1 29/07/2016 Jake Bensted AUS Team Rio 2016 O 뱎cial Home of the 2016 Australian Olympic Team Jake Bensted Athlete Biography With multiple Australian and Oceania Championships to his name along with a Commonwealth Games medal, 23-year-old Jake Bensted will get his chance at Olympic glory in Rio. Bensted was introduced to the sport by his uncle at the age of six and 㻁 rst represented his country when he was 15. He won his 㻁 rst of 㻁 ve straight junior national titles in 2010 and claimed his 㻁 rst senior national title in The -73kg 㻁 ghter won his 㻁 rst Oceania title in 2013, 㻁 nished second in 2014 before being selected for his Commonwealth Games debut later that year. Bensted made the semi- 㻁 nals before going down in a close 㻁 ght with eventual gold medallist Danny Williams of England. He bounced back to 㻁 nish with the bronze medal following a win over Scotland s Patrick Dawson. Needing to win both the 2015 and 2016 Oceania Championships to give himself a shot at automatic quali 㻁 cation for Rio, Bensted did just that. Having won the 2015 title he headed to the World Championships where he went down in his opening bout to eventual silver medallist Riki Nakaya of Japan. He started the Olympic year with a 㻁 fth place 㻁 nish in Tunisia and a seventh in Peru before going on to all but seal his debut Olympic appearance with a win over Gaston Lafon from French Polynesia in the 㻁 nal of the 2016 Oceania Championships. 4 29/07/2016 Eoin Coughlan AUS Team Rio 2016 O 䤀턃 cial Home of the 2016 Australian Olympic Team Eoin Coughlan Athlete Biography -81kg 虂ghterط Eoin Coughlan will compete at his debut Olympic Games in Rio after a consistent two years has seen him rise up the Olympic rankings. Coughlan won his 虂rstط junior national title in 2010 and after 虂nishingط as the runner up in his senior national championships debut he stood on the top of the podium a year later in the open competition. Having 虂nishedط with bronze and then silver in 2013 and 2014, Coughlan needed to win the two Oceania Championships leading into Rio to secure his Olympic debut. The 24-year-old did just that with his victory 2016 over Fijian Josateki Naulu all but sealing his spot on the Australian Team. Coughlan competed at his 虂rstط World Championships in He was awarded a 虂rstط round bye before going down to Portugal's Diogo Lima in a close clash that lasted the full 虂veط minutes. Eoin comes from a talented family of judokas with sisters Aoife and Maeve narrowly missing out on qualiط虂cation for Rio. 20-year-old Aoife has won Oceania Championships silver three times while at just 17 Maeve has achieved that feat twice. 7 29/07/2016 Miranda Giambelli AUS Team Rio 2016 O cial Home of the 2016 Australian Olympic Team Miranda Giambelli Athlete Biography Having competed for Italy up until 2013, Australian-born Miranda Giambelli will wear the green and gold at her debut Games in Rio. Born in Canberra to an Italian father and Indonesian mother, Giambelli moved to Italy when she was six months old. She took up the sport at age eight after her dad wanted her to be able to defend herself. Having had success for the Italian team, the -78kg 䘀쐂 ghter 䘀쐂 rst thought about competing in 2012 and went on to compete in her 䘀쐂 rst Oceania Championship in Giambelli proved she had what it take to make the Rio Olympic Games winning her 䘀쐂 rst European Cup event in Bratislava in Soon after she won her 䘀쐂 rst Oceania Championship title in 2015 and claimed silver and bronze at two more European Cup events. A second Oceania Championship title to kick o 䘀䤃 2016 ensured she pushed inside the top 14 of the Olympic adjusted rankings to book her ticket to Rio. 10 29/07/2016 Katharina Haecker AUS Team Rio 2016 OLcial Home of the 2016 Australian Olympic Team Katharina Haecker Athlete Biography Katharina Haecker won her third straight Oceania Championship in April, 2016 to help ensure she continued her rise up the rankings and booked her ticket to her debut Olympic Games in Rio. Born in Germany to an Australian father and a German mother, Haecker was introduced to the sport in Hamburg when she was six. Having been inspired by Yvonne Bönisch becoming the 倀茂 rst female Olympic Champion in Judo for Germany she began to dream of also winning Olympic gold. Haecker progressed through the ranks and after winning a number of junior international titles she took a break from the sport and spent a year in Australia. She returned to Germany, moved up a weight division from -57kg to -63kg and, despite it taking a little while to adjust, began to see the strong results return. She began 倀茂 ghting in Australia and got selected to represent the green and gold at the 2014 Oceania Championships which she went on to win. Haecker represented Australia at the 2014 Commonwealth Games where she went down in the 倀茂 ght for bronze against England s Faith Pitman. The Olympic year got o ࠃ倀 to a shaky start when she su ࠃ倀 ered an injury on the 倀茂 rst day of competition for the season. She was back at full 倀茂 tness in less than two months just in time for the Oceania Championships which proved crucial for her Rio 2016 quali 倀茂 cation. 13 29/07/2016 Josh Katz AUS Team Rio 2016 O}cial Home of the 2016 Australian Olympic Team Josh Katz Athlete Biography At 18 years and 220 days (at the time of the Rio 2016 Opening Ceremony), Joshua Katz will become Australia s youngest ever male judoka at an Olympic Games when he makes his debut at Rio. He is the fourth youngest Australian Olympian to compete in judo with 1972 Montreal Olympian Robin Moǀtt the youngest at 16 years and 164 days. A star in the junior ranks, Katz won the junior national championships in 2013 and 2014 and four straight junior Oceania Championships between In what was a breakout year, 2015 saw Katz win the junior and senior national titles and also claim the all-important senior Oceania title to signiǃcantly improve his chances of qualifying for Rio. Having won three straight national junior titles between , Katz won the junior Oceania Championship in After initially believing Tokyo 2020 was more realistic, he announced himself as a strong contender to make the Rio Team by winning both the junior and senior titles. He secured his 䘀쐂rst top ten at World Championship level when he 䘀쐂nished 9th at the 2015 junior World Championships in Abu Dhabi. The pocket-rocket has claimed the past 氦翩 ve Oceania Championships and also won the three National Championships she contested between Rayner was born in Essex in the United Kingdom and took up judo three months before moving to Australia at the age of nine. She secured a spot on the Commonwealth Games Team for the 2014 Glasgow Games.
