Note: The Postcode Ranking cohort covers only earning songwriters or composers. The APRA membership data below includes all members (Australia and NZ), whether earning or not ,286 nominated themselves as Pop/ Rock songwriters or composers; ,746 nominated themselves as Alternative songwriters or composers; 15,360 nominated themselves as Blues & Roots songwriters or composers; 14,387 nominated themselves as Electronica songwriters or composers; 13,994 nominated themselves as Country songwriters or composers; 11,924 nominated themselves as Urban songwriters or composers; 10,318 nominated themselves as Dance/ Techno songwriters or composers; 10,273 nominated themselves as Jazz songwriters or composers; ,410 nominated themselves as Metal songwriters or composers; 8,059 nominated themselves as Folk songwriters or composers; 5,974 were identified by APRA as Screen songwriters or composers; 5,227 nominated themselves as Classical songwriters or composers; 5,130 nominated themselves as World songwriters or composers; 5,125 nominated themselves as New Age songwriters or composers; 3,957 nominated themselves as Gospel songwriters or composers, and 3,047 nominated themselves as Children s songwriters or composers. WHERE DO APRA SONGWRITERS CALL HOME? All Top 10 postcode areas/suburbs were metropolitan and all inner city, many in gentrified suburbs 1 Younger age groups dominated these postcode areas/suburbs: for the Top 10 the median age ranged from 32 to 37 (against Australia s median age of 37.3 years) All postcode areas/suburbs reflected a median house price at least $750,000 ALP held Federal seats in at least 7 of the Top 10 postcode areas/suburbs. ALP held State seats in 6 of the Top 10 postcode areas. 1 Even when including more postcode areas/suburbs and expanding to the Top 30 list, with the exception of three regional hot spots, the Top 30 list was also exclusively inner-city, (within a 13 km radius of a metropolitan CBD).

3 STATE BY STATE HIGHLIGHTS Victoria In the year Melbourne was lauded as one of the World s Most Musical Cities it is no surprise Victoria dominates the top songwriter rankings, claiming 15 berths in the APRA Top 30 Postcodes Rankings, all in Melbourne s inner city. The postcode with the highest number of incomeearning APRA songwriter members was again Brunswick in Melbourne s north west, followed by Northcote, with Coburg and Preston moving into a top 5 berth. When adding in Brunswick East (ranked 19 th, up from 28 th last year) this 4km enclave is a magnet for creative types. Rank Victoria Brunswick Northcote Coburg Preston Fitzroy North/Clifton Hill St Kilda Thornbury Fitzroy Richmond Elwood In terms of populations of earning World music songwriters Northcote and Brunswick also jumped over last year s winner Bondi (NSW) and Brunswick even took over Newtown/Enmore (NSW) winning the number 1 spot in the Metal genre. Jostling among themselves, Brunswick and Northcote took out nine of the 16 Number One spots by genre, up from seven wins the previous year. Across the Maribyrnong River, in terms songwriter growth (in absolute numbers) Footscray/ Seddon was the top suburb nationally - one to watch. Reservoir s songwriter growth was also strong, climbing 19 places to rank 28. Croydon, at the foot of the Dandenong Ranges, showed stronger attraction this year over last, with the 3 rd highest percentage growth. Eltham at the entrance to Melbourne s Yarra Valley was also a top ten songwriter growth hot spot. St Kilda East and Carlton North fell by 11 and 13 spots respectively to drop out of the Top 30 list both seeing an overall reduction in the number of earning songwriters in 2014 compared to Fitzroy North/Clifton Hill also witnessed an exodus of earning songwriters over the year.

4 NSW Coming in second despite its dominant population, NSW was home to many earning APRA songwriter members. The State recorded 13 postcode areas/ suburbs in the Top 30. As reflected nationally, NSW songwriters were largely based in their inner city capital, but only in this state did regional hot spots emerge. Newtown/Enmore has taken the overall number one spot from Bondi this year in NSW. Rank NSW Newtown/Enmore Bondi Marrickville Surry Hills/ Darlinghurst Lismore Leichhardt/Lilyfield Gosford Byron Bay Glebe/Forest Lodge Lewisham/Petersham Topping the regional hot spots, Lismore was in the middle of the Top 30 national rankings (at number 14). This City was still in 6 of the Top-10-by-Genre lists (from a high of 10 in the previous report). The Northern Rivers area was the biggest honeypot for writers outside a major metropolitan city. Gosford came in nationally at 18 th taking out the Number One Gospel spot from the home of Hill Song, Baulkham Hills. Byron Bay stormed from 26 th to 20 th this year, powered by New Age (think yoga, massage, meditation) and World genres. Iconic Bondi has slipped slightly in the national rankings to 6 th, but is still home to the most Screen composers and the most Urban songwriters, as well as strong representation from Electronica and Dance/Techno songwriters (2 nd in these two separate genres). Bondi also is a honeypot for songwriters from other genres World (3 rd ), Children s (4 th ), Pop/ Rock (5 th ), Jazz composers (6 th ) but less dominant in Blues & Roots (9 th ), New Age (8 th ) and Gospel (9 th ). Although Tamworth still featured in the Country genre Top 10, both Brunswick (Vic) and Preston (Vic) have leapfrogged it this year, seeing it drop from 2 nd to 4 th nationally. Northcote (Vic) maintains its number one position in the Country genre. Newtown/Enmore has jumped over Fitzroy North/Clifton Hill (Vic) and Bondi to take out Number 3 spot nationally. Newtown/Enmore also made the Number 3 spot in Pop/Rock and became the top NSW postcode in this genre. Nearby Camperdown aw the biggest Sydney growth of songwriters in percentage terms, 8 th nationally, while Marrickville ranked second nationally in terms of absolute growth terms during The Electronica genre has seen real growth in the Australian marketplace. In the last two years alone, APRA has seen the number of Electronica and Dance/Techno members grow by almost 50 per cent. Surry Hills/Darlinghurst rode this wave, jumping from Number 3 to Number 1 ahead of Bondi and Brunswick (Vic). The beach and city rivalry continued with Bondi dropping two of its number one wins this year and ending the year with the same number of Number 1s as Surry Hills/Darlinghurst.

5 Queensland The sunshine state s weather was not enough to convince songwriters to stay or relocate. Despite having a population not dissimilar to Victoria, Queensland only has two postcodes featuring in the Top 30 list this year: West End/South Brisbane/Highgate Hill and, over the river, Kelvin Grove/Red Hill. West End/South Brisbane/Highgate Hill now has 7 Top 10-by-Genre entries and the most non- Victorian and non-nsw entries. Another songwriter exodus was identified for Brisbane City, one of the largest drops (in absolute number) of earning writers between 2013 and Rank Queensland West End/South Brisbane/Highgate Hill Kelvin Grove/Red Hill Wilston/Enoggera/ Grange Cairns New Farm Stafford/Everton Park Milton/Paddington Nerang/Carrara Brookfield/Fig Tree Pocket/Kenmore Mansfield/Mt Gravatt/ Wishart In terms of percentage growth year on year three Queensland entries emerged: Cairns, Palm Beach/Elanora and Toowoomba. In fact, Toowoomba was the 4 th highest-growing postcode nationally. Burleigh Heads was also a top ten mover. Western Australia Big growth in songwriter numbers was seen by North Perth and Bibra Lake: Number 5 and Number 6 growth postcodes respectively.
