1 Regional Cadet Support Unit (Pacific) PO Box Stn Forces Victoria BC V9A 7N (SO3 Trg/RDMIS ) Distribution List CANADIAN CADET MOVEMENT (CCM) MARKSMANSHIP CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES GENERAL INFORMATION AND INSTRUCTIONS 2011/ The CCM Marksmanship Competition is conducted in four stages. Stage one is local practice at Corps/ Squadrons to select the competing members for the unit team. Stage two again this year will be Zone competitions and the details on Stage two matches are enclosed in Annex B. The Zone Stage two matches are designed to make the competition more accessible at the LHQ level and increase participation and the level of competition. This year s Zone competitions will determine which teams will compete in Stage three, the Regional Air Rifle Competition on 31 March 2012 at Vernon Army Cadet Summer Training Center (VACSTC).The winners from this Regional Competition then go on to Stage Four, the National Air Rifle Marksmanship Competition in Quebec from 05 to 12 May In addition to the winning Air Rifle team, one composite team of high scoring individuals not on the winning team will also be selected to attend the National Air Rifle Marksmanship Competition. 3. Some important NEW points to note for this year. The CCM Rules have been revised and there are some major changes; a. The competition will be conducted exclusively with the Daisy 853C air rifle; b. Each Corp/Squadron is permitted to enter either one team or a maximum of three individuals (if they cannot enter a complete team). They cannot enter a team and individuals. A junior is now a cadet who has not reached his 15 birthday by 12 May See rule c. Corps/Squadrons must ensure they use the correct CCM Competition target (CCT2001AR853), which is available through the SO3 Training; d. all firing will now take the form of team matches, that is, the five members of the team shooting at the same time with the adult coach to help them; and 1/3
2 e. Standing shooting will be introduced as part of the competition at the Provincial and National level this year. We will attempt to add it to the Zone Competitions next year. There will be a progressive introduction of standing shooting to the overall score. Initially the value will be one ninth and will gradually increase to one third over the next several years. 4. The recommendations in Annex A are to assist units in organizing and conducting Stage one of the competitions. 5. Also enclosed is an entry form for the BCRA Winter Postal Competition at Annex C. It is an optional.22 competition for Corps/Squadrons who still have anschutz rifles and access to an outdoor range who may wish to participate. Mr. Paul Dudzinski must receive Entry Forms no later than 31 December Validation stickers for the BCRA Winter Postal Competition will be mailed out to those teams that enter. 6. 4 Annex A To 3-4 (SO3 Trg/RDMIS ) RECOMMENDATIONS FOR SELECTION OF UNIT TEAM 1. These guidelines are to assist units in selecting a unit team for competition in Stage one of the CCM marksmanship competition. 2. Competition Rules. The Current Official Rulebook of the CCM Marksmanship Series Championships can be found online on the National Cadet Website under Marksmanship/Championship Series 3. General Information: a. Unit Commanding Officers should appoint one of the unit officers or civilian instructors as the Unit Marksmanship Coordinator. The Unit Marksmanship Coordinator would be responsible for selecting the team or individuals that will compete; b. A Unit Team consists of 5 cadets from the same unit. At least 2 of the cadets must be classified as a junior (see Rule 3.3.1); c. A junior is any cadet who has not reached their 15 th birthday as of the last day of the National Competition of the competition year. This year that date is 12 May See rule of the CCM Marksmanship Rules; d. Units that are unable to field a complete team as per rule may enter up to three cadets that will compete as individuals only; e. Each team member or individual competitor is required to fire 4 competition targets; and f. It is recommended that a unit competition be held to allow interested cadets the opportunity to qualify for the unit team or to be selected as the individual competitors. The Unit Marksmanship Co-coordinator should be the OPI for the unit competition. A 1-2
5 Annex A To 3-4 (SO3 Trg/RDMIS ) 4. Basic Steps to Complete Stage one: a. Read the CCM Marksmanship Championship Series Rulebook; b. Confirm the Unit has use of a suitable facility to convert to an air rifle range; c. Confirm that the Unit has one member qualified as an air rifle RSO; d. Confirm the Unit has the necessary range equipment to construct an air rifle range (directions found in the CCM Marksmanship Manual); e. Advertise to the cadets that a rifle team will be selected. Also advertise that two of the cadets must be juniors; f. Consult with Unit Supply Officer to obtain from RCSU (Pac) the correct targets for competition. Also confirm that the unit has a sufficient supply of pellets; g. Consult with Unit Training Officer to schedule a range day to conduct the competition to select the unit team; h. Determine the course of fire for the unit Competition (i.e., two relays, two targets per relay, 10 shots per target, 30 minute time limit.). A determining factor will be number of cadets participating, number of firing points and the number of rifles available for use; i. Conduct a briefing prior to the competition to inform cadets of the rules and course of fire; j. Conduct competition; and k. Based on the results of the unit competition, select a unit team or individuals to compete in Stage Two of the CCM marksmanship series. A 2-2

The Zone Coordinators are requested to book a location for the Zone Competition and advise both the SO3 Training and all units. Corps/Squadrons should also be aware that the Zone Coordinator will be asking for assistance from all Corps and Squadrons to help run the Zone Competitions. 4. Corps/Squadrons must contact either the SO3 Training or the listed Zone Coordinators to indicate whether or not they will participate in this competition NLT 15 Jan 11. The registration form at Annex D must be used and must be sent by to dougal.salmon@forces.gc.ca or dougal.salmon@cadets.gc.ca. 5. Selection of teams and individuals for the Provincial Championships on 2 Apr 11 will be made from the results of these Zone Competitions. The top scoring team and individual from each of the eight zones will be invited to the Provincial competition. This selection procedure should ensure a fair representation from around the Region. To ensure that zones that have several strong marksmanship teams or individuals are not penalized by this process, a further four teams scoring higher than 1430 and individuals scoring higher than 350 will also be invited to the Provincial Championships. 9 Annex B To (SO3 Trg/RDMIS ) 6. These instructions and recommendations are to assist Corps/Squadrons in competing in Stage two (Zone Competitions) of the CCM Competition. a. Unit Marksmanship Coordinators/adult coaches should obtain a copy of the CCM Marksmanship series rulebook and read the rules for the competition. The current Official Rulebook of the CCM Marksmanship Series Championships can be found online on the National cadet Website under Cadet Training/Common. For all rules cited herein, refer to the Rulebook; b. In the Zone competitions, each team member or individual competitor will fire four targets each; c. The official target for use in the CCM Stage 2 Competition is stock #: CCT2001AR853. The new air rifle target is designed with ten scoring diagrams (also referred to as aiming marks) and two extra diagrams that are for sighting shots only. Only one shot per scoring diagram is permitted (see Rules and Rule ); e. The names of each team member should be written on their targets prior to firing. Prior to commencement of each relay, the range staff should confirm that each cadet will be firing on the correct target; f. Targets must be witnessed by the range staff and signed where the space for Witness is located on the target; g. Targets must be scored by visual inspection or using an overlay scoring gauge (see rule 17.1); i. Once Corps and Squadrons have completed firing competition targets, Zone Coordinators must forward all scores to the SO3 Training by at dougal.salmon@forces.gc.ca or dougal.salmon@cadets.gc.ca. All cadets classified as Juniors (Rule 3.2.1) must be indicated. Fired targets are to be kept by Coordinators in case verification is needed. 7. The following recommendations may also assist Corps/Squadrons that are competing in Zone Competitions for the first time; a. It is recommended that each team member be assigned a rifle and that they only use this rifle to complete all of their competition targets; b. To achieve the maximum score possible the cadets should zero, or sight in, their rifle prior to firing competition targets. The cadet should fire a grouping of five or ten shots at a single aiming mark. Rear sight B 4-5
10 Annex B To (SO3 Trg/RDMIS ) adjustments should be made to centre the mean point of impact. A confirmation group should then be fired. If a spotting scope is available, the rear sight can be adjusted and confirmation group fired during the same relay. For instructions on sight adjustments refer to the Cadet/CIC Daisy 853C Reference Manual; c. A cadet coach is permitted to assist the competitor to pump the air rifle between shots (see rule ). It is recommended that cadets not firing during the relay assist in pumping the rifle for the cadets firing; d. Cadets will fire two competition targets each relay. There is a 2-minute time given after adopt the prone position for hook slings and prepare to fire and then a time limit of 30 minutes per relay. This will simulate the conditions for the Regional Air Rifle Competition; and e. If a spotting scope or a pair of binoculars is available, then it is recommended that a confirmation group be fired at the sighting diagrams on the competition targets at the beginning of the relay. A cadet coach (Rule 11.1), using the spotting scope to see the location of the sighting shots may then adjust the competitor s sight if required, before they begin their scoring shots. Note: any sighting shot that lands outside the sighting box is counted as a scoring shot (see Rule 15.8 and ). B 5-5
11 Annex C To (SO3 Trg/RDMIS ) BRITISH COLUMBIA RIFLE ASSOCIATION CADET/JUNIOR WINTER INDOOR SMALLBORE COMPETITION All Sea, Army and Air Cadet Units, as well as all other Junior rifle shooters in BC are invited to enter the BCRA Winter Postal Smallbore Rifle Competition. BCRA membership is not required to compete. GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS AND INFORMATION Match # 3 CADET/JUNIOR T.R. INDIVIDUAL $3.00 per shooter Rifle mm (.22 caliber) Rifle Sights -Iron Sling -Permitted Jacket -Permitted Glove -Permitted Targets -DCRA Smallbore (1977). 75, 60, or 50 feet as appropriate for distance fired. Round aiming marks. A separate sighting diagram may be used prior to going on score. Course of Fire -Three targets per shooter, 10 rounds per target, HPS = 300 Eligibility -Shooters who, on the final day of competition, have not reached their 19 th birthday, are considered juniors. Completed target returns to be postmarked on or before March 16, 2012 PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS MATCH IS RUN SEPARATELY FROM THE CCM MATCHES INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE MATCH Fill in entry and mail with appropriate fees to BCRA Winter Match Director. Entry deadline is December 31, Claim sheets and stickers will be returned. Place stickers on the back of each target prior to firing. Mail fired targets and claim sheets to Winter Match Director no later than the dates indicated in the respective matches. Please make cheques payable to BCRA.
