4 Bandla gets boxing off to a winning start in Brazzaville By Mark Etheridge Sibusiso Bandla landed the first blows of Team South Africa s boxing campaign here at the African Games on Tuesday. The little Eastern Cape athlete was fighting in the light- flyweight division (49kg) and came up against Ghana s Sulemann Teteh in the first of the afternoon programme s fights. And when it all ended three rounds later, it was the red gloves of Bandla that were raised in victory centre- ring. Judges saw a unanimous 3-0 points decision go 22- year- old Bandla s way and the boxing code s bid for medals is up and running. The first round saw a cautious Bandla staying away from his stockier opponent but making sure his long- range shots were to good effect. As the fight went on he came more into his own and by the final round there was even time for some show- boating as he made the Ghanaian miss repeatedly.

5 It was our plan to mainly counter punch the first round, said manager/coach Johan Prinsloo, who was also with Team SA at last year s Commonwealth Games in Scotland. The second round we decided to stay on the counter but throw in a few - 2 combinations. That worked well so we stuck to that for the third round as well. I m happy with the way he fought and it s a good start. The powerful team won more than 0 medals for the second day running to take the team s medal tally past the 50 mark. Marlies Ross and Karin Prinsloo Seven events were held at the Complexe Nautique and when the evening was done SA swimmers had banked seven gold, two silver and four bronze medals for a total of 3 medals, there best haul of the Games so far.

6 After Olympian Karin Prinsloo had got the evening off to a good start with gold in the 400m freestyle (4:8.86) it was up to Clayton Jimmie who won the first men s gold when he won the 00 freestyle. Twenty- year- old Jimmie is swimming around four events at these Games before heading back home to Sherwood, Durban to continue with his B. Com law course at Varsity College. There was a break for SA celebrations as Zimbabwean Olympian Kirsty Coventry won the 00 back in.0.5 from Prinsloo (.02.53) and Cape Town s Jessica Ashley- Cooper took bronze in : Like Chad le Clos and Chad Ho, Jimmie is a Westville Boys High product and clocked to just pip Mohamed Samy of Egypt by 0.04sec. It wasn t a personal best but just 0.0sec off, said the Graham Hill- coached Durbanite. My PB came in South Korea earlier this year in the World Student Games. the pool felt very fast and I m happy. But it was soon back to business as Martin Binedell won the 200 back in 2:02.23 from teammate Ricky Ellis (2:02.32). 7 Then it was Le Clos s turn to take to the water and there was more gold as he won the 50m backstroke in 23.5 with Alard Basson bagging bronze in Le Clos time was also a Championship record, bettering Kenyan Jason Dunford s in Maputo, Mozambique four years ago. That left just the relays on the evening s programme and it was once again an all South African affair. The women s 4x00m relay saw Marlies Ross, Ashley- Cooper, Vanessa Mohr and Prinsloo in action. And although Egypt had a slight lead after the first leg, the next two girls put SA into the lead and it was left to Prinsloo to finish things when she touched in 3: That was another Championship record for SA, bettering the time of 3:52.74 set by the SA quartet in Abuja, Nigeria back in Final event of the evening was the men s 4x200m freestyle relay and like the girls race, the Egyptians got off to a good start and when Brent Szurdoki touched SA were lying third. But Jimmie and Myles Brown then combined to give Le Clos a slight lead going into the final two laps. Him and his Egyptian opponent were pretty much all square till the final turn and coach Hill then turned to the team and said: Watch this turn! And so it proved to be as Le Clos surfaced what looked close to a metre ahead of his rival and powered away to win in 3:49.04, with Egypt well beaten in 3: Other SA medallists on the night were: Ross (3rd, 400m free, 4:9.43) and Clayton Muller (3rd, 00 free, 50.28). Karate bags three medals Congratulations to the Karate team for adding three medals to our medal tally. Meghan Booyens and Sandile Makwali obtained two silver medals in the female Kumite 68kg and Male Kumite 75kg categories respectively. Silvio Cerone- Biagioni, Marius Magdwick and Stef Biagioni won a bronze medal in the male unison kata.

8 Sandile Makwali in action Our karate team displayed great performances at Kintele where the crowds from different countries gathered under one roof to support competitors from their respective countries. SASCOC honours Team SA 205 African Games medallists SASCOC honoured South Africa s medallists up until this stage of the African Games at an exclusive dinner on Tuesday evening. This was in order to recognise their achievements and acknowledge their efforts in flying the South African flag high as far as sport is concerned, reports Jessica Choga., Fencing, Badminton and medallists were honoured as some of these codes start heading back home on Wednesday. Ezera Tshabangu, the team s Chef de Mission, thanked the team for doing the country proud and for winning so many medals. She also commended the athletes for maintaining their disciplines and patience during their stay in Brazzaville, Congo.

9 Added the acting Ambassador of South Africa in Congo, Mr. Makuya, I am impressed with Team SA s performances so far. When you leave Congo the people will surely all be able to sing the South African national anthem. I hope this is not the end. South Africa is hosting the 2022 Commonwealth Games and as hosts we need a very strong team, and we will be behind you all the way, Makuya concluded. SASCOC Board Member, Jerry Segwaba also reiterated and acknowledged the athletes good performances, Well done to all our athletes we have done well and hope we continue adding more medals to the medal tally. He concluded by reading out the medals that South Africa has won so far. Athletes were served with a delicious dinner, and interacted with each other in a relaxed environment. Day seven of the games has ended on a good note and we embrace day eight and more competition days ahead of us.
