The winners were announced on 29 January 2016 during the World Archery gala 2015 in Las Vegas. Read more: IOC Statement Zika virus The International Olympic Committee Medical and Scientific Commission released a statement concerning the Zika virus. Since the first reported case in Brazil in May 2015, the Zika virus has infected an estimated 1.5 million people in the country with around 80 percent experiencing no symptoms and the rest experiencing symptoms for just two to seven days. There has been an increase in the number of babies born with microcephaly in Brazil and authorities are trying to determine if there is a connection. With this in mind, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is closely monitoring the situation with Zika in Brazil. We are also in close communication with the World Health Organisation and the Rio 2016 Organising Committee on this topic, reads the statement issued by the Medical and Scientific Commission, which is chaired by World Archery President Prof Dr Ugur Erdener. On its side, Rio 2016 is in regular contact with the Brazilian Ministry of Health and the Municipal Health Department, which are the responsible authorities on health issues in Brazil and in Rio. All parties are taking action to address this topic, and are following developments closely. The statement also confirms that there is a Games-time plan in place to minimise the impact of the virus and offers current international advice for people visiting areas with Zika. This includes the use of mosquito bite avoidance measures, advice from local health authorities, additional precautions for pregnant women or individuals planning to become pregnant. Read more:

2 January 2016 World Archery Newsletter Page 2 Court for Arbitration in Sport Statement on decision The Court for Arbitration in Sport issued a decision filed against a suspension recommended by the World Archery Board for Justice and Ethics. World Archery welcomes the decision of the Court for Arbitration in Sport in Lausanne on the appeal of Polish coach Mr Lach, which was filed against the decision of the Board of Justice to suspend him as consequence of inappropriate behaviour at an archery competition. World Archery is extremely satisfied that the Court for Arbitration in Sport confirmed that Mr Lach s behaviour did constitute a violation of the rules of World Archery and of the essential values of fair play and proper behaviour that these rules intend to protect. Despite a reduction of the length of the initial sanction, Mr Lach remains ineligible to be accredited in any capacity at World Archery events or at events of any Member Association (including the events of the Polish Federation) until 12 June Events Vegas 2016 Indoor World Cup Team USA collected five medals, including three of the four Indoor Archery World Cup Champion titles up for grabs, at the Final of the 2015/16 circuit in Las Vegas. Khatuna Lorig beat teammate Mackenzie Brown in the recurve women s final, and Jesse Broadwater overcame Reo Wilde in the second all-american gold medal match. Brady Ellison won his third indoor circuit title, to match his outdoor circuit tally, with a convincing win over Russia s Alexander Kozhin. The 27-year-old said he was looking to have [his] best season ever. Sarah Sonnischen won the compound women s competition. Read more: Nimes 2016 Indoor World Cup Italian recurve pair Guendalina Sartori and Luca Melotto upset the top seeds on the way to gold medals at the third stage of the Indoor Archery World Cup circuit. Linda Ochoa and Braden Gellenthien had the compound women s and men s titles, respectively. The biggest story of the weekend: Young Korean Park Sehui s new individual world record for the ranking round. The recurve woman beat Berengere Schuh s eight-year old mark, scoring 594 out of 600 for the 60-arrow qualification at 18 metres. Read more: Windhoek 2016 African Championships The African Archery Championships in Windhoek, Namibia acted as the continental qualification tournament for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. The top three archers, representing nations with no qualified places, took spots for their nations up to a maximum of one female and one male place. With the conclusion of the quarterfinals, the places were decided.

The previous recurve women s world record for the 60-arrow qualification at 18 metres was 592, held by Frenchwoman Berengere Schuh since the 2009 World Archery Europe Indoor Championships. Six years later it was finally broken. Aged 20, Park Sehui s 594 also increases the junior world record, which stood at 591. Read more:

4 January 2016 World Archery Newsletter Page 4 Development OS African training camp Rio 2016 preparation Thirty-three participants from 10 African countries attended the second edition of the World Archery/Olympic Solidarity Training Camp in preparation for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Under the expertise of World Archery Development and Education Director Pascal Colmaire and Marja Woortman from Namibia, the training camp gave the opportunity to the participating teams to reach their goals and for most realise their dream. The delegations were delighted by the programme and the experts noted a significant progress of the level among the participants which shows that the sport is growing. Gavin Sutherland who won an Olympic spot for Zimbabwe said: The Zimbabwean team feels that the training camp was not only a blessing but a huge success and has definitely helped us develop our archers skills especially with regards to form, mental training and ability to take home the knowledge learned. Membership Three countries have submitted their membership application files conformed to World Archery Rule 1.4.2: Virgin Islands Archery Association (UK), Sierra Leone Archery Association and Andorra Archery Association. According to Rule 1.4.3, the current World Archery member associations and members of the Executive Board have 60 days for raising in writing to the World Archery office any objections to these membership requests. Without any serious objection within these 60 days (until 31 March 2016), a temporary membership will be granted to these associations until the 2017 Congress in Mexico City where the final membership of these national archery associations will be submitted to a vote.
