Literally and figuratively - We made It! We ve worked hard - all of us - at raising the funds to make this European Tour a reality for our student-athletes. And for all of your support - WE THANK YOU for helping us MAKE IT HERE! We arrived in Amsterdam at 10:30 a.m., which was 2:30 a.m. Milwaukee time. It was a red eye - 7 1/2 hour flight from Chicago direct to Amsterdam. Although many of us didn t get much sleep and had cobwebs in our heads, we still found the will, the determination and the stamina to beat the U20 National Team of The Netherlands. It was a hard-fought victory for our team. Their team had two athletes, a strong power forward and finesse off-guard, who will be playing in America next season. They were a physical team who executed an open style offense. They set a lot of on and off the ball screens and did a nice job of attacking the basket off the dribble and with the pass. I was proud of our student-athletes focus and determination in the victory. Amsterdam is a bustling historic city with narrow sidewalks and an unbelievable number of bikers. When we arrived at the hotel we took a walking tour of their Centrum (City Center) that had cafes, restaurants, shops and crossed canal after canal. We are all still in awe at the fact that We are Actually Here. We are so grateful for this opportunity to represent UW-Milwaukee, our Athletic Department and our Women s Basketball Program here in Europe. At this point, I can promise you that they are making you all proud! Thank you again for your support of the Panthers. Panther Proud, Coach Sandy Botham The team after a day full of sightseeing in Amsterdam Traci Edwards gets set to tip off before the Panthers first game in Europe. Panther Travel Blog - May 22, 2008 Lindsay Laur WE ARE IN EUROPE! We all can t believe that we are this far away from home! It has been an awesome experience so far even though we are running on very little sleep. Amsterdam was a real eye opener! The lifestyle and culture is so different than ours, especially with the bikers, smokers, coffee shops, and women under red lights. Milwaukee poses with The Netherlands U20 National Team Crazy! Then this morning, we had breakfast at the hotel and bused over to Anne Frank s house. What happened to her and her family is extremely sad. What I didn t know was that her father, Otto Frank, survived through the concentration camp s liberation. At the end of the tour there was video of him speaking about his family and his daughter s diary and his feelings toward the diary. After that we spent the rest of the day wandering the streets of Amsterdam. Typical tourists, we were in and out of gift shops and restaurants enjoying the culture and stopping to take pictures at almost EVERY canal, and almost getting hit by bikes, mopeds and cars every time we walked! At about 3pm Holland time we met up and traveled to Belgium and we were stuck in rush hour traffic for about 3-4 hours! Once we got settled into our hotel in Mechelen we went to eat at a local brewery. Tomorrow we are spending time in Brussels and playing against the Belgium U20 National Team!

2 Panther Travel Blog - May 23, 2008 Stephanie Schell Hello to everyone back home! I know you have read all the We re in Europe! headlines from the previous two blogs, but this is my first one and I am still just as excited that we are here in Europe. Today started a whole new part of our trip. We got a glimpse of Mechelen, Belgium, last night, but today we traveled and explored Brussels, Belgum; the capital of all of Europe! After waking up, enjoying some breakfast, and about a half-hour bus ride we found ourselves at a very historical site in Belgium; Fort Breendonk, a concentration camp from World War II. Clearly, this part of the day wasn t overly happy and exciting like our other stops, but it was a very moving experience. Many emotions were scattered through each member of our team as we toured the areas where hundreds of human beings were held captive, tortured, and some even killed. We all were grateful for getting a chance to see such a rich part of history, but we were definitely ready to get out of there and head to Brussels later in the afternoon. When we got to the city, our wonderful tour guide Kenny led us to the town square. Here we saw the Belgian Parliament building, along with many other immaculate structures and architecture. Also, we made sure to stop and see the famous statue of the little boy peeing (I didn t quite understand it either, but it was a pretty interesting site to see). We got some lunch as a team and then headed out to explore the city on our own. I think the winner for favorite part of Brussels for the day was the waffles with chocolate, whipped cream, and fruit on top...oh boy, were those delicious! Once 5:00 rolled around, it was time to hit the road to make it to our 7:00 game. We played the U20 National Team of Beligum and won It was another great win for us. With our big girls leading the way 27 points (Traci), and 14 (both Katie and Jenilee) we got ourselves another victory. They were a fast-paced team that liked to push the ball in transition. Their intense defense caused a few minor problems, but not enough to slow us down. The victory was celebrated afterwards with dinner and a picture with the opposing team. The night ended with a team-bonding bus ride back to the hotel. I m not going to go into detail about it (because some things that happen in Europe need to stay in Europe) but I will say that there was some singing, and also some rap battles taking place. The craziest thing was, it wasn t just us players entering the fun...feel free to ask the coaches and staff about their additions to the memorable bus ride! :) Game #2 Milwaukee Panthers 92 Belgium U20 National Team 70 May 23, 2008 Leuven, Belgium Milwaukee FG 3PT FT Reb PF Pts Ast TO Blk Stl Traci Edwards-F Jenilee Klomstad-C Jodie McClain-G Markita Barnes-G Jineen Williams-G Turquoise McCain Jody Crumble Lindsay Laur Danae Russell Stephanie Schell Meredith Onson Katie Fournier Aubri Rote Milwaukee Belgium Score by Periods 1st 2nd 3rd 4th Total Milwaukee Belgium U20 National Panther Travel Blog - May 24, 2008 Lindsay Laur Like Steph said, these late night bus rides and rap battles are highlighting our trip along with all the beautiful sites and structures. Today we traveled to Antwerp, which is one of the biggest ports in Belgium. We walked from the port to the town square and once we got there we saw a large statue of a man holding his hand in his other hand. Our tour guide Kenny told us that a long time ago, in order to get into the city you had to pay a tax. If people didn t have enough money to pay, they would cut off their hand and throw it into the water then they could get in. The name Antwerp literally means hand throw. We had about two hours to tour and sightsee in Antwerp which was filled with beautiful buildings and churches, much like Brussels. Loud music filled the air when we came across basketball in the square (look, I m rhyming without even trying!) Similar to Gus Macker there were tons of boys playing 3 on 3. We walked down streets filled with chocolate stores, waffles places and tons of clothing stores as Antwerp has produced many fashion designers as well as fashions around the world. It is also the diamond capital of the world. UWM and the Belgium U-20 National Team after the game After touring Antwerp we ate and headed to our game. We played DBC Houthalen, a professional team in Belgium s first division. It was a pretty sloppy game but we came out ahead once again, 73-68! Aubri, Meredith, Jodie, Lindsay and Jenilee pose in front of one of the beautiful buildings in the city square of Brussels After that we had pizza and mingled, hopped on bus to hear some jingles (rhyming AGAIN!) After (Aubri) Rote s songs and my back up we started rap battling. For the record, I have been the reigning champ for a while now, but Steve Lautz, yes Compliance director/assistant AD Steve Lautz, burned me, our manager Becky and creamed Coach Mo! We will never look at Steve the same way! Y all reading this, must ask the coaches all about this, as these are some of our most memorable times here :)

We experienced another exciting day here in Belgium. We started the day a little earlier today since we had about an hour and a half bus ride to where we were going. It was well worth it though. We visited the city of Brugge. It is known for being one of the most visually beautiful cities in Belgium and it definitely lived up to its expectations. Although we experienced our first bit of rainy weather earlier in the morning, the city s canals, gardens, and churches and buildings still looked amazing. We walked around the town square, did a little shopping, and some of us even took horse-and-buggy tour rides before we all met up and got lunch together. After a few pit stops for our last chance at Belgian waffles, we were back on the road to get to our final game. Today we played one of the highest elite teams in Belgium. We came into the game knowing it was going to be a tough battle, and it sure was. The opposing team had some great players, including candidates for Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year in Belgium. After a slow start by us, we battled back and made it a very close, intense game. Unfortunately, we were given our first and only loss of the trip. Everyone played hard and fought back well, despite the questionable officiating calls being made. So that was it, the basketball part of our trip is over. It s hard to believe that after all that work we have been putting in over the past few months, our four games are over with. But I will say, we are all very pleased with how it payed off--with our 3-1 record here. Jenilee on the walk up Waterloo To end the day we had a team dinner provided by the oppposing team, along with a great toast and speech given by Coach Botham that summed up the sincere happiness and appreciation we all have for being given this opportunity to play over here. After that, everyone was in total agreement: it s officially summer time... let s enjoy our last night in Belgium, and then onto Paris! 4 Panther Travel Blog - May 26, 2008 Assistant SID Kevin Conway Mental toughness has been a phrase thrown around in various situations this week, but it was no more appropriate than yesterday. The day started as we packed up in Mechelen and headed for Paris. One stop along the way was Waterloo, where Napoleon lost. If you have never been to Waterloo, it is 226 stairs to a 28-metric ton statue of a lion. The view is amazing, but is easily trumped by the relief of sitting down at the top. The site also features a panoramic painting/diorama of the battle of Waterloo. After the workout... er... sightseeing stop, it was on to Paris. The traffic is amazing. I have been to New York and Chicago, but that did not prepare for the spectacle that is traffic with no lines and a lot of cars. Francis, our bus driver, gave us a quick tour of where many of the monuments are before taking us to our hotel near the Eiffel Tower. We set out on two separate tours, the first group, which featured 16 people in our traveling party, did a boat tour. The other 10 of us planned to see the Louvre before heading to the Notre Dame Cathedral to see and meet for dinner. Well, the Louvre was closed at 6 p.m. The Cathedral was closed at 6:30 p.m. So, we saw neither. Rather, we hit the metro and headed to the Arc de Triumphe. To put it mildly, it was awesome. More stairs, but the view was well worth it. Mental toughness number two was the estimated stairs (Coach Roux counted up and down and came up with two numbers) up to the top. Once there, you could see all of Paris. It also allowed an opportunity for great pictures with the Eiffel Tower in the background. Our group, with new plans thrown out in haste, was a wee bit late to dinner, but it was hardly noticed. We ate at a restaurant that translates to The Recruiting Sargent. A brief history, to get people to enlist, the sargent would lure them in with all you can eat meats, cheeses and chocolate, with all the wine they could drink. Then, when properly motivated, he would get them to enlist in the army. Dinner was great. We needed the energy, as mental toughness number three came when we found out the metro was closed. A man told us it was a 20 minute walk to the Eiffel Tower and, being the naive tourists we are, we walked... four miles. Anyway, it is great to be back at the hotel and tomorrow we have the Eiffel Tower to look forward to in the morning... which is a more manageable two blocks and features a novel concept called an elevator. Becky at the Princess Diana memorial Panther Travel Blog - May 24, 2008 Lindsay Laur Most of the team caught in Paris traffic I m on a boat, on the Seine River, in Paris, relaxing and taking in the sights with my teammates and coaches... ahhh, life is good. Still on very little sleep, we are loving Europe! Paris is amazing. After the Arc de Triumphe yesterday, I didn t know how much better it could get. But, after seeing the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, Saint Chappelle and the many streets of Paris, I was truly breathless. Our feet hurt from walking all over while our eyes are closing and we faced a torrential down pour at times, but how many times are you in Paris? At the Eiffel Tower we went all the way to the top and enjoyed another set of amazing views of this beautiful city. Another highlight of the day came at lunch. I absolutely loved the waffles in Belgium and just had to try the crepes in France. I got a chocolate and banana crepe and it lived up to expectations. Trainer Dave Beine, Katie, Meredith and Mrs. Klomstad take in the view from the top of the Eiffel Tower The day was not without its low points. The metros in Paris are often cramped and uneventful. But, today, we got our money s worth (or 50 Euros worth). Apparently, you need to keep your metro ticket. We were unaware of that fact and when we left the station we were stopped. Two of the people in our group were without and were forced to pay a fine. There was a flurry of French, but we did recognize the word police if we did not pay the fine. Despite not making it to the Louvre before closing time, a group is still able to smile and take a picture in front of it. But, we did not let that ruin our evening. We had another amazing meal and here we are on a boat tour of Paris. Tonight we will get our last chance to enjoy this city before trying to make a last-ditch effort to get into the Louvre in the morning.

7 MILWAUKEE MILWAUKEE PANTHERS PREVIEW PANTHERS HAVE EXPERIENCE, TALENT TO MAKE PUSH FOR LEAGUE TITLE IN 2009 Milwaukee boasts largest senior class in team s Division I history With the largest senior class in its Division I history, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women s basketball team will look to utilize its experience and parlay it into a Horizon League title and a trip to the NCAA Tournament. Three of the Panthers five seniors are in their fourth year with the program and had a taste of championships and post-season play as freshmen in The group is looking to go out on the high note they came in with, getting help from a strong group of underclassmen to do so. All told, head coach Sandy Botham returns three starters and 12 total letterwinners from last season. Included in those figures are senior Traci Edwards, the 2008 Horizon League Player of the Year, and fellow starters senior Turquoise McCain and junior Jodie McClain. The trio of starters each averaged over five points per game, including a school-record 20.6 pointers per game from Edwards. Also returning are three sophomores who averaged between 5.1 and 6.4 points in Maurika Hickman, Lindsay Laur and Jineen Williams. Also back are seniors Markita Barnes, Katie Fournier and Jody Crumble, each of whom have played key reserve roles in their Panther careers. Sophomore Jenilee Klomstad also came on strong towards the end of last season, while junior Danae Russell and sophomore Stephanie Schell will look to vie for playing time this season. No team is without its newcomers and, despite losing just three letterwinners from last season, Botham and her staff added four quality players in sophomore Ashley Imperiale and freshmen Danielle Jorgenson, Alex Klawitter and Amanda Viehauser. HORIZON LEAGUE PRESEASON POLL Rk Team (First Place Votes) Points 1. Green Bay (24) Wright State (1) Milwaukee (2) Cleveland State (1) Butler (1) Valparaiso UIC Loyola (1) Youngstown State Detroit 41 Preseason Player of the Year Traci Edwards, Milwaukee Preseason All-League First Team Traci Edwards, Milwaukee Kailey Klein, Cleveland State Shey Peddy, Wright State Lade Akande, Butler Rachel Porath, Green Bay Preseason All-League Second Team Agnieszka Kulaga, Valparaiso Lavesa Glover, Green Bay Jessie Miller, UIC Susan Lester, Butler Tiara Scott, Youngstown State Entering the season, the team s performance in Europe only heightened Botham s excitement for the season. I am excited about the year. I think this team has great potential, Botham said. What we have done in the off-season has already been very beneficial to our growth as a team. To have that extra work for 10 days and then go over and play some stiff competition in Europe has really helped us develop as a team and helped our team chemistry. So, it s exciting to get the year started and see where we re at. When looking at the team s makeup, the offense has run through Edwards, a three-time all-league first-team player. The 6-foot-2 center has led the league in scoring in each of the last two seasons and rebounding the last three. Both achievements put her in elite company, while the combination of the two puts her in a club of one. Traci, our player of the year, is back. It s great to have her back for one last season, Botham said. I think she wants to continue to improve. I don t think she has expectations to be the player of the year again, to be the MVP of our team again. I think what she has been disappointed with in the past is the team not having the success it had back when she was a freshman in What she s really focused on is doing what she can to help this team succeed. Edwards has set school records for scoring in each of the last two seasons, with 20.5 ppg as a sophomore before last season s 20.6 scoring clip. Her career scoring average of 19.1 points has put her on the precipice of more elite company. In order, she is likely to break the school record for career points, become the first Panther and second Horizon League player to eclipse 2,000 points and, lastly, become the league s all-time leading scorer. On the rebounding front, Edwards is on pace to break the school s Division I career rebounding record and surpass 1,000 rebounds, something only one woman has ever done in a UWM uniform. The team also got a boost of experience in the off-season with a four-game trip through Europe. The Panthers were allowed 10 days of practice leading up to the trip in May. They then took on U20 national teams from The Netherlands and Belgium, as well as a pair of professional teams from Belgium. TRACI EDWARDS 2008 Milwaukee Women s Basketball Media Guide 7

8 MILWAUKEE PANTHERS PREVIEW MILWAUKEE 8 But, as teams focus on Edwards, Milwaukee continues to focus on spreading the offense around. The key is that we need balanced scoring and it can t all be on Traci s shoulders, Botham said. We have to have at least three to four in doublefigures for us to be successful. We ve talked consistently about that, so (our players) have taken it upon themselves to be one of those players. McCain is one player that has demonstrated her ability to contribute on both ends of the floor. She finished third on the team in scoring last season (6.8 ppg) and was named to the league s all-defensive team. She has also been a leader on the court and will be a team captain this season alongside Edwards and Schell. Turq brings stability, enthusiasm and strength around the basket, Botham said. She is a rahrah kind of player out on the court, but she is not real vocal when it comes to off the court. We saw a lot more of that, as well as with Traci, being more vocal to their teammates, really focusing out on what the team needs and then providing that kind of support for their teammates. I think now that it s their last go around, they know this is it. This is it for them, so they are taking more responsibility in those types of roles. The point guard responsibilities will likely be split up among two players who saw extended starting time in McClain and Barnes. I think the point guard spot is going to be important, Botham said. To have consistency bringing it up against pressure and to be able to handle MARKITA BARNES the pressure that we see will be important. McClain has the inside track to the position, having started 19 games in a breakout sophomore campaign last season. She averaged 5.3 points per game and led the team with 70 assists. We had a number of players that had great offseasons and came back stronger than ever, Botham said. Jodie McClain has really had a great off-season and come back really strong and is really stepping up into more of a leadership role. I think that s important in a point guard spot. Barnes saw her playing time increase at the season went on and started the final six games of the season. Over her last seven games, she averaged 3.4 assists per contest and had 30 assists compared to just 11 turnovers over her last 10 games. When the season ended, she led the team in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.46). Markita was our assist-to-turnover ratio leader last season and got our Playmaker Award at the end of the season, Botham said. She has a knack for getting people the ball in scoring positions. She s also a great defender and can attack. I think she played a little tentative early in the season. As she learned the offensive and defensive system she was playing with a lot more confidence, more aggressiveness. We expect her to be able to flow into that this season. UWM s excursion laid the foundation for a strong off-season by the majority of the roster. Botham and her staff has seen the difference the most in a tight sophomore class. (The sophomores) are a very close-knit group. They had a great summer together and with the other upperclassmen, Botham said. They want to succeed. They are strong competitors. They really took this summer to heart and worked together and with everyone else to improve. I think they had a taste, they were all important contributors for us last year and we saw minutes increase with Maurika and Jenilee, so they know that with continued work they can see a bigger role this year and I think they are anticipating that. Williams showed glimpses of her potential last season and returns as a candidate for a starting spot at the shooting guard position. On offense she averaged 5.1 points per game and comes back after a strong off-season. She chipped in 10 points per game on Milwaukee s European trip in May and capped the trip with a 17-point performance in the finale, which included 10 points in one quarter that keyed a Panther rally. Jineen had a great off-season, so we expect her to play a significant role for us this season, Botham said. Last season, she was also a force on defense, using her speed and athleticism to shut down opponents on the floor and by altering their shots. Williams finished fifth on the team with 21 steals, but was also tied for second on the team with eight blocks, despite standing just 5-foot-9. Laur will look to crack the starting lineup in the front court, bringing with her a 5.5 point-pergame scoring average. She is another player that has gotten stronger with a good off-season and a strong performance in Europe. She was second on the team with 11.8 points and eight rebounds per game over the four games. Klomstad evolved throughout her freshman season from post depth and a change of pace from Edwards on the block to a complimentary player that increased the team s size by sharing floor time with Edwards. Over the final six times, she saw her playing time jump from 5.7 to 15 minutes per game and her scoring average increase from 1.3 to 7.5 ppg. She also became more comfortable around the basket, shooting 76 percent over the final six games of the season after shooting just 26.7 percent in her first 10 appearances. I think Jenilee Klomstad is going to surprise a lot of people, Botham said. She had a really good summer. She went to a post-player camp and I think she gained a lot of confidence. She went up against top collegiate players from big time programs Connecticut, Virginia Tech and competed. She came on a little bit for us, but not to the degree that I think she can. She is going to be an X factor. She invested her time and money to improve and actually got a most improved award out 2008 Milwaukee Women s Basketball Media Guide

9 MILWAUKEE MILWAUKEE PANTHERS PREVIEW JENILEE KLOMSTAD there. She came back with a lot of energy Another of the talented underclassmen, Hickman provided value last season as a scorer and outside threat, but still made five of her eight starts at the point. She finished fourth on the team in scoring with 6.4 points per game and boasted a pair of 20-point outings. She was the team s second-most prolific three-point shooter with 36 and set a school freshman record by hitting on a team-best 42.9 percent of her threepoint attempts. With the loss of Aubri Rote and Meredith Onson, some key outside shooters, we are going to see who can step in and fill that perimeter role for us of knocking down the long ball. Crumble started the first four games last season at point guard, but missed some time with an injury and shifted over to the two when she returned. She averaged 4.3 points per game and was fourth on the team with 49 assists. Fournier is another post player that has paired with Edwards for a larger Panther lineup. She has continued to establish herself as a defensive post player, finishing among the team leaders in blocks for the third-straight season. On offense, she will look to return to her sophomore season form when she averaged 5.1 points per game. Rounding out the returning guards are Schell and Russell. Despite being just a sophomore, Schell will be a team captain for the secondstraight year. She is strong fundamentally and from three-point range. She saw some time late in contests when the Panthers needed a three and appeared in 11 total games. Steph does what we ask her to do when we ask her to do it to the best of her ability, Botham said. As a freshman she stepped up. We were looking for leadership and she wanted it. Russell has been hampered by injuries for much of her career and played in just one game last season after missing the first couple of months with an injury. She will use the season to focus on getting healthy before attempting to crack UWM s rotation in the early season. Botham is high on the team s newcomers, believing that they can make an immediate impact. Viehauser was a five-year varsity player in Minneapolis at Washburn and Robbinsdale Armstrong High Schools. She earned all-state honors in each of her two seasons at Armstrong and averaged a double-double over three seasons at Washburn. Amanda was our primary recruiting target and we are thrilled to get her, Botham said when she signed her National Letter of Intent. She is extremely skilled, possessing both a refined inside game and very good perimeter game. She is an especially good outside shooter. A 6-foot-3 post player out of Logan High School in La Crosse, Wis., Jorgenson averaged 16.2 points and 9.3 rebounds on her way to Mississippi Valley Conference Player of the Year honors and a second-straight La Crosse Tribune Player of the Year award. She was also named to the WBCA All-State First Team and the Associated Press All- State Second Team. I think the depth in the post by adding two in Danielle Jorgenson and Amanda Viehauser is going to be important, Botham said. To have that extra depth in the post, not only to help the daily competition on the block, but to be able to step in and provide some extra punch down there is going to help us. I think Traci, by the end of the season, was worn down. She carried a lot of weight for our team. Danielle and Amanda bring athleticism and versatility in the post. They ll be able to play with their back to the basket as well as facing the basket. They are probably two of our most athletic post players that we have had in here in a long time. They have great hands and size and girth. They got into the weight room this summer and worked really hard, so they will provide strength, as well. We are excited to have that added depth in the block. Klawitter joined the team as a walk-on out of Janesville, Wis. She was an all-conference guard her senior season at Parker High School. She helped her team to conference titles in each of her four years and was an 11-time letterwinner over three sports. We re excited about Alex. She wanted to be a part of the program, Botham said. She comes from a prestigious, winning tradition in Janesville Parker, a very fundamental and successful program. She really knows what it takes to be successful. She is already doing so many good things, already, just in that role. Imperiale will have to wait before hitting the floor with the Panthers, as she will become eligible following the fall semester. A transfer from UW-La Crosse midway through last season, she joined the team and practiced throughout the second semester. As per NCAA rules, she will have to sit out one more semester and will have sophomore eligibility. Ashley has a great work ethic. She came back in great shape, Botham said. She can shoot the ball. I think we see her being able to provide a 3/4. She has size and can defend a post if need be. She can shoot the ball from the perimeter, is smart and can rebound. She has the strength and will run through the wall for you. She did not play basketball at UWL, but is coming off an all-state first team season her senior year at Greendale High School in She was named the conference player of the year and to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinal All-Area team three times each. We are excited about these four, the addition of them, Botham said. They bring strength and they all come from very successful programs Milwaukee Women s Basketball Media Guide 9

Her teams have gone in the league since The building process started right away for Botham, who took over a team that won just four games the year before. She led the squad to 16 wins in , earning conference coach of the year honors in the process. That season started a trend for UWM under Botham s direction. The next year, the Panthers posted an eight-game winning streak and claimed a win over No. 13 Nebraska. The season then included a second-place finish and an undefeated league home campaign.
