WRIGHT ST ATE (3-15, 0-5) The Raiders dropped their eighth straight game, losing to Cleveland State, in Dayton last Thursday. Cleveland State failed to make a field goal in the final 6:57, but knocked down 14-of- 16 free throws and clamped down on defense, en route to defeating Wright State. For the game, the Vikings converted 23-of-28 (.821) from the charity stripe to improve to 10-9 overall and 3-3 in the MCC. Stewart s steals and scoring average are both ranked second in the MCC, and her rebounding totals are ranked fourth. Hollingsworth s pointers per game rank second in the MCC (behind UWM s Wilhite) and in the top-ten for the NCAA. Her.352 from behind the arc ranks 7 th in the MCC. Also, opponents are shooting.490 from the field against the Raiders struggling defense. UWM SERIES AGAINST WRIGHT STATE Wright State holds a 8-5 advantage in the series with UWM, though the Panthers have won their five games in the last eight meetings. In their season series last year, UWM was victorious both times, in overtime in Dayton and in Milwaukee. In their home game, the Panthers were led by Nicole Luchsinger s 16 points and eight rebounds. INSIDE THE GAME AGAINST LOYOLA UWM grabbed its first lead of the game five minutes into the first half on a layup by Maria Viall to go up 8-6. The Ramblers stayed tight and regained the lead, but the Panthers snatched it back for the rest of the half when Luchsinger grabbed an offense board and put it back to make it UWM widened the gap to seven points after Kaufmann made two free throws, Allison Klaas sank a three, and Antoinette Gregory added two points from the line. Loyola ended the half on a 7-2 run, but Milwaukee still took the advantage into the locker room at halftime. Leading by four with 14 minutes remaining in the second half, UWM went on a 10-2 run to explode to a advantage. Klaas and Charlene Smith scored back-to-back layups, and Wilhite and Klaas put up consecutive tres to ignite the second half offense. The Ramblers came back to trail by six points, but UWM senior Janelle Jonason scored consecutive layups to build the lead back up to 10 with 6:35 left. Loyola never got any closer than eight points and were forced to foul. The Panthers' final seven points came at the line to end with the 15-point advantage. Klaas finished with 11 points for UWM while freshman reserve Maria Viall posted a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Loyola was led by guard Tracy Hoffmann's 13 points. UWM COACH SANDY BOTHAM With Botham's guidance, the Panthers earned the second seed - their highest-ever - seed for the Midwestern Collegiate Conference post-season tournament. But Botham has been leading the Panthers to milestones since her first season at UWM ( ). She led her first team to a 16-win season, 12 more than the previous season the fifth-best turnaround in NCAA Division I that year. She won MCC Coach of the Year honors in that season. In the years since, Botham and her teams have collected several accomplishments. Botham s players have been named MCC Player of the Year and MCC Newcomer of the Year. In the last four seasons, the Panthers have seen 10 selections to the All-MCC teams and All-Newcomer teams. Attendance at UWM women's basketball games has increased more than fourfold since Botham has taken over at UWM. Last year, the Panthers home attendance average of 1,646 fans led the Midwestern Collegiate Conference and the 2,629 fans that filed into the Klotsche Center on Feb. 20, 1999 set a single-game attendance record. Wright St 6.89 HOT SHOOTING With a 10-of-17 three-point shooting performance from behind the arc against UW-Green Bay, sophomore guard Jessica Wilhite set MCC and school records, along with a new season-high in the NCAA. She beat the previous MCC all-time record of nine, held by UWGB's Trisha Ebel set last year. Wilhite also broke the school record of seven, recorded by Andrea Filipek in last season's game against Green Bay. She set a new season high in the NCAA with her 10 tres, surpassing the previous high of nine by Rachael Gobble of Tennessee Tech and Michelle St. Clair of Cal-State Sscramento. The all-time NCAA record of three-pointers in a game is 12. Wilhite s 32 points became a career high. After Wilhite s eighth three-pointer of the evening she became the fourth Panther to record 100 career three-point field goals. She joins Tracey Freund, teammate Teri Stoltenberg, and assistant coach Jen Greger as the only Panther women to do so. With accomplishing the feat in 43 games, she set a school record for fewest games to do so. The previous record was 49 games by career three-point leader Daryl Schaffeld. Stoltenberg did it in 81 games, while Greger and Freund each accomplished the feat in 87. The sophomore guard is currently ranked in the nation in 3-point FGs made per game, with an average of 3.29/game. PLAYER OF THE WEEK After her unbelievable performance against Green Bay, Jessica Wilhite was named last week s MCC Player of the Week. WRIGHT ST. S RECORD Overall Conference HOME ROAD NEUTRAL TERI START-ENBERG Senior guard Teri Stoltenberg will be starting her 87 th career game for the Panthers when they take on Wright State. Since her freshman year in 1997 when she started all 27 games, Teri has played in 94 of the team s 99 games and started 86, missing only five games and eight starts due to injury. While eight different Panthers have found themselves rotated into the starting line-up for Coach Botham, Stoltenberg is the only one to start in every game for UWM this season. MOVING UP THE CHARTS With her assist to Holly Tamm on a first-half three-pointer against Detroit, Stoltenberg became the eighth Panther player in school history to amass 300 career assists. With one more three-pointer of her own, Stoltenberg will tie current Panther assistant coach Jen Greger for second on UWM s career three-point leader board with 125. After nailing a three to put the Panthers ahead for good against Loyola, Stoltenberg has 124 career three-point field goals. HOME SWEET HOME Like the current trend in the MCC, UWM sports a winning record at home. The Panthers have gone 6-2 at the Klotsche Center. In the MCC five of the eight teams also own winning home records, including UW-Green Bay (7-1), Detroit (7-1), Loyola (8-3), and Cleveland State (5-2). The three teams yet to catch up on the latest trends in home dominance, Wright St., Butler, and UIC, don a combined record of and none of them have winning records on the road either. After the second week in the conference season, the home team has gone (.546) in conference play, and MCC teams (.585) overall at home. UW-Green Bay is the only MCC school that can lay claim to a.500 record on the road. The Phoenix won their fifrth road game of the season, Saturday, to up their record at 5-4. DEFENSE DEFENSE The Panthers fiesty defense has recorded 173 steals this season, averaging per game. Their opponents have tallied 134 steals against UWM, averaging 7.9 per game. They currently rank third in the conference in steals, as well as third in scoring defense by allowing opponents 64.4 ppg. The Panthers defense has also recorded less turnovers than their opponents, forcing other teams to turnover the ball 343 times, or an average of 20.2 per game. RECORD-SET TING Besides a blockbuster win, the Panthers game against Central Michigan also set a few records around the nation, league, and at UWM. UWM s performance set MCC season-highs for assists (28) and three-point percentage (.786), beating the previous record of 25 and.571, respectively. Sophomore guard Jess Wilhite s 83 percent on 5-of-6 three-point shooting also set an individual best in the conference, blowing out the prior record of 63.6 percent. UWM also reset the school record in 3-point FG percentage, beating the old record of 66.7 percent. Most impressive, UWM set a NCAA Divison I single-game high for the season in 3-point FG pct with 78.6 percent.
