(4) NCAA Tournament (Chapel Hill, N.C.) The Ohio State women s basketball season literally had it all. There was good. There was bad. There was elation. There was heartbreak. There was uncertainty. There was promise. But the way the season ended, it left everyone wanting more. The year started with the bad right out of the gate. In a three-week span in October, three players went down with ACL injuries. Freshmen Makayla Waterman, Chelsea Mitchell and Kianna Holland were all lost before the season even started. That left the team with a great deal of uncertainty. How are you going to manage with just seven players? What happens when you get tired? What if three players foul out? All valid questions that clouded the start of what looked to be a promising year. That led to one of the more remarkable moments of the season in the bringing back of Amy Scullion. Scullion had originally decided to forgo her final season of eligibility as she enrolled in med school at Ohio State. But her selflessness kicked in when she saw her teammates in need. Amy rejoining the team showed the rest of the group what playing for your teammates really meant. The first few games of the season were indicative of a team with three freshmen starters and just four players on the roster with collegiate game experience. The Thanksgiving trip to the Virgin Islands was not only a welcome get-away from the impending Ohio winter, but it was also a great indicator of the year to come. Coach Mc- Guff would be lying to you if he said he wasn t a bit worried about how his short-handed team would respond to three games in three days. The opening win over a very game Clemson squad showed the team had what it took to win a close game down the stretch. The Wichita State game showed the team that it had to be locked in every game or it doesn t matter how talented you are. Then the double-overtime win over a Florida Gulf Coast team that would lose just three games all season showed not only the team s fight, but that it can win any game no matter the circumstances. Those games in paradise led to a very solid end to the 2014 calendar year which featured a stretch of four-straight games against ranked teams. The Buckeyes won three of those games, including blowouts of West Virginia and Rutgers. Those wins would go in the good category. The first half of the Big Ten season was a bit up and down. Scoring 103 three points in a route of the Hoosiers in Bloomington was followed by allowing 100 points to that team up north in an overtime loss. After falling behind by 20 points on the road at Iowa in early February, the Bucks rallied to make it close down the stretch. That comeback, coupled with erasing a 13-point deficit over the final nine minutes in a win over the Wolverines seemed to give the team life heading into the final regular season push. But a trip to Champaigne on Valentine s Day turnedup no love and resulted in a setback. That was the bad. Something clicked after that loss however as the team rolled to a win over Purdue and then played perhaps its best game of the year in a victory over Iowa in the final home game of the year. Those wins were the start of a six-game win-streak that propelled the Bucks into the Big Ten Tournament Championship Game against top-seeded Maryland. Facing another double-digit deficit in the second half, the team rallied and had chances to secure its first Big Ten Tournament title since The eventual threepoint loss to the Terps only fueled the team s drive towards the NCAA Tournament. Making its first tournament appearance since 2012, the Buckeyes knocked-off CAA Champion James Madison in the opening round and that sent the team into a matchup with North Carolina with tons of confidence. Facing the Heels on their home court, the Bucks fell behind by 23 points in the first half. But like it had all season, the team refused to give in and fought all the way back to tie the game. At this point, we all know that UNC s final shot at the buzzer would go in and the season ended way too abruptly. That game featured the bad (first half), the good (the comeback), the elation (game-tying three-pointer) and the heart-break (the end). While the initial shock was hard to handle at first, everyone left the locker room that night in Chapel Hill knowing that this team went through something special this season. It set the building blocks for what could be an exciting run. The only member of the team not returning next season is Dr. Scullion but her impact this year will undoubtedly leave a mark on everyone for years to come.

Scoring Inside = Wins The Buckeyes are led in scoring by its perimeter players but when Ohio State wins the battle inside, it usually wins games. Ohio State scored more points in the paint than its opponents 20 times this season and won all but two of those games. Under McGuff, the Buckeyes have a 30-9 record when scoring more points than its opponents in the paint. Magic number 70 Score 70 or more and good results usually follow. Since the start of the season, Ohio State is when scoring at least 70 points, including 21-7 this year. Year Scoring 70+ Scoring Totals But Scoring 80 is better If scoring 70 points is good, scoring 80 is better. Head coach Kevin McGuff s style of pushing the ball up the court leads to more possessions and hopefully more points. Since he took over at the start of the season, the Buckeyes are 24-3 when scoring at least 80 points. McGuff is with the Buckeyes over his first two seasons. The Ohio native also coached nine seasons at Xavier ( ) and two seasons at Washington ( ). Cooper added a spark Transfer Shayla Cooper became eligible to play on Dec. 22 and she provided an immediate spark just when the Buckeyes needed it. She scored 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting and pulleddown six rebounds in her debut against the Mountaineers. Cooper then scored a career-high 19 points and pulleddown a team-high nine rebounds in the win over No. 25 Northwestern on Jan. 4. In the regular season-finale against No. 23 Nebraska, Cooper grabbed a career-high 18 rebounds to go along with 13 points. The Norcross, Ga., native notched six double-doubles on the year and averaged 10.7 points and 7.8 rebounds in 23 games. The Buckeyes were 16-7 with Cooper this season and averaged over four points and over three rebounds more per game with her than without her. 6 Triple Double-Double In Ohio State s upset of No. 11 Iowa on Feb. 21, three Buckeyes recorded double-doubles. Ameryst Alston had the most impressive double-double as she scored a game-high 29 points and dished-out a career-high 11 assists. It was just the second double-doubles of her career. Shayla Cooper pulled-down a game-high 12 rebounds to go along with 14 points for her third double-double of the year. Alexa Hart scored 17 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and swatted four shots. That marked her team-leading ninth double-double of the season. MITCHELL Sweeps B1G Weekly Honors Two this season, Kelsey Mitchell swept the B1G Weekly honors as she was named Player and Freshman of the Week on Dec. 23 and Jan. 26. She earned the award on Dec. 23 after scoring an OSU freshman record 39 points in a romp of No. 18 West Virginia. The Jan. 26 honor followed her record-setting performance at Purdue where she scored 31 of her Mackey Arena record 37 points after halftime. Thanks Amy!! One of the best moments of the season with the addition of Amy Scullion. Scullion graduated last May with a degree in nutrition and decided to forgo her final season of eligibility to enroll in med school at Ohio State. After the Buckeye roster was hit with a rash of injuries in October, Scullion volunteered to help the team and rejoined the squad in mid-november. Her selflessness and sacrifice for the team immediately won over her teammates new and old. In her first game this season, Scullion grabbed a teamhigh seven rebounds in just 14 minutes in the win over VCU. She played in a total of 25 games this season. Her best game was an 11-point showing at Michigan when she was 4-of-4 from the floor and made all three of her three-pointers in just nine minutes of action. Scullion played in 99 games as a Buckeye. She made 34 starts and averaged two points and two rebounds per game during her career. On Fire From Deep On Jan. 15, against Minnesota, Kelsey Mitchell knocked-down a school-record nine three-pointers. That broke the previous single-game record of eight which she matched earlier in the year. Caity Matter had twice made eight three-pointers in a game in 2003 and 2005 while Marscilla Packer also made eight in a game in Mitchell s 20 three-point attempts against the Gophers were also a Buckeye single-game record, topping Marcie Alberts 15 attempts against Iowa on Dec. 30, Mitchell made six of her nine three-pointers in the first half. Craft -- It s not ALL about scoring Junior Cait Craft was instrumental in the Buckeyes victory over No. 18 West Virginia even though she scored only three points. Craft led the team in rebounds with eight, assists with seven and steals with four. The eight rebounds tied a career-high and the seven assists set a new career-high. Her four steals marked a season-high. WE See You Lisa!! The game against Western Michigan on Dec. 14, was undoubtedly redshirt-sophomore Lisa Blair s best game of her career. Blair played a career-high 22 minutes, scored a career-high 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting, grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds and blocked a career-high five shots. That was the first double-double of her career. She smashed her previous career-highs of four points, five rebounds and four blocks. What A Night In Bloomington The Buckeyes stormed into Bloomington on Jan. 8, and enjoyed one of their best nights in a long time in Assembly Hall. Ohio State scored 103 points which was not only the most points for an OSU team in Assembly Hall but it was the most points ever for an OSU team against Indiana. The previous record for points in a game at IU was 81 on Jan. 17, The overall record against IU was 99 set on Feb. 12, 1993 in Columbus. This game also marked the first time the Buckeyes scored 100 points in a B1G game since scoring 105 in a victory over Northwestern on Feb. 9, Indiana came into the game leading the B1G and was 7th in the country in three-point percentage defense at 23.6 percent. The Buckeyes were 10-of-16 from long range for a season-best 62.5 percent. IU s leading scorer Tyra Buss (13.3 ppg) was 0-10 from the floor and finished with just three points and four turnovers. Indiana s 28.1 percent from the floor was its worst shooting performance of the season. Waterman, Mitchell, Holland Lost For The Year The injury bug hit the Buckeyes hard this season. Freshmen Makayla Waterman, Chelsea Mitchell and Kianna Holland all suffered knee injuries in preseason practice and will miss the entire season. Waterman suffered her injury in the team s first official practice of the season on Oct. 6, while Mitchell was sidelined following her injury on Oct. 24 and Holland on Oct. 31. The injuries were big blows to an already young team. The Buckeyes had just eight healthy scholarship players on the roster before adding Amy Scullion to the roster in mid-november. Waterman was a top-35 recruit nationally coming out of high school. She helped Fairmont to the 2013 Ohio Division I state title where she scored 24 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in the championship game. Waterman was named to the 2013 state tournament Most Outstanding Player. Mitchell was a key cog in the Princeton High School wheel that rolled to the Ohio Division I State Title last season. She averaged 7.0 points and 1.8 rebounds per game last season and was named a 2014 Cincinnati Enquirer Division I All-Star. Holland transfered from Duke last season would have been eligible to play on Dec. 22. She is an explosive scoring guard that averaged over 35 points per game as a senior in high school. Holland was a Parade Magazine finalist for the National High School Player of the Year as a senior and set five school-records including career points (1,851) in just three seasons.
