1 BLYTH TOWN COUNCIL Minutes of BLYTH TOWN COUNCIL S EVENTS COMMITTEE held in the Council Chamber, Arms Evertyne House, Quay Road, Blyth NE24 2AS on Tuesday 23 th June 2015 at 6.30pm. 2 172/15/01: APOLOGIES FOR ABSENCE Apologies for absence were received from the Town Clerk (Corporate Services), Councillor A Cartie, Councillor L Rickerby and Louise Hayward (Northumberland County Council). 173/15/02: DISCLOSURE OF INTERESTS AND ANY GRANTS OF DISPENSATION 174/15/03: MINUTES FROM EVENTS COMMITTEE MEETINGS HELD ON TUESDAY 28 APRIL 2015 AND TUESDAY 26 MAY 2015 The Minutes of the Meetings of the Events Committee held on the 28 th April 2015 and 26 th May 2015 were AGREED by the Committee and signed by the Chair. 175/15/04: MATTERS ARISING 176/15/05: PRESENTATION ON SEASONAL LIGHTING James Halewood from Blachere provided a PowerPoint presentation discussing possible outcomes and solutions for seasonal lighting within Blyth. It was noted that this presentation had arisen following conversations with the Town Clerk (Corporate Services) and was to focus on the Market Place and potentially the use of the fascia at the newly redeveloped Westgate House. Potential avenues discussed included webs of light via poles within the Market Place, animation within the trees and projections on to the front of the building. Costings and various funding methods were also discussed by the Committee and Blachere. The Events Co-ordinator commented that he is to meet with representatives of Northumberland County Council in the first week of July to inspect and ascertain the quality of the current Christmas lighting. It was AGREED that arising from this Meeting and presentation, an Agenda item is to be placed on the forthcoming Events Committee Agenda in order to agree a method to proceed. 3 177/15/06: PROGRAMME OF EVENTS The Events Co-ordinator provided an outline for this item. The outline noted the arrangements for each event and with regards to the Summer Fair/Maritime Event, a time line for the Sunday was also provided. It was noted that the focus of the events on the Quayside are to take place between 10am-2pm on the Sunday and that following the events, it is expected that there will be a drift back towards the attractions on the Town s Market Place. Discussion was then held as to the acts who are to perform during the Summer Fair/Maritime Event. The Events Co-ordinator commented that he was to forward on the running order to all Councillors, noting that there are to be a number of bands and that buskers are to be sited between the Market Place and the Quayside in order to provide a link between the two sites on the Sunday. Action: PT It was further noted that discussions have taken place between the Events Co-ordinator and the Port of Blyth with regards to potentially providing bunting for Bridge Street, which it was also envisaged would help to link the two sites on the Sunday. Discussion was then held as to Market Place arrangements for the Summer Fair weekend. It was noted that the Events Co-ordinator was to meet Terry Garnick and Pat Walsh on the 24 th June to ensure that arrangements are agreed in advance of the Fair. With regards to the Fireworks Event, the Events Co-ordinator commented that following discussions with ARCH, it had been confirmed that Blyth Town Council would be able to use the Blyth Workspace car park for the Event. Discussion was then held as to the implications for the Fireworks Event. Following such discussions, The Events Co-ordinator formally requested that the capacity for the Fireworks Event be increased to 18,000. This was AGREED by the Committee subject to appropriate Health and Safety checks. The Events Co-ordinator then initiated discussion regarding the Christmas Events, outlining that he was still awaiting a response regarding a star act for the Christmas Light Switch On Event. It was commented that he had also approached Leah Bell who would be able to provide an hour long show for the event. 4 Following discussion, it was AGREED to proceed with an hour long show provided by Leah Bell. Councillor J R Potts enquired with regards to the Summer Fair/Maritime Event as to whether there was to be any link with Blyth s new tall ship the Haabet. The Events Co-ordinator commented that Blyth Tall Ships are to host an open day on the 19 th July 2015 which will tie in to the Summer Fair/Maritime Event. 178/15/07: BLYTH OLYMPIC AND PARALYMPIC LEGACY 2015 The Chair, Councillor K Nisbet provided an outline for this item, noting the previous success of events organised by Aspire2Achieve and welcomed Alan Hoyle to provide a presentation. Alan Hoyle from Aspire2Achieve provided a brief presentation outlining the previous success of both his Olympic and Paralympic Legacy Events citing stories from participants and the parents of participants. It was noted that further sports are to be incorporated this year and that the events are scheduled to take place on Sunday 27 th September 2015 (Olympic Legacy) on Blyth Market Place and the Paralympic Legacy Event is to take place on the 20 th September 2015 at the Briardale Community Centre. Following the presentation, the Events Committee AGREED to support this Event with funding via Blyth Town Council s Olympic Legacy fund for the outlined cost of 4, /15/08: ANY OTHER BUSINESS OR ITEMS FOR URGENT ATTENTION 180/15/09: DATE OF NEXT MEETING It was AGREED that the next Meeting of the Events Committee is to take place on Tuesday 28 July 2015 at 6.30 pm.
