4 Welcome Message from the President of the Swiss Gymnastics Federation (FSG) The Swiss Gymnastics Federation is delighted! Enthusiasm, pleasure at being on the move and the joy of life are the main characteristics of the Gymnaestrada. The Swiss Gymnastics Federation (FSG) is very happy to welcome the international family of gymnastics once again in Switzerland (after Basle in 1969 and Zurich in 1982), on the occasion of the 14 th World Gymnaestrada. This will take place in the Olympic city of Lausanne, situated on the magnificent Lake of Geneva, with its many parks, surrounded by forests and mountains with views of the Alps. We extend a warm welcome to gymnastics fans from all over the world and wish them a great stay in our country, in the heart of Europe. The OC and the FSG will offer everyone an unforgettable and exciting Gymnaestrada. As Switzerland s largest sporting federation, we attach the greatest importance to mass sports, of which the Gymnaestrada is an important offshoot. We are looking forward to this week in July 2011, during which we will live moments that will be magic, fantastic, joyful and simply magnificent. 5 Message from the President of the World Gymnaestrada Association Lausanne 2011 The countdown has started for the 14 th Gymnaestrada, which will take place in Lausanne in The various stages have all been successfully negotiated since 1999, the date when passionate gymnasts had the idea of proposing Lausanne s candidature for this magnificent sporting event which brings together more than athletes every four years. Officially designated in 2006, Lausanne, Olympic capital, is organizing itself in order to be ready for this event. As you all know, gymnastics has pride of place in Lausanne. Not only are we the largest sporting body in the country but the successful staging of both European and World Championships have show cased our sport in 1990, 1997 and more recently this year leaving many memorable images with the Lausanne community. In addition, especially, as the European Gymnastics Union s lead, the International Federation has recently chosen Lausanne for its headquarters. All the ingredients have come together to ensure a success in 2011, a new challenge tested and embraced by Switzerland s fifth city, which is now eagerly anticipating this unique event. It is this city, ever welcoming, that we want to help you discover on this occasion. It all began with a small group, passionate about gymnastics and enthusiastic participants of the Gymnaestrada, who wished to contribute in other ways to this very unique world event. Today, there is an organising committee bringing together nearly 80 people motivated by a common goal: to organise a magnificent Gymnaestrada, with the same respect that marked all the previous editions, by having the local population participate and combining innovative elements at different levels of the event. Which ones? We invite you to discover them during the course of these next three years. For a small preview, let s meet on page 12! Tomorrow, there is a unique opportunity to show your talents, your traditions, to live an unforgettable experience, where respect, openness, conviviality, friendship, creativity and innovation are the central values. Lausanne 2011? A warm welcome to come and create, taste and live all the magic engendered by this extraordinary gymnastics festival, the Gymnaestrada! Lausanne 2011? A whole city, a canton, a country of gymnasts united behind the same project symbolised by one slogan : Lausanne 2011 or Meet the Magic! Because for us, the Gymnaestrada is made up of two central elements : Meeting and sharing Because Gymnaestrada is first and foremost a formidable gathering of people from all walks of life. We want to protect and acknowledge this wealth in the same way that our predecessors did. The magic of colours, movement, music and gymnastics Because our common goal is to awaken the child within each participant, each spectator, and his/her wonder and admiration for the fantastic gymnastic performances from the four corners of the globe. 6

8 LAUSANNE Switzerland, a small country nestled in the heart of Europe, is known for its mountains, its watches, its cheese and chocolate. Gymnastics? Is also a real tradition in Switzerland! Almost 400,000 people are members of the Swiss Gymnastics Federation (FSG), which makes it the biggest polysports association in the country. Many of its gymnasts participate enthusiastically at the Gymnaestrada. London Hamburg Stockholm Today it has the honour of hosting this event for the first time in its French-speaking region, specifically in Lausanne, a city that lives for sport and gymnastics. You can judge for yourselves! Paris Frankfurt Lausanne Prague Wien Recognised as the Olympic Capital, Lausanne is proud to host the headquarters of the International Olympic Committee since Also as administrative capital of world sport, Lausanne hosts around twenty of the international sporting federations, including the European Gymnastics Union (UEG) and quite recently The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG), as well as many institutions associated with sport, such as the Court of Arbitration for Sport, the World Anti-doping Agency and the International House of Sport. Lausanne has built a solid reputation as organizer of sporting events. As a result, there have been no less than twenty European or World championships organised here between 1988 and 2008: Madrid Barcelona Milano Roma We can mention among others: In 1990 : Men s Artistic Gymnastics European Championships In 1997 : Artistic Gymnastics World Championships In 2008 : Men s Artistic Gymnastics European Championships In addition, the repeated annual success of the Lausanne 20 km, Lausanne Bicycle Day, and the International Beach Volley Tournament are proof of the city s professionalism in the organisation of large scale sporting occasions. 8

9 It is a city open to the world and offers many amusements Overlooking the Lake of Geneva, opposite the Alps, set among the vineyards of the areas of la Côte and Lavaux, Lausanne is a charming city to visit. Recognised as one of Europe s greenest cities, thanks to its many parks, gardens and woodlands, it inspires a feeling of calm and peace in those who visit and live there. In a more than privileged situation, this small metropolis of human dimensions offers all the advantages of a big city. With a population of 125,000 inhabitants, at the heart of an agglomeration of 25,000, Lausanne is Switzerland s fifth largest city. A town with a great tradition as a host, it counts some 5,000 hotel beds of all categories and a top rate services infrastructure (banks, insurance companies, international organizations), a vast choice of boutiques and shops, large restaurants and small friendly bistros, a university, a technical college, professional colleges, an opera, theatres, some twenty museums, youth hostels, discotheques, over 300 clubs and sporting associations and a programme of cultural and recreational events which do not leave a free moment to anyone who likes to go out In summary, a city of leisure, education, culture, business, conferences and treatment, where everyone can do what he/she wants, according to his/her tastes and budget. Lausanne also constitutes an idyllic home base for visiting Switzerland s most famous tourist spots, such as Montreux, Chillon Castle, the Matterhorn or even Lucern! 10 Arriving Lausanne situated at the heart of Europe is easily accessible by air, rail and road. By Air Switzerland has three major airports International airport of Geneva-Cointrin Situated 60km from Lausanne, is serviced by the main international airline companies and over 8 million passengers pass through each year. It offers a network of direct flights to around 100 destinations. Geneva Airport has the advantage of a railway link within its complex, which offers three trains per hour to Lausanne. Geneva LAUSANNE Basel Zurich Duration of the journey Geneva Airport Lausanne : by car : 40 min by train : 43 min International airport of Zurich-Kloten Situated 200km from Lausanne, Zurich airport constitutes a point of arrival or transit for all the big international airline companies. It is also serviced by a railway station within its complex and 2 trains per hour connect it with Lausanne. Duration of the journey Zurich Airport Lausanne : by car : 2h25 by train : 2h45 EuroAirport of Bâle-Mulhouse-Fribourg Situated 210km from Lausanne, the EuroAirport is smaller. It is nevertheless serviced by known/ regular/reliable companies from some 60 cities. It is situated on the western side of Basel, on French territory. A 15 minute ride on the No 50 bus connects the airport to Basel railway station, from which there are 2 trains per hour to Lausanne. 11 By train Many trains connecting with the European high-speed rail network stop at Lausanne s CFF railway station. The latter is situated in the centre of the city and close to all the sporting venues. There are several TGV connections each day to Paris (550km) to Lausanne and via the Cisalpino to Milan (330km). There is also a direct connection to Barcelona via the Pau Casals, whilst the ICE connects Frankfurt and Stuttgart (440km) to Lausanne via Basel and Zurich respectively. The Swiss motorways connect the country s biggest cities, including Lausanne. Indeed, Lausanne is situated at the crossroads of two major hubs: Lyon Geneva Aosta Turin/Milan and Basel/Zurich Bern Lausanne. The purchase of the CHF 40.- sticker is obligatory in order to be able to use the Swiss motorways and semi-motorways. It is valid for 14 months (from 1 December to 31 January) and is on sale at customs offices, post offices, police stations or service stations. 12 DEMONSTRATION SITES The demonstration sites reserved for the 14 th World Gymnaestrada offer the following advantages: Their proximity: the demonstration sites selected for the event are situated within a radius of 4 km of each other. In addition, they will be easily accessible both by normal public transport and by special transport organised for the occasion. Their modernity: All are also regularly used for major national and international events such as Athletissima (an annual international athletics meeting). Their adaptability for gymnastics: Beaulieu Lausanne (Group Perfomances) as well as the Malley Sports Centre (National Evenings and FIG Gala) have already hosted gymnastics in the past. Whilst some refurbishing is necessary, the success of past events proves that these two sites correspond with the specific requirements of gymnastics. Their accessibility for disabled persons: Having hosted the Special Olympics event in 2002, Lausanne has the infrastructure that enables it to welcome persons with limited mobility. 13 Beaulieu Lausanne Group Performances Educational Forum Restaurant for the gymnasts The Federations stands Office of the Organising Committee Office of the FIG Press centre The heart of the 2011 Gymnaestrada, will be the Congress and Exhibition Centre of Beaulieu. A unique setting, situated in the centre of Lausanne and with all the necessary infrastructure for the successful running of such an event. The Educational Forum and the Group Performances take place here. These will have eight beautiful surfaces, each one provided with a control area and an adjacent warm-up room. Six halls will provide a usable area of aproximate 20m x 20m and will be able to hold 1,200 people in each of the South Halls and 1,500 in the North Halls. Hall 7, will provide a surface of 20m x 40m and 2,000 places are guaranteed. Finally, and this will be the first time at a Gymnaestrada, certain performances will take place at the magnificent Beaulieu Theatre. The stage (14m x 14m) will attract the smallest of the groups and spectators will enjoy the comfort of the room, entirely furnished in red velvet. Between two performances, gymnasts and spectators will be able to relax and enjoy the green parklands in the heart of the complex. Theatre Hall 7 North Halls There will also be catering facilities set up for the use of participants, the federations stands, the training forum, the offices of the Organising Committee and of the FIG as well as the centre reserved for the press. 14 Pontaise Olympic Stadium Opening Ceremony Closing Ceremony Large Group Performances The Opening and Closing Ceremonies as well as Large Group Performances will take place in the Pontaise Olympic Stadium. Thanks to some changes, during the Gymnaestrada, the stadium will be able to accommodate 25,000 people, compared with its present capacity of 15,850 places. The proximity of the Beaulieu Lausanne complex, about 8 minutes walking distance, will enable the participants in Large Group Performances to go there for their midday meal and offer spectators the freedom of enjoying both indoor and outdoor performances. The surroundings of the stadium provide optimum conditions for the gymnasts to get ready for the procession of the Opening Ceremony and for the Large Group Performances. 14

15 Malley Sports Centre National Evenings FIG Gala The National Evenings and the prestigious International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) Gala will take place at the Malley Sports Centre, which is 10 minutes from Beaulieu Lausanne by public transport. The two skating rinks will be converted into demonstration halls with an area of 20m x 40m. The main one will have 5,000 seats and the second one 2,000. A quality technical infrastructure will be installed (lighting, sound and equipment). The new layout will allow spectators to appreciate the quality of the demonstrations and the gymnasts to feel closer to the public. In this way, they will have the possibility of fully transmitting their passion for gymnastics. This festive, convivial atmosphere will continue after the productions have ended. One of the Gymnaestrada Villages will be set up within the Malley Sports Centre, and so enable everyone to stay on for a musical evening. Every evening, the party is on at Malley. 16 City Performances Group Performances Groups will also be given the chance to perform in the city centre of Lausanne and on the shores of the Lake. Several stages will be available to encourage contact between the gymnasts and the population. These will be located at busy points and will have all the necessary infrastructure to enable the gymnasts to enjoy the best conditions and the passers-by to appreciate the performances on display. 16
