2 By common consent this was by far the biggest year for rugby sevens since the sport was created all those years ago in Melrose, Scotland. With the teams and unions, players, referees, organisers, broadcasters, partners and world rugby staff all anticipating the sport s inclusion in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games no stone was left unturned in preparation, and an expanded series also visited new iconic global destinations. In the men s series Cape Town, Sydney, Vancouver, Singapore and Paris all provided fascinating new venues joining Dubai, Wellington, Las Vegas, Hong Kong and London, while in the women s Clermont-Ferrand became the final stop after rounds in Dubai, Sao Paulo, Atlanta and Langford. These exciting new venues joined the series at the beginning of a groundbreaking new hosting cycle which also heralded the bold re-branding of the series, in line with the earlier shift from irb to World Rugby. This report covers all aspects of the hsbc World Rugby Sevens series for both men and women with recaps of the 15 breath-taking tournaments. 11 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series Report Australia storm to Dubai crown Round 1 7he Sevens Stadium, Dubai 3 4 December, 2015 At the start of the fourth women s series, Dubai kicked off with three massive upsets and built steadily towards a memorable climax. In the first three matches Fiji and returning core team Ireland left onlookers amazed as they beat Canada and USA before Russia scored the biggest upset of the lot against reigning series champions New Zealand. Australia progressed serenely through and their quarter-final win over New Zealand was a sure sign of things to come as they would go on to take the first Cup of the season, beating surprise package Russia in the final. What they said That was an epic final and to play in front of such a crowd in Dubai was absolutely sensational. We ve put a lot of hard work into pre-season and I was really proud of our performance. 13 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series Report Australia two from two in Sao Paulo Round 2 Arena Barueri, Sao Paulo February, 2016 By the end of the weekend Australia s women would sit with a maximum 40 points in the series, 12 clear of New Zealand and Canada tied for second, and in truth they looked a class apart in Sao Paulo. They also handled the soaking wet conditions in the final with aplomb to see off a very impressive Canada. What they said I m going to let you in on a little secret: the Aussie summer can be horrendous, every afternoon you can get a downpour, so in actual fact the girls are used to training in conditions like this! 15 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series Report Australia see off NZ to score a perfect 60 Round 3 Fifth Third Bank Stadium,Atlanta 8 9 April, 2016 Atlanta was the tournament where Australia s women put one hand on the series trophy. They started with a wobble against a resurgent England but, inspired by player of the tournament Emma Tonegato, finished by seeing off closest rivals New Zealand in a breathless final. Hosts USA had ignited the crowd on day one, going three from three, including a fine win against New Zealand. Ghislaine Landry was a star for Canada as they topped their pool but on day two both North American rivals succumbed to champions Australia. What they said It was great to see New Zealand in a final again we have the utmost respect for them as world series champions and Rugby World Cup Sevens winners, we ve always been chasing them. 17 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series Report England expose chink in Aussie armour Round 4 Westhills Stadium, Langford April, 2016 For the first time in the season someone other than Australia claimed a Cup, England powering to the Langford title to move to third in the standings behind Australia and New Zealand. After such a strong performance in Atlanta, Canada looked destined to go one better when they edged England on day one to top their pool, but the home challenge came undone in the quarter-finals against France. While Canada claimed the Plate, England inspired by player of the tournament Heather Fisher beat USA, series leaders Australia and then New Zealand in a superb final to claim the silverware. When you look at the quality of players such as Emily Scarratt, Danielle Waterman and Heather Fisher coming into serious form, there are some really good individuals in that team. 19 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series Report Canada win in France as Australia clinch maiden series Round 5 Stade Gabriel-Montpied, Clermont-Ferrand May, 2016 Canada claimed the Cup in Clermont-Ferrand, winning an astonishing final against Australia to finish the season third, but it was Australia who had even more cause for celebration in France, winning the country s first series title and confirming their status as top seeds for Rio But in the 170th and final game of the season Canada were the better team, Kelly Russell picking up the HSBC Player of the Final accolade after tries from Magali Harvey, Russell, the superb Ghislaine Landry and Brittany Benn helped them to a win in front of a passionate Stade Gabriel-Montpied crowd. What they said For us it s a massive boost. It s fantastic. Women s rugby is changing and evolving in Australia and we re happy to be leading the charge. Sevens attracts a different crowd from 15s. It may overtake 15s if you think about the number of people playing and its popularity. I see that as a good thing. 23 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series Report Fiji strike it rich in Dubai Round 1 7he Sevens Stadium, Dubai 4 5 December, 2015 Big name players may have arrived from 15s in the shape of Henry Speight, Francois Hougaard and Juan de Jongh, but it was Fiji s band of brothers who served early notice of their title credentials, beating England in the final to cap a gilt-edged weekend of skill-drenched rugby and open up an early lead. USA also impressed, twice beating New Zealand en route to third place to prove their London title months earlier was no fluke. What they said I think it is a fantastic opportunity for the sport, it has the ability to raise the profile of rugby as a whole and certainly for sevens. For the Olympic movement it will provide some benefits too: you now have a new team sport and a team sport where the pinnacle is the Olympics unlike some others like basketball or football. 25 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series Report Blitzboks delight Cape Town sell-out Round 2 Cape Town Stadium December, 2015 This was a crazy weekend of rugby sevens to reward a sell-out Cape Town crowd at the first time of asking the first of five new destinations on the series. Canada beat New Zealand, Scotland beat England and Samoa, Kenya beat South Africa and USA, Australia beat the USA, France beat Fiji, Argentina beat New Zealand... the list goes on but ultimately the one result that mattered most was South Africa Argentina in the final. A nation in ecstasy. What they said It s brutal 14 minutes of non-stop running as well as a lot of contact in between. The skill set that you need for this game is of a high standard. The problem is once you get tired you begin to make mistakes, so the key is to try and not get tired so you can avoid those mistakes. It s a tough thing to do though! 27 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series Report New Zealand hit back Round 3 Westpac Stadium, Wellington January, 2016 The headlines were written in the stars Sonny Bill Williams wins sevens title on debut and so it proved. The SBW show rolled into town but, one trademark offload aside, it was Gordon Tietjens tried and tested that did the business on home soil. Brothers Akira and Rieko Ioane performed brilliantly as New Zealand edged South Africa to claim the Cup on a weekend that saw little in the way of upsets. The one really notable result was a 31 0 win for South Africa against Fiji in the semi-finals, showing everyone that Fiji are beatable. 29 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series Report All Blacks Sevens rain on Sydney party Round 4 Allianz Stadium, Sydney 6 7 February, 2016 Just as we d seen in Cape Town, another new venue embraced sevens with Sydney a sun-drenched sell-out. Even without Quade Cooper not yet sevens-ready hosts Australia were superb against England and South Africa and then looked all set to win the first ever Sydney title before rising All Blacks Sevens star Rieko Ioane spoilt the party to snatch a win. Fiji beat South Africa to third. What they said I just want to thank Aussie, you guys played awesome and this is an awesome tournament that will just grow from year to year. To the fans, all the New Zealanders, thanks for coming out and supporting us. 31 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series Report Fiji strike back as nation recovers from Cyclone Winston Round 5 Sam Boyd Stadium, Las Vegas 4 6 March, 2016 Fiji warmed the hearts of their embattled nation, coming from 15 0 behind at half-time to defend their USA Sevens title in sensational fashion, beating Australia in the final to clinch their second title of the season. Hosts USA also did well, beating Kenya to reach the Cup semifinals before losing by a single score to Fiji. What they said One week after Cyclone Winston struck we went back into camp and all the players said we were going to play here in Vegas. I reminded the boys this week that we needed to remember the people back home who were victims of Cyclone Winston and that we needed to give them something to be happy about after all the devastation. 33 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series Report New Zealand win firstever Canada title Round 6 BC Place, Vancouver March, 2016 The All Blacks Sevens won the inaugural HSBC Canada Sevens, beating South Africa in the final at BC Place. It was a third new venue for the season that provided a sell-out stage and an historic first for sevens too with every match played under the state-of-the-art retractable roof. Hosts Canada were hugely unlucky. Denied a place in the quarter-finals on points difference after losing their first game, they won all five remaining matches to send the crowd home happy. Adam Zaruba s try brought the scores level before Nathan Hirayama s nerveless conversion from the angle sealed the win. What they said It was a tough tournament, they were six really hard games and I think every game came down to the last whistle. It was a huge team effort, I just did my bit and we came out on top. 35 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series Report Fiji win on their hallowed turf Round 7 Hong Kong Stadium, Hong Kong 8-10 April, 2016 Fiji won the Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens, beating New Zealand for a second year running in the final. Jerry Tuwai, Kitione Taliga, Semi Kunatani and Pio Tuwai were all on song as the Fijians won in their spiritual home. South Africa had earlier edged Australia to finish third, while and Japan saw off local favourites Hong Kong to win a core team place on the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series. Australia s captain Ed Jenkins notched his 100th series try and England s Dan Norton went past the 200 mark, but given the end result it was wonderful to see Fiji captain Osea Kolinisau get his 100th try after Pio Tuwai s audacious off-load. What they said Hong Kong still lived up to all the razzamatazz, there was an Olympic feeling around it. We play high-risk but, as Brian Ashton always tells me, it s only a risk if you make a mistake and we didn t make too many in the final. Fiji coach Ben Ryan

37 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series Report Kenya clinch historic first ever Cup title Round 8 National Stadium, Singapore April, 2016 It took 115 tournaments but in their 629th match Kenya s sevens team made history in Singapore. By beating Fiji 30 7 in the final Benjamin Ayimba s team booked their place in Kenyan and rugby folklore by claiming the country s first-ever Cup in the world series. Collins Injera was named HSBC Player of the Final, scoring twice as the Shujaa Pride blew the series leaders away with 20 unanswered first-half points. 39 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series Report Samoa storm TO Paris CROWN Round 9 Stade Jean Bouin, Paris May, 2016 If Kenya s victory in Singapore had come like a bolt from the blue, Samoa s heroics in Paris were even more incredible as they beat Fiji to win their first Cup since December Trailing 26 7 at the break, the Samoans fought back with 22 unanswered points. Hosts France gave the crowds plenty to cheer about across the three days, winning the third place play-off against Argentina, with Virimi Vakatawa at his best. Even in losing the final, Fiji took a giant step towards the series title, leading by 14 points with one round remaining. What they said What a highlight of the tournament it was hearing two incredibly passionate anthems showing giants (literally) of the game reduced to tears before they used all of that patriotism to give absolutely everything in what was an enthralling final. 41 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series Report Scotland shock world as Fiji clinch series Round 10 Twickenham Stadium, London May, 2016 Scotland scored two tries in the final minute to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, beating South Africa amid remarkable scenes to become the sixth different Cup winners in the 10 rounds of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series. Fiji were beaten into fourth by USA but theirs had been a remarkable show of consistency throughout the season and they easily clinched a second successive series title. 44 42 Game analysis and match officials More competitive than ever The HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series is becoming progressively more competitive. From to , the men s teams finishing first to fourth in the standings have won fewer series points per tournament (16.1 down from 17) and won a lower percentage of all their matches (72 per cent down from 78 per cent), year-on-year. They are also winning a greater proportion of their matches by five points or less (17 per cent up from 10 per cent). In the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series A total of 16,436 and 5,413 points were scored in the men s and women s series, averaging 36.6 and 31.8 points per game respectively A try was scored every 71 seconds the ball was in play in the men s series and every 87 seconds of play in the women s series Sixty-four per cent of conversions in the men s series were successfully kicked, with a success rate of 54 per cent in the women s series The ball was in play for an average of 54 per cent of available time in the women s series compared to 49 per cent in the men s series A pass was made approximately every six seconds of play A ruck was formed approximately every 25 seconds of play Restarts, being the main set-piece for contesting possession in rugby sevens, were contested on 73 per cent of all kicks in the men s series, while 61 per cent of all restarts in the women s series were contested

48 46 Digital Rugby fans continue to look to World Rugby s dedicated digital platforms for in-depth news, data-driven and video content before, during and after HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series events. This in turn continues to drive the need for innovation and development of those platforms, and for an increasingly multi-lingual offering. Digital s primary objectives for the season ahead of rugby sevens first Olympic Games were to provide added value for sponsors while also satisfying the global fan s thirst for original and engaging content in English, French and Spanish. Two key activations were introduced: an enhanced video hub housing clips, highlights and features and the Rugby7Stars game aimed at raising the profile of the players in a fun and interactive way. The video hub proved a great success with video views up 70 per cent on the season. Clips of the Las Vegas event were the biggest draw with the Sevens Re:LIVE Carlin Isles is faster than his hair video the single most-watched clip. The Rugby7Stars game was launched ahead of the final six rounds of the men s series and attracted over 10,000 registered gamers from 162 countries. Heading into the season the game will be expanded to include the women s series and will also be delivered in Spanish, French and Japanese. Many of the short-form features created for digital platforms were also played out systematically on the broadcast world feed, delivering added value to World Rugby and the worldwide partners and also helping to provide editorial consistency across the 10 host broadcast partners. This trend is set to continue, and grow, in

Live video proved a big winner with sevens fans across the globe who were able to experience defining moments on the series through Facebook Live and Periscope. Notably, Facebook Live was used with huge success around Cup trophy lifts with live pitch-side actuality and interviews attracting as many as 200,000 live viewers at a time. Snapchat s story feature took the series to new audiences, achieving 4.5 million video views alone, while Instagram takeovers with USA and Kenya helped take video views on the platform above five million as World Rugby s page continues to grow beyond 650,000 fans. Live graphic design illustrations were also introduced for the series to capture the most iconic moments as they happened, capitalising on what is now a popular graphic trend across multiple sports. These illustrations were some of the most engaged pieces of content on social media and will continue to be a core part of the graphic design offering from World Rugby during , having also proved a hit around the Olympic Games.

50 48 Commercial New commercial structure The new commercial structure was devised with the aim of decluttering the commercial landscape with a new centralised sponsorship concept that provides the Series Partners with an annual global platform delivering frequency, reach and access via multiple broadcast and digital channels to a young, affluent rugby demographic. Brand and Visual Concept for the new logo In line with the World Rugby re-brand in 2014, World Rugby revised the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series logo ahead of the season. The World Rugby blue and green infill was replaced with the corporate colour of title partner HSBC, while the HSBC solus logo was integrated below the tournament owner. The silver 7 was added for all series tournaments. All 10 tournaments were encouraged by World Rugby to use the new Series Mark with the addition of the local destination script (e.g. Cape Town), creating the Series Local Mark (Tournament Mark), unifying the sevens tournaments under one consistent brand. HSBC activation outline HSBC s activation for the season continued to offer fans and customers a multitude of engaging experiences, including interacting with their Rugby Ambassadors, honing their skills in World of Sport zones, photos with the series trophy and opportunities to watch the action from their best seat in the house HSBC Hot Seat. From a PR perspective, HSBC commissioned a Future of Rugby report which discussed and evaluated the opportunity rugby has post its return to the Olympic Games. 51 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series Report DHL DHL completed an extremely successful first year as Global Partner to the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series. The consistent DHL thread throughout the series came in the form of the DHL mini-van which delivered the match ball at the start of 400 fixtures. The activation was welcomed by the players who were quick to engage with the Go-Pro camera positioned on the roof of the vehicle to capture the expressions on the faces of those retrieving the ball. This was joined by the DHL Impact Player, a tracking system that drew on the key attributes of tackles, line breaks, carries and offloads to identify the players who were having the greatest impact upon each individual tournament and the series as a whole. The main fan activation came in the form of the DHL clapper banners which helped enhance the atmosphere at every round of the 10-tournament series. As the banners were handed out, fans were given the opportunity to write their own unique message of support. DHL also ran fan activities in the local markets. 52 50 Player welfare Injury surveillance, innovations and law experiments Since 2008 World Rugby has been undertaking injury surveillance studies in international rugby sevens and in 2015 analysed the data from that seven-year period. The overall incidence of injury (108.3 injuries/1,000 player match hours) was found to be 25 per cent higher than for players at the 2007 and 2011 Rugby World Cups (86.5 injuries/1,000 player match hours). One of the key findings in relation to this was the higher incidence of injury in the second half of rugby sevens matches, probably as a result of player fatigue. World Rugby as the governing body is addressing this issue by running a law trial allowing rolling substitutes during matches to see whether this approach may help to mitigate the effects of player fatigue during the second half of matches. World Rugby is also focusing on injury rates in the extended 10-minute halves played in Cup finals. Rolling substitutions There has been an Experimental Law Variation for both the men s and women s series and Olympic Games, allowing a team to nominate up to five replacement players make five substitutions in each match. Players have been permitted to return to play having previously been substituted off. The Experimental Law Variation has been extended for another year to allow for further statistical analysis. Extra travelling squad player For the series of the men s series, World Rugby will trial that each team can travel with a 13th player, in addition to the 12 named in their squad. This measure is to mitigate against teams selecting players carrying an injury, or to give teams the ability to better manage fatigue for the second of two back-to-back events. Roaming medics In line with 15s competitions, for the first time in the season medics were allowed to roam on either side of the pitch, allowing more prompt recognition of injured players. Furthermore, where two team medics were operating, they could then cover both sides of the pitch. Head Injury Assessments The Head Injury Assessment (HIA) continues to be an integral part of improving recognition and management of head injuries in sevens as well as the 15s game. Research confirms that players are now receiving earlier and improved management of head injuries and concussion. Testimonials In 2014 World Rugby established a specialist working group to focus on sevens series player welfare issues. Since the establishment of this group Sevens has seen the introduction of a Tournament Team Doctor, who provides medical services to all teams in the week prior to the tournament and also on game days. In addition, the nutritional standards at all tournaments have been monitored and food quality has been markedly improved. Participation in tournaments also often requires international travel and to minimise the impact of travel World Rugby commissioned the development of a guidance paper, which is available to all teams. Educating: Keep Rugby Clean All players have shown their full support to World Rugby s Keep Rugby Clean educational programme, completing e-learning modules and assisting World Rugby promote the initiative, which has delivered education to more than 15,000 players at World Rugby events including the men s and women s HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series and Olympic Games repechage events. A feature at all World Rugby events, Keep Rugby Clean Day is a key education strategy to deter doping, assist players to make the right decisions and promote clean competition. Keep Rugby Clean Days were run in Dubai and Hong Kong in Keep Rugby Clean is recognised by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) as a leading anti-doping education programme, with its outreach format a mandatory component of all World Rugby tournaments, supporting more than 13,000 players and team management since its launch in 2005 A new education video, aimed at further educating young players about World Rugby s testing process, was also launched online and on social media, aimed at the next generation. The sport of rugby is underpinned by its character-building values, including integrity and the principle of clean competition. Working closely with WADA and the national anti-doping organisations, World Rugby operates a zero-tolerance stance towards drug cheats. 54 52 Reporting and awards After each round of the Women s Series or group (two rounds) of the Men s Series, World Rugby gathers feedback and reports on various aspects of the Series. Amongst those feeding back to World Rugby are the teams who rank their experience using an online system via 100 questions, covering all aspects of their experience. Supporting this, the Player s Association also speak with their representatives on each team to produce a report touching on five key areas: travel, accommodation, stadium, training facilities and general. Finally, World Rugby s Tournament Director for the Men s and Women s Series compiles a third report after consulting with members of their operations ranking operational delivery and performance from 0-5. The combination of all these results gives a percentage ranking of the events and allows World Rugby to give constructive feedback to the Host Unions around areas where they are leading and delivering best practice with a view to growing the the continued growth and enhanced standard of delivery of the Series. Awards In addition to the winners presentations that take place at each round on the Series, there are a number of other awards including: Player of the Year There are two rounds of voting for both the men s and women s World Rugby Sevens Player of the Year Award, presented in association with HSBC. For round one all team managers consult their coaches and players and vote for their top three (opposition) players ranked by preference on a point basis. For 2016, a further round of voting which included commentators input, was held after the Olympic Games with nominees shortlisted at the end of October and winners announced at the World Rugby Awards on Sunday 13 November. HSBC Player of the Final Awarded to the winning player by a HSBC representative after each round, this award is decided by the world feed commentary team. DHL Impact Player Calculated using a simple algorithm that measures the combined number of carries, offloads, line breaks and tackles made by each player in the tournament, this award is presented after each round as well as for the season as a whole on the Men s Series. Dream Team At each men s and women s tournament the world feed commentators and World Rugby digital producers nominate a Dream Team of seven players. At the end of the season, a series Dream Team is announced, in association with HSBC. Best and Fairest At the end of season dinner in London, the referees also make a presentation to the team they consider to have conducted themselves in a way most befitting the values of the game throughout the season. Rookie of the Year Presented to the player deemed to have made the greatest impact over the season, having made their debut that season. Top try scorer Presented at both the Men s and Women s end of Series events, this award goes to the player who scored the most tries in the season.
