1 The Bull Sheet Established 1945 November 2017 Paul Bunyan Rifle and Sportsman s Club OCTOBER MEETING NOTES The calendar planning for 2018 will be discussed at the November 17 th (one week earlier this month to accommodate the holiday) board meeting. If you have an event that needs to be on next year s calendar, please attend this meeting. If you have any questions regarding the calendar, contact Chip Kormas. RSO Jim Hillburg asked me to remind everyone that shooters must pick up all of their brass, including 22RF, when they are done shooting for the day. There is a lot of 22RF brass being left on the ground after shooters are finished for the day, or worse yet, the brass is swept into the dirt in front of the firing line. This practice creates an additional chore for the caretakers who have to rake up the brass. Please put all of your spent brass in the red BRASS containers on the firing lines. The election of the 2018 club officers will be held at the December 22 nd general meeting. Any member in good standing, with a year or more of membership in the club, is eligible to run for elected office. If you would like to get involved in the club and are interested in running for one of the positions, contact Chip Kormas ( or here) to get your name added to the ballot. Our annual potluck dinner will be held after the general meeting. Dave Farrow announced that Jeff Snope will be hosting the Vision-X Night Match Classic matches December 9 th and 10 th. This is a two day outlaw match with all proceeds going to Toys for Tots. Twenty two vendors will be on site with products to try and lots of prizes for match competitors. Contact Jeff ( ) for more information. Puyallup, WA Rocky Walston will be hosting a ladies only shotgun event Sunday November 5 th on the shotgun range. Contact Rocky ( or here) if you have questions. Mark Curtis has raffle tickets for a 72 x80 buffalo blanket to be raffled off in July by the Northwest Colonial Reenactors Association. Only 500 of the $6 (or 2 for $10) tickets will be sold. Contact Mark ( ) if you are interested in purchasing a raffle ticket. Frank Phelps reported that the club brought in $4342 from the hunter sight-in program this year. Ed Cole notified us that past member Ron Baker passed away October 22 nd at the age of 76. Ron, a hard-working and dedicated club member for many years, was instrumental in a lot of the amenities and improvements we have at the club today. RANGE SAFETY OFFICER NEEDED The club has an immediate opening for a range safety officer. This is a paid position, open to club members with at least one year of membership and some experience as a range officer. This opening is for a weekend position on a rotating schedule. 2 NRA BASIC METALLIC CARTRIDGE RELOADING COURSE Dennis Wilcox The Paul Bunyan Rifle & Sportsman's Club will host a NRA Basic Metallic Cartridge Reloading Course Saturday and Sunday December 2 nd & 3 rd. The two day course will be taught by NRA Certified Instructors and will cover the fundamental safety rules for reloading, proper handling and storage of cartridge components, use of reloading manuals, set up and use of reloading equipment, proper techniques used to reload metallic cartridges, and more. This course consists of two mandatory sessions 10 AM 3:30 PM each day. To obtain a registration packet, send an with your name, address & phone number to spindleblaster@msn.com (preferred), or phone Dennis at Advance registration and deposit of course fee ($35) is required. Class size is limited to 12 students. Membership in Paul Bunyan R&S Club and/or the NRA is not required in order to attend this course. BULLSEYE CHAMPIONSHIP Larry Lang Here are the results of the State Bullseye Pistol Championship held September Jon Sellar retained his title of Washington State Precision Pistol Champion. He bested a rather low field of 14 shooters to win with a score of 2601, with 102 Xs out of a possible score of Curt Berger, from Richland was 1 st Expert with X. There were no Sharpshooter or Marksman classified shooters. Jon Sellar also won the Service Pistol match and the Distinguished.22 match, shooting on each. John Baczuk won the Distinguished Revolver match with Curt Berger won a bronze leg on the State Excellence in Competition (EIC) match with 285-8X JUNIORS Doug Shellenberger We held our first match on the new air gun range on the 14 th. We had 3 relays with a total of 23 shooters attending the match. We found that by using the lift (elevator) to haul all of the shooter s equipment upstairs, we had to allow an extra 15 minutes for each relay change. We still have a few bugs to work out in our process. Our next match will be in February. Over the summer, Alec Patajo qualified for the three position American Legion Air Rifle National Championships. Several hundred competitors participated in the event, and after two rounds of eliminations, the top 15 precision competitors from the nation were invited to the event at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. This is the second time Alec has participated in this event. Emme Nelson recently shot a 587 out of 600 possible in a national airgun postal match. The top 20 competitors in the matches, which run thru January, qualify to compete in the Army national airgun matches at Ft. Benning. With her score, she is currently in 3 rd place. USED BRASS AVAILABLE Larry Wilson has lots of used brass for sale. He has most handgun caliber brass on hand and will have a lot of various rifle brass when hunter sight-in is completed. Rifle brass is ten cents each and pistol brass is six cents each. The proceeds go to help the junior program. Give him a call afternoon at Page 2

3 CLUB CAPS AND SHIRTS Doug has a new order of club caps, selling for $12. They have a solid front/mesh back with the club emblem on the front. Doug also just received a new order of the club tee shirts, including the larger sizes. They are blue with the club emblem on the front. They are selling for $15. He still has some of the new club patches for sale at $12 each. The proceeds on these items go to support the junior program. If you are interested, get in touch with Doug at or see him at the range. PISTOL SILHOUETTE Bret Stuntebeck August 5, 2017 We put 15 entries across the line this month. This was our first match of the year that we didn t have to fire up the wood stove. Temperatures were in the 70 s a perfect day for shooting steel. On to the results of the match. No 40 s this month. Vince Leete posted an U-AAA, 37 followed closely by Richard Nicol with a U-AAA, 35. Steve Bishop posted a nice R-AAA, 34 followed by a P-AAA, 33 both shot with his FA. Joe Stumpf posted a respectable UASHS-AA, 33. I managed a pair of 27 s in UHS-AAA and US-AAA. In Small bore Vince Leete posted a P-AAA, 22. Joe Stumpf posted a UAS-AAA, 35. On the Field Pistol side Vince Leete posted a PAS-AAA, 28 eking me out by one target to my PAS-AAA, 27. Joe Stumpf posted a PAS- AA, 23. I ended up with a P-AAA, 19. Our target setters did a fantastic job getting our targets set. Thanks to all who came out to shoot the match and also to those who stayed to help pick up targets after the match. Until next time shoot straight and be safe. ] We have had the four mercury vapor lights in the parking lot and shotgun range replaced with LED lights. The LEDs are brighter and are much more energy efficient than the old lights. We are now getting bids to replace the lights on the target line on both the rifle and pistol ranges. We will soon have a paved walkway from the parking lot and the pistol shed. This will be a big improvement for all of us who use the pistol range, especially those who have mobility issues or who pull carts or wagons. We hope to have the work done before the winter weather hits. FOR SALE Dave Farrow has a very nice, oak roll top desk in the IPSC range office for sell. (The monitor displaying Dave s picture not included) CARETAKERS REPORT Doug Shellenberger Darrel Behounek, Doug Nash and I replaced four 6x6 roof support posts for the gazebo behind the clubhouse. The old posts were rotted out on the bottom causing the roof to sag. Page 3

4 RESULTS FROM THE FIRST AIRGUN RANGE ORIENTATION Chip Kormas The air guns of our parents, or those that many of our members grew up with, have changed. Although spring driven air guns are still a standard, now precision air rifles and pistols are charged with compressed air from scuba tanks or portable CO2 cartridges. They may have multiple adjustable stocks or grips or look and function like a modern firearm. There are even high powered air guns that are capable of firing a.45 or.50 caliber projectile with energy comparable to that of many centerfire firearms. Your Board of Directors are working on establishing standards and events that will maximize the use of our new Air Gun Range to meet the needs of our membership within the capacity of our facility. The first of two orientation sessions for the new Airgun Range took place on October 14 with approximately 15 club members participating. Those present were filled with questions concerning the use of the range and were eager see the new facility and to try out the precision air rifles or pistols, some of which were supplied by the club or Board Members. Others were anxious to determine if their air guns comply with the capacity of the range. A second orientation is scheduled for November 4 th. The session started with an overview of the range, hosted by myself and Doug Shellenberger, with the design of the range discussed in detail. The facility is set up for precision air guns used for both NRA and International competition. The backstop is made of ballistic material that is rated to safely absorb.177 pellets fired at velocities less than 800 fps. Our target boxes are designed to move up and down to accommodate prone, kneeling, or standing positions and will hold paper targets around 12 inches square with a steel plate that will flatten and retain the pellets. Thanks to our IPSC team, a chronograph was present and was used to determine the velocities of several air guns that were brought by club members. After the discussion regarding the design of the range and once member questions were answered, the shooting started and a few lessons were learned. It was quickly determined that all of the precision air rifles and pistols met the standards of the facility and could be fired without harm to the equipment and without risk to the shooters. As club member air guns were tried, challenges started to appear. It was quickly discovered that consideration for pellet or even BB material is critical. All of the alloy pellets tried, both in.177 and.22, and fired from a low velocity rifle, had pellets bouncing straight back off of the steel plates on our target holders. An angled portable bullet trap was brought up and tried, thinking that an angled plate would reduce the bouncing back of the projectile, but it was found only to increase the likelihood of pellets or BB s being sent back towards the shooter. Lessons learned from this first orientation: 1) Members present were interested in establishing different forms of match shooting and practice times on the Airgun range. 2) Monitoring of the types of air rifles and pistols used is needed. Restrictions on the type of pellet or BB material are equally critical to insure safe and damage free operation of the range. 3) The type of air rifles and pistol present presented a wide range of styles. In addition to the precision guns there were sporting rifles, hunting rifles, and pistols firing BB s or pellets that replicated regular centerfire guns. 4) Exploration of other target holders could expand the use of the range outside of precision shooting such as multitude of paper novelty targets or self-contained reactive targets. Club members interested in shooting air guns are encouraged to attend the November 4 th event to see the range, try out precision shooting, have your questions answered, bring forth your suggestions, and help the Board of Directors develop operational standards for the Airgun Range and determine how our new facility will be used. Being the end of October, Halloween was the natural theme and that s what Jack Knight picked. The course of fire included pumpkins, zombies, and other challenging targets. It was a great way to get the season off to a bang. The targets included five shots on a paper target with the score based on the target ring hit, five shots on a zombie target that oozed green where a head shot was 5 points and a body shot was 3 points, and five shots on a series of single targets including a (very small) pumpkin, round silhouette, heart silhouette, and the heart with a whole in it. Each of those were worth 5 points each (with two shots on the hole-y heart). Jack Knight coaching Jack Knight Scary targets for Halloween When everyone had rotated through and completed their 15 shots, we recovered our targets and Jack compiled the scores. Bob DeLisle was the overall winner, with Jack Knight Jr. as our top scoring (and only) young shot. I m not sure what November will bring for weather, but Karla Hillberg will be cooking up something special for our Thanksgiving course of fire. Bill Sick checks his shot The weather cooperated perfectly as the fifteen or so shooters got out to their positions on the range. Jack s target selection meant that all the targets could be posted at the beginning, with no need to go down range till it was over. Once the shooting began, so did the rain, and Mike Holeman found out the hard way how curly a target can become if it is only stapled in the middle. He still managed to put all his shots in the right place. Page 5
