2 SWIMMING The Tradition of Champions: SWIMMING 2010 UVIC QUICK FACTS ff Vikes swimmers have won a total of 184 medals (52 gold, 69 silver, 63 bronze) at the CIS Championships ff At the Canada West conference championship, Nick Sinclair became the first swimmer to ever win Athlete of the Meet and Rookie of the Meet. Sinclair later earned adulation as both Canada West and CIS Athlete of the Week. ff After his six-medal performance at the conference championship, Sin- clair was featured in the Faces in the Crowd section of the February 15th issue of Sports Illustrated magazine. ff The Vikes won a total of 11 medals at the Canada West meet for their best team performance since Both teams placed fourth in the overall point standings. ff Stephanie Dixon is the only CIS athlete to break a world record at the CIS Championships (2004), setting new standards for swimmers with a disability in the 100 back and 400IM ff Seven Vikes athletes have represented Canada at the Olympic and Paralympic Games ff At the 1984 Games Pam Rai won a bronze medal as a member of Canada s 400 medley relay team; at the Paralympics, Mike Edgson has won 17 medals and Stephanie Dixon has 19 to her credit ff The Vikes have had two CIS swimmers of the year named with Pam Rai receiving the award in 1985 after winning gold in the 400 free and 100 fly; Jon Kelly won in 1986 after taking gold in 200 fly, 200 IM, and 400 IM ff UVic has hosted the CIS Championships twice at Commonwealth Place (1994, 2003) Location:...Victoria, BC Founded: Conference:... 7 SWIMMING 2010 HEAD COACH: PETER VIZSOLYI Peter Vizsolyi dives into his 27th year as head coach of the Vikes Men s and Women s Swim Team. His wealth of experience at the CIS and club level has led to two CIS Coach of the Year awards, 184 medals at the CIS Championships and seven Olympians. Since 1983, the Vikes have won 52 gold, 69 silver and 63 bronze at the CIS Championships and in 1980 the women s team won the Canada West conference championship. The Vikes have also had two CIS Outstanding Swimmer of the Year awards, and Vizsolyi himself was recognized by the CIS as Coach of the Year in 1988 and The Vikes best finish at the CIS Championship came via the women s team in 1998 with a second place finish. The men s team has finished third overall four times (1987, 88, 00, 02). In international competition, seven Vikes have competed at the Olympic and Paralympic Games and have won a total of 36 medals. Paralympic swimmer Stephanie Dixon is responsible for 19 of those medals, and she is the only athlete to ever break a world record at a CIS Championship. An additional 21 swimmers have competed at various international meets and have won 25 international medals. The Budapest, Hungary native is extremely active throughout the swimming community. He is currently the Technical Director for Pacific Coast Swimming and the Pacific Sport National Swim Centre, as well as being an active member of the Swim B.C s Technical Committee. In 1994, he served as a Chairman of Swimming for the Commonwealth Games Society. He is a Nationally Certified Master Coach and is an Adjunct Asst. Professor at UVic. Furthermore, Vizsolyi is a Physician for various National teams and sport groups.
