5 The 2018 Global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) was released on September 20, It was released by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI). Key Highlights The 2018 report provides data for 105 countries covering almost 75 percent of the world s population. The most glaring highlight of the report is that Half of all people living in poverty are younger than 18 years old. Some 1.3 billion people live in multidimensional poverty, which is almost a quarter of the population of the 104 countries. The poverty rate in India has nearly halved, falling from 55 percent to 28 percent over the ten-year period ( to ). Almost 271 million moved out of poverty.

About MPI MPI was launched in 2010 replacing the erstwhile Human Poverty Index. It complements traditional incomebased poverty. It assesses poverty at the individual level.

14 Tamil Nadu government on September 21, 2018 announced a novel scheme for the protection of the exotic Neela kurinji (Strobilanthus kunthianus) plants. The tropical Neelakurinji plants are native to the Western Ghats, especially the Nilgiris, has a 12- year flowering cycle. Munnar in Kerala has the largest concentration of Neelakurunji in India. Out of about 450 species of Strobilanthes in the world, 146 are found in India and of them, about 46, in Munnar. The Kurinjimala Sanctuary was declared in 2006 by the Kerala government for protecting the neelakurinji and its habitat.
