Mason, who finished with a career-high of 18 points to go along with a personal-best nine rebounds, also blocked Sophie Tirtiaux s three-point attempt at the buzzer to solidify Butler s first win of the season. This is my first win at Butler, so of course I will remember it, said first-year head coach Beth Couture. But what makes this game the most memorable is because we played so hard all the way until the end. I challenged our team at halftime and I am so proud of all of them for showing so much heart after giving up our lead early on. We are getting so much stronger mentally and we are really starting to believe that we can win. Butler (1-1) held Illinois State (0-2) without a field goal for a four-minute stretch midway through the first period, en route to taking a lead. But, the Redbirds would quickly turn the tables, holding the Bulldogs scoreless for a six-minute stint, and ending the half on a 17-2 run. Illinois State scored eight of its last ten points in the half from the free throw line to head into the lockerrooms ahead Butler, which did not score a field goal in the last 7:47 of the first half, was held off the scoreboard for the first five and a half of the second period. Cortney Urquhart s jumper in the paint ended an 0-for-13 scoring drought for the Bulldogs, and Stephanie Boeke drained a three-pointer on the next possession to cut the gap to Sparked by nine straight points from Mason, the Bulldogs continued to chip away at the lead, pulling to within Back-to-back three-pointers by Lisa Pryor then tied the game at 49 with under nine minutes remaining and another layup by Mason gave Butler a lead, its first advantage since the 4:07 mark in the first half. After tie scores at 53, 55 and 57, Urquhart scored at 1:35 off a Nancy Bowden assist to put Butler ahead The Redbirds had one last chance with Tirtiaux s three-point attempt, but Mason managed to swipe it away as time expired. Urquhart finished with the game s lone double-double of 10 points and 13 rebounds and Pryor chipped in 12 points off the bench. Bowden dished out a game-high nine assists, with only one turnover, to lead the Bulldogs offensive attack. Zora Skrabalova led Illinois State with 12 points and seven rebounds while Jaci McCormack chipped in 11 points. Butler, which shot 36.1 percent on the game, held a rebounding edge. Illinois State shot 40.4 percent and was plagued by 21 turnovers.
