Beginning in 1963, the World Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships were held every two years. The event took place every year from 1991 to 1999 and beginning with the Olympic cycle, Worlds have been held every year with the exception of the Olympic years. Rhythmic Group competition was introduced at the World Championships in Copenhagen (DEN) in As a stand alone discipline, Rhythmic Gymnastics was included in the Olympic programme for the first time in 1984 in Los Angeles (USA). Group competition joined it in 1996 in Atlanta (USA). Part of the Youth Olympic Games, taking place every four years since 2010, are a four-apparatus all-around competition for individual gymnasts as well as a two-routines all-around competition for junior groups. Hoop The hoop has an inner diameter of 80 to 90 centimeters. It must weigh at least 300 grams. The hoop defines a space. It requires frequent grip changes and mainly a good coordination of movements to handle the hoop. The shape of the hoop leads to rolls, passages, rotations and other tricks as preferred elements. Ball The ball has a diameter of 18 to 20 centimeters. It must weigh at least 400 grams. The ball is the only apparatus where a hand grip is not allowed. Thus an emotional relationship between body and apparatus is required. The ball should move in perfect harmony with the human body. Clubs The clubs have a length of 40 to 50 centimeters from one end to the other. The gymnasts have two clubs, each of which weighs 150 grams. The gymnast uses the clubs to do mills, rolls, spins, throws and as many asymmetric elements as possible, combined with many elements from rhythmic gymnastics without apparatus (which exists only in young children s competitions). A routine with the clubs requires a highly developed sense of rhythm, a maximum psychomotor coordination and the preciseness of a clockwork. Clubs are particularly suitable for ambidextrous gymnasts. Ribbon The cane has a length of 50 to 60 centimeters including the ring to affix the ribbon. The ribbon itself is four to six centimeters wide and must be at least six meters long. It must consist of one single piece. The end of the ribbon which is attached to the handhold is doubled over a length of one meter. A very thin reinforcement of up to five centimeters can be pushed between the two parts of the apparatus. The ribbon is long and light and might be thrown in all directions. The task is to draw images into the space. The ribbon s flights through the air create images

5 MEDIA GUIDE WORLDS PRACTICAL INFORMATION 05 and shapes of all kinds. Many differently sized elements are executed in varying rhythms. Wavy lines, spirals and throws are typical for the handling of the ribbon. OLYMPIC QUALIFICATION RIO 2016 A country can qualify a maximum of two gymnasts in Individual competition and one Group in Group competition at the Olympic Games, for a total of seven gymnasts. All competitors must have been born before December 31, 2000 at midnight. There are two qualifying competitions for the 2016 Rio Games: The 2015 World Championships in Stuttgart (September 7 13, 2015) and the Olympic Games Test Event in Rio (April 22 24, 2016). Individuals and Groups will qualify based on the results of these two competitions. As host country of the Olympic Games, one Brazilian individual and a Brazilian Group will qualify for the Games, and a few other places will be reserved for gymnasts in order to achieve continental representation required by the International Olympic Committee. Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships in Stuttgart 15 places for the Individual Competition and 10 places for the Group Competition at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games will be attributed directly based on the results of this competition. These places are non-nominative, meaning National Federations have the right to name the gymnasts who will represent them at the Olympic Games. The top 15 individuals in the All-around final on Friday will obtain an Olympic berth for their countries. In the same way, the top eight Groups of the General Competition will also qualify. An additional two Olympic berths will be attributed to Groups, keeping in mind that a minimum of three continents must be represented among the 10 Groups who advance to the Olympics from the World Championships. In other words, if the top 10 Groups at the World Championships are all from European countries, the top eight will advance directly to the Games, while the 9th and 10th qualifying spots will go to the highest placing Groups hailing from Africa, the Americas, Asia or Oceania. Many of the gymnasts and Groups that do not qualify directly to the Olympic Games from the 2015 World Championships will have a second chance at the Olympic Games Test Event in April For the Groups, top seven nations not already qualified for the Games from the General Competition final of the 2015 World Championships will advance to the Test Event. There again, if not yet qualified, Brazil will be one of the seven nations. After the qualification round at the Test Event, the top six individual gymnasts and the best three Groups of those not already qualified for the Games will obtain a place at the Games. All participants at the Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships must be minimum 16 years old in the year of the event. RULES OF RHYTHMIC GYMNASTICS In General Penalties are issued when, for example, a gymnast loses control of an apparatus, it goes out of bounds, an unauthorised or broken apparatus is used or when it hits the ceiling. Communication between coach and gymnast or between gymnasts during an exercise is also sanctioned. Time In competition, individual gymnasts present four exercises corresponding to the four authorised apparatus. Groups present two exercises: the first with five identical apparatus, the second with two different apparatus three gymnasts with one apparatus and two gymnasts with another apparatus. With eurhythmy in mind, exercises are always set to music on a m mat. The duration of an exercise for individuals is from 1.15 to 1.30, while for Groups the duration goes up to 2.15 to An 0.05 point penalty is applied for every additional or missing second! Difficulty (D) Max points/4 judges. By addition: average of the two middle scores + two Reference Judges for World Championships/Olympic Games. Execution (E) Max points - Artistic faults - Technical faults Five judges + two Reference judges for World Championships/ Olympic Games. Final Score (D+E) points maximum By addition: D score of points maximum + E score of points maximum. For the individual competition, Test Event qualifiers are drawn from the qualification round (Monday till Thursday) of the Stuttgart World Championships. The top 23 nations that finished behind the 15 who initially advance to the Olympic Games will qualify to compete at the Test Event. These 23 will include one gymnast from Brazil, the Olympic host country, if a Brazilian competitor has not yet qualified to the Games.
