2 From the Editor In this Issue From the Editor Committee Notes Incoming Future Events NNI Vintage Rally NI Vintage Championships John Sheppard - Gloworm Gloworm Event Readers' Models - Tangney HLG - Playboy Snr - Witchawks Cover Story Smithsonian Visit Pt.3 Real Vintage Folding Wings 1942 Leader Boards Bargain Basement Miscellaneous Free Flight Notices Around this time of year, those well-intentioned New Year resolutions have been so eroded by forgetfulness and lack of will-power that they are no longer credible goals. No need to feel too guilty, though. By itself, the act of making resolutions shows we care enough to want to improve ourselves, or our world, in some way. Rather than set and then obsess over goals that were probably never reachable anyway, there are other ways to assess progress. One way might simply be to ask "Am I having more fun than last year?" - a valid check, but not one that makes clear where that fun came from or how it may be increased. As much aeromodelling fun comes from doing things better than last time, it's more useful to ask specific questions such as "Which models performed well" and "Which models were not up to par?" This leads on to "Could underperforming models be improved, or would it be better to build other designs?" and, getting at last out of the workshop, "Which events do I need to practise more?" The answers are enough to map out plenty of projects and activities, and that's before asking "What new event shall I try this year?" If you are casting about for a new project you could consider the Classical design that the SIG will be promoting over the next year. Models from the Classical period are those that many of us best remember from our youth, so it is odd that contests for designs from this era have had less support than might be expected. The promotion of a Classical design is intended to focus attention on this neglected era, and on one of the sleekest models of the period. The chosen design is a real beauty with World Championship credentials and is usable in no less than five different events. There are locally produced kits and plans for this design - one that is guaranteed to answer that "Am I having more fun than last year?" question in the positive. 3 COMMITTEE NOTICES New Flying Schedule for Vintage at the 2018 Nationals THERE WILL BE THREE New Vintage RC Classes at the 2018 Nationals. The schedule s below includes Classical 1/2 E Texaco, Classical E Texaco, and Vintage/ Classical Scale Texaco for the first time at a Nationals. These classes will definitely be flown, so you can safely begin your preparations. The twelve known Jumpin Beans will slot into the Classical 1/2E Texaco event. The Gloworm, as well as having a dedicated event, is suitable for Classical E Texaco, Classical E Duration, Classical IC Duration, Classical Precision, and Classic FF Power depending on how the model is prepared. Of course, these classes are still open to any other eligible design. THE 2018 NATIONALS will have separate three-day schedules for Vintage FF and Vintage RC. This change removes the clashes within the overall Vintage Schedule between VFF and VRC that have disadvantaged people wanting to fly both on a particular day. From 2018, the Vintage Schedule will extend over six days, beginning on Day 0, the Registration Day for the Nationals. The Nationals Manager would prefer people to register in advance, but registrations will also be taken on Day 0, after flying.the Committee has decided that to would be best to fly VFF first, so this is scheduled for Days 0, 1 and 2 (note the new 1.00pm finish). The VRC schedule is on Days 3, 4, and 5. THE TABLE SHOWS both draft schedules - minor changes may yet be made. The Committee is grateful to John Butcher for contributing the idea of a six-day Nationals for the Vintage SIG. Bernard Scott, Rex Bain and Wayne Cartwright prepared the schedule. 4 INCOMING Hi Bernard, The below was received from Peter Lloyd who is one of the seventy-five Oldtimer members I forward AVANZ News to. Cheers, Ian Avery SAM 1788, Australia. Hi Ian, I just had a copy of AVANZ News 156 and read with interest about Dick Twomey and enclose a picture of my copy of his Jetex model called the Twizzler from original plans I have. Twizzler was the follow on version of the Firecrest. I have not flown mine as yet. Kindest regards, Peter Lloyd. Last issue s big Lemon and Paeroa bottle brought back memories to Graeme Bradley who has passed on some history of the figure and its aeromodelling connection. The Big Bottle was suggested, and then built, by Colin Mudford, an active modeller who was later to become Mayor of Paeroa. The Bottle was constructed in Colin s garage out of polystyrene, a medium that Colin often used in his models. It was then sheathed in ply that Colin obtained from the then-operating Toyota assembly plant in Thames. Colin used to collect the flattened ply packing cases for model use. Colin was part of a group of fliers that once held the NZ RC Distance record, set by flying from the Thames flying field to Seddon Road on Hamilton s western suburbs. Graeme remembers many trips made with Colin to Levin for flying meets, and one in particular that took place during the oil crisis when petrol was being rationed by the car-less day idea. To make the round trip, Colin s big and thirsty vehicle had to be loaded with jerry cans of fuel, making smoking within the vehicle a risky business. Thanks to Graeme for these recollections. Low cloud caused some delay for those flying Precision and Duration but it was ok for Texaco. Around ten competitors lined up, a bit down on the usual number, as six or so of our staunch competitors were not present. We had about an hour of rain on Saturday afternoon and a stiff breeze on Sunday afternoon, but conditions were a lot more pleasant than at the Nationals. Keith Trillo did his usual excellent time in the ½E fly off with around 26 minutes, I recall, and on Sunday morning I did around 27 minutes in the E-Rubber fly off, a good indication of the conditions. David Squires had an interesting problem with his E Texaco model. With a fully charged battery the motor would stop abruptly after around 6 1/2 minutes, and even on a ground test did the same thing. The batteries were 370mh 2S NanoTech and in both cases they still had about 1/2 charge. After replacing the ESC it was discovered that the signal wire had been cut instead of the battery positive. I can t understand why it worked at all. Can anyone explain this? After I had lost sight of my 80 Playboy due to a cloud of flying ants (and then trying to fly a Bomber) my timer also lost sight of it also while finding a can of bug repellent. David kindly spent nearly 3 hours searching the area where we expected it had crashed. John Danks also did a search and the man with the Bantam across the Gully did a fly around. No luck. A week later, the farmer discovered it when she checked a water trough. There was not much damage, just badly traumatized batteries and a broken prop - a happy reunion followed. 6 NNI VINTAGE CONTEST and RALLY February Airsail Field Arriving at Airsale on Saturday morning we were greeted by a low cloud base of around 300 feet, but it gradually lifted and flying started in buoyant conditions that made good flights relatively easy. Mid morning as the day warmed up, the flying insects arrived, in their millions. They were partly to blame for a lost model as the pilot looked down, swatted a cloud of these pests away and resumed flyinganother pilot's model. His new Playboy was not recovered until much later, in spite of much searching. Sunday started very flat, with dead conditions that only changed when the flies arrived followed by strong winds, followed by rain showers in the afternoon. The E- Texaco one man fly-off signaled the end of flying for the day, and everyone packed up and went home. The forecast might have put some off but in the end both days were flyable, with Saturday being the best.!0 entered and made 26 flights, with only the one mishap. Nice to see Rex Bain come for a look and Angus MacDonald came to try out his vision after some repair work. He was very happy with the result and we look forward to seeing Angus at more meetings this year. Tony Gribble AVANZ NEWS April 2017 Issue 157 Page 6

7 NI VINTAGE CHAMPS 18-20th March Allan Knox The champs have been and gone and many for us are savouring the memories. The summer has been atrocious but we absolutely lucked in with two beautifully warm calm days and a very flyable Monday. The Levin club showed its usual hospitality, the site was beautifully prepared and we were treated to morning and afternoon tea as well as a hot lunch in the club house. Thanks club mate and Mr and Mrs Shorer for the catering and other support. Yes there was some flying too. I attach the results. A twelve strong field turned out for Vintage Precision including locals and some who had never flown the event before like Bob McGrath. A number of other classes were well supported too and we were fortunate to have Keith Trillo and Bernard and Su Scott with us as they cover most of the lesser supported classes and supplied real competition in the overall Championship. Others too, like Barrie Russell and Dave Thornley had come some distance to be with us. There were many highlights for me. Here are some. Stew Cox who came along and ran the scoring desk for us. Thanks Stew, that was a huge help. Jonathan and his wife who made me very welcome in their home. Dinner at the Benton Restaurant on Saturday evening and Bob s tall stories. Seeing the amazing models that Barrie Russell has created. The Slicker was gorgeous and the Popsie was beyond belief. Dave Thornley s huge smile that never went away all weekend. Seeing club mates Ian Munroe and Bob McGrath really enjoying the challenge of Open Texaco and helping each other to centre and fly the lift. This is perhaps the most challenging class of all. They needed to fly for 15 minutes off a tiny amount of fuel. Ian s big TD Coup and Bob s 80 inch Bombers were out of gas in just a few minutes yet both flew out beyond the 15 minutes on at least one round. Keith Trillo s beautiful models. He always has them tuned and optimised. He managed over 30 minutes in 1/2E Electric Texaco with his Stardust Special, a great effort. Bernard who is always very competitive over a wide range of classes ably assisted by Su. Bernard does a brilliant job with AVANZ and in the SIG making a major contribution to our part of the hobby. The locals who just came out and gave it a go with what they owned. Jonathan just said what do I have and what classes might they fit? He covered 4 events in the end with a little help from his friends. All in all it was a great event, enjoyed by all I believe. Thankyou all who participated, lets do it again so Top Left: David with Classical Satellite 1000 and ever-present smile. Top Right: Alan Sissons persevered to complete Precision in 3 rd place. 11 JOHN SHEPPARD ( ) World Free Flight Champion 1960 John built and flew models as a youngster on the family farm at Tairua. The May 1952 Aeromodeller magazine mentions a New Zealand record set by John, for Waterplane (rubber) Junior. He was runner-up to the Junior Champion at the Nationals that year and there was a plan published in the January 1953 Aeromodeller magazine. The "Karoro" as it was named, was a floatplane designed in 1950, powered by an E.D. Bee and was flown from the Tairua estuary.. When the family moved to Ramarama, South of Auckland, John joined the original Papakura M.A.C. and was soon involved in competition. Winning Payload at the 1954/55 Hamilton Nationals, runner-up to the Champ of Champs at the 1955/56 New Plymouth Nationals with good placings in C/L Speed, Free-Flight Scale and Payload. Early modelling expeditions used the family Bradford van and in later years four modellers and their models and gear, packed into John's Mini Minor for trips to the Waikato Champs and other contests. John went to England in 1959 and soon became involved with some of the best U.K Free-Flight exponents. Henry J. Nichols model shop was the Saturday afternoon meeting place where ideas and theories were discussed, accepted or discarded. A model with great performance was lost (flyaway) with only 6 weeks to go to the World champs at Cranfield, so the construction of the "Gloworm" was started J l I l l n ETTE, $t a lq F CRANFIELD, BEDFORDSHIRE AUGUST I, 1960 FIYE SURYTYE I7.MAX MARATHON HUNGARY RETAINS TEA}I TROPHY THnrBpN comperitors made perfect 90O-seconds scores to place as "equal-first" in the 1960 World Champs for free flight power models. In the fly-off, which had to be terminated at the twelfth succeeding round, five of the World's best modellers amassed a total of 5l minutes flying time to prove their point that the Contest rules are in need of revision. l n t 2015 John's crowning achievement was the marathon fly-off at the 1960 Free-Flight Power World Championships. After an extra12 rounds following the 5 round contest, John was one of five who were declared joint winners after all had scored 17 consecutive maximums. The following year, after his return to New Zealand, the same Gloworm model that John used at Cranfield was proxy flown to 4th place at the World Champs, the best placing by any of the "famous five" from the previous year. This wingspan was requested as its 520 square inch area places the model at sweet spots for several power options. AVTEC also produces the Gloworm to the original 60 wingspan which, with an area of 457, just qualifies for a.20 IC engine, but you will need to search out your electric options. Any other sizes with power in conformity with wing area are welcome, as are replicas that are scratch built or use an alternative kit. Any Gloworm - Five Events - One Contest Entry into the Gloworm contest may be through any of the listed events using the rules of that event. Fly your model in the event it has been built for and your score will be recorded normally for that event - the score will also be entered into the one-design contest. To put the five different events on an equal footing, Contest Directors will normalise flight scores by converting them to a percentage of the event maximum. If you max-out, still put in a fly-off score even if it is not needed for that event as Gloworms entered in other events may have made maximum scores. CDs will normalise fly-off scores in the same manner as for the rounds. The Gloworm one-design event will be introduced into the programmes of Vintage contests and rallies starting in September Scores will also be recorded on the Leader Boards. There will be Gloworm events at the 2018 Nationals and Vintage Championships. This will give the model lot of mileage, especially if it is adapted for more than one event: E Duration, E Texaco and Precision could all be flown with one model with changes of battery and prop, and a model built for IC Duration would also serve in Precision. 14 READER'S MODEL RON MAGILL JAMES TANGNEY'S CLASS C HLG THAT TURNED IN 24:02.6 As a new service to readers, Air Trails presents Record Review of interesting models which have established new A.M.A. American marks. Frank Zaic, internationally known draftsman and technical author has been commissioned to do the 3 view sketches. Ensign James F. Tangney, USN, describes how he set the record: The most unusual thing about this model is the use of a built up wing which is quite contrary to usual practice. While well suited to the new rules, the model was designed before the new rules were. A similar model with a smaller stabilizer was used to break the Class C Open record last December. It was necessary to add clay to make the weight rule, but it set a record of about 8:10. "Delighted to be on the cover of the last AVANZ News which John Butcher copied off for me. David Gush deserves all the credit for all my participation in model flying at the moment. I built four new catapult gliders last year and they made a change from the usual Vartanians and Hervats. Two are from Air Trails, the Record Holder by Pop Robber and an un-named model by Jimmy Tangney, also from Air Trails. The other two are by Wally Simmers. Both were originally for indoor, and were world record holders in their day - the Midwest Class A Indoor and the Midwest Class B Indoor." Ron Magill Plans for Ron's building projects have proved hard to track down, but the Jimmy Tangney model was eventually located in Air Trails, Jan 1949, listed under 'Record Review' - no help from the indices on that one. On February 8 the Oakland Cloud Dusters held record trials at Livermore, Calif. The day was perfect. My timer was the Cloud Dusters well known Mom Robbers. The first flight was 20:09 the first 10 of which counted. It landed about 500 ft. away. The second good flight of the nine was about 5 minutes on a weak thermal. Then the wind came up and the next one was an out-ofsight flight of 9:15. Chased on foot for about 30 minutes before it came down. The trailing edge does not blend into the rib curve, but this was done so the average wing section between the ribs would. AIR TRAILS January 1949 AVANZ NEWS April 2017 Issue 157 Page 14

15 READER'S MODEL HARVEY STIVER A Bit of Nostaliga and the Playboy Senior. I received a Playboy Senior semi kitset from Peter Leaver of Hangar One. I choose this as my second semi kit from Peter as I have just finished the construction and test flying of a Buzzard Bombshell, a model I built in younger times. These semi kits are produced by Peter in association with Gwynn Avenell who does a superb job of the laser cutting of both the balsa and ply parts. Full size plans are enclosed in the package along with balsa and spruce strips if required. I highly recommend the addition in your order of the strip wood as they accurately fit the notches without trimming, also some strip wood is of non standard sizes. Age, failing eye sight, and slower responses decided the rekindling my youthful building skills with a few of the models I built many years ago. My model aviation hobby started as a youth living in Wellington in the southern suburb of Newtown near Wellington Zoo and Newtown Park. Over the back fence from our house in Roy Street was the expansive Newtown Park were my building efforts were test flown either successfully or back home to repair. My very first model was a slab sided all balsa sheeted control line model powered by an Elfin diesel motor on short lines. Now to the Playboy Senior. It is an 80 Pylon wing design for free flight designed by Joe Elgin and produced in 1941 by The Cleveland Model and Supply Co. USA. This kitset is produced from the modified drawings of Paul F. Denson which would have been powered by either a Super Cyke or Olsen and Rice 60 spark ignition engine. The single sheet plan is complete with adequate information for most moderately experienced builders. The quality of the wood semi kit is superb with the laser cutting and fitting the best I have seen. I started by building the tail feathers, followed by the wing, which can be either polyhedral or dihedral versions, I chose the polyhedral wing design which in my experience gives greater stability.... continued In the Newtown shopping centre we had a book shop with the owner being an enthusiastic aeromodeller. He stocked Keilcraft and Veron kitsets along with a range of diesel motors. Also, a great stock of designed plans from Vic Smeed and other well known designers. I built numerous Tomboys, a Mamselle, a Pageboy, and a Debutante - just a few of Vic s designs. All were free flight and with the park being in a bowl surrounded by trees, and sometimes having updraft wind patterns, a few got lost either as fly aways or into the trees. My first attempt in radio control was with the Wright System of Radio Control designed by Wellington s Les Wright, fitted into a Veron Deacon. Les, along with Alan Rowe, created the R6B, a shoulder wing design fitted with the Wright relaytor which received a signal from the receiver, then via a rubber band escapement gave rudder only control. The left- centre - right - centre control inputs, with turn held as long as the key was depressed, took a bit of getting used too. The R6B once featured in a duration attempt off the hills above Paraparumu by Alan and Les with many witnesses. Both Alan and Les were active members of the Wellington Model Aeromodellers Club, Alan Rowe being NZMAA President from 1952 to 1954, and in 2001inducted into the NZMAA Hall of Fame. 16 READER'S MODEL HARVEY STIVER The fuselage sides are constructed from 3/16 square balsa layered onto the plan, built one side first then overlay the second on top. I have found in the past the best way to get a square fuselage, of the balsa build up type, is to make three 1/8 balsa formers (not on plan) the first at the firewall position, the next centre of wing and the third at the rear of the wing. Cut out 3/16 notches on each corner and glue the three formers to one of the formed fuselage sides, followed by the second side. Pull the tail together and glue, then add final cross bracing. The three formers add strength to the fuselage, however they can be altered or cut out to allow for internal installation items later. Care should be taken when fitting the wing support pylon. See that the pylon is set vertical to fuselage sides and add the lower cross brace to complete. I chose to cover with Solartex, an easily applied silk type covering. No issues at all with the covering and it looks good with a red fuselage, yellow wing and tail feathers. However, the CG... this is when I faced a problem. With the light electric motor, speed controller, battery and servos all installed I needed 16 ounces of weight to achieve the correct CG. This I felt was an unnecessary addition of weight - the ballast up front needed to be reduced. I added a new 50mm square box to extend the nose and reduce the additional weight required. Following this modification, only 8ozs needed to achieve the C of G, an 8ozs saving. Specifications: Motor: Scorpion Kv Controller: Scorpion 50 amp. Battery: Lipo cell. Propeller: 11/7 Electric Master Airscrew. Regards All, Harvey Stiver, Life Member MFHB Inc. AVANZ NEWS April 2017 Issue 157 Page 16

17 READERS' MODELS Murphy / Scott Jim Clem's 1/2A Witchawk falls just outside the Classical period, but in many respects it is a classic design. It was the editor's first FF Power model and had just the right mix of performance and easy trimming for a beginner. An enlarged version for Kiwi Power was started in July of last year, but completion was slowed by wanting to use it as a testbed for my home-built RDT units that were still being developed. Independently, Chris Murphy was building a similarly sized Witchawk, and this encouraged me to complete mine. PAW CT.09 Chris' uncovered version shows the light and rigid structure of the wing and tailplane. "Currently weighs about 550g uncovered so I m hoping for ~600g completed. Propping may bea bit of a lottery-i m hoping something along the lines of an APC 7.625x3.75 will be around the ballpark there is virtually nothing out there on the performance stats for a G15/19.I m expecting it ought to produce about 30% more power than a G15 so something of the order of BHP-but at what revs?" 19 AVIATION and AEROMODELLING HIGHLIGHTS FROM AN AMERICAN VISIT, 1985 Part 3 Graham Lovejoy Visit to the Paul E Garber Preservation, Restoration and Storage Facility I have always been fascinated with stories of treasures locked away, or hidden for years and then being rediscovered, often by accident. From time to time, one sees photographs of this nature and they always serve to make me think "If there's one, maybe there's more, and "How great it would be to find an old aeroplane / car / motorcycle / model aero engine / cartons of Flying Aces magazines in that old shed on the farm I just drove past!" My desire now has been satisfied somewhat by a visit to the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum Storage and Restoration Facility at Silver Hill, Maryland. I had seen some photos of some aircraft stored there over the years: one in particular stands out, a Heinkel 219 photographed in its disassembled state in a dimly lit hangar, the half-light conditions lending an eerie Twilight Zone effect to the photographs. Therefore, a visit to this place was high onmy list of Things to do In Washington. Free guided tours are available, but one must book in advance so that a party can be made up. Two weeks is quoted but in practise, you could get by with less, but don't bank on it. Despite being in another state, it is only a few miles away from Washington, D.C. and easily reached by bus. The tour commenced at 10 am and we went first into a display area where many fascinating planes were on show, spanning the pre 1914 era through to the present day. Most of these were off the beaten track so to speak and included a Benoist type 12 and a Standard trainer from WWI, many civilian planes from the 1950s, such as the Bellanca CF, Waco lo, Monocoupe 110 "Little Butch", Stinson Reliant and the cutest little autogyro powered by a Pobjoy Niagara Radial engine. I was pleased to see a Jungmeister Aerobatic bi-plane and a Hawker Hurricane, but the jewel of this collection was a Waco cabin bi-plane, resplendent in silver dope with scarlet trim. This was immaculate and apparently had been donated by a couple of guys who used it down Arizona way. It had been replaced with a Beech Bonanza, and they flew the Waco in to donate it to the museum. It is displayed as they received it, a credit to the owners! I should mention the Pesco Special Racer and the Kitten, a strange little biplane with sprung, semi enclosed wheels. It is diminutive and full of character, but the height it is suspended at, about 15 ft, is quite likely the highest it has been! Next stop was the workshops where restoration takes place. My first view was of the fuselage of an Arado M2254 jet bomber of WW2 being painstakingly rebuilt. The remainder of this side of the workshop was taken up by the forward fuselage of a B-29, Enola Gay, which dropped the atomic bomb on Japan. Our tour guide was an ex B-29 pilot and his comments on the operational aspects of this aircraft were most interesting. One wonders at the motive behind this restoration: let's just say that a valuable aircraft is being reconditioned and a part of history will be made available for public viewing. Other aircraft under restoration were a Vought Kingfisher floatplane and a Spad S15. The Kingfisher was used for air/sea rescue and is a beautifully proportioned aircraft, most suitable for a model of any type. The Spad 15 was flown in WWI by an American pilot who is still alive and living in Washington! He drops in fairly often to see how work is progressing on his aeroplane. It is possibly the only WWI aeroplane still retaining the original fabric and the original colours, but after much soul searching, the restoration staff have decided to restore, recover and refinish it to as new A condition, apparently with the hearty support of its original pilot, who wants his aeroplane to look its very best. Other aircraft in the workshop included a just-remwredi Focke Wulf FW 190A, the first I had ever seen. I was so stunned I didn't even take a photo! A Northrop Flying Wing was stored there too, painted bright yellow and was one of the reduced scale wings built to test the concept of Flying Wings. From the workshop, the Voyage of Discovery began! Twenty-five large sheds house the collection and we saw inside five. It is difficult to describe the feeling of stepping inside a shed containing the whole spectrum of aviation endeavour: the failures, successes, famous, and forgotten - are all there, often under one roof. For example, in one shed, one could see the Convair Pogo VTO fighter, Beech D18, Curtiss O-47 Owl, yellow painted V-l Flying Bomb in U.S. markings, experimental Avro Flying Saucer, Arado ARl96 Seaplane fighter, the famous "Swoose", a hybrid B-17D and E airframe used as transport by General MacArthur at times, P-61 Black Widow, Douglas A-26, a Japanese built version of the ME 262 jet fighter, Douglas Skyraider, an unknown Japanese fighter/ bomber and, best of all, a beautifully restored Taylor J-2 Cub. I don't think it would serve any purpose to list all the types I can remember, but it is staggering to realise how much aviation history is in store and in safe keeping. Many unique aircraft are stored - for example, the museum has in store, sole examples of thirteen different WWII Japanese aircraft! In the next articles, I'll describe my visit to Flyline models, the AMA Model Museum, and an American Model Club meeting. Graham Lovejoy. AVANZ NEWS April 2017 Issue 157 Page 19
