Webinar on social media World Archery offered a webinar on utilising social media (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube) to market archery organisations and athletes most effectively during the 2013 season. The presentation, given on 16 January by Teresa IACONI, administrator of the USA Archery and World Archery social media, was attended by 38 persons from all over the world. This webinar gave all the latest insight on how to use Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms. This is the best time for federations and athletes to capitalise on the latest surges of popularity for archery, by engaging with fans on social media, and turning that interest into new members and competitors, as well as media attention and perhaps even sponsor dollars. A proper use of the social media can increase the following of federations or athletes by a significant percent. Among other possibilities, these tools allow to reach reporters, broadcast news of upcoming tournaments, share photos of archers, highlight the achievements of Olympians and Paralympians, or even reach potential sponsors with interesting content that demonstrates that archery is a growing sport. Please visit the organisers website for more information and to register: Para-Archery News from the Paralympic Committee Following the success of the Archery section of the Paralympic Games in London, 2013 will be another important year for Para-Archery. There are now at least three World Ranking or other registered tournaments prior to the World Para-Archery Championships to take place in Bangkok in November. To set the scene the Classification Ad Hoc Committee met for two days in Lausanne in mid-january and this was followed by a two-day meeting of the World Archery Para-Archery Committee. High on the agenda for the Classification Committee was consideration of the number and possible combination of points necessary to be classified. There was a concern that for some of the athletes competing in London their disability may not have significantly affected shooting a bow and arrow at the elite level. Every archer competing in the Paralympic Games in London was eligible under the current rules/points system. However, it was decided that the classification points system should be reviewed and this is now being undertaken by members of the Ad Hoc Committee. The other major items included interviews for the position of the Head of Classification for World Archery as the previous appointment ceased on 31 December 2012, the call for nominations for the other members positions of the Committee and nominations for the International Classifiers for the World Para-Archery Championships in Bangkok from 1-7 November. As there is to be a modified classification system beginning in 2014, the earlier requirement to have everyone re-classified before the World Para Championships this year will not now take place.

6 January 2013 World Archery Newsletter Page 6 The Para-Archery Committee received a report from the Classification Committee meeting, considered the lessons learned from London, particularly as they related to having a different venue to the Olympic archery tournament, matters to be completed for Rio 2016 including the sport classes (the different groups such as the W1 men and women with significant disabilities, W2 men and women who shoot from wheelchairs, and standing archers, also men and women), the number of medal events and the wider issues of which tournaments may be held for World Ranking Events. The Para-Archery Committee of four (4) members will be elected at the World Archery Congress in Antalya in late September. Nomination of new Head of Classification for the period PANG Kim-Fong from Singapore has been appointed by World Archery to succeed Pauline BETTERIDGE as head of classification following the process as published last year. World Archery would like to thank Pauline for the many hours of work she did as Head of Classification over the last 12 years and has asked Pauline to remain as consultant for the Ad Hoc Classification Committee. Pang has been chief classifier at the Beijing Paralympics and also has been a classifier in the London Paralympics. Many important decisions will be made in the coming months on the Classification and also the events for the Rio Paralympics and Pang will count on the cooperation of all existing International Classifiers to assist him in improving the current classification system. The participants learned how to set up and tune their equipment on their own. The 7 days of the camp took place in a sunny and warm Namibian weather, the archers practiced in the shade at some moment of the day since the temperature reached almost 40 C. The enthusiasm and efforts of the participants didn t stop them from training and their efforts paid off.
