H.S.H. Prince Albert II President of the Monegasque Olympic Committee Monaco s participation in the XX Winter Olympic Games represents an important date occurring at the dawn of the Monegasque Olympic Committee s Centenary. This event reiterates our continual desire - thanks to first-rate amenities and a policy initiated by my father, Prince Rainier III - to foster and encourage the practice of sport, which has become part of individual, family and social life. Sport, an essential element for development, enables human beings and their various languages and cultures to move closer together. It becomes a means of communication and a way of sharing basic values such as tolerance and perseverance. Turin 2006, our seventh successive participation since Sarajevo is an important moment for us and one in which our athletes are experiencing with pride and honour. I am convinced that Alexandra Coletti and Olivier Jenot, Patrice Servelle and Jérémy Bottin are best prepared for this major event. Finally, this is also an important chapter as it is marked by the enlistment of a female athlete for the very first time. I have had the privilege of taking part in five Winter Olympic Games as an athlete. Today, I am happy once again to share with our athletes those very solid Olympic ideals, such as fraternity, friendship, respect and peace, which in addition to the sports competitions themselves, surround such an event.

Alexandra Coletti Alpine Skiing The Olympic Games For me, this is quite simply a wonderful dream that has become a reality. Any athlete competing for victory could not wish for a better event in their career. I am very proud to represent my country s colours and hope that Monaco will be as proud of me. I m going to give it my all in order not to let my country down. Caption: The OG a wonderful dream that has become a reality. Goals I am going to try to do my best, to race in the same way I usually do. And once I have got past the finish line, I ll turn round to look at the score board.what I would like to achieve is to be among the first fifteen in the rankings, which won t be easy. In the world cup, I always finished between the 20 th and 30 th position. I have set myself the goal to do slightly better. Turin is one of my objectives, but I am also thinking of the next OG in Vancouver, by which time I hope to have made even more progress. I have been slowed down a little bit by certain injuries. I ve managed not to further injure myself for over a year now. I am keeping my fingers crossed that I ll be in top shape for Caption: Race in the same way as I usually do. All the disciplines on the agenda I am quite versatile. I think that I am better at disciplines focused on speed. However, as I have been doing a lot of training for the slalom and giant slalom too, and since I have been given the opportunity of taking part, I think that this will be equally a good experience to be able to position myself compared to the best in each category. A race every other day can be difficult to handle. But there are many girls on the international circuit, who, like me, match each other in the five disciplines of alpine skiing. Skiing I began skiing in Limone when I was 2 years and three months old. I joined the Monte Carlo Ski Club when I was eight. Since then, it has become a real passion. I love skiing because in addition to the natural environment and gliding over the snow, there is a combination of aggressiveness and fluidity. You have to try to be in harmony as much as possible with the slope to become an integral part of it. The Olympic Slopes When I was younger, I skied on certain slopes that have now become Olympic ones. I don t know the upper section of the downhill slope. I came to have a look just under a month ago. It is a relatively easy slope and that is going to be particularly difficult; the easier the slope, the tighter it is. The slopes are very technical and very pleasant to ski as far as the slalom and giant slalom are concerned.
Alexandra Coletti in brief Fact file born on 8 th August m 62 kg Single Junior-cadet champion of Italy Three times junior champion 4 th in the World Juniors (2003) 26 th in this year s World Cup 1 st participation in the Winter Olympic Games Competition Schedule Wednesday, 15 th February, 12.00: Ladies downhill (San Sicario Fraiteve) Friday, 17 th February: ladies combined 12.00: downhill and 19.00: slalom (Sestriere Colle) Sunday, 19 th February, 12.00: Ladies Super-G (San Sicario Fraiteve) Wednesday, 22nd February: (1st run), (2nd run) Friday, 24th February: ladies giant slalom (Sestriere Colle) 9.30 (1 st run), (2 nd run)
Olivier Jenot Alpine skiing The Olympic Games I am perfectly aware that not all athletes are given the opportunity of taking part in such an event... I am therefore extremely proud to represent my country and to fly the red and white colours. Personally, I haven t yet realised the magnitude of such an event. But I am sure that it will be even better than you can imagine or see on TV Caption: Extremely proud to represent my country s colours. Goals I m not going to place any undue pressure upon myself. I know what I m capable of and am going to give it my best shot. The most important thing is taking part. I m going to make the most of this opportunity to gain beneficial experience combined with pleasure. After Turin, my goals will be bigger and higher, with mid to long-term prospects. Although Turin is at the forefront of my mind at the moment, Vancouver is also in my line of target. Caption: I m not going to place any undue pressure upon myself. Super G, giant slalom and slalom on the programme I have decided to take part in these three disciplines as they re the one I love most. The Super G enables me to focus also on speed. I opted not to take part in the downhill and combined races due to a knee injury. Skiing I began skiing when I was 8. Since then, I have gone skiing every weekend and during the school holidays. This year, as I am getting ready for the Olympics, I have been excused from school in Grenoble, which has enabled me to be on my skis almost every day. In this sport, I d say there are quite a few tricky parameters to deal with. This discipline is practised outdoors in frequently unstable weather conditions, which means you often to change your tactics. In the end, the main thing is to try to be at one with the slope. Being alone face to face with the slope is not something everyone can do. But being alone means that you are finally master of what you are doing and what you have decided to do. Caption: To be at one with the slope. Olivier Jenot in brief Fact file born on 28 th February m 64 kg

Patrice Servelle Bobsleigh The Olympic Games Once again, it is a dream to take part in the Olympic Games. Even the first time it was something that seemed impossible. For a sportsman, the Olympic Games are the utlimate goal. When you take part, you have to represent your country as best as you possibly can. But just going there, taking part in the OG is already an incredible experience. Participating in this year s Olympic Games is the fruition of four years hard work. At 32, I hope to be able to continue until the next Winter OG in Vancouver in Caption: The fruition of four years hard work. Goals After Salt Lake, the goals for Turin were quite high, until this summer, until the team was faced with a few minor injury problems. Our objective was to qualify, which we have achieved. Now we need to represent the Principality as best we can. Bobsleigh Every time I m in a bobsleigh, I feel very good. It s a difficult and tough sport, which requires a great deal of team spirit. If you don t have that, you can t continue. If you don t like this sport, you can t practise it. Over time, you can sense whether somebody really likes it. The role of the driver It s not just the physical side of things. Of course, I have to take part in the push with the other members of the team. But the role of the driver has a different angle to it, as he needs to work out the best way to approach the slope and the trajectories. This is something that we work out with our coach who tells us the lines to follow and who also prepares us psychologically to perform well. Downhill performance is extremely important. You have to understand the slope and try to follow the line given by the coach, trying to steer as little as possible so that the sled glides at maximum speed. Caption: As a driver, I have to understand the slope. The Cesana Bobsleigh Run We had the opportunity of taking part in the World Cup (11 th ) on the Cesana Bobsleigh Run last year. This year, we took part in an international training programme. It s a very fast slope with 19 bends: a lot of bends compared to other runs which have between 12 and 20. It is a long run where concentration is of key importance. It s not a difficult slope. A beginner can run it without any problem. However, achieving a good speed will be difficult as it is very technical. His conclusion The push, as always, is critical to a good performance. You also have to take into account the
equipment used by each team. With all the pressures of the event, many surprises could be in store at the OG. Patrice Servelle in brief Fact file born on 20 th July m 90 kg Single 4 th in the World Championship (2004) 11 th in the World Cup rankings (2005) 2 nd participation in the Winter Olympic Games after Salt Lake (2002) Competition Schedule Saturday, 18 th February: two-man bobsleigh (1 st heat) Cesana Pariol (2 nd heat) Cesana Pariol Sunday, 19 th February: two-man bobsleigh (3 rd heat) Cesana Pariol (4 th heat) Cesana Pariol
Jeremy Bottin Bobsleigh The Olympic Games For me, it s a dream come true... To be able to take part in the Olympics is also a reward for all the efforts I have made in bobsleighing since Despite a few injuries, this is something I have always believed in and on which I have never given up. This year, I thought to myself: why not? So I trained even harder than usual. And in the end I was extremely lucky to be chosen. I m really looking forward to going to the Olympic Games in Turin. Quite frankly, if somebody had told me that one day I d be taking part in the Olympics, I wouldn t have believed them There s bound to be a certain amount of pressure as it s the first time that I m taking part at such a level. But I m going to try to evacuate any stress as best I can and listen to Patrice s (Servelle two-man bobsleigh driver) advice as he has already taken part in the Olympic Games, and just concentrate on the competition. Caption: The Olympic Games - a dream come true. Goals Reaping experience from such a large-scale event can only be positive. But also giving my best to honour my country. Bobsleigh I love the bobsleigh, as there is a real team spirit. We all know each other very well in the Monaco team. There has always been an excellent rapport between Patrice and me. We went to school together, we played football together We know each other very well and that is so important. Without such unity, nothing would be achieved. Caption: An excellent rapport with Patrice for many years The role of the brakeman At the departure, there s a special technique for the two-man bobsleigh. You have to set off together, to be perfectly synchronised, so that you can achieve the best time possible during the push or run-up phase before loading into the sled. Then once I m in the bobsleigh, I can t see the slope. Yet I have to keep track of it, as once we ve gone past the finish line, I need to apply the brakes. Although the run is short, it is truly intense. As brakeman, at the finish I can tell the driver what sort of sensations I felt and help him understand if certain bends were well performed or not. Caption: Keep track of the run without seeing it.
Jérémy Bottin in brief Fact file born on 19 th August m 105 kg 1 st participation in the Winter Olympic Games Competition Schedule Saturday, 18 th February: two-man bobsleigh (1 st heat) Cesana Pariol (2 nd heat) Cesana Pariol Sunday, 19 th February: two-man bobsleigh (3 rd heat) Cesana Pariol (4 th heat) Cesana Pariol
Alpine Skiing The various disciplines of alpine skiing are the downhill, the slalom, the giant slalom, the super- G and the combined. The differences between these five disciplines are determined by the slope, the difference in altitude between the start and finish, the number of gates and where the latter are positioned. The winner is the fastest skier not to have missed any gates. The Downhill This is the Queen of alpine skiing races with the steepest descent. The difference in altitude for the men's events course varies between 800 and 1,100 metres, and between 500 and 800 metres for the ladies' competition. The distances between the gates are long, which enables skiers to achieve tremendous speeds. Downhill skiers always seek to maximise their aerodynamic efficiency wherever possible over the course: choosing the shortest trajectories and allowing their skis to slide over the snow thereby creating as little friction as possible. Speeds of over 120 km/h are sometimes achieved. During the competition, participants are given only one chance to reach the finish line. Competitors are required to pass through the gates, which are nearly always arranged perpendicularly to the line of descent. The Slalom The slalom has the shortest slopes and sharpest turns. The difference in slope level can vary between 180 and 220 metres for the men s slalom, and between 140 and 200 metres for the women's competition. The gates are closer to each other. The competition comprises two heats over the same slope, but with different courses. Times for both heats are combined. The winner is the one who achieves the fastest overall time. The number of gates is between 55 and 75 for the men and 40 and 60 for the women. The slalom demands great agility and manoeuvrability in order to avoid forking the poles (i.e. when both skis do not pass on the same side of the pole a slalom skier s worst nightmare). The slopes in slalom races are rather steep, with very hard snow, often artificially iced to avoid the premature deterioration of the surface caused by the sharp ski blades. The Giant Slalom The giant slalom is a freer version of the slalom, with fewer and wider turns. The difference in level varies from 300 to 450 metres for the men s competition and 300 to 400 metres for the women's. Competitors run two heats over two different courses, but on the same slope. Times for both heats are combined. The winner is the one who achieves the fastest overall time. Gates are closer than those in speed races. Competitors need to keep excellent control of their skis and to be extremely fast when changing direction. The number of gates is obtained from a percentage, between 11% and 15%, of the relative difference in altitude. More specifically, they are between 56 and 70 in number for the men and 46 and 58 for the women. The starting order for the second heat is organised by reversing the order of the first 30 classified in the first heat, or in special cases, the first 15.
The Super-G The Super-G originated at the beginning of the 80s designed to be a combination of downhill and giant slalom racing (although nowadays it is closer to the downhill both for its speed and technical elements). The men s super-g races are carried out over a difference in altitude that varies from between 500 and 650 metres (for the women's races, it varies from 400 to 600 metres). The course is marked with blue and red alternating gates that are at least 35 in number for men and 30 for women. These gates form changes of directions that correspond to not more than 10% of the difference in altitude. The use of helmets is compulsory. The Super-G (super giant slalom) combines the speed of the downhill and the technical skills of the giant slalom. The slope is shorter than the downhill one, but longer than that of the giant slalom. The Combined The combined competition comprises a downhill, followed by a slalom descent in two heats. All times are combined and the winner is the one who achieves the fastest overall time. The slopes of the combined race are shorter than those in the downhill or slalom races.
The three competition venues of the Monegasque athletes Sestriere Borgata The Kandahar Banchetta slopes (G. Nasi) will host the men's super-g, downhill and combined downhill. The first part of each course alternates brief flat stretches with very technical bends. Afterwards the slope enters into a steeper and faster wooded area with a number of bends and schuss up to the finish line. Sestriere Colle The giant slalom slope at Sises is one of the most technical in the world. The Giovanni A. Agnelli slope, that will host the slalom, runs parallel to the giant slalom slope. Extensive adaptation work was carried out specifically for the OG. San Sicario Fraiteve Located at the highest point of mount Fraiteve, this new slope will host the women s downhill and Super-G races. The last section comprises a slope, a very steep wall and a jump just before the finish.
The Bobsleigh The bobsleigh specialities are competed in teams of two and four. At the departure, all team members push the sled in an explosive sprint for about 50 metres a distance which is usually covered in less than six seconds to a speed of about 40 km/h before the crew loads into the sled. It is the driver s skills and talent that are the determining factors during the winding descent. The steering mechanism is handled by the driver by pulling onto two small pulleys attached to an axle that makes the front section of the sled turn. The brake is applied by using a type of lever that releases a saw-toothed metal bar into the ice. The brake can only be used once the sled has crossed the finish line and cannot be used under any circumstances during the descent, even in the event of a mistake. The elements of success in the bobsleigh competition are the push, the steering and the materials (sled and runners). The starting order is drawn on the basis of the different merit groups according to the results achieved by the teams in the previous World Cup. In the Olympic Games, there are four rounds. The team that records the fastest time at the end of the downhill wins. In the case of a draw, there are two winners. If the sled overturns, but all members of the team have passed the finish line inside the sled, the descent is considered valid. The two-man bobsleigh team is made up of the driver and the brakeman, who are joined by two others in the four-man bobsleigh. The speed reached before the athletes load into the sled is approximately 40 km/h, while the maximum speed reached during the descent is about 140 km/h. The course length is 1,435 metres with a maximum difference in altitude of approximately 12%. The run is slightly elevated after the finish line in order to allow braking. The driver s role is to negotiate the series of straights and curves in the best way possible. The Cesana Pariol slope This new 1,435 metre long bobsleigh run has 19 bends (11 left-hand and 8 right-hand). The most technical section of the run is the TORO: three bends (6-7-8) one after the other. The maximum speed is approximately 130 km/h. The two-man bobsleigh in figures The maximum weight of the two-man bobsleigh, including crew, is 390 kg. Without the crew, the minimum weight is 170 kg. The maximum length of the two-man sled is 2.70 metres and the maximum width 67 cm. The steel runners are approximately 1 metre long, 10 cm high and between 12 to 14 mm thick.
Two Types of Bend The classic bend If the bend is shaped like a satellite dish, the centrifugal force will determine the bobsleigh s trajectory, which will always be the same. The spiral bend If the track has a so-called «cut» bend, the trajectory will depend on the angle in which the sled enters the bend.

MONACO AT THE WINTER OLYMPICS Turin marks the 7 th consecutive participation of the Monegasque Olympic Committee in the Winter Olympic Games. Since Sarajevo (1984), the Principality of Monaco has been a regular contender in the Winter O.G. SARAJEVO discipline (Alpine skiing) 1 athlete Appearing at the Winter Olympic Games for the very first time, this was a major first for the Principality of Monaco. David Lajoux, the first Monegasque athlete in history to sport the «red and white» colours at the Winter O.G., was also the youngest skier in competition. After a fall during the slalom, he managed to rank at position number 47 out of a total of 61 participants in the downhill. CALGARY disciplines (bobsleigh and Alpine skiing) 4 athletes In Canada, H.S.H. Crown Prince Albert took part in his first Olympic Games. After carrying the flag for the Monegasque delegation at the opening ceremony, he teamed up with Gilbert Bessi (David Tomatis was the substitute). At the end of two heats, the Monaco team ranked 25/41. Fabrice Notari ranked 62/120 in the giant slalom and 64/120 in the super-g. ALBERTVILLE discipline (bobsleigh) 5 athletes In Albertville, 2 two-man bobsleigh teams took part. H.S.H. Crown Prince Albert teamed up with Pascal Camia. They finished 43/45. The other team, comprising Gilbert Bessi and Michel Vatrican ranked 23/45. A first appearance in the four-man bobsleigh driven by Prince Albert (with Gilbert Bessi, David Tomatis and Michel Vatrican) finishing 27/29.
LILLEHAMMER disciplines (bobsleigh and Alpine skiing) 5 athletes In Norway, there was only one two-man bobsleigh team. Crown Prince Albert was the driver (with Gilbert Bessi) and ranked 31/42. The four-man bobsleigh driven by Prince Albert (with Gilbert Bessi, Pascal Camia and David Tomatis) finished 26/29. Julien Castellini also took part in the Alpine skiing super-g category. NAGANO discipline (bobsleigh) 5 athletes In the Land of the Rising Sun, the Monegasque two-man bobsleigh was represented by Gilbert Bessi (driver) this time. He teamed up with Jean-François Calmes. The Principality s representatives ranked 24/49. Headed by Prince Albert as driver, (forming a team with Gilbert Bessi, Pascal Camia and Jean-François Calmes), the four-man bobsleigh finished 28/32. Emmanuel Zampori was the substitute for the Monegasque team. SALT LAKE CITY discipline (bobsleigh) 5 athletes The four-man bobsleigh, driven by Prince Albert (5 th participation in the Winter O.G.), with Patrice Servelle, Sébastien Gattuso and Charles Oula on board, received a big fright in the third heat. A skilled athlete, Prince Albert was not going to give up and continued in the 4 th heat (when Jean-François Calmes, the substitute, made his appearance), resulting in being placed at 28 th position. The two-man bobsleigh (Patrice Servelle and Sébastien Gattuso) ranked 22/32.
The History of the Monegasque Olympic Committee Since earlier times, the Principality of Monaco has been the hub of artistic, cultural and sports events, which have contributed to its international reputation. In 1907, Count Albert Gautier-Vignal, the great patron of sport on the French Riviera, wanted to represent the Principality in the International Olympic Committee over which his good friend, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, presided. A year later, Monaco became the 25 th member state of the IOC.
