3 Media book ABOUT THE 19 TH WORLD 1 FESTIVAL OF YOUTH AND STUDENTS The 19th World Festival of Youth and Students is a major event in the area of international youth relations and will gather over 20,000 young people from more than 180 countries. While holding up the traditions of the festival movement, WFYS 2017 is opening up a new stage in international cooperation, uniting future generations around the ideas of peace and friendship! WFYS 2017 is a platform for dialogue, a global form of communication through discussion, a cultural programme and sports tournaments, and an opportunity to find solutions to the challenges currently faced by the younger generation by way of free communication. The Festival will produce a vision of the future developed by young people from everywhere on Earth, for it is their decisions that will determine the future of countries, regions and the entire world. This Festival of the global youth community will bring together young leaders from different spheres: NGO activists, prominent young scientists, artists, athletes, teachers, IT engineers and politicians, the best representatives of student communities, fellow countrymen and foreigners. Russia has already hosted the Festival twice in 1957 and The 6th World Festival of Youth and Students (1957) was the largest in the entire history of the movement, attended by over 34,000 young people from more than 100 countries. This year is the first time that the core events of the Festival are being held not in the capital but by engaging the entire country in this grand celebration. Sochi Olympic Park will host the core events of the Festival. WFYS 2017 will start with an International Carnival Parade on 14 October in Moscow. In addition, 2,000 foreign participants will visit 15 Russian regions from Vladivostok to Kaliningrad. Along with Sochi, scientific, educational, discussion, cultural, and sports events will be hosted by other cities as part of the Festival Regional Programme on October. A volunteer corps will help organise this major youth event of the year. #WorldVolunteers consists of 5,000 people aged 18+ from Russia and abroad, including silver volunteers. In line with the long-standing traditions of the festival movement, each day of the Festival will be dedicated to a certain macro-region of the planet: 3
4 Media book the Americas, the Middle East, Asia and Australasia, Europe and Russia. The discussion programme will build upon the following topics: The Future of Science and Global Education, Design the Future: Architecture and Design, Technologies of the Future, Environment and Health, International Cultural Space, Aviation of the Future, Global Politics, Their Agenda, and How to Protect International Peace, Industry of the Future, Economy and Development for the Future, The Global Railway: Bringing the Future Closer, The New Media (Youth Media Centre), Civil Development Platform. Leaders of major international industrial companies, public, political, and youth organisations, business executives, and other experts will be among the Festival speakers. Intense cultural and sports programmes will make the Festival a truly spectacular event. Young filmmakers, painters and designers will present their work in different formats. All sorts of platforms will be arranged: there will be a cinema campus, an international photo centre, an interactive library, a new theatre, etc. Participants will have an opportunity to pass the GTO tests ( Ready for Labour and Defence Civil Defence standards), and compete in the ECO Race and cyber tournaments. The Festival will cover the entire Sochi Olympic Park. Bolshoy Sports Palace will host the exciting grand Festival opening and closing ceremonies, which will undoubtedly come as an amazing surprise and enhance the splendid Festival. Art installations, a recreation area and the WFYS 2017 Stage will be arranged on Medals Plaza to host cultural programme events. The Main Media Centre will be devoted to the scientific, educational and discussion programme, enabling participants to set up an international working platform as a first step in promoting future cooperation between young people from all over the world. And that s not even half of what s going on! The Ice Cube, Adler Arena, the Skate Park, the Formula One Track and other Olympic Park facilities will also welcome Festival participants and guests. 4

10 Media book GENERAL INFORMATION FOR JOURNALISTS 4 Transport services A free-of-charge shuttle service is provided for accredited media representatives and bloggers. You can use shuttles only by presenting a printed accreditation confirmation or accreditation badge (see Accreditation Badges/Accreditation Centre section). Shuttle parking points are located in the immediate vicinity of the airport, at official hotels for journalists accommodation (Imeretinskiy Apart Hotel, Russian Seasons Deluxe Hotel, Yuzhnoe Vzmorie Health Resort, Sochi Marriott Krasnaya Polyana 5* Hotel), and at the Accreditation Centre, Main Media Centre (Checkpoint 6) and Olympic Park (Checkpoint 2). Shuttle stops are indicated by signs. For personal belongings lost or found on the shuttles, please contact the information stands at the International Press Centre or one of our volunteers. Journalists are free to use rented or personal cars in the city, but not within the security boundaries. There will be no direct access to Festival event venues for personal and hire cars. 11 Arrival in/departure from Sochi Accredited journalists and bloggers arriving at Sochi International Airport can use free-of-charge shuttles to get to the Accreditation Centre and official hotels for journalists accommodation (Imeretinskiy Apart Hotel, Russian Seasons Deluxe Hotel, Yuzhnoe Vzmorie Health Resort, Sochi Marriott Krasnaya Polyana 5* Hotel). Shuttle stops at the airport and railway station are indicated by signs. Accreditation Badges / Accreditation Centre Access to the sites of the World Festival of Youth and Students is granted to media representatives and bloggers who have passed the accreditation procedure and received a badge at an accreditation centre. The Moscow Accreditation Centre is located on the ground floor (entrance 2) of the World Trade Centre, 12, Krasnopresnenskaya Embankment. Working hours: 1 20 October 2017, from 10:00 to 19:00. The Sochi Accreditation Centre is located by the main entrance to Olympic Park. Open from 15 September to 21 October Working hours: 15 September 2 October :00 18:00 (on business days) 2 October 7 October :00 19:00 8 October 21 October hours Picking up accreditation badges Badges are issued only to media representatives and bloggers with accreditation confirmation upon completion of an application on the official website of the 19 th World Festival of Youth and Students russia2017.com. The following should be presented to pick up an accreditation badge: For Russian media representatives and bloggers a passport and media identification card (if available); For foreign media representatives and bloggers an accreditation card from the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs or a press card and a passport. If a media representative is unable to pick up their badge in person, another media representative may do this for them by presenting a power of attorney on the media outlet s letterhead signed by the director or the person responsible for personnel management at the organisation with the organisation s certified seal (if any). 13
14 The badge is non-transferable. The badge must be worn visibly at all times at WFYS venues and produced at the request of Festival security. Lost accreditation badges If an accreditation badge is lost (or stolen), the media representative or blogger must immediately notify any WFYS information stand. A lost badge will be blocked and you will be given a duplicate. Media book 14
15 Media book SECURITY CHECK 5 The accredited media representatives and bloggers checkpoint is located at the Main Media Centre (Checkpoint 6). A security check is exercised at the checkpoint, including a personal search and an inspection of personal belongings and equipment. An accreditation badge must be presented to security officers at the checkpoint. Please bear in mind that any inconvenience that may be caused by the security check is explained solely by our intent to guarantee the safety of journalists working at the International Press Centre, as well as that of Festival participants and guests. Please note the list of items prohibited at Festival venues (a full list is provided in the Media section of the website): 1. firearms, air guns, gas spray guns, missile weapons and cold weapons of all types and ammunition thereto; 2. explosives and components thereof; 3. radioactive substances and items with high background radiation; 4. poisonous and toxic substances; 5. highly flammable and inflammable substances; 6. squibs; 7. electric shock devices; 8. narcotic substances; 9. other items that pose a hazard and are prohibited for circulation on the territory of the Russian Federation. 15
16 Media book INTERNATIONAL PRESS CENTRE 6 The International Press Centre is a modern working space for media representatives and bloggers at the Festival with an area of 1.4 km 2. The press centre is located on the first floor of the Main Media Centre (MMC). The International Press Centre will operate on a 24-hour basis from 9:00 on 14 October until 13:00 on 22 October Press Centre map: How to get to the International Press Centre 16 The International Press Centre is located in the Main Media Centre (1, Olympiysky Avenue, Sochi). Access rules Access to the International Press Centre is granted to media representatives, bloggers and employees of the Photo Hosting Agency and Host Broadcaster that have passed the accreditation procedure and received an accreditation badge. Media representatives and bloggers can access the Festival site via the Main Media Centre building located at: 1, Olympiysky Avenue, Sochi (Checkpoint 6). 17
18 Information stand You can get all the information you need about the Press Centre and Festival programme events, as well as any assistance you may require at the information stand located in the International Press Centre. Working areas Media book To ensure that media representatives and bloggers can work efficiently, a working area, a comfort working area, an International Broadcast Centre (see the International Broadcast Centre section), a press conference hall, a briefing hall and an interview room have been arranged in the International Press Centre. There are 234 workstations in the working area for media representatives and bloggers. Laptops and multi-functional devices for printing, copying and scanning of documents and images are available to journalists free of charge. There are also plasma displays broadcasting WFYS 2017 internal TV on a 24-hour basis. All phones and fax machines installed in the Press Centre have free inter-city and international access. No reservation of workstations for individual media representatives or bloggers is envisaged. The Press Centre also includes a hall for press events (seating up to 100 people), a briefing hall (seating up to 30 people) and an interview room (seating up to 12 people). The press conference hall and the briefing hall can host press events of any format (press conferences, briefings, agreement signing ceremonies) and they have professional lighting and sound equipment installed, including simultaneous interpreting booths. The halls can be reserved free of charge. To reserve a hall, fill in application form. These are available in the Media section of the official WFYS 2017 website. Reservations will be made on a first-come, first-served basis. 20 Luggage room In the Main Media Centre, you may leave your personal belongings in the luggage room located next to the media representatives working area. Keys are issued at the information stand, where your personal data and contact details will be registered and you will be familiarised with the terms of use. WFYS 2017 organisers assume no responsibility for the safety of valuables and left items. Media book Press kit There are press kits for accredited media representatives and bloggers. You can get your press kit at the International Press Centre information stand by presenting your accreditation badge. Smoking areas There is a smoking area outside the International Press Centre. Smoking anywhere other than in this designated area is PROHIBITED. Fire safety For fire safety reasons, there are fire exits from all areas of the International Press Centre. In case of fire hazard, please follow the instructions of the firemen, security officers, Press Centre staff and volunteers. Lost & found Please contact an information stand if you lose any of your belongings. WFYS 2017 organisers assume no responsibility for the safety of any personal belongings left unattended. 23 Media book INTERNATIONAL BROADCAST CENTRE 7 A 4.8 km 2 International Broadcast Centre is located in one part of the International Press Centre, on the first floor of the Main Media Centre. It will be open from 6:00 until midnight every day from 14 to 22 October The international broadcast will be formed by the Festival host broadcaster VGTRK Russia (All Russian State TV and Radio Broadcasting Company) from live broadcasts and recordings of the key WFYS 2017 events. The International Broadcast Centre includes: Host broadcaster s operator room; TV and radio company area (22 booths for TV companies and 3 booths for radio companies); Fixed stand-up posts. TV and radio companies must provide their own staff with all the equipment they need to operate effectively. Fixed stand-up posts Location: 6 fixed posts at Medals Plaza and 1 fixed post in the main lobby on the first floor of the International Press Centre. Designation: live coverage from the central site of the Festival. Equipment at stand-up posts: 6 cells with electric sockets, wired Internet access, line of TV signal transmission to the host broadcaster s operator room, telephone line with international access, four-wire service channel (on request). Operation of mobile satellite communication stations (MSCS) MSCS will be located on a special site next to the Main Media Centre. Number of stands 10. The organisers will provide all the requisite communications with the International Broadcast Centre (Main Media Centre, first floor) and a power supply for MSCS. 23

26 Media book INFORMATION SERVICES 9 WFYS 2017 internal television An internal TV channel will be broadcast on a 24-hour basis on plasma displays at the Main Media Centre, with live standups from key Festival events, news, including an evening Diary of the Festival, interviews with Festival participants and guests, content created by Youth Media Centre participants, the daily timetable, etc. Broadcast on the WFYS 2017 website Some events of the World Festival of Youth and Students will be broadcast online in the Media section at Recordings of past WFYS 2017 events An archive of live broadcasts is available in the Media section at www. russia2017.com. Communication and navigation In addition to the internal TV channel, screens will display navigation information: session advertisements, programme changes, event timetable, advertisements of cultural and sports events. Distribution of press releases (advertisements) 26 Press releases (advertisements) about press events will be published on the Press Releases and Advertisements pages of the Media section at www. russia2017.com, and distributed at the information stand in the International Press Centre. All materials will be available in Russian and English.

29 Media book USEFUL INFORMATION 11 Exhibition pavilion A new international exhibition brand YOUTH EXPO will be presented and launched as part of the 19 th World Festival of Youth and Students. What is YOUTH EXPO? 1. A chance to identify high-potential youth projects in Russia and abroad; 2. An opportunity to familiarise the international and Russian audience with young people s achievements in various spheres; 3. Support for and promotion of unique content at Russian and international exhibition platforms. Location and opening hours The YOUTH EXPO will be located in the Main Media Centre and in Olympic Park. It will be open to all categories of Festival participants: On 14 October from 9:00 to 18:00; On October from 8:00 to 20:00; On 22 October from 9:00 to 18:00. ATM There are Sberbank ATMs at the Main Media Centre. You may use the bank cards of most major international payment systems in Russia. The location of ATMs is marked on the general map (see the Sochi WFYS 2017 site map section). 29
30 Currency exchange The only currency used in Russia is the Russian rouble. You can exchange your currency into roubles and back at all banks and exchange points. The exchange rate is set by the Russian Central Bank in line with exchange quotations. There are no restrictions on exchange operations. Driving licence Media book International driving licences issued by member countries of the 1949 International Convention on Road Traffic are recognised in the Russian Federation. In Russia, vehicles drive on the right. Electric sockets Electric sockets in Russia are of European standard type (220 W, Hz). Weather in Sochi In October, the Sochi weather is changeable. There can be hot days in the first part of the month, when there is still an Indian summer, but temperatures will be going down towards the end of October. The average temperature is С during the day and С at night. The average water temperature is +18 С. Rules of conduct in an emergency Sochi is located on the Black Sea, in a seismically active zone, so it would be useful to bear in mind certain rules of conduct in the event of an earthquake or hurricane.
