppy and two match racers. The ground was a bit hard, as it had not rained in a few days, and the bugs were out, but there was no sign of the resident black snake. Woodford (WildAbout Woodford ARX, PR2, NARX2) was the meet winner earning 6 NARX points. He is owned by Donna Miner, was bred by Annie Kelsey, and ended the day with a perfect score of 29. He is a smooth runner and wonderful to watch. Woodford makes judging the High Point easy, as we usually only have to worry about the other five dogs placements, since he is clearly out front. oming in second in the meet was Stella (Domino Ottowa Star RATI, RATN, J), who was top ARX point winner. She finished her ARX title and also received 4 NARX points. Stella is owned by Nancy and Dan Mcarel, was bred by Donna Miner, and finished her ARX in just three meets. apturing the last 2 NARX points and finishing third in the meet was Loon (MIF, Gh Domino lue Moon, S, ARX, RATI, TRP, DPX, PR6, SRA), who is just returning to the track after having a litter of puppies. Loon is the dam of Stella, who edged her mom out for her second place finish. Loon was bred and is owned by Donna Miner. Panther (Gh Deerpath Signature artier S), owned by Nancy Jorczak, was fourth in the meet, earning 4 ARX points, and putting her one point shy of her ARX title. One of the six FTEs entered was ega (Terrena s Queen Victoria omb, Fh), bred by Terri Deluca and Alena Tune, and owned by Victoria Gise. He received the last set of ARX points (2) by finishing sixth in the meet. It was a great start for ega, who is an experienced lure courser. Rounding out the Top Ten were: Revel (D Oxford s Revelstoke at Steamboat Rock ARX, DPX, PR), owned Saturday match judge Rebecca Gardner and #1 GRRace, #2 Apple, #3 Woodford, #4 rosby

57 MAWRA Mid-Atlantic report and photos by Liz Aiello Whippet Racing Assn October 7/8, 2017 Pennsville, NJ by Kristen Fredericks, in fifth place ; ega in sixth place (as previously mentioned); Ronan (ali s Ronan the Red of Saturn S, ARX), owned by owned by Mary and Ernest Pick and Deana McNamer, in seventh place; Vega (Terrena s Silver Lining, ARX, THD, PR2, TRP, R, G, RATI), owned by Julia, Holly and Anthony Solano, in eigth place; Sassy (Domino Saskatoon), owned by Donna Miner), in ninth place; and Echo (Deerpath Apricot Whirl S), owned by Nancy Jorczak, in tenth place. The match was judged by Rebecca Gardner of Will-O-Wisp Whippets and there were 28 dogs entered. First place in the match was GRRace (herche GRRace O Malley) owned by heki owman-mealey, second place was Apple (H Uh Mystic Run s Mink Luster S), owned by Annie Andrews, third place was Woodford (WildAbout Woodford ARX, PR2, NARX2), owned by Donna Miner, and fourth place was rosby (H Uh AgStone Wind on the Water), owned by harlene Stone. Our high combined for the day was Woodford! It was a great meet with only eight dogs scratching so we had 41 dogs complete the meet! As always, the hospitality spread was quite something. We always have enough food for both days! Everyone is so generous with either bringing something or donating to the food fund. Many thanks to Susan Fredericks, our hospitality chair, for all her hard work. Sunday brought some much needed rain very light in the morning with a few heavier periods during the day. We started the meet with 35 dogs and one puppy. As with our Saturday meet, the winner of the Sunday meet, earning 5 NARX points, was Woodford (WildAbout Woodford ARX, PR2, NARX2), owned by Donna Miner, with yet again another perfect score of 29. Following Woodford in second place was Loon (MIF, Gh Domino lue Moon, S, ARX, RATI, TRP, DPX, PR6, SRA), owned by Donna Miner, for 3 NARX points. Loon traded placements with Stella, beating her daughter on the second day. Stella (Domino Ottowa Star RATI, RATN, J), finished in third place, earned 1 NARX point. Finishing fourth in the meet was Vega (Terrena s Silver Lining, ARX, THD, PR2, TRP, R, G, RATI), owned by Julia, Anthony and Holly Solano, and bred by Terri Deluca and Alena Tune. Vega earned 5 ARX points which finished her ARX title! Fifth and sixth in the meet, respectively, were Revel (D Oxford s Revelstoke at Steamboat Rock ARX, DPX, PR), owned by Kristen Fredericks, and Ronan (ali s Ronan the Red of Saturn S, ARX), owned by Mary and Ernest Pick and Deana McNamer. India (H Mariner Diablesse ristol ombay of Surrey Hill) finished seventh in the meet earning her first 3

58 MAWRA Mid-Atlantic report and photos by Liz Aiello Whippet Racing Assn October 7/8, 2017 Pennsville, NJ Sunday match judge Sue Nichols and #1 Tanner, #2 ender, #3 Sassy, #4 Lynesse ARX points. India is owned by Karen Lee and Liz Aiello (me) and was bred by Karen Lee and Kristen Fredericks. The last ARX point on Sunday was split between the 8th, 9th and 10th place finishers: AJ (H Mariner s Moose Tracks at Surrey Hill RN Fh), owned by Deb Hanna: Lynesse (Panache We Light the Way at Diablesse), owned by Pat Spinazzola; and Sassy (Domino Saskatoon), owned by Donna Miner, each earned.333 ARX point! The Sunday match was much smaller than Saturday, with 14 entered, and was judged by Sue Nichols of Lightfall Whippets. The placements were: first place, Tanner (D Aperture Longleson Go Up the Plumcreek Fh, S), owned by Jean and huck rown; second place, ender (Mariner s Robot Monster at Surrey Hill), the puppy racer, owned by Karen Lee and Kristen Fredericks; third place, Sassy (Domino Saskatoon) and fourth place, Lynesse (Panache We Light the Way). The match placements set up for a tie for High ombined between Sassy, who came in third in the match and tenth in the meet, and Lynesse, who came in fourth in the match and ninth in the meet. Since this is a race meet and the race placement breaks the tie, the High ombined was awarded to Lynesse! A shout out to Anna Fredericks, our Trophy hair, who always makes sure we have a great prize selection to offer the winners. She does a great job picking items up here and there and many are unique. The people that typically show up for the MAWRA meets are a great group. We have people come with no dogs to run, or just one D dog to run, but come more to just help out. Without those people we could not hold a meet, especially the size of a meet like Saturday s. And so many of the group are always willing to line judge, walk dogs down the track, catch dogs and generally do whatever is needed to keep the meet moving. Thank you all!

67 AAW Alamo report and photos by Sami Hirko Area Whippet lub October 14/15, 2017 Alvin, TX In June the newest strain of canine influenza hit the Gulf coast with a vengeance. This highly contagious disease made its way into the kennels of many AAW members and in one case an afghan hound was lost. The AAW board quickly responded to its members in need with matching programs for inoculation and testing. Thus the Rohan program was initiated. To aide in fund-raising, AAW designated the October race meet as the Run Whippet, Run, for harity and Fun! event. How prophetic this would be when in August, Hurricane Harvey came into the gulf and devastated many communities. Again our AAW members were affected, with fences and roofs blown away and flooding. Our race track went underwater and landowners Lawrence and Angela ollins housed fellow flooded whippet owners in their barely dry home. September was weather watching at its most intense, and a sigh of relief when the wet left and dry came back. The meet was on and despite the heat (record setting), AAW members and guests came together mid-october to run, have fun and celebrate the blessing we have with our dogs after several months of self imposed quarantine and the weathering of the hurricane s worst. Twenty-three adults took to the track on Saturday. AAW welcomed the arnes family and their FTE ella Marie. ella got off to a shaky start but by the end of the weekend was running happily in the crowd. The heat was great for drying out the swamp surrounding the track, however it also took its toll on the humans, who opted for a three program day. The high point races were a mix up with Skywalker, Jedi and Mudbug all taking a win. Jedi was able to take the high set of NARX points with a meet win, and Mudbug came in second for the lower set. Skywalker was third in the meet, followed by Leia, Solo, and anks. rando was seventh in the meet for 4 ARX points which finished his title. Litter brother Finn Saturday match judge Natalie Amendola and #1 Remington, #2 Leia, #3 Mudbug, #4 Jillian

68 AAW Alamo report and photos by Sami Hirk Area Whippet lub October 14/15, 2017 Alvin, TX was behind him, and in ninth place was litter sister Jade who earned the lower set of 2 ARX points. AAW Vice President Natalie Amendola judged the match of six entrants, selecting Remington, Leia, Mudbug and Jillian. High combined for the meet was Mudbug. With the afternoon heat rising, most of the event goers took to local restaurants and relief from the heat in airconditioning. A few retired to the A/ in motorhomes for welcome siestas. Late night gathering to discuss the hurricane relief efforts and sharing the close encouter stories was the perfect end to the first day of racing. Sunday began with a dry wind and less humidity than the previous day. For those unfamiliar with the Gulf coast, there is heat and there is Heat Index. And for AAW race meets there is Lure Operator Melt Index. Sunday both the lure operator and the back-up declared LOMI and the meet was approved for three programs. With the most recent years having higher temps in October, AAW will look to move our fall meet to a later date in Despite the heat, 21 adults and two puppies started. Mudbug continued his winning ways with two high point race wins. Skywalker won the last high point and finished second in the meet for 2 NARX points behind Mudbug, who picked up 4 NARX points. The next finishers were Solo, Jedi, Leia, Finn and anks. Stormy in eighth place picked up the high set of 4 ARX points. Shooter was ninth for 2 ARX points. Puppy Obi ran undefeated with Kelli second. Jessica McHarg judged the match of six entrants, selecting the puppy Kelli as her best in match. Adult anks was second and earned the meet s high combined. Tres was third and Jillian fourth. Ending the race meet weekend and packing up, the meet was declared a success for several reasons. First, dogs and humans had survived the disasters relatively unscathed. Second, money was raised for several club endeavors, including the addition of new race boxes, and to further our goals of giving back to some of the hardest working racers in the country. And not least, AAW continues to have race meets significant for the cooperation and comaraderie that helps us endure whatever is thrown our way. Sunday match judge Jessica McHarg and #1 Kelli, #2 anks, #3 Tres, #4 Jillian

78 RFF Racing For Fun October 21/22, 2017 Abbotsford, report by Sheryl artel, photos by Allen argen It was the last race meet weekend of the year, and it was a weekend of typical fall weather in the Northwest! The last meet weekend of the year for Racing For Fun was held again at the wonderful field at Whatcom School in Abbotsford, ritish olumbia. The field there is in such great shape that not even a fall monsoon could turn it into a bog. We so appreciate the use of such a wonderful facility. On Saturday it rained and rained, monsoon-like. Thank goodness for the strong chain link fence around the field EZ-ups could be anchored from the wind and rain. There were a few brief rain reprieve, one in time for the fun match. Despite the dismal weather it was still a fun day full of great racing, great friends, great food, and lots of laughs. On Sunday the rain held off until match photo time. There were even a few sun breaks during the day. Once again a great day of racing, food and fun. A big congratulation to the Szabos and Gibson for a flawless performance to win both meets. Second place each day went to Sage, and third each day to Heidi. A big congratulations to Heather and jorn Wullum on Sage s new ARX! Saturday s top ten in the meet were Gibson, Sage, Heidi, Leonard, Phoenix, Finch, Mia, Iris, Athena, Portia. Saturday match judge Linda Johnston gave the win to Austin, piloted by owner eth Levine, and second to Finch, piloted by Jennifer Szabo for owner eth Levine. Third place went to Jewels, piloted by owner Emily Miller, and fourth to Hokum, piloted by his owner Mary Downing. Saturday match judge Linda Johnston and #1 Austin, #2 Finch, #3 Jewels, #4 Hokum
