2010 St. Ignatius Lacrosse Mission: Our Mission is to develop student athletes of character, integrity and determination who will serve as positive members of the St. Ignatius High School community and the greater society. Always Check the website for up to date information: Coaches: contact for each coach is For example: Varsity Head Coach Patrick McManamon 96 JV Gold Head Coach Phil Wancata 00 Assistant Coach Tom Obrock 95 Assistant Coach Alex Kipp Assistant Coach Brian Hamp Assistant Coach Chuck Flanagan 02 Assistant Coach John Micklitsch JV Blue Head Coach Garen Distelhorst 96 Assistant Coach Mike Cillo Assistant Coach Christopher Killeen 96 Academic Eligibility: Goalie Coach All Levels Walt Siegel We will enforce the eligibility policy of the school. Academics always come first. We encourage the players to maintain at least a 2.8 cumulative GPA. There is no penalty for having a GPA lower than a 2.8, as long as the player remains eligible. All students must pass 5 courses per quarter to be considered eligible. Any student who passes less than 5 courses per quarter is ineligible for a full quarter. The state rules for eligibility require athletes to maintain a 1.7 average. However, any athlete at Ignatius who receives two or more deficiencies (usually given for D+ or lower) at midterms is ineligible, as is any athlete who accrues 2 or more points at a grading period. One point is given for an F, and ½ point is given for a D. Thus, if an athlete has one F and one D, he is eligible, as long as he has above a 1.7 GPA for that term, but an athlete who has 4 D s, or 2 F s, or one F and 2 D s, etc. is ineligible. Any player who is ineligible is subject to miss two weeks of practices and games. His grades are then re checked at one week intervals to see if he has regained his eligibility. Players who are in danger of becoming ineligible should inform the coaching staff as soon as possible. Parents can stay on top of this issue by checking their sons grades online once a week or so. Drug and Alcohol Policy: Any student found to have been drinking or using drugs on or off campus will be suspended for 20% of the season, including practices. They will then be returned to the team and placed at the bottom of the depth chart.
Roster/Cuts/Playing Time: Tryouts begin on Feb. 22 with the mandatory conditioning/no contact period. On March 1 full contact tryouts will begin for both JV and Varsity. Tryouts will last for approximately three six days and will feature at least three practices or scrimmages in which the players may prove their worthiness for inclusion on either the JV or Varsity roster before the first cut is completed. All players will be informed of the coaching staff s decisions in brief individual conversations with the coaching staff. Players who are injured or ill or playing in a winter sport or otherwise out of commission during tryouts may receive a tryout once they are ready if the coaching staff deems it reasonable. Playing time will be awarded based upon the player s work ethic, knowledge of the schemes, attitude and commitment to the team. Parents will NOT be notified if their son is being given more or less playing time, is not dressing for a game, or is being switched to a different line or position. The coaches will directly inform the players of these changes and the reasons for these changes. It is the philosophy of the school and the coaching staff that part of the value of athletics is for a young man to take accountability and responsibility for his own performance. An athlete makes a big leap on the journey toward manhood when he is able to approach his coach with a question about his performance, playing time, etc. on his own. That athlete deserves an honest answer from his coach, and it is the philosophy of this coaching staff that he will get one. The Athletic Director strongly encourages athletes to try to work through any issues on their own first directly with their coach. If a player coach conference does not suffice, parents may meet with the player and coach. If that does not suffice, the AD, player, and coach may meet. The final step is for the AD, player, coach, and parents to meet. Parents are urged to follow this chain of command for issues regarding playing time and other issues. Dress Code, Transportation & Travel: The school will provide bus transportation to away games for all three teams. o From time to time JV Blue and Gold parents may be requested to ride the bus to local games due to coaches work schedules. Players are required to ride the bus to and from each game with their teammates. The dress code for all away games will be a white button down shirt, khaki pants (free of rips and tears) and a St. Ignatius tie. For longer road trips coaches may alter the dress code to accommodate the comfort of the player. In those cases only St. Ignatius High School athletic style apparel will be worn. Sweatpants, sweatshirts, t shirts are allowed but they must be navy, gold or grey. We will not allow jeans or other non St. Ignatius styled apparel. The dress code will apply for all three teams: JV Blue, JV Gold and Varsity. o If a player fails to comply with the dress code he will sit for the first quarter of that game.
Attendance: Room assignments on the road will be made by the coaching staff and cannot be changed by anyone other than a coach. Any player who embarrasses the team, the school, and/or his family on the road will be severely disciplined. To include suspension and or dismissal from the team. Any damage done to hotel rooms, buses, etc. will be paid for by the family of the player(s) involved. Itineraries will be given out and curfews will be enforced on the road. Players must be in their own rooms when curfew calls are made. While out of town the team will eat breakfast together usually followed by a film or team meeting. Most meals will be together as a team The same team rules that apply in the locker room and elsewhere apply on the chartered buses the team takes to games. The bus driver will not leave until his or her bus has been cleaned by the players. The captains are responsible for the final clean up. If a player is going to miss a game, practice or other organized team activity they must inform their direct head coach prior to the absence well in advance. The coaching staff strongly encourages families to plan vacations and players to plan school retreats around lacrosse. Both the JV and the Varsity teams are always in action over Easter break, so please consult the schedule before planning any trips. o If a varsity players misses practice over the Easter Break he will be suspended two games for each day of practice missed and placed on the bottom of the depth chart o If a JV player misses practice over the Easter Break he will be suspended 1 game for each day of practice missed and placed on the bottom of the depth chart If a player is absent from school, even for one period, by rule he must miss that day s game or practice. There are certain exceptions to this rule, including funerals, doctors appointments etc... Call the Dean of Students if you have any questions. If a player is absent from school on the day of a game or practice, he has to sit out that night s game(s), but he does NOT have to miss any other games that week as long as the absence has been excused by the coaches prior to the absence. Equipment: The school will provide game uniforms. All game uniforms must be returned at the end of the season, or the family will incur the cost of replacing the jersey (approximately $90 per jersey). Players are expected to regularly launder their uniforms and take care of them throughout the season. Do not ball up jerseys and shorts and place them in your bag. All players trying out or playing on any team is required to purchase a pair of practice shorts and also a suitable practice penny. If a player is selected for the varsity team, the school will provide an alternate Gold helmet. This helmet is the property of the school and can be purchased for $125 at the end of the season. All players must have a navy blue helmet. It is a penalty to have a helmet of another color (even black), so no student will be permitted to play in a game without a navy blue helmet or Gold helmet for varsity.
Captains: All other equipment is to be provided by the players. Gloves should be blue or blue and gold if possible, but at the end of the day, all equipment should be chosen for comfort and safety s sake rather than style. Practice Policies: The team will nominate several players for Captain. The coaches will affirm the vote of the team. The coaches reserve the right to reject any nomination and appoint a player of their choosing. A captain will be selected based upon his values matching that of our mission. o Character, hard work, discipline, sportsmanship o Must exemplify ability to focus team on goals o Must hold other players accountable for actions on and off the field The captains are responsible for policing the locker room and bringing any concerns of the team to the coaching staff. The captains are the liaisons between the coaches and the referees and as such, must be alert in case they are called on to discuss penalties or infractions with the referees. If a captain is not performing his duties or is not setting a proper example for the rest of the team, the coaching staff reserves the right to strip him of his captaincy and replace him with someone else who is up to the task. Captains are responsible for the enforcement of the team rules at practice as delineated by the coaches. Captains are responsible for the promotion of the teams games at school and the announcement of the teams results over the PA. The captains will initiate and lead the pre practice and pre game warm ups. All Captains will exemplify the philosophy and mission of St. Ignatius High School and St. Ignatius Lacrosse. Players should be on time to all practices (on time means being fully dressed 5 minutes before the official start of practice). o Practice begins on the coach s whistle; if you are late the team will run 1 OB for each person that is late. The Coaching staff will assign duties for setting the field prior to each practice. It is the captain s responsibilities to make sure that those duties are executed each day. Every practice will begin with a team stretch and agilities and end with a cheer. The team will run any time all players do not have the proper equipment on during practice (this includes mouth guards, helmet straps, and appropriate jerseys). No laying or sitting on the field at any time. Players may take a knee and remove their helmets but must remain on the track and they must remain alert to reenter a drill Players should use free time before practice to work on their individual skills. Players will jog to get back in line and out of their teammates way once their turn in a drill is done. Players will jog between drills to help the coaches set up the next drill. This includes helping with cage and cone placement. Players should work on and try trick shots or other advanced skills in practice, not in games.
Game Day Policies: At the end of every practice, the team will conduct a ball hunt and only goalies or those designated by the coaches may remain in the middle of the field. The ball bags should be carried back to the designated spot as instructed by the coach. This task will be assigned to the underclassman or rookies on the varsity team. The Captains should not leave the field until it is completely cleared. Players must be in the locker room one hour before all games. Any player who is not present 60 minutes before game time will be considered late and will sit one quarter unless there are acceptable reasons. No cell phones in the locker room on game day. IPods, headphones, and other music are acceptable, but must be turned off when the coaches deem necessary, so that game strategies and motivation may be discussed. Players who do not dress due to injury, etc. are expected to help out with charting statistics, filling water bottles, opening the locker room and other duties. Players must be fully dressed and taped 30 minutes prior to game time. The pre game talk will culminate in a prayer before the team heads onto the field for warm ups. The Varsity team will be in the end zone or other designated area with 5 minutes remaining in the JV game beginning their stretch. The starting goalie will always lead the team out onto the field, followed by the captains. It is the players responsibility to bring the ball bag and other designated items to the field. The captains will run the pre game stretch. Captains are also responsible for running the on field warm up according to the instructions they have been given by the coaching staff. All players not in the game must stay in the second lane of the track. According to state rules, home teams need to supply the games balls used during play and on the end lines. SIHS will provide 12 balls for the end lines and the face offs. The captains are to obtain the balls from the coaching staff and give two (2) game balls to the scorer s table and place 5 balls on each end line after both teams have completed their warm ups The back up goalie should gather the balls after warm ups and return them to the sideline. Captains are in charge of the ball hunt after each game. During the National Anthem, the players will remove their helmets and face the American flag at all times. Americans Supporting Americans (ASA) ( usa.org) This season the lacrosse program will be Fostering a unit from the 101 st Airborne (Screaming Eagles Air Assault Division) currently preparing for their next deployment. Our unit is based out of Fort Campbell, KY. Believing that a strong, supportive connection between young men and women of our armed forces and the civilian communities they are ready and willing to serve is crucial to morale, ASA has committed itself to building and strengthening this link.
The ASA Foster A Unit Program provides the opportunity for our lacrosse program to support the morale of troops serving in military units both at home and overseas while they wait for adoption through the ASA Adopt a Unit Program. We will foster a military unit by sending one or two rounds of letters and/or care packages to troops who are serving in harm s way. We will write letters and organize care packages for the troops in our company. The entire lacrosse program will challenge the St. Ignatius High School community to contribute to our care packages. A care package can contain toiletries, magazines, books, gum, candy, instant soup, writing materials etc.. As a sign of our commitment and support to our Unit each player will wear the insignia of the 101 st Airborne on their helmet this season. Parents Committees: Once signed up for a committee it is the member s responsibility to fill their spot should they decide to leave/quit. If son does not make team we will fill your spot.
