1 42 Medals!! 2016 Paralympic Games TEAM USA fought for and earned 42 medals in the 2016 edition of the Paralympic Games in Rio de Janiero. We finished second overall in Golds (16) and total medals (42). That is the highest number of medals earned by a USA team and the first time we have beaten Great Britain since Internally the goal for the team was between 36 and 40 medals, so this team over delivered. Country Golds Silver Bronze Total China USA Great Britain As always, one of the team goals at any major championships is to try and get one sweep and we got two sweeps out of the women s 53/54 classes as they cleaned up in the 1500 and 5000 with some superb team tactics. The McSweep of Tatyana McFadden, Chelsea McClammer and Amanda McGrory was a beautiful thing to watch. This team had 27 athletes who had previously competed at a Games, which means we had 46 rookie athletes. This is very important for our future competitions. We had two World Records (David Blair and Rachael Morrison) and 12 new American Records (Roderick Townsend, Breanna Clark, Alexa Halko, Kerry Morgan, Hunter Woodhall (2), Sam Grewe, Grace Norman, Trenten Merrill, Shaquille Vance, Allysa Seely, and Chaz Davis). Congrats to all. All the negative press on Brazil did not occur during the Paralympic Games. Spectators- we had great spectators for almost all sessions they were absolutely wonderful and cheered for great performances. We didn t have problems with mosquitoes, the weather was great with no rain, housing was good, transportation fine (just long travel to our venue), food was boring but it is hard to feed 1,000 + people and please them all. The Brazilian people are wonderful and worked hard to help everyone.
2 We did have our fair share of surprises, both good and bad, but the team maintained focus on the mission at hand. MISSION: ACCOMPLISHED 16 GOLDS 4 Golds- 2 Silvers- Tatyana McFadden (T54) lived up to her nickname of The Beast as she captured Golds in the 400m, 800m, 1500m, and 5000m. Just an unbelievable performance by one athlete as she had 12 races crammed into the 10 day schedule. She led the charges in the 1500 and 5000m with well-timed surges and amazing execution of team tactics to win and pull her teammates through for a sweep. It was a beautiful thing to watch. 400m Prelim time Final m Prelim time 1:45.17 Final 1: m Prelim time 3:27.41 Final 3:22.50 (a new Paralympic Games record) 5000m Prelim time 11:47.37 Final 11:54.07 Silvers 100m- Prelim time Final Marathon- 1:38:44 Tatyana received the same time as the Chinese athlete, but it was determined by the photo finish that the Chinese athlete had narrowly cleared the front axle ahead of Tatyana s.
