2 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Mary Davis, CEO, Special Olympics Inc, visited India from to gain a firsthand comprehensive experience of implementation of the Special Olympics Bharat Program The visit began with meeting up with the State Area Directors to comprehend execution of the program in cities and districts along with interacting with stakeholders like the Youth leaders& School and college communities, Athletes, families, and people from the Media, Medical& Corporate world One of the primary goals of her visit was to witness the launch of a National partnership shared between Special Olympics Bharat and Lions Clubs International Mission Inclusion: Bharat, a commitment made by Mrs. Aruna Oswal, through the Aruna Abhey Oswal Trust, to create an inclusive development platform across India to benefit children and adults with intellectual disabilities, their families and their communities. Ms Davis visited schools witnessing the Special Olympics programs traversing diverse settings, including a school in the rural regions of Mathura, UP, a Government supported school in Delhi and an elite school in Gurgaon. Her visit to the Taj Mahal at Agra walked her through the unusual experience of the rich history and heritage of India During her visit she was accompanied with Mr David Evangelista, Mr Simon Koh and Mr Dipak Natali from SOI/SOAP 2

The audience of 160 persons included those who continue to work closely with SO Bharat along with the State Area directors- Youth leaders and School and College Communities, Clinical Directors, Media persons, Corporate supporters. Through Presentations the National Office representatives, Mr Victor Vaz (National Sports Director) and Ms Mukta Narain Thind (National Director- Organization Development) communicated conjunction of the National program with the SO global strategy The Regional Directors of the three Indian regions, namely, North & Central, East and North East and South and West presented progress of their respective regions India is one of our greatest programmes around the world and the strongest on the planet, and it s continually growing. Seeing some of the regions in the country astounds me as they are doing an astonishing amount of work even though they are operating on a shoestring. It is down to the level of commitment that the volunteers have shown - their dedication to the work that they do, expecting nothing in return, is also something that most of our programmes can learn from India - Mary Davis 3

4 In the presence of Mary Davis, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the National trust and SO Bharat synergising endeavours of both entities in moving towards an Inclusive India. Initiatives such as youth leadership, healthy athletes and unified sports will be part of the events organized by National Trust to provide visibility & support to Special Olympics Bharat along with Awareness drives including Marathon /Walkathon which have already commenced under the initiative. 5 Certificate of recognition signed by Ms Mary Davis were presented to a selected group from diverse areas, who have journeyed through the growth of the movement in India with their inspiring and meaningful support Day Two- Monday 21 August 2017 At Aanchal Special School The Young Athletes Program and Healthy Athletes Health Promotion screenings were conducted at the Aanchal Special School, ChanakyaPuri Delhi. 60 Athletes participated in the Young Athletes program foundational and walking skills organized at the school utilizing the facilities available there along with the Special Olympics Young Athletes kit with assistance of 40 volunteers including 10 Coaches 5

6 The Healthy Athletes Program screened 100 Athletes conducting the Health Promotion discipline with overall supervision of Dr Veenu Seth, Clinical Regional Advisor with the assistance of 30 Clinical and 10 Volunteers 6

7 Launch of Mission Inclusion: Bharat by Lions Clubs International Presented by the Aruna Abhey Oswal Trust The launch of Mission Inclusion: Bharat, between Special Olympics Bharat and Lions Clubs International was held at the Taj Palace, Sardar Patel Marg, New Delhi in the presence of 150 Special Olympics Athletes, Coaches, Family Members, dignitaries from Lions Clubs International, esteemed Govt officials and representatives of Special Olympics Inc and Special Olympics Bharat. The program was anchored by Neha Naik, the International Global Messenger and Mr David Evangelista from Special Olympics. Neha took the opportunity to share her journey through SO At first I was studying in a normal school but then I had to go to a special school as I was unable to cope with the studies. My parents were not happy and they were hiding it from everyone. Then I took part in Special Olympics and won many medals. It made them very happy. Special Olympics made me independent and confident. I felt very important- Neha Naik, IGM- SO Bharat and presently a Digital Marketing Executive 7

8 The event commenced with a Unified Dance performed by the students of Scottish High International School, Gurgaon The launch was covered by media persons who also held exclusive interviews with the dignitaries from LCI, SO Inc and SO Bharat. With the depth of Lions and Oswal Trust commitment to humanity,synerged with Special Olympics - the largest movement in the world for People with intellectual disabilities, this country has stepped on the road to true inclusion. Through Mission: Inclusion, and under the guidance and support of the Aruna Abhey Oswal Trust and Lions Clubs International Foundation, we have the chance to amplify the voice of our athletes, and bring this urgent message to the world. 8

9 The project highlights commitment of Mrs Aruna Oswal, founder of the Aruna Abhey Oswal Trust, and International Director of Lions Clubs International, to provide increased opportunities for Lions Clubs volunteers and their youth network, Leos, to serve marginalized communities throughout the country. The $1,000,000USD commitment spread over a 3 year term would bring service, support and inclusive programs for individuals with intellectual disabilities in India while expanding to the SAARC Nations (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) Mrs. Aruna Oswal, International Director of Lions Clubs International and Founder of the Aruna Abhey Oswal Trust, stands steadfast in her commitment for a fully inclusive India :We stand by special athletes through the Mission: Inclusion national platform. We support the efforts of empowering these athletes to become confident and dignified members of our community. The inclusive sports program, Unified Sports, must be encouraged for cultivating sensitivity, acceptance, unity and bravery among our youth, said Mrs. Oswal. 11 Day Three- Tuesday 22 August 2017 The day started with an early morning trip to the Taj Mahal, Agra followed by a visit to the Primary School Chandar Nagar, Mathura UP At the Taj Mahal Agra Mathura, UP The school welcomed her with a few performances by the students there along with a brief walk through implementation of the Young Athletes program using indigenously created kit. The kit is made out of available resources replicating the original, thereby enabling sustainability and expansion of the program; for example use of cycle tyres for creating the tunnel etc 11

13 Day Four- Wednesday 23 August 2017 A Close interaction with the youth leaders at the Scottish High International School Gurgaon was the highlight of the fourth day. Being received at the school by a guard of honour, a selected entourage accompanied Ms Mary Davis to an exhibition of Special Olympics, prepared and presented by the youth leaders 13

16 Ms Mary Davis: I am overwhelmed by the experience; to be in the presence of Air Marshal Keelor and Dr Saini, to meet the Area Directors and to follow what they are doing at city schools and to be able to visit a rural school, to experience the energy and vibrancy everywhere.
