DAILY UPDATE 25 JULY 2014 TEAM SA S MEDAL HUNT CONTINUES SPORT EVENT NAME GOLD SILVER BRONZE Judo Men s 66kg category Siyabulela Mabulu 1 Judo Men s 73kg Jacques van Zyl 1 Swimming 50m Butterfly Roland Schoeman 1 Swimming 50m Butterfly Chad le Clos 1 Swimming Men s 400m individual medley Sebastien Rousseau 1 Swimming 4x100 Freestyle Team SA 1 Triathlon Men s Individual Richard Murray 1 TOTAL 2 5 Four medals in pool as swimmers come to the party for Team SA By Gary Lemke Roland Schoeman picked up the 11th and 12th Commonwealth Games medals of his glittering career as he won two silvers in Glasgow on Friday night, one in the men s 50m butterfly and one in the 4x100m freestyle. Chad le Clos also earned two medals, a bronze in the 50m butterfly and a relay silver after leading off the quartet, which was eventually outswum only by Australia down the home stretch. Sebastien Rousseau chipped in to the growing medals tally with a fighting bronze in the 400m individual medley, after he had built up a considerable lead, before being

hunted down on the final lap by Scotland s Daniel Wallace, who surged home in 4:11.20, ahead of Australia s Thomas Fraser- Holmes. The night had been rounded off by the men s 4x100m freestyle team of Le Clos, Schoeman, Leigh Shankland and Craydon Muller, who swam out of their skins to put daylight between themselves and England, in third spot, after a rousing first two legs by Le Clos and Schoeman. Roland Schoeman in action There is the promise of more to come on Saturday from Cameron van der Burgh, the Olympic 100m breaststroke champion. He qualified comfortably and then proclaimed himself happy and not showing all his cards right now leading into the final. Before the evening s swimming programme, Team South Africa had nudged up to three bronze medals two from judo before Schoeman, Rousseau, Le Clos and the relay team pushed that tally to seven on a day the team claimed five medals. Eleven Commonwealth Games medals is something special, said Schoeman after swimming his fastest time in these championships in eight years, his 20.13sec being 0.01 quicker than the record time he set in Melbourne in He can now call that a round dozen.

If you told me a week ago that I d swim a 23.2 here I wouldn t have believed you, said Le Clos after he took bronze in 23.36, having timed in the semi- finals. Both South Africans were clearly elated. Ben Proud was just too fast on the night, and congratulations to him, said Schoeman after the Englishman stopped the clock in a Games record Both returned to the pool less than two hours later to help South Africa s 4x100m freestyle team in their medal cause. Le Clos still has his sights on a record seven medals in Glasgow. He already has two. This is a good start, although after the [butterfly] semi- finals I thought about it [gold] and it would also have given me the chance to get the triple [50, 100 and 200m] which hasn t been done before. On the night Proud was simply too quick. He led off in lane four, the meat in a South Africans sandwich and the order remained unchanged from the start. Proud got in front, being chased hard by Schoeman with Le Clos never looking like he would be able to get to the front two. Roland Schoeman and Chad le Clos celebrate their silver and bronze medals

Le Clos has come to Glasgow in terrific shape and looked a nailed on certainty to win the 100 and 200m butterfly, while he also has eyes on the 200m individual medley and three relays the first of which was Friday night s 4x100m freestyle. Van der Burgh too has looked relaxed. He dipped under the minute barrier in his semi- final, being touched off late by Scotland s Ross Murdoch (59.72) and then declared himself to be in shape to go under 59 seconds in the final. There might be a few high 58s, but I love the rush of finals, he added. Rousseau controlled the 400m IM from the start and held a commanding advantage after strong butterfly, backstroke and breaststroke legs, but he was raced out of it in the last lap by Wallace. I swam the race to win, but got caught in the last 50. The way I went out there is the way I swim. I look to take control of my races. The opposition was quality and I will learn from the experience. Daniel [Wallace] is my training partner in Florida and I ll be able to train with the Commonwealth Games champion for the next two years leading into Rio. Van Zyl s bronze medal makes it medal No1 for SA Judo By Mark Etheridge in Glasgow London 2012 Olympian Jacques van Zyl scooped a bronze medal in today s judo medal competitions. That s after the African champion lost his semi- final to New Zealand s Adrian Leat in the 73- kilogram category. He lost his crucial bout to the Kiwi they call Frodo and took on Northern Ireland s Eoin Fleming in the evening s two bronze medal fights. Summing up the fight coach Vintcent Redpath said: Jacques controlled the early stags and then the New Zealand guy started getting control of the upper body exchanges.

So Jacques backed off a bit and then received a shido (penalty). After he upped the tempo what happened was that he committed to much and the next thing he had lost on ippon after a counter. That s what happens in judo it just takes a split- second s loss of concentration. Earlier the West Rand athlete, our only judoka in action on Friday, had opened his Games campaign by beating his Papua New Guinea opponent in easy enough fashion. This, after the top seed had a bye in the opening round. His first fight was done and dusted in under a minute as he locked down Kinsley Vui in a bout- winning ippon hold- down. He then came up against Scotland s Patrick Dawson. Jacques van Zyl ecstatic over his win at the 2014 Commonwealth games The Scot had reached that bout by beating his English opponent in a bruising encounter that went into the Golden Score extra time period of play. Against Dawson there were some anxious faces in the SA camp as with 2min 30sec to fight Van Zyl had a shido against his name. Those fears were erased 20sec later when the scores were levelled. And with 1:18 left in the bout the critical moment came when Van Zyl suddenly came up with one

of the most basic throws in judo, an outside leg- hook that send the Scot sprawling and Van Zyl in to the next round. I told him to up the tempo, said coach Redpath. The Scottish guy was making it very difficult to get a grip he s a very good fighter. But the ippon came at exactly the right moment. A very difficult fight and it was good to get behind us. Highlights Cronje and Malgraff see Team SA pick up the points By Gary Lemke An inspired second half performance saw South Africa win their opening men s hockey pool match 2-0 against Scotland in the midday heat to get their Commonwealth Games campaign off to the perfect start on Friday. And Rassie Pieterse, marking his 100th Test, will also have enjoyed the fact that he kept a clean sheet, against opponents that he made his international debut back in The last time South Africa and Scotland met was earlier in July in the Investec Cup in London, when South Africa won the bronze medal by winning 3-0. For the first half on Friday, though, it was the hosts who enjoyed the better chances and they even thought they had gone 1-0 ahead in the 13th minute, although the scrambled goal was disallowed after South Africa reviewed it to the third umpire. Team SA Men s hockey team

In that first half Scotland proved hard to break down as South Africa patiently tried to spread the ball wide and then attack down the flanks but they struggled to create much out of very little. In the second half, however, the match took on a very different complexion. The Scots weren t helped when they received a yellow card in the 38th minute and while they were down to 10 men South Africa earned a penalty corner, and from the attempt the ball was deemed to have struck a defender while goalbound and Andrew Cronje calmly stepped up to convert the penalty flick. South Africa were looking the fitter, the more inventive and urgent, and coping with the 26 deg C heat better than the hosts. The Flowers of Scotland were wilting in front of a partisan home crowd s eyes. The Scots earned their only penalty corner of the match in the 56th minute South Africa had already tallied five of them but had squandered four and only came back into the game in the last 10 minutes as the crowd tried to loft them. However, any hopes of snatching a draw were dashed when Ignatius Malgraff popped up late to seal the victory. Their next match is one of the biggest challenges in the world game: Australia on Monday. By Jessica Choga Netball They may have taken a while to warm up but after four quarters the South African netball team were a lot closer to firing on all cylinders in their opening match against Trinidad & Tobago on Friday, as they triumphed Gymnastics Rhythmic Grace Legote and Aimee van Rooyen placed 10 th and 15 th positions respectively in overall. Legote will be competing in two more finals tomorrow.

On another note Commonwealth African nations rally behind SA for the 2022 bid South Africa hosted a special lunch for Commonwealth African countries to seek their support in the rainbow nation s 2022 Commonwealth bid at Ekhaya. Says Namibia National Olympic Committee President, Mrs Agnes Tjongarero, "We need to bid along with SA. All the 17 African countries here should pick a country and try and convince them to vote for SA. It s time for Africa to host the games, she added. African leaders support SA to bid for Commonwealth 2 Games in 2022
